[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] London. You know the place. Fast cars, sharp suits, the capital of style and swagger. But this story isn’t quite London. It’s 20 minutes down the road. Quieter postcode, greener views, but don’t be fooled. It’s got London’s swagger written all over it. Wentworth has had some proper diamonds play over the years. Legends, all of them. Each leaving a mark that stands the test of time. And this year we have more. Big hitters, big names, all lining up for one prize and the chance to be a Rolex series champion. Wentworth may not be London, but it’s got the same swagger. And this week, it carries something greater. The prestige of the Rolex series. Welcome to the BMW PGA Championship. [Music] Good morning to you and welcome indeed to the feature group coverage of the opening round here at the BMW PGA Championship. It’s an event that holds such a special place in the hearts of European golfers worldwide. Careers were born here, careers were made here, and this week we will write our 71st name into the history books. And there’s little question the third of five Rolex Series events of the year will play its part. Look at that. 8,000 points up for grabs. Everything is taken up a notch this week in more ways than one. I’m Alli Whitaker and it is a pleasure to be back once again to bring you the morning play for round one. Cord Wentworth home for over 40 years and a man that owns a chapter of that history in 2006 is David Hal. And uh take us through the layout here. How? Yeah, thanks Alie. Par 72 here of course at Wentworth and par five is coming at the end. But we start off with a couple of tough par fours one and three in the middle of those. It’s a nice wee dinky par three the second just about 150 yards. Fourth first par five down the hill dog leg right to left and all the way out uh to the halfway hut for the members at the ninth where the railway line cuts on its way to Waterloo station. Then the back nine the run home uh and into this east wind today. Uh that can be a treacherous run and a couple of par fives to finish. No way back, no shortcuts. It’s a wonderful golf course and it’s a long walk if you’re here on site, but a beautiful one at that, especially with the sun out so far this morning. Still a little dewy, wet underfoot. We’ve got six fabulous golfers to show off here around the West Course today, including this trio who will lead us out in game 12. That of Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, and Billy Horchel. See Alistister Scott there looking very dapper. He’ll be teeing off our groups for us at the first TE today with the Wentworth Clubhouse watching on a beautiful clubhouse. It is too. Yes. Few tales to tell over the years from inside those four walls. Nice crowds out early on. It’s always well supported the BMW PGA Championship as will this trio be. Let’s get their day started now at 8:35. [Music] H trio of FedEx Cup championship champions, I should say, from uh recent and from all the way back to 2014 where it came for Billy Horschel. that man on screen. The most recent of all, a breakthrough winner in the US. At last, it was for Tommy Fleetwood. I’m sure they’ll enjoy each other’s company out there this morning. This is game number 12 on the team from England, Justin Rose. playing in his 20th BMW PGA Championship. Yet to win here, yet to win here. It’s uh some great names on that trophy and there’s some great names that aren’t, which goes to show just how strong a tour tournament it is. bunker at 265 to carry down the right hand side and pump one down the hill and try and find a wedge or n iron preferably from the fairway but rough not the end of the That needs a kick out from the trees and quickly. [Applause] England. Tommy Little. Tommy. And he returns to these hallowed grounds as a PGA Tour champion as well. After taking the tour championship, the FedEx Cup, two times Rolex Series winner as well on the DP World Tour. It’s missing very little now the career of Tommy Fleetwood except maybe one of the the really big ones. Yes, he certainly broke his duck on US soil in fine style. [Applause] on the tea. The Rolex Series winner here at the BMW PGA Championship. He’s a defending champion for the USA, Billy Horel, and a two-time winner of this championship. So, good to see him back after taking five months away from competitive golf for hip surgery. We know how much this week means to him. He was very happy the stars aligned with both body and golf to be here today. A somewhat inospicious start, you’d have to say, but they’re off and running. And Billy, for one, will be delighted to be back on a golf course. And no better place than the West Course at Wentworth to start his journey back from injury. Just beautiful scenes down there. Start to to burn off a little bit of the uh due in the roughened surrounds. Fingers crossed the rain stays away. We’ve had plenty of it there yesterday and in the leadup to this week. So, why don’t we uh check in on the leaderboard. Four players uh out early doors and off to hot starts. None of them have actually made a bogey yet. Antoine Rosner with three in a row to the mark. Currently three under par by Dylan Felli, Marcel Schneider and Ivan Cantero. There is lots of red and surprisingly so down the first pins on the front left. It’s usually one of the big challenges you met straight out of the gates. Quite remarkably, the first and the third are currently playing under par and they are the two of the hardest holes on this golf course. East Wind playing down helping the chaps on their way as they leave the first T is playing into their hands it would seem. And there is Mini Rolex Series winner in years gone by his came at the Genesis Scottish Open. So early doors for many of these players. As I said, we’ve just tipped past uh 8:35 local time, coming up to 8:40 now. So, we’ve got two hours of tea times on the golf course. [Music] Been a very early alarm for Thomas A and Ivan Canter who does share the lane, Tom Bant, who were out at 640 this morning. There’s the ball placements down one as the green clears up ahead. We get a good look at the pin there and a man who’s already got it all dialed in down there watching this grid strut up to their uh second shots is Jamie Spence. Morning Spency. Yeah, morning everybody. I don’t think I’ve got it all worked out. Alli bit early for me. Normally on my second cup of tea and watching a bit of telly, but I’d rather be here. Two good drives and Justin’s all right actually over there under the tree. He’s got a clear shot. Long way back, but what a gorgeous morning. Great crowds, wonderful light this time of the morning. Nice and fresh. Teed off very early this morning the first guys. I can’t believe this hole’s under par. I always thought it was a par five myself. Times have changed, Jamie. Yes. And they hit it a bit further, David. Well, most people hit it further than you in fairness. That’s true. That’s very true. But very unkind. No, it’s true. Don’t worry, I’ll get my own back. It’s a long day. Although he has won round here, hasn’t he? How rather annoyingly. So he’s got 221. Justin, there’s a clean lie and the trees won’t be a problem because uh it’s going to come out low anyway for Rosie. Got a sevenwood in the bag and then a four iron. So this will be the sevenwood. He’s got a mini driver as well. So, it’s not that just might with the seven with the branches, you might just be thinking it might pop up, but I doubt it. Find a good club for this shot really. One of the players are using lofted woods, very lofted woods. Tommy’s got a ninewood. So, 221 for Rose, seven wood under the tree. Some signs of a bit of breeze rustling around in the trees there. might just creep a little further back down to the uh bottom of that slope front right left on our screens. Oh, it’s a good leave from there. No doubt about that. He has a fine short game. Yeah, that was pretty good, wasn’t it, Justin from there? Oh, it was a got got away with a lie to be fair. Great T- shot from Tommy, the crowd’s favorite. Winds off the left, Howler, you’re right. It slightly hurting, I’d say. 185 for Tommy. Seven iron. It’s a good one, but I think it’s a good club here for him. He can just flush it really. He likes about little draws. This flag’s perfect for him front left. He can just hold it without wind. [Applause] Arrow straight fleward. That is the feature of his game. Fairways and greens. He’s got one of each so far then. Great T-shot, Billy. Nice back, Billy. 168 big eight. Might just chip the seven here cuz it’s destiny turned into him. I think it’s the eight though. He was working on the range of laying the club off. Got to go. Got to go. Oh dear. You want to be like on the right sand possibly. Good job you out there, Jamie. I had the wind from the east. I think I’ve been looking at yesterday’s weather forecast. Good job you’re with us. Yeah, I think that actually ended up short of the bunker on the left. We shall see our next trio back there in the shadows of the Rolex umbrella that of Hideki, Matsiamyama, Ludvig, Oberg, and Matt Fitzpatrick. This is game number 13 on the tea from Japan. Pedi Matsuyang. Such a worldwide presence. Uh Matsuyama. So good to have him here making his debut in the BMW PGA. It’s truly excellent to have him here. No doubt about that. We need the world’s best players to travel more, play around the globe. And it’s wonderful to see the former Masters champion here for the first time. I’m sure he’s delighted that he’s turned up. How could you not enjoy this? like that, I guess. Andrea Ludvik over the Swedish superstar didn’t play last year but did lead into the final round two years ago when he first burst on the scene pre- Rider Cup straight out of college. So he has taken a liking to the West Course before. This is a little bit more like what we’re used to seeing on the opening hole. Balls scattered all over the place and paths tough to find. on England’s Matt Splatter, fresh off his RDER Cup selection, something he well and truly played his way into with six top 10s in his last eight starts worldwide. Remember that includes the playoffs with the best of the best on the PGA Tour go headto-head. Yeah, right back on form. Perhaps the best form of his life in some ways. Really consistent. And I think he’s enjoying new found control over that little white golf ball once again. Fast swing, brisk with the rhythm and straight. [Applause] All right, just finds that little step cut, that little question that they will enjoy. What is a dream home for golf on the DP World Tour out there today? [Music] So off they go. Make their way to their seconds. We’ll go up to the green with Justin Rose. Yeah, slightly above him. The green landing on a down slope. However, these greens a little bit slower than these players will be used to. Slower than normal for the West Course as well. Been a very hot summer here in the UK and uh the grass has uh had to weather that storm, shall we say, and it’s just a little bit thicker than normal. Yeah, it’s something that we heard much of last week with a similar story over in Ireland. Dry month and then loads of rain. That was always low for Fleetwood. It really was right off the blade. never looked like it had a chance. Now we can see that Billy Horchel might have got a little bit of a teach off Fleetwood’s uh putt there. He’s chipped up to there. So it is for par coming next. More of a pitch really from where his second ended up. Now Billy’s got a bit of an unusual putting routine. Look at this. He just sort of shuffles in and then gives it a hit. If you didn’t know, you might think he paid off nine when he puts the photo in his hand to start with, but he doesn’t. He’s one of the world’s very best golfers. One of the best that we’ve seen the last trio or so, four years. He won in 21 and 204 around this layout. something that has evaded Justin Rose throughout the career. There you see the clothing just tucked under the left armpit. Just trying to keep the connection between the upper arms and the torso. And it works. Hala, you’ve won on this golf course. How special is it as an Englishman to take a title here? Oh, if you’re a member of the DP World Tour, as obviously all these players are, it’s it is our flagship event. It’s the names on the trophies are immense. All that history with Beros and Montgomery, Langer. Um, yeah, truly the the highest honor I’ve achieved in the game. No doubt about that. Biggest thrill for sure. And um, great memories stored. No doubt about that. Yeah, pride of placed the trophy on my uh, mantle piece. Well, that’s not true. It’s in my office with some some receipts and all sorts stuffed around it. But there we go. It’s like the the ghosts of golfers past lingering in these trees. So much history here. Golf Course itself dates back to 1922. Gaze back towards Matsiamyama. Just under 190 yards left. Nice clean lie in the rough. Worst things you can do as a pro golfer is missed the fairway by two yards. Almost made it 10 yards away. That’ll find that little valley. The rise short ride of first green does sit above uh the level of all around it as we go to two for the first time today. Justin Rose. And what a great par three this second is. It’s one of those holes you just remember. 156. I cannot work out where this wind is. David, how the clouds are going off the right and into but standing on that tea. It’s in off the left. So, keep the ball down and trust your distance, I guess, here. Little late iron for Justin. Definitely hurting. Oh, no. That’s the nine. Pummeled it. Well, it was the right club, whichever one it was. Long and left is the danger there on two, but it’s innocuous pin position today in many ways. Nicely done. So, par at one 30 opportunity at two. We go back to Fitzpatrick. As Jamie Spence mentioned, the wind does flutter around in the tree line here at Went. It’s hard to pick at times. That’s a nice opener for Fitzy. Yeah, it’s swirling around. David, I remember my playing days here. It was difficult. My caddy said, “Look at the clouds.” And they’re moving off the right. Tommy 99 as well. 156. Shortened follow through. It’s the signature move and propels the ball in the right direction of times. Not easy for Billy, is it? Haven’t played for five months. Uh definitely a bit of rust on that second shot into one. And I think it’s the short game that suffers when you haven’t played for a long time. You can these guys can hit the ball really. But just that sharpness around the greens, but he’s a two-time champ. He loves it here. So, we’re going to wish him the best on his comeback. I’m not. Should be the same club for Billy. Wind definitely coming off the right and slightly hurting. Struck right out of the middle of the club. That’s better than Horseshaw. So down the par three all on the green with dirty parts that await. Another one’s come the way of Dylan Felli. So he is out front alone. Early doors here of the BMW PGA Championship. Many flags there are on that front page of the leaderboard. Many of them European Aaron Cochril, David Maloozi, Jaden Schaffer doing their best to mix that up. We get back to one with Matsyama. similar shot to that of Rose and he too coming up well way short catching the little ups slope missed strike. Is there anything that you’d change in your in your wedges for a place like this? You know, we see players go to the open and maybe use a slightly less bounce. Any any tweaks for you over I wasn’t a big changer of of wedges for conditions. I’ve got to be honest with you. Very occasionally I turn up with somewhere where there was loads of sand in the bunkers. I might add a little bit of bounce to the lob bridge, but I think this is pretty standard in the conditions front. A bump and run from Ludvig. Everybody getting caught out by the slowness of the greens and the softness of the uh conditions this morning. Yeah, weather was uh stunning on Monday. Little patches of rain on Tuesday, wet yesterday for pretty much the entirety of what was the prime, the celebrity prime that they have year in year out around here. The likes of uh Andy Murray, Gareth Bale coming to play. They actually played with Billy Horchel, didn’t they? Amongst others, Andy Murray, he got the 18th with his own ball. Beautiful drive, three-wood, I think, onto the green 7 ft. sell that for a few uh a few shillings come Sunday to many of these great players. That being said, we’ve seen a few Eagles over the years to collect the silverware last year against Macro I seem to recall breaking the hearts of many. Well, that’ll fill the heart for Matt Fitzpatrick Birdie. So, here’s uh the trio down the second hole all lined up of different lengths putting from similar positions. Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, and Billy Horchel. Fleetwood first to go. We might see a bit of that today. Parts coming up short. There will be some adjusting being done. It is preferred lives as well today after uh the rains of yesterday. Couple of significant downpours. So even with the uh the undulation all around this golf course, still a few areas that were affected. It is going to be a par pass start for Fleetwood up the hill. Maybe just inside right for Ludvig. Just needs a nice firm hit. You make a four the opening hole on the west course here at Wentworth. You should always be happy. Poor Reed for me and from Ober. Let’s return to the second and Justin Rose for Birdie. Just catches the low edge. So he’s into the red for the first time this week. really uh Horell missed his birdie pot. It’s a great start here though. Kind of strides away from the clubhouse. One, two, and three. Opportunity uh awaits at the fourth. for par five. Tell me formality for Fleetwood and it is another who’s changed to the mallet style of putter during the course of this season and boy has it worked out well for him. Definitely putting better on his way to the FedEx champion status that he now holds. On his way to the commentary box and now in with us is uh Sam Torrent. Morning to you Sam. Morning Allison. Morning everyone. And beautiful morning out here. Absolutely perfect conditions. Something you pray for when you’re out early. A wonderful golf course. What a venue. And as pristine as possible. Yeah. Given what mother nature gives you along the way sometimes. Exactly. It’s beautiful out there. Current Ryder Cup player Fitzpatrick T shot at two eight or a nine iron just 15 on four left that’s okay was a jolly good break and not easily behind the second green something was miscalculated 13 Justin Rose after that lovely birdie it’s a good par five this third hole they play as The par four though into the wind. My goodness, it’s a long one up the hill here today. Two bunkers down the right and the one up the left. I They can’t reach that. 310 to reach that. So, I think they’ll just be smashing it at that. Quite cool this morning. B’s not going so far. Took me about 20 years to carry that bunker up the right, Jamie. And then they put another one in. Oh, unfortunately that’s in the first bunker up the face. Um, it’s not cold, Jimmy, is it? Oh, slide. Well, maybe a little chill in the air. Jamie said earlier, but that’ll uh improve as the day goes on. Back to two. Matsyama about 265 to carry that bunker that Rose found. So, it is clearly playing long. Matsayyama wind off the right then. He’s found his way whole side very nicely. Yeah, ball’s going nowhere out here at the moment. Uh Fleetwood, he I think he can carry that first bunk on the right, but there’s no need. He’s got to go left and he has done. That looks pretty good. Bit left. A couple of nice nudges right. You got the same lefty a tree in his way. So he might be okay there. It’s a brute of a It’s a brute of a start, Sam, isn’t it? Oh, it always was, Jamie. When you got on that fourth T, it was like, get the get the tea out. That would be celebration. Yeah. Can I walk to the fourth T level par, please? Now short. Well, anywhere between those really. One in the right bunk. I think Tommy’s sat down in that left raft. And there’s a tree to he’s going to have to deal with as well. So, not ideal. It’s only about 30 yards wide this fairway. He’s working hard on getting the club laid off. Billy, it’s heading right as well. Yeah, looks as might have ended up in the uh the bunkers down that right hand side. This not much you can do to avoid them if it is over that way between a rock and a hard place down the third. The left side often blocked out by trees. Dylan Fatelli has found another five birdies in his first seven holes here at Wentworth in the lead by one. Ivan Cantero has just made another down the ninth. Some great starts being seen here at the BMW TGA. Well, from Ireland to England, we travel for the flagship event here and it is always a very welcome journey. So many of the players on tour call this place home. Bit of a spiritual home to many that play the game of golf in this part of the world and right in the heart of London. It’s uh around about 30 minutes or so depending on traffic of course lies the temps. 30 million people come here every single year. Second only to Bangkok and Istanbul if you can believe it. So easy to get around and go on the uh many tube stations over 250. Jump on one of the double-decker buses perhaps. There are few better places to be in the summer walking around all that has uh that London has to offer. Maybe go to the burough market, go see the London Eye, Big Ben as well, tick it all off and then maybe come down to the Gulf for the week as well. There’s a a lot of people that have called in sick in the background, aren’t there? How’s that for a Thursday morning? Yeah, it’s quite uh easy to come out on the train from central London out to Virginia water and then just hop on a park and ride and you’re here in no time at all. Full of house this week. Just about 100,000 people are due to come through the doors. It’s become pretty much a festival of golf over the years, Sam. Yeah, the the crowds that love coming here to Worth. It’s got great history. coming here since 72, I think. Played it three times in 72, three and four, and then went away, but then it came back in 84. Peek through the trees and see how the other half lives. Sam, you ever keep your eye on any of the nice properties as you make your way around? Sometimes. Sometimes they might even get invited into a few. Looks like Justin Rose might be eyeing this one up back there. Third fairway or rather third fairway bunker for Justin lies. Okay, but he can’t get more than 130 yards out of he doesn’t want to either. Don’t think he can reach the front 190. No chance out of this lie. Just where I want to hit my third from. Just got to get the ball in the fairway. That’s a good layup. It’s a nice easy pen if you lay up. It’s on the front right. Flewood to go next. Going to hit a big hook. He’s only got a five on in the back and a nine would. Not sure you can hook a nine wood that far. He probably can, Jamie. Into into the breeze. Yes, cuz I confused myself earlier doors with I have no idea, David. I have to be honest. I know I’m out here. Yeah, it is inter. The clouds are going down the fairway, but it swells. Ah, he’s got the iron out. It’s Tommy to go, but Horsel looks like he’s itching to go, but I don’t think he is. I think it’s Tommy. Longest iron he’s got is a five. It won’t be a six, I don’t think, because he’s got to hook it quite a lot and hit a low hook to get to this green. Flewood lies. Okay. I find that amazing, Jimmy. Five iron to 9 wood. Then what? Fivewood, three-wood driver. Sevenwood mini driver. T. Wow. What the sort of makeup you’d have had in your bag. Yeah, I’ve had the nine wood and it didn’t last long, but the seven wood’s been in there a long time. Five iron your longest iron. Goodness me. Mind you, they hit their five iron about 215, Sam. So, yes. Yeah, that was a good three-wood. He’s got a bare muddy lie here. Or 174. But he’s got a clear lie line rather to the flag on the front. So, there’s a chance here, but strike off this line. It’s not great. Got to be steep on it. Tough to get great connection from that kind of line. Great line on it. Quite an easy chip for Horseshoe there. Here, Hideki Matsyama has just rolled his in while we’ve been watching these second shots. So he’s one under on the day in the early stages. Some good crowds out watching this trio already Jamie. Yes. Yes. They’re very keen, aren’t they, here to get in. Car parks are full. Early doors. Park and ride system to get to Wentworth if you’re coming. Works very well. It does. No stone left unturned. Not to mention, we talked about the festival of golf. They put on uh some great concerts on the weekend. We’ve got Razer Lightite on uh Saturday night. Ella Henderson is the entertainment for Sunday. So, a little bit for everyone. Yes, I’ve heard of one of those two great acts that was um turn and I’ve heard of the other. Yes. Showing our age difference here, Ali. Great band, Razer Light. I remember their hits, but I used to sing them very badly. Yes. They won’t prompt you for more. Your children told you that very quickly, didn’t they? Yes. I can’t even get through happy birthday without them taking the mick out of my voice. Terrible. It’s cuz you keep trying to harmonize. Hell, that’s just outside your range. Perfect layup, Jamie. Yeah, not too bad, Sam. 83 yards I’ve got. You can use the slope behind this pin. Just need to be careful not to come up short on this. There’ll be a lot of spin on it. Jimmy said just try and land it maybe 10 12 feet behind. Oh, he’s played a nice little dead shot. No spin. Should be. Go on. Yes. This is beautiful. Absolutely stunning shot from Rose. Worked that out really well, didn’t he? Cuz he pitched it a long way past the hole to use all the contours to bring it back. A little local knowledge amassed in his 19 previous performances here. It’s going to pay off. He’s going to escape with the par, isn’t he? He certainly is after a nice birdie at the secondyama who also birdied the second shot at three. Magnificent golfer from Japan, Mast’s champion. That’s a beauty. A lot of rain yesterday, so the course is very receptive. Maybe getting a bit of mud on the ball. Well, Horaw preferred lies, so give himself a nice lie. What’s he going to do? Play standard shot. I think he’s might be thinking using the bank. Maybe not the twix in between really, wasn’t he? [Applause] did its best to come back down that slope back to the tea with Oberg. One of my favorite swings this young man has. Speed of play is very nice as well. That’s a beauty. Fleetwood. Now he’s just short of the green. I think I’ll just play a conventional pitch here because otherwise he’s got to go a good 10 past the pin to get it down to the flag. Just a score of score young man with the holding the scoreboards just in the way. So he’s just moved him out. Lot of young folks out here cheering on Tommy. So yeah, I think of a traditional pit shop with his lob wedge here which couple of yards on. Oh, a foot short which killed all its speed. Don’t know about you how I struggle with those lob wedges from that. It’s hard to hit the ball hard enough, isn’t it, up the hill? Yeah, I think it is. They got to be very aggressive around the greens today. That ball is coming to a hole rather sharpish somewhat unexpectedly. Justin Rose there still working on the swing with great work over the years. What a beautiful golf swing. I got caught in the hotel lift last week swinging as the someone entered into in the mirror in the lift. Did you Did you try and save it? Pretend like you weren’t like lean on the wall or anything? No, I went I went with it, but they weren’t a golfer. It was quite embarrassing. Few people don’t play the game in Ireland as well. How well supported that event has been over the years. Certainly was last week with the the finish and the fairy tale they got now. Fleetwood for his par. Yeah. Came up short. It’s again it’s up the hill. It’s quite a slow one here for Fleetwood. Not much break. He’s been low three times in a row now. What score are you looking for realistically through the uh the first three holes? How first three level part? Yeah, I always think if you could get through with three pars, you were happy. And then birdie four. Absolutely. I mean this there used to be a run on this course. It was on the back n from the 11th te to the clubhouse. It was like maybe one difficult hole. I think there was four par fives. 12 15 17 and 18. It’s all changed now. It’s tough finish. Very good. Perfect line. Billy’s talked quite a lot over the years actually about how he sees his goal. Of course, par fives got to play the par fives well and three of them come quite late in the round as you just mentioned Sam. So, patience is a virtue around the uh Burma road course we used to call it. There is a history of fast finishes here. Anyone within a handful always has a chance even to the final couple of hours of this event. if you can keep yourself on the flanks of contention. So it is a par for Rose bogey for Tommy Fleetwood and a four for Billy Horchel. So the runner up from 2007 2012 he’s had some near misses here for a little while now. Justin Rose, you find Matsiama on the short grass. unusual practice ring in some ways. There’s no sign of a pause at the top of his back swing when he’s going through the motions. So, let’s see what happens here. Variable amount of time spent at the top of his swing for Matsyama. Beautiful iron shot into the third. That’s a long way uphill. Always plays longer. Time at the top of the back swing. Wasn’t that the the name of your of your father’s book? Almost room at the top. Room at the top. I knew it was something like that. Yeah. A great book, instructional book that Fitzpatrick, beautiful iron player normally. Is it hanging on the right? Oh, it’s a bit long. Oh, that’ll be a tester. You’d like it there in the next three days. It will probably be up the back of the cream the pen, but today it’s on the front and that will be very difficult. It’s when the pan back tells the tail. Pan back round to from from the left edge of screen all the way across and even then it looks a little flatter from our angle than it will be. A wonderful drive from Mberg. Just such a beautiful player. came into the RDER Cup in Italy. Top 10 in the world. Hadn’t even played in a major. He’s just pushed that one into the bunker. Might be okay. He did have a very good chance to win this championship on debut. Faltered, you’d have to say, in the last uh nine or so holes. It’s not all gone his own way this year. He’s had the big victory and a signature event in the United States, but a little bit haphazard at times. Quite as consistent as we thought he might be. Formed it a little after the Masters, didn’t it? But he’s seen a big uptick really the last five starts. Hasn’t finished outside the top 23. Three weeks of those were the uh the playoffs, FedEx Cup playoffs over in the US. Couple of top 10s there. Yeah, bodess well, isn’t it? Beth Paige in just a couple of weeks time. Maybe he’ll take Sheffller on again. Not sure if he’ll make him cry this time. We’ll see. Yeah, with the record margin as well, wasn’t it? Nine and seven, I believe, with Victor Hovland. I wonder if they’ll be paired again together. What do you think? It it was it was uh Oberg and Havland. Yeah. Well, you’d have to think so, wouldn’t you? Be strange if they weren’t. It was interesting hearing Luke Donald uh speak about, you know, the pairings and Sam, I come to you as a Ryder Cup captain yourself. Um he was asked because there’s only one switch in the team with Raasmas Hygar being the new player uh who will be making his debut whether or not they’ll kind of stick to what they know. And one of the things that Luke alluded to is the fact that how much players changed throughout the two years in different parts of their game, you know, namely Bob McIntyre who’s really developed since Rome. Yeah. And a much longer, more demanding course there. It’s a very finicky thing putting pick picking your partnerships. It’s not easy. I ended up putting a pair out on the Friday morning that had not even played the same four ball in the four days of practice. It was Garcia and Westwood. Mhm. Just and it it worked, but it was completely by luck. If you had the option to have as many statistics to lean on, how much do you think that you would have adapted that into your your team strategy because it’s developed so much over the years? Yeah, I wasn’t stats and I had no idea about stats. It was not in my mind or anything about pairings or but it’s different now. There so so analytical and lots of information out there what each player does. Personalities I like match the personalities. Bit of ying and a bit of yang now. Oberg from the sand. Really nicely done. Quite a tough bunker shot in firm fast conditions, but little easier today. I don’t think we’ve ever had a stronger team. talking RDER Cup. There’s been some great teams of course when many of which you played in Sam. When I look at that list of 12 names, bearing in mind they’ve all but one played before victoriously so two years ago. It’s I think as good as it gets. Well, it’s quite extraordinary. There’s 11 of them back from Italy. Uh that’s a huge point. Yeah. I think they might just call Rasmus Nikolai for the week just for just for the fun of it. They were kidding about whether or not they’d change the photos or just keep them the same. At least they know his size, so that’s a plus. Well, it’s, you know, it’s very difficult to differentiate between the two of them. You might one of them might get a bit tired on the Friday and Saturday. You can stick the other one out in the singles. Nobody will know. They might from the golf swing. That’s about the only way we can tell them apart sometimes from distance as we see what’s ahead for Birdie. There’s lots to deal with here for Fitzpatrick. Now, will it feed naturally linewise towards the hole? Just about. Nicely done. Let’s feel the cold. Matthew bobble hat on and jumper. We’ve seen others in t-shirts this morning. It’s very hot in those trains, doesn’t it? One time I’ll be wearing a t-shirt. Very true. The gentleman on the left there wandering up the 500 yards of this par four try and catch a view of these great players. And Matsayyama, he’s a a rare treat to see in these parts. If you’re a golf spotter, you might be think that looks like a Matsyama over there. Remember his candy on the 18th show? Yes. The little bell to Oh, it was so beautiful. Very moving. There he is. That’s him. See if he watches this one drop for his player. [Applause] very nearly took a little bubble about foot or two into its journey. Sha hasn’t been on the bag all year. One point in time uh Matsyama had a Caddy May, not his wife who who has the same name. So, a couple of switches, but he’s back on track. More logistical errors, I think, along the way for them. So we look down four te’s forward on four Jamie. Uh yes it is thankfully first two days to keep the pace of play. I think they might move it back at the weekend but we shall see. Um Rose and Fleetwood have got away with it here down the right. Yeah we just saw Ros’s ball Jamie. How lucky is that? Yeah, well he’s got a long way in and Fleet was pulled a lovely low in the rough as well with the summer we’ve had over here in the UK there’s you know they’ve struggled to grow rough fortunately for this group here on this hole Justin’s hit the tree could have gone OB actually so he’s really got away with it but he’s got 280 plus back pin was it driver off the tea Jamie or mini driver mini drivers David used to call them as Sam Torrance man to my left once named that implement the actress. I’d like that. So, he’s got 260 the front and I would got to think this is his seven. He can’t hit the mini off this down slope, can he? No. Well, it’s still on the green jam, so he can’t go, can he? Just putting the flag in now, so he’s ready. Looks like the fivewood. Yeah. Yeah. Sevenwood, David. Seven. There we go. He’s got he’s got a driver, a mini, and a sevenwood. They’re confusing us. Sevenwood with a fivewood loft. Yeah, it says seven, but I think it’s nearer a four, which should be good. Should come out low. Might get this on the front. Maybe just scuttle up a little bit. It’s a big one. Not sure if that reached there. Goodness me, that’s one hell of an error. That was in the in the ditch, wasn’t it? It’s either just not short of it, but it might be in that thick rough that just approached it. Now Fitzpatrick for lovely two pot from the back of the green at three and 261 for Tommy. Jimmy forward. Yes. Did Where did Roses finish? Rose is in that bank on the rough. Not He’s not in the ditch. It’s not disappeared. I have to be honest. But a good lie here for Tommy. He can reach. Been right at the back. Right. Trying to cut it in, but it’s not cutting. It’s good. Flirted with the trap. However, that’s an excellent second for Fleetwood. And now Billy Horchaw 221. He’s got 95 the front four iron for Billy. Soft ball’s not going anywhere. He should get all the way back there really. But to get close he’s got to flirt with that right hand side in the bunker. Looks like he’s trying to set up for a holding type shot. Toughest pin here with this. hole of the week. Left hand side’s much easier. You miss it right, you got a very difficult chip, really. Oh, good kick though. He’s come right over the left side of the bunker. Let’s see here. Looks easy. No, Nor is coming back after surgery. But how happy we are to see him here, Billy Horchel. He’s still not at 100% naturally, but he’s playing without pain, which is a big bonus. And they really started hitting golf balls kind of early to mid July. So, it’ll take some time. It’s a big operation that you hit for a golfer. Poor old mom had that done. Popped out. Say it’s the worst pain you can have. But just pop it back in and off you go. See am looking straight down the middle of the fairway driver. That’s perfection. We rarely see the top professionals hit draws with the driver nowadays, but the fourth is a hole that requires that. And that was Absolute gem for Hideki. Even with the the modern game, the modern golf ball, does this golf course require you to to shape it maybe as much as used to be, you know, on the cards? Well, as David said, it’s just harder to shape it. Even though if you needed to shape it, it’s harder to do it. So, you’re putting a bit of pressure on yourself to try and hook it off this tea. A lot of them make three wood from this tea, don’t they? Maybe not getting enough run. Yeah, conditions requiring the uh the big stick today into this breeze. But yeah, a a little draw required off four. Don’t have to have it. 18 are cut off the 18th is preferable, I think, to just get around the corner, but not really. It’s a positional golf course all in all. And then most of the players are hitting to the same spot on many of the holes. Preferably position. Preferably not this spot. Jamie, it’s not too bad actually. It’s sitting on top of the grass. Grass is going with him. So that’s good. I’ll make it 77 yards. He’s moving a lot of grass here, isn’t he? Before he plays. Look at that. In case he goes in there tomorrow, maybe didn’t come out, did he? That lie with that club. No, but he’s got away with it, Sam. I think 77 make this to this back pin. It’s not easy, but won’t spin out of this lie. So he play a nice straight shot just right of the pin. It should release. Almost another couple of yards. So soft. Not really going to get much run over the lob wedge over the corner for Hob. Hit a straight ball if you so choose to flirt with the trees. This one will be right rough. I’m fairly certain. It’s amazing how often the crowds do the players a favor there. You just bobble across that car path and into one of the mansions in a heartbeat. Borshaw in the bunker here. It’s a good lie, but this is right up there. Is a tough shot to get this within four or five feet. He’s got to pitch it all the way and spin it. No. Oh, I take it back. There was a late twist in that tale for Billy Horchel. It was a good one. Did he see it that way or was he just a little fortunate? We’ll never know. It was nicely played. Smart fell, isn’t he? He certainly is. A clever man. That’s kind of they brought in America, a lot of colleagues at golf and they teach them everything about life. Yeah, I was always always slightly jealous of people that looked smart every day. I always seem to get it wrong. He meant his clothes. I thought he meant he’s smart. Oh, no. No, he’s not smart. He’s not a clever chap. No, he just dresses well. I’ll tell you. All right, down to Fleetwood. What does that conversation say about me and you on the brains front, Sam? We were on completely different wavelengths. So, not not quite stone dead, Jamie, for it’s not. No, I don’t think we win a quiz league, would we? The four of us. Unless you unless you got three options for answer. Alli knows her stuff though. So maybe we don’t you know tar her with our brush. I would hate to go on a quiz and get a golf question. It’s too much pressure. I got one wrong on question of sport once. Easy. I even played in the tournament. It was only four years before and I had to name the year. I got it all wrong. Oh, embarrassing. I got unfortunately I’ve got have a one. I have the record for the longest time to answer a question and they let me go for about 35 minutes and it was who won two majors and didn’t play in the Ryder Cup and I came home and said to the wife you can’t believe the question I got and she said John Dailyaly and it took me 30 minutes I got it in the end. Well let’s look at Justin Rose’s grip. It’s a modern one that right hand change it goes on quite delicately the the right hand for Rose. Look at Fleetwoods later on in the round. It’s slightly different. That one seemed to hit a brick wall. The reason they do that, David, is because the right hand can be evil sometimes, can’t it? In a butting stroke. It’s two hands trying to work as one. And if one takes over, the message is stop at the elbows and the right hand just takes over. That’s why they they try all these finicky things with the right hand. Pencil grip, claw grip. There’s so many of them, but the work, I mean, it’s so much easier, especially with the speed of the greens when we played on the early part of my career. Anyway, the greens are so slow, you almost had to hold it like you hold the driver. Yeah, he needed a bit of right hand in the stroke. Look at this style, Ali. This is all different. He doesn’t know where he’s going to put his hands, it looks like. Of course he does. Eventually, he’s ready. He just pops it forward. Lovely. shuffles up behind it trying to surprise it so it doesn’t see him coming. Just goes when he’s ready. Yeah, Horseshaw reminds me of the uh Welsh rugby player who takes the kicks and there’s all those little fidgets then he just goes in and kicks. Quite interesting. Now this big butt for Tommy. I know it’s it’s not a difficult one just up the hill bit of right to left but he’s been low three putts in a row all right to lefters and he’s got another one so generally pros overcompensate but uh this isn’t difficult in the context of his game it give him a big boost this should make birdie get back to level. It’s not been himself so far, David. A couple of funny shots. That was a not a good part. No. a couple of lefts with the putter and you you have to think that was in his mind and he’s just shoved it out to the right. So that’s like lack of confidence on the greens. Yeah. Can’t imagine he would have though. He’s a beautiful butter. Well, yes. Does everything very very well in golf. Very high standard. Quite the year win. Yes, it took him the whole season on the PJ tour to finally get across the line, but he did it in just the coolest of styles at the the right time. The biggest championship took all the spoils in the end. He certainly did. Yeah. Needs to find a little something in the greens out there so far from short range today. Tommy Fleetwood, he’s one over which puts him six back of our current leader, South Africa’s Dylan Felli. who’s hot off the back of uh three mis cuts himself. The tables have turned for Felli at least so far today. He’s off to a fantastic start here at Wentworth. There is a couple of our feature group members, those of Justin Rose. If you do see the gold stars next to their names this week, it means that they’ve taken Rolex Series events in years gone by. So good to have Matsyama here. His birdie came at the second. The Path three came at first for Matt Fitzpatrick. So he’s alongside him in a share of 11ths. One under through one is Elvis Smiley, the BMW Australian PGA champion of uh earlier this season, end of last year with the wraparound schedule. The way it looks, Nean here as well. some Tommy Fleetwood there in a stretch of the leaderboard he’s unfamiliar with, especially the last little while. We talk about his uh tour championship win. He came third and fourth as well respectively the two weeks prior. But how good it is to be into the next phase, phase two of our DP World Tour schedule and it is the back nine filled with historic opens and it all kicked off at the Belelfrey the British Masters there when Norin reigned supreme. It was two up in the mountains for Tristan Lawrence in Kron. What a finish it was last week. Worth going back to watch it. Wouldn’t we love to see something like what happened two years a one year ago I should say over Mroy it was Bradbury in France got his third at the Alfred Dunhill links. David V Goliath at the open dispa with Hadalgo over John Ram going to India for the second time this year and the back nine will all finish in Korea. been um thrilled in front of home crowds. It’s also the week that many try and hold on to their cards. So very pressure-packed week 40, not to mention what comes after at the playoffs, Abu Dhabi and Dubai. [Music] So this our third of five Rolex series events of the season of Till Hatton and Chris Gotup taking the first two with the way that the season pans out. The final Fortnite. So many twists and turns still to come in the race to Dubai with Mroy leading. We get down to five. Really tough pin today just on the front eight on three from the right. That’s a beauty. [Applause] Fifth T. Tommy Justin’s come up short unfortunately. Or is it an absolute beauty? I think Justin’s in the bunker. I can’t quite see it. That’s going to be tough. Wind swirling. It’s into off the right here on five. Should be a six iron for Fleetwood, but it’s a good one. He’s got to keep it down. It’s all about the ball flight. Great energy with the body through impact of Tommy Waywood there. Tough pin front left. This is where he’s headed. Miles away from the desired location. And it’s a very sectional green. the fifth back to four with looks to be maybe Matsyama or is he just lining it up? Is it Oberg? Nope. Fake out. Matsyama. You may have been right the first time. zero from probably Fitzpatrick. We just can’t see him. Long put up the green for kind of a slow start. One under after three. It’s not a bad start, but certainly not a good start. Good chance to get it back here. Possibly even get under par if he can hold this big ask. Would contribute£1,000 to the Golf Foundation. Not to be, but that will be added to throughout the week as we uh do Eagles for Education against the BMW uh group will donate £1,000. The official charity of the BMW PGA Championship is the Golf Foundation. Raised over £89,000 last year. Great charity, the uh for the kids, the Golf Foundation. No doubt about that. Played in a couple of those events and myself when I was 13, 14 years old. Got me traveling around the country a little bit, but never won anything. But fun all the same. Eventually, you did. Well, eventually the time you run, Sam, haven’t you? I hope I had it last week because there was so many eagles on the team in Ireland. One very special one from Mr. Moroy Matsyama. Great camera angle here. Looks like we’re a little bit off the left. He does seem to be aiming right. So maybe I’m confused. He’s gone straight and he went left. It was a tidy effort nonetheless. Good pace on it. That kind of slight ridge that bisects the left and right halves of uh the back section of this green. So, we jump up to Rose. Not in the bunker. He’s on the bank, which is a big break. I think it’s sticky though. This grass on the bank is tough. You got to make sure you keep the speed up through the ball. Little pop shot. Delightful. [Applause] Hardly ever wastes a shot with a careless error. Get some bad shots. They all do. Thinks very well. Fitzpatrick. part that slings from right to left. Tricky section of this green. Two access for Eagle today. So, not to be there for Fitzpatrick, but should be good enough for his birdie and his second on the round as we jump up to the par three. Yep. Tommy’s stalking it. Long, long p. Uh, it’s right to left all the way. Just gently keeps going and going and going. It will turn at the hole as well. So, beautiful greens though. There’s great light on this part when you look down. Sort of a part you fancy really. He’s number one on long putting on the PGA tour this year as well. Over 25 ft. So, maybe this is the one. A good look at his griff as well. His right hand goes on just a little bit more securely firmer than the one of Rose. Nicely lagged down there. Sun’s come out, Sam. It has a bit of warmth out there. All burn down the green outside left. Will it turn? Yes, it will. Lovely part. He gets back to level P. Difficult path threes here at Wentworth. And when you get a chance like this, you want to make it just on the left edge here for Horsaw Bridge, but I’m not sure it turns as much as you think here, but it definitely should go a bit. That’s just the third birdie we’ve seen so far today on what is currently the hardest hole on the course. The fifth belongs to Billy Horchel. Nicely done just off the right edge. Very nice. Very nice for Patrick. New putter for Matthew. He’s used a traditional blade style for many a year. A couple of different manufacturers, but that is definitely different. Look at that. As we go around, there’s so many of them using that mallet pin now. David, you’re a bit of a geek, aren’t you? You know all about these. Why is it so special? I’m a bit of a geek. Is that what you said? Yeah. A bit more context, please. damn thing. Uh uh I have no idea. I’ve always used the blade. They swing. They feel like they swing a little bit more on their own, don’t they? Don’t the mallets. No doubt about that. But uh I thought Matthew was a pretty good putter with his old one. Yeah, it’s a beautiful putter. Maybe the sweet spots bigger. Who knows? Balance. Yeah, to each their own. So Fitzpatrick is two under 34 in that group alongside David Malooi, Francesco Molinari as well. Seaweed Kim who got one of the two birdies at the fifth. There they are. It’s been a good season so far for Haong Lee. He too in the red alit one under through 10 today. It’s never dull watching howong Harry Hall here as well from down in Cornwall down in England’s southwest. He’s one under through seven. The wonderful new T. is at six. You see it there in the bottom of your picture. Big carry over the trap on the right. They usually carry the one on the left. It used to be such a simple little hole, but it’s a beauty now. So 282 to reach the bunker. Ped 12 on the three from the left. So it’s a quite an accessible pin. Slopes right to left and green. Yeah, the T’s actually back on the east course. Isn’t it? Yes. There’s a weird thing that comes on a rail that pull the fence out when the tournament comes. Then they close it back up again. Yeah. So flower beds on railway tracks. It’s quite clever, actually. You’re looking at me as if I’m mad, Alison. No, it sounds interesting. Yeah. Picture some railway tracks and some lovely flower beds in boxes and they slide them across and close off the east course. driver for Horshaw. And then you walk through there up onto the east and there’s that sixth T, the championship T. That’s perfection from Horell. You’ll see a mix of clubs off this T. Drivers, threewoods, long irons. Back at five for Matsyama. Seen the pin on the front right. Front left’s the hardest pin. Front right’s probably second hardest. That’s okay. Another beautiful iron shot from the Japanese player. Two wood I would say. Teed quite high. bunker down the right that he’ll be trying to avoid is at 280 yards. There you see it. He knew he couldn’t reach that bunker with that particular club. So nice play but right rough not ideal if it’s Patrick just a long iron might be five iron sure lovely swing watching it intently straight at it probably perfect line should release down a little bit so much talked about the coaching of the game of golf nowadays and golf instruction uction. You watch these great players, they all do it very differently. Fitzpatrick’s grip is not the most pleasant to look at if you’re an afficionado of golf grips, but it works beautifully cuz he knows what he’s doing with it. A strong grip always felt great to me, but I could never use it. Snap hook every shot. Just down the left a touch for Tommy. Where you hanging out next week? [Music] There’s a very good mic near these people walking up the fair. We need to be careful what they say. Oh yes, they don’t spot that mic. There’s a wonderful story of an Australian boy that did seven opens, consecutive of opens. I’ll give you the answer after. this beautiful swing. He built his own uh I don’t know what you call those furry things that they hang out behind them. Fairy Mike. Furry Mike. That’s the one. He built his own and he slipped in under the under the ropes for seven consecutive open championships with the final group. Away every time. Oh, don’t try that at home. They’ll be checking everyone’s passes at the uh at the open next year as they do all throughout the season here on the race to Dubai. It’s good having you along with us for the ride this year as we march our way into week 35 of 42 and into the back nine as we travel the globe in search of our best player on the DP World Tour. tick off some amazing cities uh along the way in our five global swings. Then the back nine, we thought it couldn’t be beaten last year, but how good it’s been already. This is just week four. And then it all ends in the playoffs. The UAE, Abu Dhabi, the top 70 make it there. The top 50 through to the DP World Tour Championship to the Earth Course. There can only be one champion. Rory Maroy took home both trophies last year, his sixth and tied Seby’s record as he does his best to hunt down Monty who has the most Harry Van trophies of all. And there he is in pole position once again. Will he be caught after last week’s victory at the Amjan Irish Open boosted his tally? will take some golf over the next seven or eight weeks to do so. Marco Pench doing his best amongst others. Terrell Hatton with a Rolex series win earlier this season in Dubai himself as well. So, he’s inside the top five. So, the birdies and bogeies and 22 PS down the sixth so far. playing just in the red at the moment. It’s power four. Someone’s put the heaters on. It’s lovely out here now. Beautiful. Think time to make some birdies for this group. I was just bringing you a cup of tea, Jim. You’re only about 100 yards away. I just popped in for a quick coffee, Sam, actually. But thank you for the thought. Could have said hello. Hello. Hope it was nicer than my coffee. I’ve just made myself one. It was horrible. You’re rubbish at coffee. I am. Yeah. Heard that. Well, this left pin 157 for Fleetwood. And it feels like the wind’s gone now from where he is. Ball above his feet. He’s going to hook. It’s got to be a wedge. It’s controlling the spin because he’s going to be hooking into this left pin. and anything left is a nogo zone. So, good lie. It’s just above his feet. So, you’re going to he’s going to hook it. It’s just a case of he wants to pitch it probably 20 ft right at the pin and get some spin if he can. That’s what he’d be looking at. Wind off the right, I think. No, no. Looking at the clouds. Go with the clouds. They’re off the left. It just swirls in these trees. It fools you guys, doesn’t it? You’ve got to go with a wind map, I believe. And that’s where it is. Off the left. Yeah, in off the left. Southwest. The wind director, David. Well, not really. I said it was easterly this morning as noted by everybody who’s watching, I’m sure, which was yesterday’s forecast. That’s not much help. Not an easy shot though with this left pin here. He’s got to pitch middle of the green. Try and spin it down there. The line’s right on it. Didn’t quite come down the hill as it should have done. Shame. That’s where he was aiming. Nice course management though. Left was an easy mistake to make there. Great angle for Fitzpatrick here. Should bit off the right hand side. He’s not hit it hard enough, has he? Quite now. Justin Rose 142, but he’s not got much here. He’s got to go low, I think. Trying to hit. He’s got to cut it to get it on the green out the rough. Oh, no. He’s gone up and over. Went over, Jamie. Goodness. Can’t reach from there. Not with that height. No. did all right. So difficult to cut it out of rough grass gets in the way between contact on the ball and you don’t spot in part the spin you want to put on it. Never been good down the right hand side of six has it? No. It’s just a poor angle. Everything about it shoddy. Better from here though. Yeah. 126 for Billy. gap wedge. Is he going to go at it? I suspect he will. Poor one really from where he was the perfect T-shot course looks absolutely magnificent on our screens. brisk routine for Obe. This is a different touch as well. They’re all changing. I can see why. Excellent birdie for two in a row. It’s back to one under or gets to one under. Yes. One of those birdies more expected than the other. The fourth hole, the par five here plays as one of the easiest holes all year long, especially with the team moved up for pace of play reasons really the first two days. We go to Matsyama from the shadows here at five. That’s a pretty good start to his BMW. PGA Tour. PGA Tour BMW. Let me get a Wenworth career. Two birdies. Three cars for Matama. You just warmed up to it. How? And here’s how it looks. There is uh quite the stack of players on top of the leaderboard at the moment. Six of them in all at four under par. Patelli is uh going along nicely. made a bogey down the ninth. So, they aren’t there to be found, but we’re seeing more red than anything else uh on the scorecards at the moment. Matt Fitzpatrick tucked in alongside Matsyama, Matt Wallace as well at two under Ry like Justin Rose. So many of these English players uh and not just the English who have come to Wentworth over the years. So many players, Jamie, inspired to take up the game of golf by uh this event. Yes, indeed. Yes. Most of the players that are playing. Tight lie for Rosie’s going to spin. Sounded good. Go on, spin up. There we go. That was a beautiful shot and perfect action. Lovely to watch the great players play shots like that. I know how many amateurs even I struggle with that shot now. That was very nice. So is this swing driver of the choice. Lot of club for Ludvik off there. Bunkers to avoid up the right. Remember we did say right on Q. You were just a bit late. You should have told him before he hit it. Yeah, he’s got the wrong man on the bag. I agree. Joe’s discovering. Bring Joe. Well, I could bring Joe into the box and I could carry for all would all would be well. There’s no way you could carry a bag around here. Valid point. I did forget about the carrying of the bag. This green has changed since they’ve relayed it. It used to go quite a bit right to left from here, but I don’t think it does. Looks like it should, but He was actually expecting that to go back right there. You saw his hand movements for it to come back at the end. It didn’t. That’s Yama, the driver as well. He’s not picked it up yet. Maybe up the right edge. Mr. trap. Oh, it was straight at it. Did well to stop. Bberg flew into the back of that bunker. Pretty good shot here for Tommy. And uh pretty straight down the hill as well. It’s quite quick this could get away from him with a bit of pace, but not much break on this one. Not much pace either. It’s a complete misjudgment. Played so much golf in the states where the Greens are 12 13 on the st meter week in week out. As talented as he or all these players are, it really is difficult to adjust to a change of pace. Green speed about 11 ft in theory yesterday. might not have been able to prepare quite as as much all the way that they wanted to today given the rain yesterday on that front down the left for Fitzpatrick. Might be speaking to his bank manager as well, Flewood. Few decisions to make there. He’s been coming in really quite well of late. Yes, a pretty penny the last three weeks of the PGA tour. Now Rose for his part. Nothing in this. Just dead straight. We see the line on the top of the ball. So they aim at with the line and just tap it in. When you first do that, if you struggle around, it’s like cheating when you use a line. If you can get it lined up properly, you’ll get someone to do it for you. it to know where you’re aiming is a real real win on the greens, even if you’re just playing at home at the weekend. And then you start to realize how bad you are at reading greens and then you get frustrated again. You think about giving up and throw the clubs in the locker. They invented one that had a couple of lights on it. So you put it down and it shone against the wall and it showed you until they were both the same place, the spots that you weren’t aiming straight. Fleetwood. It is a four there at six. It was 10 million by the way. What he walked away with at the tour championship. Not to mention the the 2n the two weeks before. But he is birdie free at the moment. A rarity on any golf course at the moment for Tommy Fleetwood. It’ll come. Of course, that group did quite well, those that were playing in the uh FedEx Cup playoffs with Justin Rose taking the FedEx St. Jude Championship in a playoff, the first of the three. Fleetwood taking the last Billy Horaw just happy to be back. gone past it behind you. I think so much of his selection for the Ryder Cup came down to the US Open. The fact that he uh also applies his trade so often in the US comfort zone for Fitzpatrick. Yeah, I’d agree with that. And he’s in great form. I mean, hasn’t got a good RDER Cup record. Everyone’s aware of that, including Matthew himself, but did get a point on the board last time round and of course part of that winning team. So, good vibes down the hill at the seventh. It’s uh metal wood down the bottom and then a pitch to the green. But an awkward T- shot sort of you feel like you’re aiming to cross yourself off this tea. At least I always did down the hill. Just be as lofted wood here for Horseshaw. Breeze off the right slightly hurting them as well. And it’s soft. So, you don’t want to be caught on that hill. You got to get it down there. Yes, players used to the ball scurrying down the steep bank on the seventh fairway, but maybe not the case this week. And certainly not from there. Awkward back pin today. That makes things tricky. Well, this is interesting for Rose. I was beaten a foo on the range and he said this is the only problem T-shot because he’s got a sevenwood or a mini driver. It’s a mini driver I’m hearing in my ear because he won’t get the sevenwood down on the flat today. You don’t want to be on that hill. So, he’s got to take a bit off this. Maybe play a hold off shot. But there when they set their clubs up, there’s always one or two T-shots which might not suit what they’ve got and they just have to manufacture something. And that’s what he’s doing here. But he he can’t run out with this club either. I don’t think not as soft as it has. Jamie could be the perfect club pitch just in the middle of the flat bit at the bottom. It’s cutting back exactly as Jamie said. Beautiful shot. Plenty of room to spare. 285 to the end of the fairway. Yeah, that went very high. That one for Rose. I’ve got to think Tommy’s got his sevenwood. Don’t think he’ll play his mini. He might do. It’s not his big-headed mini driver, is it? Sam, you got one of those this week. He’s also got a croissant. Oh, can’t he won’t hit the ball very far with the cross on. Or maybe he would. Birdie chance, but you got to get the ball on the fairway here. Great timing there, Jamie. Thank you for that. And yes, I did get a new uh Taylor Mini driver. Absolutely magnificent as the R seven. It was my favorite driver. and haven’t had a chance to hit it yet, but uh it looks beautiful. Can often be a let down once you start hitting them though, isn’t it? Oh, that’s not what I thought it was going to do. But it might be your new favorite, Sam. It’s not much competition. It’s pretty handy from the thick rough over there down the six for Fitzpatrick. So finds the putting surface there at the par four. Lovely angle for Hideki. And this looks to be on a direct line. Sensibly aggressive. 12 feet down the hill for his birdie three. I could see him enjoying uh the west course here at Wentworth. Not that you wouldn’t enjoy the the other two as well. The par 3’s just uh being manicured. Looks fantastic as well. Off it goes for Oberg. It’s been completely re redesigned Allison. It is a magnificent outright one from Oberg. Good shot out the bunker though. nice history for Japanese players and so forth over the years. Ioki in the world match play years ago. Centuri world match players won a flat, didn’t he? At Glenn Eagles when he holding one at the second. We got an apartment in uh Glenny Eagles. That’s not bad. All the more reason to come to this part of the world. We haven’t had a Japanese winner of this event. BMW PGA Championship. Never know. There he is, Matsyama inside the top 10. Much to the delight of those from the the land of the rising sun, as it’s known. Plenty of treeine golf courses over there as well, especially up in the north. Wonderful place to play golf, Japan. They do things oh so well and just slightly differently. Everything about it, man. A real thrill to play over there. Yeah, it is a fantastic golfing destination. Great to see how they do play the uh the game all over the world. Stop for lunch halfway. Sounds pretty good to me. Sam, we bit sacky just to warm me up. Depends how the front nine’s gone. Oh, no it doesn’t. All right. Only man uh on the fairway down there is Justin Rose and the two down the left. Horses lies all well it’s not great but could be a lot worse the thick stuff down the left they’ve grown it narrowed the fairway in this year at this pinch point. So the further you go the wider it is. So it’ be horial to go first but he can get to the back of the ball which is always crucial. 51 up the hill. Pin on this back tier. We all know this hole with this big ledge at the top and a big slope that gets it there. So, all he’d be thinking about is getting the contact and trying to get it on the top somehow or she’ll be aiming left to this pin on the right. Was all always difficult to get up the top half Jamie even from the fairway. Yeah, it’s a hard shot to gauge, isn’t it? But I don’t think he’s worried about it. It’s just more the contact. Just probably a 9 wedge. Probably a wedge back foot this. But you get as hard as you like. Go ball. Go go go behind, but he’ll’s very disappointed. That was a hard two up from down there. Now Tommy um he’s in that first cut lies all right 148 I think it’s an advantage here to be in this rough you’re not going to spin it into the breeze up the hill if you’re on the fairway here controlling the spin that these guys are thinking of but you won’t have that problem from here be a wedge good one playing about 156 I reckon eight onto this but good angle lies Good. It’s all there for Tommy this one. I always think if you can find that back plateau when the bin is up there, you’ve done well. About nine yards deep. Straight at it. Oh, that’s better, Tommy. That’s better. Count those nine yards with ease. Fleetwood. Easier task. on this autumn Thursday I guess with the moisture in the ground 40 from 144. Now his issue is controlling the spin because he’s going to have to pitch it past the flag really up the hill. It’s going to spin. It’s just about controlling it really. So he’s going to have to flirt with the back edge I think to get it close here. Sounded a bit thin. Is it up? Oh, it’s a little big. Maybe it did thin a wee bit. Tricky chip, but not impossible. Wonderful shot up there. But six feet from Tommy Fleetwood. Now Fitzpatrick as ever. Three practice strokes looking at the hole. Wonderful putter. Another just coming up shy. He goes through a couple of markers. Golf ball’s got a lot on it, doesn’t it? For Fitzpatrick. It does. You’re right. If there’s any relevance to why he does that, I’m not so sure. down the hill. How close it came a lot a lot of the left and back edge there. Unlucky that didn’t fall for three birdies in a row. [Applause] Solid start though after bing in the first. I think you’d be hardressed to find a more enjoyable walk around a golf course throughout the season on the DP World Tour. Lots of shade, beautiful trees all around and the spectator can see everything and every hole. There’s nothing where you got to climb up hills peering over. That’s down the hill. He’s got the speed. He’s Oh, just just missed it on the right. But it should be said if you if you do come here to Worth, take a mat cuz you’re you’re in it for the long haul. Once you start start on one, there’s no there’s no turning back. The way this golf course snakes its way through the property. You can pop into the halfway heart at town and call for a taxi. Get an Uber there, pick you up, bring you in. Well, it should be Horseshoe, but I think Rosie might come on first here. What’s going on? I think Rosy’s going. Billy does look interested. Well, what do you do here? I think you put He’s got the eye now. I thought he might hit the lofted wood or putt it. There’s not much in front of him, but he’s chipping it. Dangerous straight down the hill. Very gentle with this. Yeah, he’s having another think about it. Scratch of the head. Could he blade it, Jamie, or is there too much in front of him? Yeah, he could do. I I thought it was a fivewood type shot or a putter. Actually, he could putt this. It’s not much in front. What’s he going to do now? Oh, he’s gone for the wood. It’s into the wind. It’s into the wind. It’s not a big one. I think this is the club. Just a little pop. The one you used to when the US Open on the very final hole. You just got to get it through the rough though. Just tickle it over that rough and it’ll find its way to the flag. But this is tricky. Yeah, this is a a clever little shot that most of the pros use. It’s just so simple just to bump it forward. Didn’t quite get the line, did he? It was very quick though, wasn’t it? Only creeped onto the green and got a hole high. It’s always been difficult for behind seven. I always encourage the amateur partners and the proams to try the hybrid or the fivewood from around the greens with Nick’s success. It has to be said. What Bon have tea just a fairway wood down the hill seems to like it. Should be perfect. Yeah, it’s a great concept. The the reason they do it is that the size and the flatness of the sole of the wood flattens the rough down and then it gets good contact on the ball and just pops it forward. It’s a good shot to learn up the hill. It’s a little bit left to right up the slope and then it’s straight. Great speed. That was the bulk of the job needing to be done for Horell. A man hammer. Same club. Just a nice fairy wood. Loves it. The right half. Very nice. Preferring live. So no reason to worry about mud on the ball. No course record. with preferred lights. So that prize can’t be won yet. No, maybe the next three days. We’ll see. Maybe you’re playing along in the fantasy DP World Tour. I wonder if you picked Rory, Tommy Fleetwood with the fort, Formhorse, maybe even a wild card of Kiraet, Appy Barnat. Scan that QR code. Play along with us throughout the season. Commentators are exceptionally easy to beat now. Fleetwood better has a line on the ball but not using it there. Nice and natural. First birdie at last for Fleetwood. That was never uh going anywhere else. Wonder how different he feels now he got the burden of not having won in America off his back. I mean, you know, he’s a great player anyway. We love Tommy. He’s a fine swinger. Lots going for him. But definitely, I think lighten lightened the load somewhat, Sam. 100%. It’s uh a lot to follow. There’ll be plenty to follow from that. Maybe get his first major next. Well, he’s come close before back in 2019. Justin Rose came close at the Masters this year. This for really is an amazing character, an amazing athlete. He 45 now is that his age? Amazing. Well, there’s the grip of Fitzpatrick. It’s an overlapping grip. Very strong in the left hand to really turn through and return those hands to the same position otherwise the ball will go to the left. There’s never been a better player on the Champions in America than Bernardon Langanger. And Langer had the strongest grip you could imagine. And he changed it when he went to the Champions St. He changed it. He now has a quite a weak left hand with all those victories. Yes, it’s worked quite well for him for change, hasn’t it? Change on top as well after three birdies in a row here at the BMW PGA Championship. It’s Tom Vayant who leads the way. [Music] Isn’t France well represented out there at the moment? They’ve got three players in the top five at the moment, as well as Jung Wong Co and Antoine Rosnner. Both of them are bogey free out there. And for under Pan is Anelora, young Spanish rookie coming through the ranks. Same two of Martin Kubra who took the victory in Turkey earlier this season. There is Justin Rose and Billy Horchel with Big Oberg. So our feature groups, five of our six players under par at the moment. Tommy might join them soon after the birdie at seven. But this is what awaits them down the eighth. This little bisected par four hower. Yeah, it’s a cracking hole. It certainly is. No doubt about that. And there you see there’s the trouble about 250. There’s a little ridge. You’ve got a choice. You play short of it or you play over. And the benefit of going over is the second shot is to this very narrow slither of a green just alongside the wonderful water hazard. We call it penalty area. And it gives you choices. [Music] Here it is. Yeah. I think this is a mini driver for Fleawood. It is, Jimmy. Yeah. Perfect. 270 to carry those mounds. You can kill this hole with the T-shot. I think lay back. It’s a tough shot. Yeah. Perfect. Awkward though, isn’t it? This T-shot. Yeah, the mini driver is perfect for it though, isn’t it, Jimmy? Because it could probably hit driver in the water. Yeah, that’s right. Again, I was talking to them on the range and they were sort of saying this is mini driver again. I don’t really like that mini driver term. I’ve got to be honest with you. I preer two wood or brassy. Yeah, brassy. Yeah, reinventing the wheel, aren’t we? Am I old? Am I getting old? We just want to keep you happy, Jamie. Impossible. Jamie, you’re not getting old. This is a three or five. What’s a Baffy or Mashy? He hasn’t got a tie on though, has he? Looks like three-wood. He carries everything. It will be 3-wood. And he did. Perfect. Let’s pick things up over here at seven with Fitzpatrick. Ideal place to attack this pin from. Oh, I did say a cracker. What a beautiful shot from Fitzpatrick. And Rose with his mini driver as well. It’s a great club for this hole. Strong three-wood mini driver. Call it what you like. The actress. You’re going to have to call it the actress. You had me thinking then, hal, that’s dangerous. I know that’s right. That’s in trouble. He’s okay. He’s okay. He’s not He’s not Nothing impeding him around the ball. Not sure about the angle. He’s got a nice bare lie. It was a poor shot. One off the the par five. Fourth as well. Miles right. He’s got a marker. Fitzpatrick to attack now. Does it hold? Oh, not on your Nelly. There is more than a little local knowledge to be found throughout your career. That’s Yammer on debut. Oberg did well on his. Oh, another pure strike. A pound to Fitzpatrick. There’s the pin. You’re a cheap date pound for it. There’s the 10 or surely. There’s the new putter of Fitzpatrick. Face balanced. You can see there. It still has grooves in it. Bettonardi I think made them. Yes. Putter was what he used to use all those years ago. I still use mine. I used it to win here in 2006. Still in the bag. My favorite. Very nice. They all have female names. named whoever designed the putter or one of the players could uh could name the putter. Met if you Gusen used to uh he used one for a while Tracy his was called his his lovely wife of course mine was called a Cali Cali Cali that’s not my wife’s name I don’t remember Cali I didn’t name it Cali is in Colombia isn’t it not sure female Christian name though I think anyway we move on he’s got a new clutcher in the bay you know the Is that Rachel? There’s something about the grooves in the face that it definitely does something. Not sure what. Gets the ball rolling a bit quicker. Well, it worked for you. Some days he calls it Karen. Plenty of ways to find a birdie down the eighth. Both uh short and long of where it pinches in on the fairway right where Billy Horchel is. Yeah. Somewhat strange distance Billy’s hit his but it’s absolutely fine just through that little gap the runway. You can see where all the trouble lies. Clumps of horrible thick rough where you wouldn’t want to be have as you navigate that penalty area. Well, it’s turning into a beautiful morning out here in the links. Bogatar is the capital of Colombia. Samuel, you’re quite right, Samuel. I won the Colombian Open in Car’s getting confused. It’s okay. It was a capital for me. I’ll do the geography. You can do I don’t know what Scottish dancing in the quiz. How can do trivia and Alli’s got the rest. 105 Horseshaw. This is perfect. But this front pin’s dangerous. Not much right of it. [Music] Trackman telling us it’s just down short right. Finds that little Dell. So disappointed with that, David, weren’t he? That was very poor from the fairway. Well, he just because he’s in absolute prime position there. took care of most of the hole off with the T-shot. Or so one thought. Is Tommy going to go? No, he’s not. It’s going to be Justin 111. Um Li’s all right. He’s just got a bit of tree trouble in front of him. You can keep it down a little bit off this line and punch it, but it’ll be easy to get close. But he’s got away with it. You’d have to think bare light. Just some branches sticking out in front of him on the perfect angle of a wedge shot. So, just have to manufacture something here. Rosie, I think he’ll go a bit lower. Back foot. He’s got up and down five times now already, Justin, today. So, the wedge plays good, the chipping’s good. Just trying to find his game a bit, that’s all. Yeah, you make an interesting point. These top players, you assume they play brilliantly all the time, but they don’t. But one part of their game is normally brilliant on any given day, allowing them to score equally as well. Good course management from that position taking care of the front edge of the green and just accepting a couple of putts for a par with the pan back. You could see how closely it is cut or looks as much from where Rose was. This is where Matsyama is. Needs a running start at it from down there. It’s good touch. Nearly hit by a back swing there. Yes, it was a It was a proper back swing, wasn’t it? Fleetwood from 90 yards in. They’re trying to work out the wind. He’s backed off it a couple of times. Clouds stay down off the right. You just see they’re a little bit uncertain. And with this front pin, you tend to maybe play on the cautious side and go four or five by the lob wedge. Although he’s that close, it’s not that easy actually with his front pin. Danger is spinning it back in the water. [Music] And a quick glance back down to the turf. Plenty of it came up. Not quite the strike that uh Tommy Fleetwood desired there at eight. Matt Fitzpatrick did tap in for his third birdie of the round by the way back at seven. It is a little indecisive for Fleetwood. Hopefully Hov has picked his line. Going to execute here. And that’s how it played out. On an accomplished start after a bogey at the opening hole, he’s rided the ship really nicely. So those uh spectators through the gates early are being treated to quite a bit of red early doors here. Not much wind around. uh receptive greens, preferred lies. There is lots lining up for the players at the moment. Yeah, they’ll probably wander around with these feature groups and then end up in the tented village just behind the 18th green which is well, it’s a wonderful place to hang out. All sorts of things going on. Big screens to watch the golf bars, restaurants, lots of BMWs on show. Could be an expensive day out if you drink a little too much and then put a nice deposit down on the latest car. I think that’s probably the plan. And why not? Wonderful vehicles. Yeah. Aren’t they just You can go and take a look at a few in the sponsor village, of course. Normally have a 100 foot putt there as well that you can take it. It’s a charity donation, which is all good unless you’ve got three young kids as I’ve got. Turns out it’s £21 for 47 seconds of fun. That all going to a good cause. Look at all these people kind of clustered below the the trees down there in eighth. Couple behind the eighth T as well. Little congregation of holes in this section of the golf course. Oberg, off it goes. It’s a real sign of how the game’s changed. Just about every player taking this T-shot on nowadays. wasn’t always the case. Horseshoe had the wedge out, but he was always going to b this. This fringe is too nice not to butt through it left or right. Steady, steady, steady. This pin is a beauty, isn’t it? Yeah. Shortens the hole up and makes it more difficult. Brilliant. Barely on the front edge of the green. Fitzpatrick at eight. He’s playing short of the ridge. First we’ve seen playing it the more traditional way. So pressuring the second shot rather than the T- shot for Fifth Patrick. That’s a long way back too. A long way back. Up ahead, Justin Rose. Yeah. Grinding away here on this birdie B. Really two parts, isn’t it? Left to right, all the way or goes down into a bit of a hollow and back up the other side here. The Justin. Yeah, good. It was tracking. But it will end in two PS [Applause] just trottting along nicely at one under par. Three par fives remaining for him. Remember that’s a Yammer with three wood. This should be able to carry in the red. Oh goodness me. This is straight right I think. That will be tricky, man. It’s not a bad night. It’s quite over to Jamie and Tommy Fleetwood. Yeah, he’s not quite on it yet, is he, Tommy? He’s level parlor, so nothing no panic. Plenty of par five to come. Off the left here for the birdie. Much better roll. Maybe just becoming attuned to the pace of these greens. All the surfaces are always very hard to blame on this layout as pristine as it is. Yeah. That’s very disappointing, Alison, isn’t it? You’re nothing to blame. No, not on this uh the 007 bent grass. It’s lush. Yeah, magnificent. So, he’s had a good read here, Horaw. Look at this. Look, he just creeps up on it and surprises it. Well, he’ll be fuming. Thought that ball might make its way into the creek, but he’s a classy chap. It is a bogey from 90 yards, which is an unforced error, Sam. Yeah, absolutely. Is a dangerous pin, but not a pin you’d think be thinking of tough par. Just a tougher BY with a right on the front, six feet on the green. It looks like quite a big collar around the penalty area there. Maybe it just will stop a few balls making their way into the Aua. Maybe not if it’s bouncing in, but if it was screwing back towards that area, might just hold it in its tracks. There we go. That’s a clean card. Allison. Yes. No troubles today for Justin Rose. We’ve had 12 birdies, uh, three bogeies, two others during the eighth. So, there was some trouble to be found, but like we say, more birdies than anything else to this whole location. Nice two putt from distance for Fleetwood. A humble superstar. Fleetwood. Most popular victory for a long time. I’d say 20 years since Andy. Well, Jane Lowry’s win in Port Rush last year was pretty special. But but to win an America, I think Thomas was well received by many many people. Bit of a strange play from Fitzy off the te leaving 160 yards in and I guess it is down breeze. So 9/8 time acquired for the second. Yeah, I think that’s the more sens right. Not really a pin you can attack from this far back, one would imagine. There’s the grip again. Sometimes that little right hand pinky comes off at impact. Looks like it’s straight at it. It’s a beauty. Attack it. He did. Shows what I know. Just dropped on a really nice number there. Do you fancy? Yeah. 160. As you said, it’s a 9 iron or an 8 iron. It’s not going to be a difficult shot for a player for this class. Ninth T. Always a tough path for railway down the OB. Here’s the actress again. He loves this club. Mini driver it’s called really good for Jamie. 270 to the bunkers on the left. Oh, it’s not going to carry it. Not far over the one on the right. 250. It made it and it’s sitting up. Good break for Fleetwood. Not his best. Absolutely. No carry at all for them there. And Matsayyama coming out this right rough. Good lie though. It’s 130 yards. Not a big shot at all. That’s very nice. Beautifully played. benefit of coming out of didn’t have any back spin on it. Otherwise, that would have come back down the hill, but it’s absolutely fine. The organized setup of Justin Rose. He’s always looked like a pro over the ball driver for Justin. And it should split the two bunkers, which it does nicely. Playing over its par. Plus 0.27. So one of the tougher holes. In fact, the toughest hole on the front line. Lovely action again from Wberg. No spin. Shame. Expected that to zip back down the green. And now Horell needs a draw really up this night. Always has done, always will do. Well, he’s just a little unsettled there, isn’t he? It’s quite important to back off, start again. Good lesson for all you at home. had a bad thaw. Get rid of that. You ever get a chance, watch him on the range. He’s very impressive. It’s such a beautiful ball flight. It’s lovely to watch. Simple swing. It’s a simple game. Well, here we are. Tom Vale the Frenchman leading the way six under through his 16 holes here at the BMW PJ Championship just ahead of co Aaron Cochril and Antoine Rosa that’s the top four [Music] Patrick just on the bottom region of the first page of the leaderboard trio of Englishmen at two under parry Matt Wallace fresh off his RDER Cup disappointment and some might say the same for Aaron Ry. Two players certainly trying to make their way to Beth Paige. We’ll have to wait for a dare manner in a couple of years time. There’s Rose alongside Bansel Scott Connor going nicely. One through 12 holes as well. International flavor. Minimu Lee making the journey over to the outskirts of London under path for his day so far. England’s Lorie Caner, he lives just down the road. Ran very close a couple of years ago at this title. Just fell short by one. Looking forward to this week. No just missing on the high side. I used to call it the pro side. I always thought all misses were equal. I agree. Short, long, left, right. Who cares? It’s not in very or nothing sometimes. How He’s doing all the right things right now, isn’t he? Matsiyama, great job to hear. Good chance to get himself to three under. It’s a fraction right to left this and usually sets his right hand on the putter first. Most people always knock to end beautifully. Nice birdie. Three under par. Yeah, that fast step and collection of ball works well until it hits a spike mark and misses and you feel like a right fool. The view from nine green back down towards the fairway and the right side of it. Again, on the West Course, if you can make your par, you you’re happy no matter how good a golfer you are. It’s not the biggest of greens. Beautifully placed bunkers on that hole, David, that get in the way on both sides of the fairway. It’s a we man with a fancy haircut and a nice swing. Sounds like Tommy Fleetwood. Bit of stack and tilt going on with the young man there as well. Maybe a bit more weight shift needed, but he’ll get there. Nothing wrong with that, David. Nothing wrong with that at all. Well, he’s got 197 Fleetwood, but it trees all the way in front of him. So, he’s got to hit cut. He’s got to cut this to the Yeah. back left pin. And he’s got a bit of a clump just behind the ball as well just to make it a little bit more difficult. Got his number one fan there. Oh, he’s he’s not taking his eyes off. It’s so nice to see that the kids in Ireland last week was extraordinary. David Tommy’s got a good set of hair on him, but I think the young lad’s outdone in there. That’s He’s got the fade away at the back and the bit of jelly at the front. A brilliant hairstyle. Very jealous, David. Yes. You, not me. Yeah. Uh, now he’s got to cut this. His five iron goes 215. So that’s probably too much club, but he’s into the wind. So fact he’s cutting it, I would think it is that club. If he’s going to go up over the tree a bit, it’s a six. He’s a little clump behind the ball, so he’s got to go a bit steeper here, Tommy, to get the strike. Well, it’s scared through the green. It was brilliant for line. Bit unfortunate, but it’s left a testy third, you’d have to say. Oh, yeah. That little bit of rough they just went into now. Fits with another birdie just to get the four under. Oh, Luke Donald will be very happy watching this. He’s picked the right man. Well, and if he’s got a a new improved putter in the back, then Luke will be he’ll be doing a jig because he was the best buzzer in the team anyway. Rose 184 into the draft playing about 193. Should be a six. Just a smooth six. Without the wind and everything, he might pummel a seven, but don’t know. That might be a seven. Still not a breath of wind, Jimmy. There’s a bit. Yeah, there’s half half into him, Sam. Yeah, just enough to make you think. [Music] Beautiful swing. Looks beautiful. Right on it. Just a little shy. Lovely iron shot though. Such a simple swing. Horell’s driven the ball well. 171 with a driver. He’s driven it well. Anyway, and no tree trouble for him. You can stare it right down. Seven iron. He’s got sort of between clubs, I think. Changed clubs. Breeze just in off the left a little bit. So, can you get it pin high? It’s never easy here at nine, especially with a back pin. [Music] There it is over in that little step cut pin high left I believe. Not sure any of them have stopped at the halfway hut. I think they’ve taken their own snacks to the ninth tea. Sausage sandwiches is the is part of the course in the hut. I think Sam it certainly is. Yeah. Very competitive the sandwich selection in this part of the world. Yes. It’s uh it’s a great thing a halfway hut. It’s fun. You know, time to sit be and talk about what’s gone wrong in the front nine. How much you going to beat them on the back? Mine is Patrick driver. Great driver of the ball. So, gained a lot of distance just before he won the US Open. Oh, this is commentator’s curse. That’s horrific. Oh, for goodness sake. Heather as well. Shame. Very poor one for Patrick there. He used the uh the stack system, didn’t he? Where you you keep adding weights to a shaft and swing at different speeds. There’s a lot with his biomechanics as well. Yeah, I bought the same system actually after one of my pram partners mentioned that he was hitting it past me. Made that investment. Tried it once. You have to do a you have to do it once to sort of set your your base level and then it hurt my back so much it’s still gathering dust in the cupboard. I don’t know. Sure. It’s more your fault than the stack systems fault somehow. We’re ridic golfers are ridiculous. We were still I’m 72 and still trying to find the secret. My dad passed the 84 85 and he was looking for the secret. It’s maddening, isn’t it? It’s wonderful though. Well, it Yes, you’re right. I don’t mean to be too cynical. I’m not cynical. I love the game. It’s like a cruel mistress at times. Doesn’t always give you joy, but it’s the life’s work is great. So another fine drive from Matsyama. So he’s on the fairway this time round. Oberg now. Quite a strong left hand grip on Ludig as well. He just took the words out. I thought that that is a very strong grip. I’d never noticed that on him before. Still flabbergasted that Bernard Lang’s gone to a more neutral grip. It’s a great piece of village and won all those events on the champions too. Tommy floating it up now. It looks good. It looks good. It looks magnificent. What a shot. Oo, that was a really tough one to get stiff. Very good. Tommy hit a sprinkler with his second. That’s why it shot over the green. That was a bit unlucky. The third was exceptional. Good for us that that happened. That was an amazing chip shot from his fleetwood. Let me tell you about that lie. I can’t believe it. He just looked over me and smiled. This isn’t that easy either. Could get away from him here for Horseshaw. That’s where you just get a bit rusty when you’ve had that much time off round the greens. Have West Ham played Arsenal this year, Jamie? They will do at some point. Yeah. Not yet. They haven’t. Not yet. No, we haven’t beaten them yet. West Ham, they actually beat us this year at the Emirates. Well, last season rather. A proud Hammers fan is Billy Horchel. There’s a few of the players. Often carries the uh a bag with the West Ham Cutters. Actually, I think a couple of them celebrated with him. His victory, one of his two wins around here. Now Justin Rose. Yeah, a good shot from JR. Fa just telling me how well they’ve been playing and today it’s just not quite happening. But I said to him, he’s not playing great, but he’s one under two pots from here really. Yeah, we will see the second the forms come together the right way around for Justin Rose. He had a a stretch of five weeks with a you know withdrawal and three miss cuts in it since then. Hasn’t finished outside the top 30. Albeit it’s hard to do it in the final week of the year on the PGA tour, but it did include a win and a couple of top 21s. He has really been trending right at the right time in terms of Beth Page Black. A tricky one for his par for Horell. Missed the green left. Poor chip to here. A good putt will solve all of that. And there it is. Well done, Willie. I think one of those bracelets said fearless, the black one on his uh his left wrist. I tried to read it earlier when there with a great angle of it. You could see the letters on it. See, if you were at home, you just press pause and you can read that quite easily. Well, the first one was slow and you would have to think not too much in the way of break here. Perhaps just inside left. It’s more the fact that he shouldn’t be here that is the difficulty of this putt. Really poor first ever. There we go. delicately placed with the right hand. Fleetwood is a bit firmer and feathers it into the right hand side. Think he thought that missed, but it didn’t. Oberg has bragging rights to back down the fairway here at nine. Should be Fitzpatrick to go first from down on the left. See what the lie’s like. Well, at least at least you can see it. And Heather, normally you can get a connection on this, you know. I reckon this will be on the green. It’s a little bit steep on it. Come down quicker instead of sweeping it off. You miss the heather on the down swing cuz if you catch that it will turn the club. Well the candy that’s just okay. Quite a good leave really from there. Plenty of green to work with, design a chip shot that can get it up within six feet. And one of the things that really good players, pros obviously being that do better than the amateurs, which is designing the shot around the green, seeing what you can do, painting the picture in your own eye. This one’s pretty simple. However, from the middle of the fairway, Metsy Yama central pin. Don’t go long. You’ll be thinking 10 ft short directly at it. Just a seven iron at most. 10th back there in the pines. He’s trying to work the wind out again. Look up, Tommy. Look up. There you go. There’s the cloud straight behind me. It swirls. 188. You can’t get eight on there, I don’t think. This is 8 173. And this is Is it Is there 15 yards of wind? I don’t think so. It’s probably a little seven. He might pommelate. I understand there’s a celebrity behind the green. Well, if he pulls it, he can head it back on the green. That’s good with his head. Hope not. Used to be shaved this bank on the left. He could bring it right off that down to the flag. He’s carried it too far. You can see how lush that grass is. Won’t come in off that bank on the left like it used to. He’s good golfer. Gareth Bell remember just there on the road. Practices like a pro often there once the kids have been deposited at school putting and chipping all day long. Trying to play the game like Oberg, which he probably never will, but you might get close. Luke’s one of the best in the world. I think he’s actually got the 17th of of sawrass in his backyard. He’s kind of his own little kind of mini golf course. Take you mean a replica. Replica. Of course. Rose now. Haven’t we all? All this should be certain for Justin. He’s a bit shorter than Tommy. He’s had a good look at that one with going over for Fleetwood. It’s picking up the breeze. I can tell you that. Another excellent iron shot from Rose. I like it when they miss greens. You get the chance to watch them chip. I think they’re just amazing around the greens, especially out the rough, these players, modern players. Not all of them, but most of them. That kind still sort of shaking my head with that pitch of Fleetwoods on the last at that line came out like a feather. Now Horseshoe I think Horses done pretty well to be honest didn’t play for 5 months. You can make some birdies on this back nine. Little draw into this left pin is required. Yeah, when you come back very often, you try to play kind of a basic style of golf. Don’t try and over exaggerate what you’re going to do. Don’t don’t try and be too perfect. Just hit some solid, sensible shots. And that was what came out of the swing of Horschel on that occasion. Yeah, Fitzpatrick uh on the green prior with a little work to do of his own from uh down. You can see the the slope he’s walking up. It’s near on shoulder high from uh the right side of this green. If you do miss it down there, So call it the best part of maybe 15 ft still to come for the par of course for Fitzpatrick who is four under and blemish free walks the number 16 in the world. That’s Yammer. He’s been as high as a number two before. There’s a chance though to join Fitzpatrick at four under. There’s a little bit of pizzazz to Matsyama. Most of the Japanese players have something. It’s even for length the stroke back and through. And better the rose, but not perfect. You get pizzazz when you when you shoot what 35 under par in the season opener on the PGA tour. I had a strange year though that started brilliantly and then nothing since for you know a man of his caliber. No top 10s since January on the PJ tour. Quite remarkable. It’s kind of been a year of the uh kind of the 15th to 30th. He’s made about 10 straight cuts. That’s Yama. But you’re right, since then he’s never really uh found the same fireworks. It’s really blowing now. Look at those bushes in the background. Yeah, I think the early tea time might have been a helpful one this morning. 6:40 or something, wasn’t it? The opening shot was fired. field that was extended actually to get a few more players from the top 110 in the race to Dubai rankings into the field such as the strength of the the field this week. Some stars from far away state side coming over to try and win this great championship. Fitzpatrick making his 10th appearance. So much of that is is because of the the place it holds in the world schedule now, you know, for players in the US. It used to be earlier in the season. I think back in May, wasn’t it a few years ago? They made the switch. It’s really opened up Wentworth the opportunity to play here to many. Matthew just readjusting the line he uses to aim. matches the line on the putter to out of the ball and completely forgot about how hard to hit it. That so often is the case, Sam. So often, David, you concentrate so much on the line that Jimmy’s going to see a beautiful little shot here. We’ll be watching on carefully. It’s very aggressive through the wall. That was delightfully played. Very nice indeed. So easy to go right underneath that and only hit it like 3 ft in front of you. Got to make sure you get a good contact. Did you have a feel for those kind of shots, Sam? Something you you looked for in particular? Yeah. Yeah. Generally play it like a bunker shot. You just open the face up and sweep underneath it. You walk him out just like that. Oh, he hit before I could speak. I was going to say slow, but I’m being honest. Didn’t quite make the journey or it’s for birdie online. Oh, good man. Three for at the turn. I like these new putters that the European team are using this week. We got that for about four and six for the Swede. There’s been a lot of discussion about the course setup for next week. Quick greens is what Luke Donald is expecting. Maybe not quite so much rough. Up to Rose for his birdie. [Music] The pace beats it. At least the El Cup’s not next week. Two weeks time. They are going on Monday and Tuesday though to scout the course. Forgive me Sam. No, not at all. They just let me in panic. you know, dim brain, but I think they’re staying in Long Island and most beautiful place in the world. One of the most beautiful place in the world. Great courses. They’re in for a real treat, aren’t they? All those 12, 15 guys trying to prep for the RDER Cup next week together. No pressure, no stress, stories, and fun to be had. That sounds that sounds great. be different the following week when there’s 40,000 round it. But a good save from Tommy. Yeah. Manel uh the Richard Manel. Yes. He and the SAS guy lessons him in in positive thinking and he said to him, “You’re nervous about playing golf.” That’s the very point. It’s amazing how much emphasis we put on it when it’s just a game. Go and play, but as you’re living, you want to play the best you can. If you could relax and just not care, a much easier game. You’ve both played Ryder Cups. What is What does that pressure feel like? Can you Can you describe it? Uh, well, it’s more more pressure on an Nfield ever play, I would say. Well, I think the great thing about golf is if you care about golf, even if you’re a 10 handicapper in the club championship, you care. You feel those feelings, those nerves mostly the first time you it gets it’s too much for you. It’s no different. It’s just more with more people watching. Exactly. Um and so everybody can empathize and and understand what the players might be feeling. I think that’s one of the great beauties of it. I’ve been asked that a few times before. David Fer when he made the team in 91, one of my best ever friends. We had three kids same age and he asked me what is it like now? Tell me. And it’s like having a child. You you cannot explain to someone that doesn’t have a child what it’s like to have a child that bond you have between father and offspring. But the same in the Ryder Cup if you’ve not played it. You can’t describe it. But it’s special and you won back. I can tell you how it feels if we want to go there. Trying to get them to do their homework last night was just mindblowing. Not the homework, just getting them to sit down. Goodness. Anyway, this is the 11th. It’s far four down and then back up the hill. Bunker to carry at 280. That’s where the way they play it mostly nowadays. And we go up the hill. Plays about six or seven up. The second shot catches a few people as out. And the green slopes from back to front. There he is. Gareth Bale retired now. Loves his golf. Time to open your shoulders really now coming in this 11th T. This is always quite an inviting T-shot. It’s a little bit tighter than it used to be with the bunkers of couple down the left, couple up the right, but really it’s quite a big fairway and soft. So give it a rip really. Started right. Did it stay out there? It did bunker 290 down the right and then another one at 315. So there is a gap but we’ll see where that ends up. We go back one to O. Looks like an eight to me. Curved top edge of the iron club normally signifies that. Whichever it was, it was the correct one. That’s a splendid t-shot from 295 over the left bunker. The furthest one. It’s a stretch. I think this cooler atmosphere for JR. So, but it’s a big fairway really. Wind off the left. That’s the issue here for the players coming over their shoulder. Great camera work for our cameramen did a wonderful job up there and a perfect t-shot. Matsuyama 10th hole. Maybe just a little seven. Not so much cover in the top as David said. I hate terrible one a while ago. This is another one. Well, it wasn’t that bad, was it? Awful. Awful. He lost all of six feet of distance there. I don’t know what he’s doing. I mean, he needs to get to the range and just reset for tomorrow. One of his worst. Might end up in a birdie back there from Matsyama up to Horchel at 11. crowd seemed to like it and that’s why said he struggled a little bit for motivation coming back because he could only chip and putt at the start. Took him a good month before he started doing full swings but is happy to be back now. This Patrick wants four under bogey at nine. That’s okay. Three fine shots into 10. Yeah, that’ll do. And they’re all on the right side of the flag as well with looks to come here at the BMW PGA Championship. Our feature group coverage today. [Music] Blemish free out there. There’s Antoine Rosner. It is Vant though that leads at seven under park and he was the first man out today. First tea time, first person on the T- sheet. And he well and truly is leading into the final round, into the first round, I should say. A few days before we get to the final round, there’s Fitzpatrick with the gold star next to his name, too, for Justin Rose. That means they’ve won Rolex Series events in years gone by. They are cut above the raised prize money. We’ve got 9 million US on the line. 8,000 race buy points. So roll through a couple more pages for you. So Mwood let Tommy Fleetwood there level par Billy Horel too. looked as though Tom McKibben was going to make a little bit of a move last week. Kind of edged his way into the top 15 for a little while over at the K Club. Ended up with a a top 20 nonetheless. You can see the slope on the green. Big slope from left to right from the tea. Right to left as we are looking at it. Left to right as we’re looking at it. Sorry. So, this one’s uphill. It should be a little out the left if it’s Patrick. Lovely little par three. I say little, you can play quite long with the wind. You can get up here just today with just a seven or an eight hour. Quite a nice part of the course to watch from as well. A few few trucks to the left behind those galleries. You can watch the 11th T. And the eighth T is not so far away, Seventh Green. So, it is the far end of the course, but it’s a a nice spot to hang around. There used to be a few burger bars and bars in that behind the trees there. I don’t know if they’re still there or if they’re back this year as they don’t stay there all the time. Yeah, we have three birdie parts coming your way here at the 10th. Like we say in this section of the golf course kind of folds back on itself. It really is only a collection of four or five holes that does. Everything else is a kind of a forward march if you will around the west course. It’s going to be Fitzpatrick to play first here. Slow putt. We saw that from uh it was it before I forget. But he didn’t reach because it was slow. Obey I think. So it needs hitting. Nice thing you come back year after year. You know, you kind of know the lines as a golfer, don’t you? You have a fair idea what this is put to do. Yeah. Even the spectators, you know, it’s like watching Augusta. Augusta is one of the most favorite majors to watch just because it’s there every year. And this great championship’s been here for a long time now. We all know it. We all love it. No changes from last year. Fitzpatrick’s on the way. It’s got a good chance. It’s got a good chance. Oh, just ran out of steam at the end. He’ll stay at three under. Good birdie chances come up the next two. Oh, this doesn’t look good. It’s not good, Sam. Heather’s just it’s beautiful but evil. Yeah. 139 ball above his feet. So he’s got to hook this in. He’s had a few smashes in the Heather as a practice. Just a pitch out really. That’s Well, it’s okay. He’s opened up the green for his next shot, but drive to blame. Does it end the bunker? No. Short. Way short in the rough. Oh god. 45 yds short of the green in the rough. I think it’s okay. It’s on the walkway. Touch of right to left in the blood of Ober. He takes another step forward to four in the park. Three behind Veil. and the West Course is to his liking it would seem other than failing to win a couple of years ago. It’s uh it’s all been good news for Ludvig here in Virginia water. So much of that for back to a really ice cold putter on the final round. Everything prior to that was fantastic. Let’s go back to Justin Rose 118 up the hill for Rosie through the back pin. Some of those awkward shots again. similar one that he had at seven earlier, but he’s got to challenge the back of the green here to get it close with the spin on the up slope up onto the correct level. It’s quite a small shelf where the pin is placed and no chance from long at all for the up and down. So well done after that very poor T-shot from Matsayyama. That’s for Birdie. Very nice. Amazing game golf. Really hated his T-shot when he struck it. They used to say then to win little bit closer for Horshaw. 116. [Music] A great opportunity these next couple of holes. That’s an ominous looking cloud up there, Jimmy. Yeah, they’ve been around, but they’re staying away, Sam. We’re told they march. It really is a fantastic time of year if you’re a fan of European golf or perhaps if you’re a fan of the RDER Cup. Welcome to one of the greatest events in golf and one of the greatest in all of sport. There is nothing quite like the first tea at the Ryder Cup. At last, the waiting is over. Unbelievable. What a start. The USA against Europe. Now he’s excited. Going, going, and gone. Right in the incredible. Oh, look at this. Beth Paige Black. I don’t think it’s going to be quiet there somehow. Not in front of New York fans. It’s going to be fantastic. perhaps something like we haven’t seen before. It just keeps getting bigger and bigger. There’s team Europe over on the left with uh the likes of Hovland, Lowry, Fitzpatrick all getting picks. I think Havland had the biggest smile out of everyone. Although Shane’s sometimes hard to be beat. It is a really strong side. And this is who they’re taking on. They’re not bad either. It’s interesting listening to Billy Horchel talking about each team’s chances. He says he thinks the stars really need to step up for team USA. The likes of Sheffller Schoff and Cany hinting that we’re favorites. That’s what I took from that. Don’t tell anybody. Certainly don’t tell Luke. That’s not the It’s not that we want to see it. Jame, nice lie here for Tommy. Yeah, it’s a good lie. He’s walked all the way up to the green. Flewood plenty of green to work with. So just in case how it comes out really going to play for some release. Yeah. What about that? Excellent shot from Fleetwood and judged the amount of roll perfectly. Flighted it exactly as he saw fit. This is the swing to film. No doubt about that. Not the best angle for the chaps in the crowd, but they’ll get a good view of what is one of the simplest swings in the game of golf. Sam, the one was beautiful as well. very upright. Great angles back into the ball. Very much. It’s almost one of those they call it a single plane. They take it back and bring it back down on exactly the same plane. He’s very close to that. Very nice miles up there. That’s the sand wedge from there. Half a ridge to come up here for Horschaw there. Just didn’t fall towards the front of the green as he saw. It’s a funny one that looks left to right all the way, but that actually went right at the hole. Huge galleries around this 11th green near the 12th T right there just behind this green where I’m standing the bar five. All keen to watch a bit of the driver. First things first. Great chance for Justin quite a bit of left to right here. Lovely mid-range putt dispatched. Working hard with Phil Kenya as ever on Monday and Tuesday here, his putting coach. He’s an entourage man. Justin Rose. Always two or three people around him helping him be his very best. driver for Matsyama loves it. No disappointment in that one. That’s a good 20 30 yards behind not having it all his own way today. Tommy Fleetwood, but he’s at even par and this would keep him there. Par five coming up. Easiest hole on the course, the 12th. Nice timing to just hang around at even. Once again, not his best putt. Pace was a little off. Back to the tea. There’s Patrick. Three rippers up here. That’s it. It’s an appealing drive when you’re standing on the tea, especially if you like to draw the ball. It’s just the perfect shape for it. Yeah. And Dan Breeze today as well. And this is how things stand. John Veon has managed to get around the West Course in 64 shots, which is a stellar effort on day one of the BMW PJ Championship. A Rolex Series event, of course. So, a good one to get the victory at. [Music] Rosner, another Frenchman nestled in behind as well. He’s going well. Second page gives us a look at Fitzpatrick Harry Hall who’s played so well in the United States this year, the Cornishman. Nice to have him back on English soil. Thousands coming out to watch these finest players, not only in Europe, but from around the world. Well, this is one of the most famous T-shots in golf, I’d say, with the pine trees in front. It’s framed so well, this hole of this golf course, but this hole in particular, I think this quite an easy par five. But say easy, you got to hit the fairway first. bunker through the fairway at 310. I don’t think you can reach that. Definitely hurting the breeze here at the 12th. But again, just you can open your shoulders and give it a rip. Love it, Rosie. It’s heading towards that ditch, I’m afraid. Might be right of it. He’s had a few of them today, Jimmy, didn’t he? One off the fourth, another one off eight. Yeah, it’s a it’s a safe bad shot, isn’t it? The weak one to the right. Far better than the sort of pulley one. The great lead on one said you can talk to a fan, but a hook won’t listen. Yes, I did prove that theory. Um, Hor’s driven it well. He’s a little bit longer than I thought as well. He’s quite sneaky off the te. Gives it a good hit. Little draw down is lovely. Oh Oh dear. That’s the trees left. They found it. Yeah, that doesn’t always mean it’s great. Many a disappointed golfer. There’s a Marshall around. It’s that famous comment when you’re 10 yards from when Marshall says you’re not going to like it. Now, Tommy, on this 12th T, easily reach, although it is into the wind. There’s a club of wind up there and it’s swirling in these trees. Got to ignore that. Yeah, I think you’re right when you say that to ignore the swirling wind. Get the wind map out and just trust as to where it is. That’s flirting with the ditch but missed it thankfully. Not sure he’ll have reached the bunker either, so maybe not so bad for Fleetwood. No. Are you going works with Mark Blackburn now, English coach based over in America as does Justin Rose as it happened. So nice stable for Mark. Certainly seems to be working nicely for Matthew, who’s been on a great run of form. Pinpoint accurate with that wet shot up the hill. Born above the feet for Matsyama. Might just go down the grip a little, which he does. That’ll flatten the flight out somewhat as well. Come in a little lower than normal. Now that is difficult, David. Jam just carried it too far. Settled down in the rough. You’d be very lucky to keep that on the right level. Probably go 30 ft past. You might not be aware as to how tricky a spot that is. Uki having not been here before from closer range. Ludvik 10 ft or under certainly not there. It’s perhaps the worst shot you’ll see from the suite today. I guess there’s a fear there of of him hitting over the green. That’s is always in the back of your mind when you get a wedge and you hand the pins tucked up on that top level. It’s almost better to a little pitch and run with a pitching wedge but just short and run it up. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Well, this was the birdie try of Matthew Fitzpatrick on the first and he popped it in. Lovely opener for the Englishman. A beautiful iron shot in here. Always difficult pin up the top on seven, but this is just about perfect. [Applause] [Music] Eight can be tricky. And he left his t-shirt a long way back. Thought he might not be able to attack from here to a front pin. Uh but Matthew knew otherwise. There was a splendid second [Applause] and this is on 11 [Music] up in that top shelf. Top tough to get it close but not for Fitzpatrick. No spin on it there. Did well to stop. Excellent run of shots so far today. Well, Horaw had his trouble. We hit the tree when he’s trying to pitch out. He’s still not out in Hold on. One, two, three. He’s still in the rough. Can’t reach. Rose will be laying up on the right hand rough. He just got too far. So sensible for Justin. He’s got a gap. He can knock it down and get a wedge up there. His wedge play has been brilliant today. So, yes, it’s playing a bit of a beast today into this wind right now. Tommy’s all right. Well, that’s got to slow down, hasn’t it? No dramas, Jamie. It’s fine. nicely 15 yds or so short of the ditch that crosses the 12th fairway. Extremely difficult here. He’s played that so well. So well, he’s about as good as they come around the greens on the PGA tour. Very often manages to get up and down six, seven times a day, which is no mean feat. That was played with a plum. Horshaw 246 heavy lie. Well, he’s having a crack at this, but there’s not much in his favor here. There’s trees in the way. That’s the ditch that’s trying to get hit on the ball to start with. He’s got connection, Jeremy, with the wood out there. That was ridiculously good. just got the bunker at the front. Great shot. It looks like Yeah, it was from there. Even though it was his fourth a great shot. Gosh, all sorts of shenanigans that being his fourth. We saw the 4 second from Ludley. This is about a slower putter you will find on the 11th green. That is magnificent. What an effort. Good lie for Fleetwood here and a quite a good angle. 232 lofted wood. Not his ninewood, sevenwood. Oh, he drills it low. Got a turn a bit. Oh, that was a poor poor shot from Fleetwood. Not a difficult third though, but still a poor second. No one better on the greens than Fitzpatrick. New putter. It’s a new improved version on the old one. Surely no mistake making smart progress around the west course at Wentworth. Matthew Fitzpatrick on the first page of the leaderboard. Tom Vale he’ll be delighted with his 64. Rosnner’s going well at five under par. Kubra uh another Frenchman. Must be something in the water. He’s three under bar through 15. Par five to come remember at 17 and 18 played so well at the open of course alongside Sheffler and his best major finish came over there at Royal Port Rush. McKibben. Well, he’s from Northern Ireland. And one under path through eight is a steady old start. It’s heading towards the bunker. Needs to come down quickly. Fine. Trackman showing fine, he says. So that’s good. Sorry, Sam. Just noticed quite a low ball flight. Trackman showing us there. 116 ft. Macrovoy much more like 130. Slightly different portion of sky that the balls travel through the crystal swing all that’s cutting right as well. Will he get as lucky? The shorter the bunker is for its battery. I doubt it. We can’t tell, but they’ve got it. Don’t like the camera’s focusing in on the ditch there. Let’s hope it’s not in there. Well, good layup here from Rosie. He was a bit worried about that cuz it came out like a rocket out of that lie. But fairways are quite soft. So it held up 85 yards. Well, we can get to this pin. It’s in a little bowl at the back. He stiffed it at three from a very similar distance. So he scrambled brilliantly today. Justin needs another one here for a birdie though. This time, not for bar. He’s the best of the over 40s and shots like that. Part of the reason why an excellent pro doesn’t like that one, but he’ll probably pop the putt in and all will be forgiven. A mantyama. You can slice it or hook it and go for a draw. Don’t know too much. There’s a ditch down there. That’s fine. I don’t think he’ll get to the green. Have to be a lay up to where Justin Rose just played from. You would think. I thought he would struggle with this chip on the last green there. That’s stone dead. Now horseshoe. Oh boy. He needs an up and down here. Get down there. Oh yeah. [Music] was in a little gathering position today that pin on 12. We’ll see a few eagles as the day progresses. Most likely not from this group, just Fleetwood still to play his third. And there’s a tidy bunker shot from Billy. Apologies. I’m just talking to Gareth Bale. Just talking about golf and a few things. Apologies. Is he pestering you again? He is pestering me. Short games are telling to go away. Yes, I will. David, go away, Gareth. Well, we got the Chelsea Tommy Chip, which is always a delight for me. Graeme Walker works with him. He watch how he keeps the loft on this club through the ball. Yeah, class. They’re so good out of the rough, aren’t they? These guys, Sam. Oh, absolutely, Jamie. And you can’t even blame it on them getting a lot of practice out of They’re just very good at it. Huge part of the game. Yeah, Roy’s scrambled really well today. He’s got up and down every time he was saying he’s not playing well, but it wasn’t one day, don’t you, in the tournament where it doesn’t, you know, you don’t quite feel right. This could be his day, but he’s still in the red. You got a chance to get further in the red as well. And you always want to hold a P on this screen because you know the T-shot 13 looms and that’s a tough one. Get one in the bank. Should be left to right down the hill here for Rosie. What a year he’s had. Incredible. Another heartbreak at the masters, but very pleasing for someone else. Gareth Bale and Justin they’re putting alongside each other at their local club. They both go about it very diligently. Shy on pace once more. The read was good. the pace. Not so very symmetrical card. Sam, he’ll be bored. However, if he if he matches that up by the end of his day, I’m sure he won’t. How much? Sorry. Yeah, that’s just six for Billy. Yeah, the same power on the No, it’s bogey pop for six. Yeah, I think it’s six. If there is such a thing, Jamie. Yeah. Well, it would feel like a double, wouldn’t it? Making six here. Five is bad enough. So they go to work Finn and Fleetwood using the feet. I always thought the eyes were quite good, but uh the modern way seems to be with the feet. Have you ever tried then? No. If I do that, I’ll stop. If I don’t butt well, I’m shooting 90 right edge of Tommy. just about but picked it out of the middle of the hole. Uh back to level par for his round. There’s a look at the eagles pars and birdies and others sadly for Horchel. Johannes Vman that had the little splash of yellow there. for the eagle. Thought we might have seen a few more, but there’s time yet. Ludvig taking aim. He’s got lucky now, doesn’t he? Great lie. You can certainly get this there. He’s four under part is hang on. Oh, it looks the flight looks just Come on. Stay there now. That’s okay. Not a difficult trip at all from there. Yeah, he’ll be eyeing that one up. Try and chip it in. Joe Scin there just maybe doing some stats just to keep reviewing how far the ball is going and so forth. Lofted metal for Fitzpatrick and turns out to be just the perfect club. [Applause] 13T Flewood 470. This difficult part four dog leg right to left. Got to think this is his two would his mini driver. It is perfect over the tra. Yeah, perfect. As you said, Jerry. down breeze the 13th today. The most of the holes on the run in will be the same direction 13 through 17. Anyway, a layup you would imagine for Matsyama. So it proves. Got to think same club for JR as well. Yep. Yeah. It’s easy to draw, isn’t it? With a bit more loft on it than the driver. Oh, he went to that one. It’s a perfect line top of the hill. Might have to draw that one around the trees. Track band showing us 289 yards of carry with two wood. So he goes a mighty distance still. Yeah, it’s easy to hit the fairway with that club, but maybe not quite enough yardage for Justin. We’ll see cuz the flag’s on the left here. Very tight to the left hand side. They’ll be aware of that with with their club selection off the tea. Right. Horchel six holes. He can, as you say, David, down the wind now. We can maybe be start thinking birdie again. That’s a good T- shot. Yeah, just missed the fairway, but it’s on the correct side. So, welcome return to golf for Billy Haw. He’ll feel like home here at Wentworth. If you want to laugh, Sam, I’ve never had the yips other than for one thing, and it’s the word Wentworth. I keep putting a little slightly hard tea in instead of a soft tea, and I struggle with it every time. Not sure why I told you that live on television, but there you go. I couldn’t even understand what you’re saying when you say Wenworth. I know exactly when it happened as well during an interview with Tim Barta a few years ago. Anyway, we move on. Matsyama. Or do we? Perfect layup. Just 84 yards. Very accessible pin. You can with this club. It’ll be dancing around the hole. You would think a bit left. It will feed a little right to left. Left to right. There you go. It’s like Confessions by David How. Yeah. Let’s Let’s not go down that rabbit hole. I’m going to go for a break. Good to have you uh with us along the way on the back nine. If you scan that QR code, you can go to a survey. give us your thoughts on the back n thus far. Maybe what you want to see more or less of. We’ll do our best to oblige. To be fair, it’s always fantastic. The uh the nine events strung together was brilliant last year. Some really good stories. Belly in a playoff over Lawrence and Rory Hadalgo over John Ram in a playoff in the mountains of Madrid. Let’s reach for some kind of wedge here. You don’t always have to around this layout. It’ll probably be lie dependent for him. That’s not too difficult from here for off the back foot. Just nudge it forward. Probably pitch on the fringe and let it release up to the hole. See how far back is. Make sure he gets the contact first. Delightful. Should be another birdie for him. Get him to five under. Be the sixth of his day so far. That did start with a bogey and it’s been good since then. Few are immune to the opening hole here. Usually have about six time the amounts of bogeies than we do birdies. Back there at one, but this is up ahead at 13. By the numbers, it should be Fleetwood first. Just by a yard. Yeah, it’s Tommy to go first. All three players in good shape, including Justin. He got to flirt the trees, but it won’t be a problem. 165 for Fleewood. And where he is to the green, it’s up five, but he does have the wind behind a bit. They probably cancelled each other out. So I think I play the yardage, which is a smooth eight. Nine’s a real press. He’d be tempted though with the wind, knock a nine up high, but it always plays a bit further this second shot to 13. He knows that. That’s what they’re talking about. They’ve been looking up a lot, haven’t they, to the clouds. Got to stick with that windm. Yeah. Is Rosie okay or is he going to maneuver it? Rosy’s all right. I mean, just go straight over the top. Really? Told me. Now, what’s the I think it’s an eight he’s got here. You see the follow through truncated to this left pin. Just the thing is he’s got to carry that front bunker guarding the left side of the screen. This club takes it out [Music] to be on it. Just come up a little light with a good line with just half a club out or just hit it a bit harder. That magnificent second from Pllewood Fitzpatrick. Oh, shame. That was eagle. 164 for Horschaw. Few yards closer than Tommy. He has gone with nine. sensible. [Applause] Yeah. And a commercial result on the dance floor. And 158 for Justin on the left hand side. He’s got to skirt the trees, but he’ll go over those or down just slightly to the right of them. Big nine for Justin. might be a little late, but I think with the height I’m thinking he’s going to smash the nine here. Trying to draw it in. Looks like it’s stuck out to the right a bit. A bit light with the club as well. Might have been a bit of a soft eight. Matthew needs to get to five under. Lovely stroll. Beautiful putt. Five on the par. Three behind the leader. Van. I think he quite likes the West Course. Might as well. He’s seeing it for the first time with a scorecard in hand. The 2021 Masters Champion. That crowd still streaming in. It’s a birdie. So Oberg joins Matsyama and Fitzpatrick at five under pile. Feature groups are impressing so far this morning. Still plenty more action to come here from round one of the BMW PGA Championship. Not to mention the main coverage as well feature Rory Maroy and John Ram amongst others. So it’s a fast pace being set so far out of Tom Von given he had six birdies in his last seven holes for that 64 that had two bogeies in it as well. You got got to be quick out of the gates here in the Rolex Series. Week three of five on that front. There’s Justin Rose. He’s taken two Rolex Series events in years gone by. He’s a two under. Look at that. We are rolling through the red here in the opening round from Wentworth. But it is Tom Bayant for now. Can anyone catch him? As we head towards the afternoon here of the BMW PGA Championship. History tells us over the years here that that history here counts as well. So, a number of experienced players on the front page of the leaderboard, including this man who’s in the top three, Fitzpatrick. Tot 13. Watching it anxiously. No need absolutely just fine. Maybe a touch on the left hand side for the left pen. We have to draw it around. That’s a look from behind the green. Well, Rose putting for birdie up the hill here at 13. Bit of right to left for him. He’s This has been a pros round here for Rosie cuz he’s not played his best by his own admission to me a little bit earlier in the round, but he could still shoot three or four under, you know, round here. Maybe maybe less. Couple of parfs coming up. which is just a bit a little bit right to left, but more about the speed on this one. That’s a good approach, but really only try two part that you’d love to hold it, but you’d be delighted with two pots. Back to Matsuyama. He loves that one. Great crack of the ball. That two just be okay. Ball’s below his feet, which means it’s difficult to draw it. I may not be able to go straight at the flag. 13th green bathed in sunlight. This is a popular spot. this in this little bowl this screen. Big crowds always around the screen and I’m looking up 14. I’m on the 14th T looking up and the grand sand’s full big area to the left hand side. That’s packed. It’s absolutely fantastic. What a tournament this is. The BMW PJ and Horaw chance to get into the red again. The way he putts, one of the best long putters in world golf. I know he’s had some time off, but this wouldn’t surprise me. swings off the right. Unlucky there. Jamie was right. That normally does swing quite a bit right to left. Just hung out there for him. Settled the ship after the Bogi on the par five 12th interesting part here Sammy I think it’s left to right yeah well that you can see so from here we can see how high the green is to the left of the hole yeah red’s straight but I saw um Justin’s part drift right so he’s got to keep it outside the hole here it right now did [Applause] Just a part and off he goes to prepare for the 14th of par three coming next. An iconic part of this golf course. Good little spots to watch around 13. You can turn around. You can see the tea right behind uh this green out of 14. So we jump back to Oberg here. This is a horror lie. You can see it’s really thick there. Long way back to get probably have to play to the right half of the green. Two pop from more. I agree. Left side as we look. Splitting that tree that tree trunk in the pinion. Yeah, cuz I don’t like the seven. Yeah, I like that. If it were to come out a little fine. Yeah. You heard him say, I don’t like the six. Not sure whether he’s gone to the five or the seven. Looks like the seven. A big hit from this line. Yeah, clubbing back. It was always going to need to pop out of that line. Hustle a touch. Just lands into the up slope short of this green. There’s plenty of those around the west course. Not many of the front edges release. Go up to 14. Nice little set of calculate here. Oh yes, there is lots. There’s lots on the line as well, isn’t there, Spency? Yeah, that car is looking lovely, isn’t it? That BMW RX3 bought by one of those. I think it was just released. So hot off the press for us here last week. 177, but it’s up 10, but it’s straight down the win. Flags behind the green on top of the grand stand tell you that it’s a tricky little club. I’m told it’s seven or eight most of the players hitting. It’s a big eight though up that hill. Yeah, dead right Jeremy and didn’t make it over the back of the screen is never easy. Can’t sign anything from down on the tea. So you walk up and discover where you went. Back to 13. Second on the way. Nearly for Matsyama. Me too. A bit light. Maybe they don’t really. It’s quite a bit uphill to that green from where they are. I would think it’s a seven for Justin. It’s a 177, but the minimum is 166 over the bunker short of the screen. Short is not an option, mind you. Long’s not very good either. Just got to hit a shot here at 14. It’s as simple as that. Speaking of, right on queue there. What a shot from Justin Rose. If there’d been no rain, that may have just rolled up and popped into the hole. If if if he’s been in a little bit of a holding pattern, hasn’t he? Dustin Rose, maybe that’ll change there. in there. Five holes left for him to play. Six ahead for Fitzpatrick. Just under 140 ahead of him. It’s not plain sailing from here. You can see how far right he’s aiming. He really does have to hit a hook on this. There’s the trees up in the left side of your screen. That’s what he’s got to come round. Nice release through the ball. Turning over. Is it enough? He’s gone too much. That’s up on top of the bank on the left there. I turned it too much. I didn’t turned it too much. Hated the shot. Up ahead. Horseshoe. That’ll be a quick one just up on the wrong level. Yeah. So, a couple of birdie opportunities coming. Some more makeable than others there at the 14th at Wentworth. Some solid rounds out from the early groups today. That of Jong Wong Co, David Maluzi, Aaron Cochril. They were all in with their 68’s enjoying lunch somewhere. Fought better than that though as Tom Vayant who leads here at the moment at the BMW PGA Championship. Be it with the the wind picking up a touch in uh certain parts of the golf course. It’s kind of the way it goes around the West Course. Don’t feel it everywhere all at once. 800 P will be very hard to catch this afternoon. Brandon Stone just in the red in the top 30 with one of those precious gold stars. The Rolex Series events. Usually a large amount of points and money come along with these, not to mention the prestige. as the pressure has always turned up in the five Rolex series events of the season. Tommy Fleetwood knows all about it and he’s level par on the round. Two of each as he walks up the 14th at the moment. Look back to 13 grain. Oberg release all the way. Not quite. No, he’s left himself a tough one for his bar. T-shot paying the price now up ahead. Tricky one down here. Yeah, it’s pretty quick, is it? Sam, once it gets over the ridge, this one for sure. Quite a bit left to right as well. When it gets over there, that’s a mystery. And the shadows just encroaching over this little section of the green the pin is today. This little kind of back right third if you will. It’s always a good buzz there at the BMW PGAs in there. Jamie enjoying yourself out there. Love it watching these players on this great course. Uh yes, it’s a delight, a pleasure, Ali. Genuinely, I always struggle around here. It was a long old golf course back in the day, but these guys make it look easy to be honest. This hole especially. I hate this hole, but these guys 78 iron. It’s unbelievable. We’re in fives. Fleetwood. Now get it to the hole, Tommy. Bit left to right. That was a poor read. Yeah. Started about right and stayed out there. [Applause] Wonder if it’s Patrick with this unique chipping action. Left hand below right. Started as a PR practice thing and he liked it so much he stuck with it. And that is why Oh, almost. Almost an excellent save from Fitz battery who will stay five under. Well, what a T-shot from the US Open and Olympic champion. Let’s not forget 2016. You were there for that, weren’t you, Jamie? I was there. You privileged to be with him. Yeah. Team manager for GB. Well, I made his coffee to be fair. Apparently quite well. Fluffed his pillow. This is just inside. Right. Give an outside or more pace. Clear one from Justin. Shame. Now you missed that. And you’ve got the the 15th coming next as well, which isn’t exactly a welcome gift. Back to 13. Matsyama about 30 ft or so. [Applause] Just cruising, isn’t he? Nice one from Horell. Just going off the boil a little bit in the last half hour. Daming get some adrenaline through the last five. He spoke about managing his expectations, kind of coming back to a place where he’s tasted victory twice before, but also off the injury. He said, “If I have my best golf over 72 holes, I can be a chance.” But he’s really not putting too much pressure on himself for the rest of the year. That’ll work though for Oberg there. Tuesdays at five. Sorry, Alison. Yeah, that was a good save after being uh a little out of position down the right hand side off the tea in that rough choices to be made. At least they paid off that time round. There he is alongside Martin Kubra who has just gone birdie birdie at 16 and 17 headed down the last at the moment. So he might take another step upwards. We’ll see down the 18th of par five that still awaits all of our feature groups this morning. Now into the afternoon Viva France first, second and third Frenchman. Very nice. French Fleetwood on the 15th. 490 won’t be the driver. Down the wind. Straight down the wind. Looks like a beauty. Perfect shot. Used to be a couple of bunkers down the left here. It’s now just fair of you. Give me a better angle into the flag from the left side. No matter where the flag is. And we got a silver medal in Tommy Fleetwood. And you were there Anderson in France. And that was some of the best golf I think I’ve ever seen. Oh, it was unbelievable, wasn’t it? Oh, it was just incredible. Yeah. Sheffller took gold. Matsyama there as well. I don’t know how he did it though, Sheffller. I don’t know how he did it. Great stuff. Another favorite comp for you, Jamie. Yeah, I know. I’ve got to get one. Can I have yours, Sam? Yes. Probably more used to you than me, but no. I don’t know. I’ve seen you swing. You You’re on the comeback. Lovely wind for this although down the wind. Oh, he’s leaked it though. There’s a ditch over there. He’s fine. Same shot again. He’ll get it on the green. It’s Patrick first on the tea at 14. Five under, three behind. Positioning herself in an excellent position. Oh, Sham needed another club there. It didn’t get the connection or it was just an upper club out. Now Horell on 15. Used to be a couple of bunkers down the left at 15. Taken taken those out, but they put a ditch penalty area down the right hand side. Horse was aiming down the left. Ah, he loves it. Still remember Danny Willlet’s shot from the trees. One of the best I’ve ever seen. He had to bend it around about eight trunks. Chased it up to about 20 ft if not less. Meanwhile, back to 14. So me many memories around this golf course. Oh, so many. Oh, a bit late too. Luke Donald and uh Westwood playing for number one in the world up the last in the playoff was pretty special. Luke Donald went to number one when Westwood screwed it back into the water. Luke Donald one of the few that have managed to go back to back here at Wentworth. Did so in 2011 2012. And Matsyama starting to uh he’s writing his own history as we speak here for the first time. Rory, you’re going to have to wait a bit for Rory to put it in the home. He’s not playing till this afternoon. But a beauty from Matsuyama. In the early days here, Allison, they had a a car for the course record. I think it was a Triumph Spitfire maybe. And Nick Job came to the last green with a 70ft putt. And he had to tw and he didn’t. Oh, he hauled it. So he got the car. Good listening, Nick. I hope you’re well. Well, if you are just uh sitting down with us as we come to quarter past 12 or so local time here, let’s uh roll back the day for you. And Matt Fitzpatrick at one. This is Oberg at five. Perfect read here. I thought it was going to go left, but it didn’t. And straight in. [Applause] And we saw Fitzpatrick at one. made a birdie at four this at seven though. Maybe the best iron shot of his day so far. Yes, he didn’t have to do much after this shot for his birdie. Almost made it [Music] in the right rough front pin. Thought he had no shot, but what a beauty. So good from out of position there and rewarded handsomely with his third birdie of the day. It’s at 10 for Oberg. He’s never going anywhere else. Fitzpatrick. He’s so good from 150 yards in. He’s good everywhere, but very special from that distance. That was another beautiful short iron. [Music] And there was more to come albe it this time with a fairway medal at 12 the par five. Yeah. 7 which is making famous he was off that for eagle didn’t quite convert. So of our six players in our feature groups, we have all three in the one group. Game 13, five underpar. So collective 15. It’s been a slightly different tale for game 12 where we head now for Fleetwood. Three wonderful T-shots down here at 15. He will not play easier than this all week. This hole straight down the wind. Sun’s out. preferred lies all on the fairway and the pin is as easy as you’re going to get on this 15th this week. Now then Fleetwood just in case you’re getting the right club 182 is 873 down the wind. There’s a bit more wind than that. So he’s going to have to take something off an eight. I don’t think nine gets it. Sets up perfectly for a little draw. Started about 8 10 ft right at the pin. Watching it. Is it right? Oh, a little shy. Jerry was right as usual. It’s always dangerous throwing terms like that around phrases. Jamie was right as usual. Go back to 14. That’s actually Fitzpatrick. And we know it was great from down there in the sand. Yep. There he is. I’m just guessing, Sam, by the way. It’s just a guess. Educated mind, but playing with you. You see, I learned a lot. Rose is in between as well. You know, he’s been chatting to Fuch a long time. 174 again. Eight. It’s probably too much, but can he sneak a nine there if he will know with his swing whether he’s hitting nine or not? Now the wind picks up behind him. If he’s got a nine, that’ll encourage him. That was pretty brilliant shot. Perfect club Ben. Tricky P. It’s probably got three four inch swing off the right that one and quick. He’ll know that he could get a good few skins at 15. Justin Rose might back to 14 and Obert. Who would love it again? Just a wedge for Horchel. Staring straight down it spin. Oh my goodness. Hasn’t been far off today, but just not quite dialed naturally. Hasn’t had a score card in his hand like this for 5 months. So we shot Shaw. So old Brooks chipped to here. That’s for Park. Oh, he’s pulled it. Oh, he fell in. Oh, that’s nice. Stays at 500. Three behind. All right, from just past it quickly down the hill for Matsyama for his birdie to join Rosner at minus 6. This must have had a little look at the car on the way past. Did it hole in one hole directly behind the pin for Hudki? Kind of the one-stop drop. That lovely little bounce of the putter just to get rid of any tension and get the putter moving as he draws it back. Quite the card of the beautiful bunker shot. It’s just a tap in right half. There you go. I’m going to get one of those putters. I’ve just decided treat myself. Looks like it works. Yeah. Well, most things do in Matthew’s hands, but you weren’t too bad with the flat stick. So, we got a 15 green flat stick out for Billy Horschel. Jamie have crept in there. Had a little look around. Oh yeah, I better look. This is a horrible park for Horseshoe. I’ve got to be honest with you. Um I I just wonder in a couple of weeks whether Mrs. Rose and Flewood might be first up at Beth Paige Black. I thought you said Mrs. I thought you said Mrs. Rose and I thought I miss Kate’s a great player but I’m not sure she’s right a cup level. Well, I’m just throwing it out there. Did you say Mess Rose? Is that what you said? one of your most experienced players in Justin and FedEx champion in Tommy. I I think about it. I thought Bob McIntyre and Rose were a magnificent pairing at the last one. Maybe them. I think Rose did an incredible job with the young rookie Bob who’s turned into superstar. Yes. Forom’s first, isn’t it? I I forgot about that. We don’t know that yet, do we? Do we not? No. It’s the captain’s choice. Anyway, back to this one. Horawial. This is quite a lot left to right. Quick down by the hole. Go on. Keep going. Keep breaking. Keep breaking. [Applause] I’ll finish. Matsyama 15 driver straightaway hole ditch up the right. Oh well, he didn’t like it on 10 and he nearly hold it. So, let’s give this time. Oh, no. He won’t like that one. That’s either right of the ditch, which is worse than in the ditch cuz there’s some evil stuff in there. Adding to the storied history of that 15th hole. S. There’s been a few catastrophes over the years. Not that it will pan out that way for a decki, but mansions right and left pens areas all sorts down the 15th. Always one of the most intimidating drives on the course. Now, Tommy chances the fringes are beautiful. They’re just like the greens themselves really. But we know it’s right to left. That’s okay. Just dep chances however coming in 16 17 18 down breeze. Three metal for Fitzy. Holes has been changed quite a bit over the years. I’ve tried bunkers down the left. They’ve taken them away. And that one down the left half is nicely placed. Perfect spot. Well, uh, the golfing gods always do this, don’t they? He’s got the same part he had on the last. So, swinger right to left. And that was low. This is, mind you, this is downhill a little bit more. But, uh, yeah, they said, go on, have another go. Just got to trust it. Just hit it down your line. That’s all you can do when you hit your line. Try and match it here with the right pace for Birdie to get to three under path for Justin Rose. And that’s exactly what he does. He’s just outside the top 10 and he’s just finding his stride. And that sets you up very nicely. You have 68 67 in your mind at that stage now. Anxious a little there. No, it’s fine. I always like to wait until I’m on the 17th fairway in one before I start thinking about good scores. I’m talking about tough drives. Yeah. Two dog leg par fives to finish. One round to the left, one round to the right. That is iconic, the 18th. And it awaits our feature group still here at Wentworth. [Music] Nice to see Matt Wallace going well. Three under. Aaron Ry, two disappointed people not getting into the Rider Cup. I thought both of them had a chance, but I think we’ve got the strongest team. Yeah, I think uh after impressing earlier this season at the team cup, Baron Ry was on uh that side where GB and I take on continental Europe and uh yeah, I feel like that was a big week for him. Impressed a lot of the captains, but just didn’t quite have the form throughout the the rest of the season. [Music] Got the range on the left and really three stunning golf courses here. What a place. What? And what has drones done for our viewing pictures? Just magnificent, isn’t it? The different shots you can now get from a drone. I’ve bought the kids two drones and I’ve lost them both. First go, 100% record. Did you find the drones? No, they’re them in Wbridge somewhere. They’re nowhere. Never to be seen again. You shouldn’t be let out, Howler. You’re You’re a menace. Okay. 16. They used to hit driver down here. Torrent hit driver every time down here. Yeah. And then provisional. It’s an iron for for Rosie down the wind. Hit the fairway. Bunkers up the right. Yeah. Again here. The bunkers down the left that used to catch a lot of balls. It’s actually saved me into the trees of the hazard. [Applause] Nicely placed for Rose Fairway. Speaking of nicely placed, Fitz Patrick in the perfect spot for this pin. Five under. Can he get to six? Still too far. Five to come. Eight under leading. Oh, this is good. Release, release, release. Come on. Wonderful shot from Steel. It’s about a three-hour drive, isn’t it? To the north of here, Sheffield, where Matt Fitzpatrick hails from and friends and family out there. Wonderful angle for Ligarette. That’s the short iron. No more than nine. Find the front portion of this green. 30 chance coming. Now that’s a poor one from old Bergie. They’ve been wanting that bit inside Patrick’s ball. She has come up a bit light. extricated himself from trouble with his second Hideki. So, sand wedge of some kind here at a mid wedge yet to drop a shot today. In danger of doing so here. Apologies for the break up. Looked good for Matsyama. I’m sure a lot of people from back in Japan are tuning in right in prime time for them. About 8:30 p.m. local time in Tokyo at the moment and they’re watching Matsyama try his best to chase down Tom Vayon who’s two shots ahead of he and Antoine Rosner at 6 under park. [Music] Have a good chance of doing exactly that given the uh the opportunity in the last 45 minutes on this golf course. Tell you what, that group’s going on nicely, isn’t it? Out of Oberg, Fitzpatrick as well. Combined 16 underpar now. Just keep racking up the red out there today. It’s great to see so much uh emotion flooding uh out of Matt Wallace. We need to see more of that golf. He wears his heart on his sleeve up in the mountains of Kron where he really felt like he needed to win the Omega European Masters to have a chance for the Ryder Cup for the second time running. Yeah, he gave it a great effort. [Music] Erin Chakara, a winner in India. He’s inside the uh top 20 as well. But why don’t we uh take a look back? It was a talent fulfilled last week on the Hotel Planner tour as Hugo Towns End broke through and he did so putting on a masterclass in Poland. [Music] [Applause] [Music] I think it would just free me up more knowing that, you know, I’ve I’ve I’ve done it now. I’ve won here. I can say that I’ve won. And just showing up to every week knowing that I mean I can compete. So I think just it would free me up and I mean obviously it’s golf anything can happen but uh I mean I’m just happy to win. Plays under the Swedish flag of course is the uh the son of uh Ryder Cup player Peter Towns end. We have another Towns Enzand on tour next year. He jumps up all the way into 10th on the Road to Mayora rankings with that twoshot victory in the GAC Rosa challenge tour event there. His brother was a film star too, Stewart. All right, back to the action here at Wentworth with Tommy Fleetwood. Yeah, Fleetwood, middle of the fairway, just over the 150 mark, but it’s only a wedge down the wind. It’s always difficult to get the ball pin higher at 16. Always was, always will be. You just can’t see the the green. It’s a little bit of dead ground. So, invariably they come up a bit short here, which is the safer play because long or left are no go zones. And judging this wind is difficult now. It’s swirling. It’s gusty. Beautiful day. Don’t forget, but uh yeah, the wind is the tricky factor here. So, wait for Tommy. Pins tight left as well. I expect this to be right a bit. There’s only 9 ft to play with left of it. Just starting on a good line [Music] right to the heart of it. We roll back one to 15. A putter came out early for no doubt as to his intentions. [Applause] A horse 16th fairway on 46 bin back left. Well, 20 on back east left. Very accessible. We’re going straight at this. [Music] He’s had a poor run. He can get it back in the next three holes. Make a couple of bird. He shoot 71. He’s just tugged it a bit left. Not too far away, but he’s chipping. I’ll be curious if the the rough line kind of impinges the uh back swing at all. That’s Yama. That will check as to whether that’s the third or fourth shot. To my mind, that would was for par having come out of the trees. Yes. So perhaps the first blemish for Hideki. Perfect spot for Rose as well. Me too. We’re going straight at this one. confirm that was a 54 the Japanese player almost lose the pin, can’t you? with the uh grand stand behind. It’s not far from the left edge of it really. He’ll be getting a line from Tommy Fleetwood. Now Fitzpatrick’s applaud is to the our superiors who picked the feature group. This is the best group on the course. 17 under between the two of them. Six under for Patrick now. Yeah. So a little uh jostling done in that game with Matsyama dropping the shot for the first time today. His first bogey ever at Wentworth Fitzpatrick making. So two shot swing between the two. That was a sneaky one. Such an incredible venue and a great walk around it as well. Uh Fitzpatrick tease off here at 16. Short little path. I’m going to tell you about the course record award presented by Nexo. So once a course record is achieved and held to the conclusion of the tournament, player will get $10,000, but it is preferred lies today. Just keeps jackpotting if no one does it. The last person to get it was Marco Penge in Denmark. So we’ve been racking up since then. Should be $40,000. Uh if someone could do it out there today, they might not be afforded the chance. Hopefully we play the ball down at some stage. Did it all four rounds up last week at the K club. It’s a wonderful incentive. I like that. Yeah. Price for the course record. It’s nice. It’s a great honor to get course record. Just an iron for so elegant isn’t it dude? It is just on that. It is a nice challenge or something to have the course record. It’s it’s a simple goal. What’s the lowest anyone’s ever shot around here? I’m going to try and beat it. You’d have to be 11 under par to do it as well. It was Robert Carlson back in 2010. The third round 62 for him and he thought he’d missed the cut the night before and was at the airport. True story. Came out Saturday morning. Course record. Bet you he’s glad he didn’t get on the plane. All right, down to 16. Fleetwood here, Jamie. Yeah, for the birdie from a good spot actually, Tommy. Just released on him nicely that second shot. So, putting up the green. He’s not filled the up today. He’s due one to be honest. So, put him in the red. [Applause] It’s kind of more of the same for Fleetwood. So, it will be just the par level. Back to the T. Matsyama who stood alongside Tommy on the podium in Paris. same line for Dustin. He’s had a great read and Tommy just drifted right at the hole. It’s gusting a bit, isn’t it, now? So, you might have to take that into account. It’s quite strong. this breeze. Is it about a club, Jamie? More or less? Definitely. Uh maybe a bit more now, but uh just see in the back of your mind on the greens a little bit if it loses speed, but he’s had a great read as I said, Rosie. Perfect pot from Justin Rose. He gets the five under. Four under. Just testing for those playing along at home. Two in a row. Nice time to find them as well with 17 and 18 coming next. Poured that one in. Beautifully done. So he’s into the top six. Going to get the strike on it out this uh semihaw. And there’s quite a bit of break as well on this part for the birdie. Sometimes hard to hit them high enough when they break from right to left on that side of the green because most greens slope from back to front. But not the case on the 16th here at Wentworth. We will be seeing that man Rory Maroy the world number two in our feature groups tomorrow. So we hope you join us for that. Perhaps you joined us last week in Ireland. It was a wild run on the way home at the K Club, but a good one for Maroy. [Music] Just so lucky that I get to do this. I get to do this in front of these people. Um the support has been absolutely amazing all week and um you know I thought uh you know I thought it was going to be a nice homecoming obviously coming home with a green jacket and all that but uh this has been absolutely incredible. This has exceeded all of my expectations and um just so so happy I could play play the way I did um this week for all of them and and get the win. Would you believe it? Maroy Eagles the last and draws up alongside Lagrin. Maroy provides the X factor at the K Club. What a tournament. His 20th DP World Tour victory. Take a bow. Rory Maroy. To come home and and win my national open. Um, that’s a, you know, no matter what happens for the rest of the year, that’s a that’s a pretty cool year. Like 2025 is going to go down as um, you know, one of the one of the best, if not the best in my career. And but, you know, as I said, we’re not finished yet. I’ve got a big week next week at Wentworth. Uh, and then obviously every everyone’s looking forward to the RDER Cup. But, um, I’m just so happy my game’s in good shape. I feel like I’m playing well. Um, you know, and that that excites me for for what’s coming up. Yeah, without question one of the magical moments of what is a magical career, Grand Slam career. Now, uh eagled his 72nd hold to get into the playoff over Yokam Lagrant and then had 10,000 people near just cheering for him. Nearly broke the mic. Sam, their reaction. Yeah, it was magnificent. Great crowds there. So many children there watching. Imagine waking up Michael Roy in the morning and he’s got that swing to go and play golf with every day. Yeah. Well, it’s a lifetime of work to produce that swing. Well, mind you saying that, maybe 10 years cuz he was pretty good when he was 20 years old. So, he’s done a very good job of not losing it since then. He was pretty good when he was 14. Came and stayed with me for a week and played with my son every day. I think he was 32 under power for the week. And your son, he was a good player. He is. Yes. He didn’t quite reach reach the heights of Mroy, but he loves his game. Loves his golf. The rain. Ah, not what we want. That side. There’s a It’s near on a squall. It is absolutely hammering it down outside our our commentary box. It’s a big property, so it’s only just reached them. Jamie Spence, I seem to recall, left his umbrella in his car, which we might touch on more. That’s made you smile, hasn’t it? Actually made all of us smile cuz the broly that Allison offered you. I’m sitting looking at it is still here. Find a tree to duck under, Jamie. Still sunny outside, but there is a lot of rain coming down right now. And that is how it stands as uh Mother Nature pops up 12:45 or so local time. Still a two-shot advantage to Tom Vayant who will have done all his media duties, had some lunch. There’s not much to fix, I’d imagine, after birding six of his last seven holes on the way in. So, uh, back to the rental perhaps. There is Justin Rose who’s just gone back to back birdies at 15 and 16. [Music] He’s done well to stay patient out there today, Howa, cuz it you know Justin Rose is kind of in a little bit of a a holding pattern for some time. Indeed. Yeah, it’s been a a patient day. But Wentworth does give you chances at the end. He managed to where find one on 11. Didn’t By 12 somewhat frustratingly for him and he’s found them at 1516 and he has the par fives to come. It’s been a a very professional round of golf as ever from Rose. Not at his best and he’s still four under par. Yeah. And he’s coming into [Music] this week into the RDER Cup with form after taking the FedEx St. Jude, the first of three events on the playoffs over in the PGA Tour. It’s great to have uh so many players coming over as well to see all that the BMW PGA has to offer, which is plenty once you get through the gates. They take such good care of the players these days as well. Oh, it’s fine dining in the players this week. There’s a couple of gyms on offer if not three. Lots of local hotels are one of a nice part of the world just outside of London, of course. And it’s a historic golf course. It’s, you know, some of the greats have played here. Palmer, Nicholas Blair, Torrance, they’ve all been read here many a time. [Music] Albert Samne and Ben Hogan. There you go. Playing the Canada Cup here, which became the World Cup. That was pretty special, I would imagine. Sebie had his great moments. Of course, seeing bit of that on social media. And he will never forget I’m turning around and say, “Hey, can you keep still? I know you’re nervous. I am nervous, too.” Yes. Yeah. 17th February. Never to be forgotten as he won’t be. Yes. Charm and charisma personified as Devisos. [Music] A couple more Ryder Cup players on that page of the lead. There’s plenty here. Bert Feastberger from Whistling Straits. It was Rome for Nikolai Hoyard who without question will be there not to mention Poric Harrington. He’ll be there I’m sure on site in New York like Rasmus was watching him become a rookie two years ago. Part of the advantage really for for Raasmus you got to drive around uh Thomas Bjorn that week and get a real feel for the uh the experience that awaits albeit slightly different on an away game. Well, you can’t have everything, can you? Driving Thomas around for a week. I just one of the greats of the European tour. He won last week as well on the Champions Tour. Good on you, Thomas. Well done. Playoff, I believe. 35 footer in the playoff. Yeah. Amazing. He’s been a starboard of this tour for for many years. Former chairman of the players committee of course never won this great championship. I pretty sure right in saying however just again goes to show it’s not an easy one to win. Says the former winner. I wasn’t leading you there but I know that you mention it. It’s wonderful. Very proud of it. Little shy for Patrick. It’s one thing to win it how. As much as we we hate to give you credit, it’s another thing to win it by five, he’s just he’s just sitting here, Jamie, lapping all of this up, all this praise. Oh, I know. Sickening. 610. Not a tea to be waiting on. They’ve been on there for 10 minutes. Rose wind does help him off the right. Oh, this is beautiful. At least he missed the squall, Tammy. Yeah, that’s a good point. And so did I. Hiding under a tree. Good man. That’s a perfect drive right in the middle of the fairway. Great angle in. What a drive from Justin Rose. Yeah, the severity of the rain would it would have taken a good probably 10 15 yards or so off the drive. It was really chucking it down. Back to Matsiyama. 16 grain 17. So close to each other. Frighten your T-shot. Don’t care who you are. Suits Tommy though, doesn’t it? With his draw. He can aim it down the right, let it go. But if you just quit on it a bit, it’s easy to go left. Full commitment required here from Fleetwood. It’s tight, but I think it’s just okay. No, it’s not. Came out though. Oh, the luck of the Irish from an Englishman. Goodness me. That’s a Well, what a great break. Hardest shot in golf is the third one off the 17th T. Well, you see forward about 70 yards. That was where the tea was. That’s how hard it is now. It was a tough drive then. Yeah. Now Horchel finding his way back into tournament golf. I think he’s done all right. Actually, he’s some good parts that haven’t gone in. He could have been a few better. No doubt. This has got to be down the right surely after that. The Trackman showing us at this uh start line further down the right withdraw. It’s an ideal shot from Horchel. Berg is back there. Sorry about that little glitch. It’s not always an easy spot for a signal. All the trees around. We are hearing that Oberg did make his path back there. [Music] It was for Bertie actually, wasn’t it? But he did hold it. So he will be up to six under par when that birdie drops alongside Rosna and Fitzpatrick. Just keep moving forward. That trio that’s Yama getting left behind all the way back at five under par share of fifth. It’s the young Finn who many in Finland saw coming. Oliver Lindell. He’s at three under through nine. Certainly one to watch from the next generation coming through. Had an eagle out there as well. That came at fourth. No surprise there. Currently uh the second easiest hole in the golf course, averaging 4.36 the fourth. Amazing. Easiest is actually the 12th today despite yielding more eagles uh down the fourth. Par five is absolutely critical. They’re still to come for our feature groups. Albe it one of uh one of those halfway down it now. Sean Fleetwood’s very happy with where he’s ended up. And if you’re enjoying it, we may have macaroy tomorrow morning. So get up early, get it on. Yeah, we should be uh on air the same time tomorrow. 8:30 local time. So about 4 and 1/2 hours uh earlier than wherever it is now, wherever you’re joining us around the world. If that makes sense. Look at your clocks. [Music] Hope to have you around for round two. You’re in the feature groups in the Rolex series. [Music] There’s Alex Fitzpatrick. Both brothers in the field this week. Two birdies and a bogey for him thus far. [Music] Wonder if he’ll go to the Ryder Cup. Alex support his brother. They will do. Maybe he’ll be a buggy driver. Jamie, nice and dry for you know you there. Yeah, it’s lovely. Yeah. Yeah. Just that little school came through. They did say it was going to come over about 3:00, didn’t they? Later. But so far so good to be honest with you. Becoming a little bit autuminal, isn’t it now in the UK? Had a very hot summer, believe it or not, everybody. For us, not for you Australians. It’s probably winter for you lot. I’ll take it. The rain stopped. Yeah, it’s all right. It’s all right. Now, Tommy got lucky, didn’t he? He’s way back there. He’s going to lay up. It’s not an easy layup, Jamie. Is it that you’re aiming at all that trees in the right? He’s got to hit eight iron, Sam, or seven maybe. Over the top. Yeah, over a hookie. He’s still got a hook it. So, I think I think the most he can hit is seven and hook it around the corner. Then go with say nine iron. Maybe a wedge. He’s looking straight up, Jeremy. I promise he can. Oh, okay. Well, that’s an eight then. Well, it’d be a wedge for me. I couldn’t. No one, you know, but the ball’s so high if he would. preferred liel. Give yourself a nice light. Get under the ball. Dangerous hitting the hook, isn’t it? With these trees, it’s so easy to smother it. It’s easy to hit through the fairway as well into the rough the other side. He’s not been here before, has he? No, it’s not one he’s practiced. You have to be a brave caddy to say that, don’t you? Just just try one from here, Tommy. Just in practice. You know, it could be a good headwind, but he might not just pass this. What’s he going to do? I wonder Jamie. Pressure this shot or the next one. Up and over by the looks of it. That’s the harder one for me. I think he showed a hard hook off the right there. Yeah. And he likes that shot as well, doesn’t he? Easy sitting here. I think he’s going up. He definitely is going up. Looks like he’s aiming right. Yeah, he’s he’s just turned right a wee bit, but still going to go over the corner. Yeah, looks fine, Jimmy. Yeah, I’m right opposite that ball. Absolutely perfect. You can see the flag and everything. And the green is clear as well for the other two players. So, all systems go. Yeah, but it does mean the the group behind will be waiting back there. Matiama, Ober, and Fitzpatrick. Now, Horchel though 272 the front for Horchel. Still got to hook this quite a bit. Trees are still in your mind here. They’re in his way. He’s got to got to draw it. Started it way right. So difficult to draw with the ball below your feet. It’s a fade biased lie to really turn the right hand over the left. Tricky shot. I was going to say that looks like Patrick Reed in the trees there. What’s he doing here? Yeah, he’s in the group behind, isn’t he? John Perry and Nikolai Hoyard. He’s one under power if you’re interested. 263 all up for Justin. About 248 the front. He’s got his four right now. Didn’t fancy the sevenwood in his bag. I thought he would hit sevenwood here, but he’s going to go full tilt with this club. He’s going to need a bit of run. That’s a big ask with a four iron, but he’s got it online. Not bad at all. Simple chip. Used to be so fast that chip from just short of the green. Used a lot of players over the years. Slightly softer under foot down there. the 17th this edition than some that we’ve had in the previous 70 uh of the BMW PGA. 41st time Wentworth is holding uh hosting I should say. It’s had to ride the cup here in the day too. A long time ago Peter Alice was in the team. Wasn’t it dreamt up here? I think back in the uh that was the pre the pre pre- one. Yeah. Yes. Maybe the mid 1920s was it or something like that. What I found Peter Alice was playing. I think it was I don’t know the idea for it. I’m going to check my I’m going to dive into my notes. Yeah. I went to I went to GPI to try and find whatever that chat thing’s called. AI and they but no idea. No, it’s famous for the the PGA, not the Ryder Cup. And they didn’t know about the World Cup either, the Canada Cup. So, we need to tell Mr. AI to get a grip and look back in history. Niche market there. Sam, we could come to you for Wworth history rather than GPT. Sammy Ryder came from Verilum Golf Cove, I believe, which isn’t so far away. That’s He was a seed merchant, wasn’t he? Oh, I like that. We We’re going to get to the bottom of this because I do have that the Ryder Cup was made here in June of 1926 in my notes. I might have copied and pasted from the wrong section. We’ll see. Whereas it’s going for Oberg. I know those trees. The wrong section. Other other trees. Pan left. A nice nursery in there now. And that lovely turf. You’ve got to drop off it. Yeah. There we go. Few eeries in there as well. Can be tricky to navigate your way out from there. Quiet, please. down the right. Try a little drop. Well, it’s so hard to draw it down here. It’s going to just creep into the edge of the trees probably. I’ll be okay there. Obviously, a layup. Yeah, it’s easy to take the good draws down the the good drives that go with draw down the middle for granted because that’s the norm. Just bailing out to the right. Nice spot for Tommy here, Jamie. 166 for Tommy. Got the remix of Jamie there. Third on the way for Fleetwood. another yard. It was filtered down a little bit nearer to the hole and it was a very poor T- shot. It was out of bounds for a couple of seconds and it bounced back. There’s always that little pause at the top and then he thunders through the ball and that’s a cracker. First shot in tournament golf on the 17th for Matsyama and it was a good one. Fairway found down there down on the right there. Not much green to work with. Throw it up high. That’s Oh dear. It’s not the one he wanted. I stopped it. You think I just don’t want the day to completely unravel in a pretty good performance having been off the course for 6 months or so. Get that one up and down. A par the last would be a a decent effort. We wouldn’t really want to see a six here. Cut will be under par this week I believe. [Music] Yeah, data golf is often a good place to to dive in for cutline probabilities. It’s about even Stevens between two and three under par at the moment, but that’ll shift. Small chance it might be one if conditions get get a little tricky. One underline 37th I believe. Unless that’s his bag number. No, he is. It’s one under 37th, I believe. Beautifully manicured approach here on 17. The green runs just slightly away from the players. Historically, not the easiest of chips to judge this. However, slightly softer conditions this year might make it just a touch easier. Plenty of loft in his hand. Oh, it’s splendid. But it is still a good 10 12 ft past. He’ll be somewhat disappointed. Yes, I’d say he is. By and large, the same problems facing horse. Although off the upside this time, Sam. Yes. Slightly easier. Easier. Club is wide open. Key here is to get speed through the ball. You don’t want to be decelerating. That was perfectly cleared. Yes, that was really good. He got quite the elevation on it, isn’t he? Needed as well cuz it’s still trundled on. um he’ll want to compete at the correct time on Sunday late afternoon, but in all honesty, I think if he was to put four rounds in, he’d be fairly well pleased with his efforts playing against the best that the Eur has to offer and some smattering of world stars as well. Not easy company to keep as you’ve been on the course for so long. Yeah, comfortable pairing uh by personality naturally. Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood. It’s never a bad day out, but easy to feel like being a touch left behind. Not so really the story from Fleetwood. is for birdie. Here it comes. Here it comes. A just too much in all the way. Great effort with Nami. Have to say a little bit of a fortunate five. Yeah, can’t be too greedy. Any Tommy there dodged a bullet off the tea. Need a bit of luck, don’t you? Absolutely. They say make your own luck, but that’s a we bit of a nonsense. You can make luck but usually bad. So putting back up the hill for Justin. You saw it came past from right to left. So just out to the left hand side of the hole, you would imagine with a nice firm clip. Another player that you chooses to use the line for his aiming. Say more than half do that nowadays. And the key is to roll that black line end over end. Just like that. Beautifully carved, David. Oh, looks rather simple when it happens like that. And right on Q for Justin Rose who has just gone three in a row and the 18th awaits. He’s in the top five now. This is for five, I’m afraid, for Horell. He’s one over at the moment. Knock this in. Four at the lad. 72. Give him a good chance of getting weekend work. Well done. Two great putters going about it in completely contrasting styles. All that touch and feel and imagination for Billy. More methodical by Rose. Both working well. You can see where Bberg is. 307 yards to go. Fitzpatrick’s not much better, but at least he’s no trees to contend with. Oldberg is in there. I think they’re going to have to move a bit more. Surely. They often show a lot of faith, don’t they, in the players? Yeah, lucky it’s not me that’s hitting it. I went over. How far can he get it? Been getting at the top of the hill. Yeah, that’s a great shot from where he was. Probably a seven or eight iron from there, but it’s preferred lie. Perfect lie. Top of the hill. Was a great thrill as a spectator when you they stray from the straight and narrow and you get up close and personal with the stars. Yeah, the scamper to get to the ball. Lanny Watkins, famous old American player, was one of the first I saw it woven and he had an awful shot and slammed his club into the ground. I was only 10. That wasn’t what I was expecting to happen. That was a great thrill. Matsyama then taking aim at the green looking for a draw. Not sure he’s found it. [Applause] And this camera angle from up on high looking down flattens it out a touch. There’s a lot to deal with down the right once you get close to 17 green including rough including elevation change including a pin that is cut on that side today as well. We’ll see what he can do from over there. Matiama who’s looked in fine fiddlele out there today. Safe to say just the one drop shot that came at 15. But good aside from that. Yeah, he should be thinking why have I not been here before? 15 years into his career. He’s been he’s been missing out. It’s one of the world’s finest championships this. No doubt about that. Huge crowds. 100,000 people this week predicted to come through the gates. Golf concerts, mansions, famous people, everything. Cold drinks. Great and warm ones. Great range. Great par three course. Excellent clubhouse. We need to look for negatives, don’t we? This is too long a list. Tour headquarters is here. Yeah. Are you saying that’s the negative? Not yet. Okay. Everyone’s been behaving. We’ve had a smattering of rain, haven’t we? Maybe we could put that down. Awful place, isn’t it? Yeah. Get like the two old boys in up in the balcony and the Muppets. Slav. I can’t remember the names. They were classics. The pair of them. The houses have changed over the years. It’s unrecognizable sometimes from the architecture. Used to be the famous boat style house kind of pin high where Matt is just now. Not sure it was knocked down in quite quite the right way, was it? Well, the timing wasn’t right. You had to get permission first and he didn’t. I believe. Don’t quote me. What’s been replaced is the more modern. This is a modern swing, brisk pace, simple as it comes and slightly out on the calculations on that occasion. That a few times today. Come up a good club and a half short. So on the left the best rounds uh we’ve seen here Norin Bjorn Carlson minus 10. Of course the uh the golf course has changed a little along the way as well. So we’ll get the course record award presented by Nexo $40,000 along with it at weeks end should we play the ball down of course mentioned preferred lies. First year of the Rolex series events I seem to recall when Norin won over the wonderful eagle on the final hole 62. That works on Sunday. It’s not too bad on a Thursday either. Oh, how many times has he done that today? Just magnificent. Wonderful judgment of distance on a short iron. If he was to pop that in and find a three of the last, he’d be one shy of that course record. So, it’s a masterclass we’ve been watching today. Tidy as they come. Maybe another birdie on the way to get one step closer to Tom Vayon on top for Matt Fitzpatrick. This is the 18th round to the right. The dog leg par five. Brilliant closing hole now. Lots of jeopardy in play. You can make a three or a seven in a heartbeat. Most of the players can reach in two. Well, all of them if they choose to hit enough club off the tea and it looks like Justin is going to do that. Yeah, he’s still got to wait though. They’re just um one of the players in front is through the fair. I think it’s Keepka. Brooks kept through the fairway. So, just have to wait a little bit longer, I think. But it’s down the wind this uh T-shot off the right. So, you got to cut it around the corner if you can. I would have thought it’d be that mini driver again. I would have thought if you you thought correctly cuz they can reach the bunker sand with anything, can’t they? Yeah. I think they’re moving on in front now. Scorers just wandering off. Yeah. Yeah. I’m not so sure that’s not the the the big dog. Hard to tell. Actually, there’s a player down the right playing. I think it’s Lori Caner. I think he’s way down the on the right hand side, but So, he’s just hit. So, I think we’re going to be good now. I’ve given him a wave. His driver, Mr. How was correct? It makes sense, doesn’t it? Because you can cut that and you can reach the bunkers with the mini as well. So, you’ll be aiming just inside the bunkers and trying to drift it around the corner a little bit. What a hole this is now with this uh pond in front of the green and the bunkers down the left. It’s we’ve seen some finishes here. What a round of golf Justin Rose has put together today as well because he was not happy with his game early on and he’s pulled it round. That’s what great players do. Work it out. You have to be brave if you hit driver. Just turn it. Well, not turn it. Slide it around that corner. Not quite. Well, take the green out of range there. The seven wood. We shall find out. Matsyama shot here. Not much green. Looked to have played it well. Run on a bit though. All the players know missing short ride on 17 is a a no no. Now Tommy on the tea. Same shot for him really as well. There’s either a very large wasp or a drone above me. Hopefully it’s a drone. Have a big sting if it’s a wasp. Must cut it here with this wind off the right. Flewood. This was the mini and it’s straight at the bunkers. Stay in the fairway. Stay in the fairway. Yeah, that’ll go. That’ll be a tester. I hope he goes for it there. That’s uh it’s a long way in there. Probably 230. David’s got the Andy’s book flapping round there now. So hard to get it down the right hand side though, Sam, isn’t it? Yeah, you overdo it. You’re in the road is probably lost ball down the right, right? Come on, Billy. Let’s see a birdie out of you here. You deserve it. You not really hold anything today. A little bit rusty, obviously. Never quite sure when he’s going to hit it. Last time he played that hole, he laid a well with a card in his hand anyway, a three to win this championship. So, he’ll have good thoughts, but he will be laying up this time around. Aubber poor third shot to here. He needs to get this. Oh, that’s going. Is that going to come back? Oh, it is. Oh, look at this. Oh for goodness sake. Hberg seven under par one behind Van. Fantastic. I thought that had gone right. I thought that was going to miss two 3 ft right. I must go back to optitionians you know when you serve me the last time. Well it did go right then. Yes but I thought it keep going. Look at that. How does it keep coming like that? It’s wonderful. Back up the hill for Hideki. Difficult putt to reach the hole with very well called David. It was live. Yes, we’re not kidding you on. I’ve been there before. It’s just low one. Simple as that. Lots of golfers and many non- golfers as well that this great championship which is wonderful to see. Good family day out. Enough going on for everyone’s taste as well as watching the world’s great players. Pal Matiama. One of those. How do you spot a non-golfer? Well, there’s 25,000 people there. They’re not all going to be golfers. Oh, you never know. My dad used to come and watch. He didn’t play. Well, he did, but he was rubbish. I mean, awful. One of the worst I’ve ever seen. Amazing. I be even took the game up. Never mind. He got me started. Anyway, best way of a couple of RDER Cup caps in there as well. Fitzpatrick to join Oberg. He does both capitalize there at 17. One more than the other. Yeah, slightly different fashions. a burger with putter in hand fits with a wedge. Speaking of fashions, it’s fancy hat there. So, let’s jump up to the dog leg of 18. No eagles yet, David. You think there a You’d have thought, wouldn’t you? It’s not a big club in if you had a good drive. Maybe we’re about to see a couple. Oh, it’s early in the day, I guess. And it is daunting second if you don’t get that drive into the perfect position. Then it’s um you know the eagle try goes away. Jamie’s down there somewhere having a look at the lies. No, no chance for Horsche. One would think Jamie. No, he’s going to lay up now. I think just chip it down the fairway because he’s in the thick stuff on a down slope. Tommy definitely go for it. He’s got a great line, good yardage, the about 218 the front Fleetwood. Now Rose, I’m not sure what he’s going to do. He’s had a teaser on the downs slope in the semi. So that’s the scenario here on 18 as the sun comes out again. It’s been a great day’s golf to watch. Hope everyone’s enjoyed at home. We have this 18th though not to be up ahead for Brooks. Now Horchel steep down slope. So not the easiest of shots to just try and nudge forward onto the Highlander fairway ahead of it. Got to get this correct. He’s done well. He’s got a lovely nunge off the cush there to be on the fairway so he can have a preferred lie. You can only preferred lie on the fairway or closely mo grass. The tea would count laying up. Jamie, it looks like very smart. He’s done his work for the day, Sam. Has he? Hasn’t he? Why Why throw it away here? So, very professional round of golf there from Rose. Very impressive. Just knock it down there. He’s been wedging the ball. Great. And get to this pin. Find the fairway though. Concentrate on this, which he does just, but the fairway was found. Justin was a bit mad there because he did a good T- shot, but he just didn’t pull a lie. He would love to have gone for that, but he’s in good spot. He’s got about 100 yards to the pin. Now Tommy 235 ball up. His longest iron is a five iron. Oh no, he’s gone for the This has got to be nine wood. Everybody at home, even the pros use a ninewood. How much loft on a ninewood, Jamie? Well, a lot. Excellent answer. Well, yes, you’re through to the next road. That’s what it says on the bottom. Loft a lot. Let me have a look at it. Oh, hold on. Hold on. Oh, dear. Dear, dear. Tommy, Tommy, Tommy. So near yet. If it didn’t draw as much, obviously it would have been on the green. Just overdrew it. You’d have to think it’s just not gone as far as he figured it would. Way down the grip as well. That might be the seven, but I thought it had gone right at first, but just kept going. inches shre. Yeah, not that it matters. I’m not sure that carried over the the yellow line. Make more difference if it was a red penalty area. Makes a slight difference as to where you’re going to drop. Combing down a touch here. Oberg off the tea. Don’t have to aim so far over the trees with uh 3-wood driver. You have to really take a bit of risk. That will leave something similar to the shot of Fleetwood into the green if he so chooses. So what you were referring to there David about the hazard if it was a red line he could have dropped on the green yellow he has to go back well I was the fact that it hadn’t actually crossed over the the second border of the penalty area but I mean I think his the last point his ball will have crossed will have been somewhere back just to the right of Justin perhaps angles could be deceptive of course had it have been a reden cross Then yes, it would have been two club lengths to the side which would have been advantageous. Top marks on the rules exam. 98 yds awaits Rose here. Great to see F. Back on the bag is Caddy. Longtime friend, great Caddy. He won with Billy Horchel here. So he has the win. Justin doesn’t. Oh, you are good. Oh, Allison, you are good. I’m sure he would have let Justin know that as well. As a former winner of this, I know my way around. Buck your ideas up, son. Get yourself Get your name on that trophy. Not his best, but it’s been a good round. That’s a three-wood as well. You feel the distance these players hit. It is three because if they rip a driver over the trees with a distinct chance it could reach the hazard uh penalty area. Sorry. That’s beautiful. Absolutely perfect. You’re in safe company with me, Sam. You can go with hazard. It’s a stream fun, isn’t it? Do have quite a steep set of stairs out our commentary box. No one’s been pushed out them yet, down them. These two playing nice on the other side of uh the table over here. Such a great venue. It’s a joy to walk around it really from Monday to Wednesday, even if there’s a little rain. Little squaly out there at the moment. Nice reception. [Applause] Hold on. Yeah. Yeah. Cheers. Thank you. Here we go. Let’s have a little little look. Yeah, didn’t so it didn’t cross the second yellow line was the point I was making earlier. They won’t know that from back there and you use your best judgment as to whether the ball crossed the hazard or not and the players will um make a decision as to what they think the last point that ball crossed and then you go back in line the fourth for Fleetwood chance of saving power up and down for a Oh, playing back towards all that red on the leaderboard behind. He’s not going to find a a little red circle of his own down the last nor at the previous. So there two uh big opportunities missed for Fleetwood late in the day here. Oh, and there is the sirens for lightning in the area. So play has been suspended at 1:34 p.m. local time as it the rain starts to roll in where we are as well. hasn’t reached the 18th green yet. And because it’s lightning, they can’t finish the hole, which is a shame for them. So, they’ll mark it, pick it up, get into the clubhouse, get out of the lightning, boys and girls. Keep safe. Always safety first. Yep. So, people will be uh not escorted off the golf course, but shuttled at least. And uh we’ll see what the future holds. Fingers crossed it’s all short. Good round today for Minwi. 68 for both he and Aaron Wright who got their gold stars for the Rolex Series wins at the Genesis Scottish Open. It’s Adam Scott who was playing just ahead of our feature groups today. He was the best of Lori Caner and Brooks kept Cup with his 70. Same story out there for Patrick Reed. So they’re both inside the top 25. Same to how Lee is having a good season to hear. [Music] Same too for the Kiwi Kazuma Kavori who’s found a little bit of a purple patch throughout the European summer. [Music] What does the uh the future hold for us today? We’ll do our best to uh get some updates and hopefully uh the delays won’t be long. [Music] President President’s Cup player there in Sew Kim and a 71 for the South Korean [Music] If you are just sitting uh down with us, let’s roll back through the day for you and uh get you up to speed with some of the action from our feature groups here in the opening round. Start with on 10. Beautiful pop. Love the iron shot. That was to get to four under Rose the Englishman on 11. Green in two, par four. Perfect pace and line and another birdie for Justin. Yeah, eyes on the back nine with this update. Fitzpatrick, another short iron in hand and another impressive shot to follow. Rose again. Another long one. Left to right down the hill. Bingo. Ludvik to the 16th. Six birdies before this. Blustery wins. And that one right over the top of the flag. Little bit of spin. Put me down for another birdie. He said he wasn’t done yet either. He hold it there at 16. Up ahead at 17. Fitzpatrick dazzled again. A magician for this club today. I think this is the fourth time he’s done this. Just virtual tap in for Birdie. And here’s the P. It looks offline at this point, but it wasn’t. He knew exactly what he was doing. And on it Trundled and in for an unexpected birdie for the Swede. gets so excited when he holds a long one, too, doesn’t he? Imagine being that calm. That is magnificent. He’s a cool customer and has been ever since he uh joined our screens in the leadup to the 2023 Ryder Cup. We first really saw him in uh in Crown, didn’t we? When Luke Donald asked him to come over and support the DP World Tour. Just show off what you’ve got to a few players, would you, Ludvik? He played with him in America. He shot 64. No, look over all did. Yeah. Top 10 in the world and hadn’t even played in the major. Extraordinary. And there he is. One shot off the lead. Here is a head down the last out of Tom Von. Not sure you’d want those names right behind you though. kind of Oberg Matt Fitzpatrick as well both with a message to send perhaps going into next the next Fortnite I should say. Not quite next week. [Music] Some scenes from earlier. It is a little glooier out there at the moment. Yeah, lightning’s obviously something that they cannot hang around for. You have to get them off the course for safety of all these wonderful spectators that have followed them round. Get them off safe. That’s the most important thing. [Music] So close to the closing stages for our feature groups. Of course, the afternoon feature uh groups in the main coverage are out there. Murray Maroyy’s one under through three. John Rum one over through three. They’ll all be taken off the golf course at the moment. And there is the race to Dubai affforementioned. The number one Mroy who added to that tally last week with his victory at the Amjan Irish Open. How special that was. Same two. What’s been a breakout year for Marco Penge with two victories. Two very different places. The island of Hainan in China and Denmark. Yeah, indeed. It’s been a stellar season for the Englishman. No doubt about that. Until that victory for Maroy last week, he was right up behind him. Racing all the way to Dubai for the season long challenge. Might well do so. Level path through three. Marco today. So steady away. Close to first time winners on the tour this year as well. Saw Sadio move through Dan Brown picking up his second win. Of [Music] course, so many uh good players on site as well as the G4D tour which returned for the G4D at the BMW PGA Championship for a fourth time. And it’s little surprise to see who is on top. The local Kip Popit just keeps racking up the victories and he absolutely trounced the field this week. [Applause] I just feel really lucky. I don’t think many people get to live out their dreams and I think the people I thought pulling on this G4D tour shows that there’s a lot of people that benefit and can be inspired from this. I just count my blessings. I’ve had 12 surgeries. They’ve all gone reasonably well. Not many people can say that. So, I just feel very lucky. Yeah, it was an eightstroke victory in the end for Kip Popit over Lachlan Wood, who was the other man in the red. The 13th win on the G4D tour for Kip and his fourth win in a row here. It has been a dominant performance here at the Wentworth Club for Popit. So, congrat congratulations to him as he puts another trophy on the mantle piece that’s running out of room. So, everyone is all cleared out down there on 18. See the sponsor village up in the top of your screen. And uh this is is the QR code if you’re interested in joining us uh next year. Register your interest because the tickets do sell out fast. We’ve learned that from this week. I’m sure so many of uh the people that have come here today uh hail from this part of the world, but if they don’t, it’s not a bad place to come to that of London. Look at that. You never see the city quite that quiet. But there really is so much to see and do and so many ways to get around. Can walk, the sun’s out, jump on a double-decker bus. It’s really the best way to see uh you’ve got the London Eye. You’ve got the Shard right along the water, the Burough Market on the other side if you want to go and get a snack. All the treats. Little wonder over 30 million people come here every year. If your time at Well, you can come here as well out to Wentworth. Jump on the train. Nice trip. All right, some of you are just joining us. Players suspended due to lightning in the area. So fingers crossed we can uh show you a little bit more golf this afternoon, but we will keep you up to speed nonetheless. Thanks for your accompany so far in our morning uh feature groups today in our third of five Rolex series events this season. Like I said, we’ll update you as soon as possible, but for now, it’s goodbye from Wentworth.
