[Music] Welcome back to the channel. Welcome back to a new video. You golf life legend talking about legends. Oh my goodness. Montgomery. Delighted to join you lads. Wow. Delighted to be here with you. When we started this channel 5 years ago, I never expected we would have a legend like Colin Montgomery on the channel. I just thanks thank you so much. Delighted to be here. We’ll have a good we’ll have a good nine holes here and we’ll enjoy ourselves. So So yeah, we’re here at the Whizzley and uh you’re taking on Jimmy Bulard. I am. I can’t. I’m so buzzing. I’m so so buzzing. What What are you going to play? So we’re going to play Garden 9. Garden. We’ve got three loops here. Meal church garden. They’ve just revamped the garden. So it is really really user love it. Um taking on this man now that’s where I get a bit nervous because um legend of the I just watched you for all these years you know and what you done I can’t wait to get under it and you tell me you know when you was at the pinnacle of your game like that you was amazing. I’ve got so many questions for you. But first of all me you nine holes. Yes. Stroke play. Stroke play. It’s got to be got to be stroke play hasn’t got to be stroke stroke stroke play. There’s a lot of water out there. So, we’ll go stroke play. Let’s crack on. Are we going stroke play off silk? I just want Well, I mean I mean your handicap nowadays. Scratch. Yes. Scratchish. Unless I’m playing against JT as you know. Plus two. He always pinches a couple off everyone cuz he hates you. He’s got mate. Listen, I’m just I’m just buzzing for this. I can’t wait. Perfect. Thank you so much. Let’s get to the first te on life. Wow. Right, Colin. First. Okay, your honor. And this bit of a funny tea box well forward here, is it? Well, it is. Yeah, we’re slightly further forward, so you got to get left here. This is a That bunker I usually can’t reach, but dog leg path five. I tell you what, I thought I was nervous at the Ryder Cup, but this is uh this is something new does it to you. Enjoy, sir. This is something new, right? Well, good luck to us, eh? Good game, mate. Right. Oh, I’m in that bunker. I’m in that bunker. Not very good. I can’t believe you hardly hit any balls warming up. That’s Oh, no. Well, that’s ridiculous. Proves it, doesn’t it? Huh? Good shot. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Don’t fade too much, though. Hang on. Is that bunker over? Wait, I don’t know. I don’t know. I didn’t see it bounce. Colin, you mentioned the rider cup on the first tea there for T block. Yeah. You never ever lost a singles match, did you? No. No, I don’t know how. Have you done that on Wow. Five down at the turn. The first game wasn’t great though, was it? Was really I was How’d you pull that back? Who was that against? I didn’t really pull it back. He actually sort of Mark Calvia, was it? 1991 was my first Ryder Cup at Kiwa Island. And uh it’s five down at the turn. I remember Burnon Gallagher the captain took over from Tony Jacqueline and he say to me now don’t let this guy get head Monty because he he he he builds on the confidence you know he you know the the birdie birdie so I said well so I saw him after the ninth I said so five down’s good then yeah it’s going well so I was thinking walking to the 10th T I was thinking okay if I lose 10 11 12 that’s eight and six that’s the worst defeat in Ryder Cup singles history. And you’ve just said you haven’t lost the singles. Yeah. I tell you what, I was about to close. Well, hey, I won 10 and 11. Yeah. Christ. I don’t know how. Hold out of a bunker at 10. Three down. I lost the 14th. Four down. And then I And then I He was fading the ball, slicing it really, wasn’t he? Yep. Yep. Good. I mean, he’d won the Open two years previous at at my home club at Trun there in ‘ 89. So he’s no mug. I mean a good player, but he was slicing the ball and the wind was off the left the last four holes straight towards the clubhouse all in the same direction. And if I tell you I finished it was bloody difficult, right? It was solid. It was just opened the course. It was brand new. So it was rock hard and windy. And if I tell you, I was four down and I finished those last four holes. Double bogey par. Double bogey par. It won you. Wow. And I won them all. Wow. Okay. Yeah, there you go. Lost his control there, didn’t he? Big time. Cuz wind off the left so much of a car. And of course, the you you know yourself, the further you aim left, the more it goes, you know. And and how difficult is it to aim towards your problem, you know, and it was difficult for him. And and hey, we’re good friends, you know. In fact, the late Payne Stewart, remember Payne Stewart? The terrible accident he had two months u uh uh uh uh uh in 99. He took him on the beach afterwards and they got some paramedics out and uh and they gave him some oxygen. He thought he’d lost the ride a cup. Really? Which which you know you would. Yeah, absolutely. He he breathing difficulties and and it shows you what it what it meant to them you know. Oh god. Yeah. Cuz they hadn’t won. We’d won in 85 87. We tied in ‘ 89 so kept it. So they hadn’t won since seven eight years of course. So it was a big deal. Big deal. But yeah, I mean it was my fault really. I didn’t really do much. I tried to I tried to, you know, lose, but I bet you did. Right. Six iron. I’ve got a six here. Just obviously a layup cuz there’s water in front of this green. Okay, class. It’s cold and damp. It isn’t going anywhere. Won’t be going very far. Oh, Colin, that’s fat. Go on. Not bad. It’s out. Go on. Go on. Go on. Just sat down a bit. That That bunker’s a nuisance, isn’t it? It was just sat down a bit. It’s a nuisance, that bunker, because it’s so easy to so easy to do that. Leak it in there. Yeah. First shot of the day. Generally, when I’m playing amateur golf, generally you’re looking right off the first te for am. I mean, I know I know Jimmy’s not hardly an amateur, but it it’s generally they leak it out to the right. Yeah, amateurs are anxious to find out where the ball’s gone before they’ve actually hit it. So, they’re looking up early and of course the ball goes the ball goes out to the right normally. Were you nervous before big tournaments and still when you play now? Do you get nerves or I uh Yeah, I did. Yeah, I did. I believed in ownability, but you still you still get nervous. I think nerves are quite good. You can you can benefit from them. You can you can pull a pull from there. Yeah. But I had a great uh sports psychologist with me, a guy Hugh Mantel from John Mo University in Liverpool. Yeah. Became an OBBE. worked with the Olympic team on the down uh on the uh on the uh canoes down the you know how you go through the gates. Yeah. And round and he was brilliant and we had a way of dealing with this uh this pressure on the first tea and uh I started to recite my 37 times table on the first tea. I’ll tell you about it tell you about it more when he’s when he’s uh you’re his third shot here. You crack on. But yeah, it was a way of dealing with pressure. Really? Yeah. Yeah. 160. It’s cold, Colin. Is it You got 160. Yeah. I’m just going to punt those. Playing about 180. Is it? Do you know what I was thinking? 7 plus the 70 plus the wind. Cold. 70 plus the wind 80. Yeah. Yeah. Something like that. Not that I want to help you, but No, but I love it. Let’s hit a shot then through Decent shot. Stay right. Hold up. Hold up. Oh, well done. Sit. Well done. Good shot. All right. Yep. Good shot there. Go. Warming up. Here we go. Yeah. So, we So, we’ve we started to uh recite the 37 times table. 37 times table, which for a reason is quite a difficult one. If you get to 74, you get to 111 and you get to, you know, this sort of stuff and you go, “Okay, 37* 4.” And then it took me away from where I was. So instead of being on the first tea at the rider cup, yeah, I was in a math lesson countdown. I was I was in a math lesson and I was and I was it was it was good, you know. It was great. That is mad. And it took me away. And I still do it. Yeah, I still do it. Yeah. If I get nervous, I still do it. Yeah. 37 times table. 37 times table. And the first I never forget the first T 2002 at the Belelfrey. Yeah. I was first off. Sam Torren put me first off in the singles and we’re eight all going into the singles. So it was game on. Yeah. And and he said, you know, we put you he said he put your strength out first, whatever he went. So I was off. So I thought, I’ve got to win here. And never forget I never heard Iva Robson. Remember Iva Robson the starter? God, he passed away a few years ago. God rest him. Lovely fell. And I never to this day I never heard him introduce my name. I was on the 37 times table. Wow. 37 times for nerves, right? 37. Yeah. I never heard my name. Just so engrossed in doing it. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. Take your mind off it. What we got, Colin? What it says? Well, my hand’s shaking. I don’t know. It’s gone from 157 to 123. Must just get another one. I hit it in the middle somewhere. Is this Is this a good one there? 123. Is that Yeah. Yeah. It’s so cold. It’s more like a five 140 Yeah. Yeah, it is, isn’t it? Yeah. Oh, too quick. Too quick. Aha. In the trap. Aha. Your swing has never changed, Colin, has it? No, it hasn’t. Never changed. No, no, no. Yeah, it’s been like that since a kid. That lovely eye finish. Absolutely. Absolutely. I’ve never really changed it. And uh people have said, “Oh, you got to do this or that.” And I think it was to my benefit that it never changed. Yeah. I think if I’d gone down, I hate to say a le better route or some technical way, I think I would have I would have lost the rhythm. I’d have lost the feel of what I was doing, you know? Yeah. Uh, and my game was all about feel to be honest. Yeah. Uh, feeling the distance in. Okay. How I could judge that distance in. Uh, but yeah, it’s it’s hasn’t changed. No, no, no. You could My followrough’s become unique because it’s higher than the modern game. Yes. I was going to say if you’re a silhouette in golf, your Tiger Woods great. Honestly, I think the most you can see my silhouette. If you was a silhouette, I think everyone would know, even some of non-golfing would fans would go that’s Colin Montgomery. Do you get what I mean? It’s so distinct, isn’t it? That high finish, that it’s more the finish than the back swing. Yes. Yeah. Definitely. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Beautiful hands. Always been good at a trap though, haven’t you? Yes. I don’t mind. We don’t mind bunkers. No. No. We don’t mind bunkers. You just feel like As long as the lies. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. As long as the lies suitable. We’re not We’re not too bothered with bunkers. Right. A little bit. Right to left. Downhill. Left to right. Go on. Go on. Go on. Down to the real game of golf in it. It’s a game within a game, right? Putting. Oh, it’s another completely different game. Is it? Unbelievable, isn’t it? I mean, your granny could be as good as us. I always say that, don’t I? She going to hit it, but she could putt. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, well done. Got it. Stroke all properly. Oh. Oh, hang on. Proper stroke there. You got a game rear. Don’t worry about that. I’ve got gritty. Oh god. Not that I wasn’t expecting it, but it was a good stroke. Yeah. Nice, mate. Two pass to start with. Well done. Tell you what, I was 37 times table there. I tell you, Christ, I was my word. 395 par 4. Hell of a These three bunkers they put in has totally changed. They’ve changed it now. Yeah. Yeah. What was your favorite weather to play in or still play? All right. I mean, Palm Springs. Yeah. What they calling a dome, you know, what Las Vegas, Palm Springs, where there’s not not a breath of wind and it’s 75° or all year. Perfect. Yeah. Perfect. Come, mate. Yeah. I mean, people say they come from Scotland and you like the wind. Yeah. No. Rubbish. Rubbish. Huh? What’s your line here, Colin? It’s that rainy day in Stoke, is it or something? What? Tuesday night. Well, I’m just I’m just between the the flag, right? Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Between the two bunkers. That red flag. The red flag in the distance. Laser. Haven’t lost that fight, have you? Haven’t lost. Is it over there? Is it? I hope so. A good shot. Good shot. That’s made it. That’s made it. I think I don’t think I think I think mine’s in the bunker. Is it? I think so. We’ll find out. I got a bit off the top of the club. So, it might well be. Right. What we got here? Let me get you a yardage. No, it’s okay. I’ve uh I’ve just got max eight iron anyway. So, have you? Yeah. So it doesn’t really here doesn’t really affect it. I’ve just got to, you know, play the percentages here and keep it right and give myself a chance to make four. That’s the idea. Well, ah, it’s gone a bit left. Says me the angles and I’d go. We got that, Colin. We got that rate for him. 38. Got a N. It’s in two. So, it’s like a 145 shot. Oh, no. Carry. Carry. Bit clean. Oh, well done. Lovely shot. Bit clean but Have you always played during your football days or as a kid I played? My dad like taught me. My dad Yes. was like taught me taught me the game in it. Sure. Sure. Played football and then when I was at Peter Brother Barry Fry. Oh, Barry Fry got his he was on TV the other day cuz they just got to the They beat uh Rexom, was it to get to the final of the That’s right. Now, forgive me for not knowing the sponsors of the of the trophy, but they’re at Wembley, aren’t they? And he was on Barry Fry. Lovely fell. Yeah. So, he manager. Yeah. Play as much as I wanted. Oh, good for you. And then the further you go up, the less you golf, you know. Of course. Of course you get time. Of course it is. You can’t. Yeah. Yeah. I was playing 36 holes on a Thursday. 36 holes on a Friday. Brilliant. This game grabs you, doesn’t it? Oh, god. It does. Grabs you. Oh, it’s fantastic. Under pressure already. Hey, so what are you apart from doing the 37 times table? What What are you Well, I’ve just walked up. I’ve just walked up the green there to see the distance between the the bunker and the pin. Okay. And there’s about there’s about eight yards there, which is okay. And it’s on an ups slope, so I can be positive. As long as you commit. Amateurs don’t tend to commit to the shot. You draw out a club, you’ve got to commit to it. Okay, that’s number one. Okay, commit to the shot. And I don’t mind failing if I’ve committed to it. What I don’t like doing is failing and I haven’t even committed to the bloody thing because I’m not quite sure. I’ve got self-doubt. Okay. So, there’s no self-doubt here. I’ve got to just make sure that I I I commit to this shot and be positive with it. Absolutely. That’s number one. That’s number one. And whatever that takes. Uh, light hands at a dress. Always light hands at a dress and and don’t rush it and don’t look up too early as most amateurs do. They look up too early. They look up too early and it’s the classic, you know, and oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh god and short in the bunker. Okay because talking about amateurs I am very very amateur and you’re talking about I always del is that is that self-confidence? Is that well that’s a lack of the club. That’s a lack of commitment, isn’t it? Deceleration. Lack of commitment. You know, it’s like a penalty taker when they stand up and they sort of you can see it, can’t you? You can see that commit to the bloody thing. Hit the hit the damn thing. None of this panic or whatever kind of you feel a bit of an idiot if it doesn’t work. Right. I’ve talked myself into this. Perfect. So, light hands at a dress and just try and commit to it. That’s number one. Too much. Too much. But at least committed. The average amateur might go in the bunker, make six, whatever. I’ve given myself a chance of a four. Uh taken away the word six. Really? Yeah. And and give myself a chance of a four. I was in I was in a bad position there, you know, but that was okay. Okay, here we go. Down the hill. Don’t overdo it, but get it there. Simple as that. Oh, effort. Oh, I thought it was in. Oh, I wish it was match play now. I’d give it to you. Yeah, they have a go at us as well. Our channel, our fans, they they say, “What’s he picking it up for?” So I’m like, “Oh goodness.” Good stroke. Break. Break. Good stroke. Oh wow. Two good putts there. We hit there. Two good putts. Well done. Good. Cheers, mate. Oh. Oh. No one likes Oh, no. They don’t like to see that. We don’t like to see that. Right. I thought that was in. I was walking after that. Yeah. Oh, here we are. Right. Two down early on. Game on now. Come on, Cole. Game on now. Come on. You’ve been here before. You just told us the story. You can do it in five down. So, what the hell? You know, we’ve got 158. Yeah. Is that an eight you’re working on? Downwind. Yeah, I’ve got an eight iron. Right. Okay. He’s all over me, Colin. And he’s all over me. What? I’m too down. I’ve got to be. Come on now. Well, I’m your level. I’m two over. Put it that way. Right. Oh, lovely shot. Lovely shot there. Very good. Oh, Jim. Thank you. Real good, mate. He’s come out to play today. Real good, hasn’t he? Hasn’t he? Hasn’t he just? He said the high cut and he just followed it through there. He’s watching you, mate. What should you do? Hitting them pin eye shots every Oh, what a lovely shot. Oh, I’ve pulled it. Ah, get up. Get up. Oh, sh. It’s a long way. It’s a long way. It is a long way. That’s a big carry there on the left, isn’t it? Yeah. Damn it. Uh, now then, where do we go? We drop up here. Drop up here. There’s a drop zone down there, isn’t there? Not sure about this drop. Are you? We used to do this which was a bit Okay, that was fine. What’s this all about? They done that. Looks a bit silly. I don’t know. It feels like you’re cheating, doesn’t it? It does. Of course it does. And everybody bends the legs and gets it a lot closer. You’ll be placing it shortly. But why they do these rules? But why why are they still allowed to play out of a divot? Someone else is different. A competitor’s divot. I don’t get it. But anyway, long putters up your arms. Yeah, your friend Bernard is a little bit suspect, huh? Well, I’ll leave that for you. But yeah, I agree. I agree with you. Very. Go on. Go on. Go on. Oh my good. So soft. His hands, aren’t they? picks it. Yeah, that’s the word. Elegance. What do you make of this straddling? Does it drive you up the wall or? Uh, it’s a new way of lining up the putts. I suppose people are beginning to complain that there’s more footprints within the yard of the hole, you know. I get it. Uh, okay. The greens are firm. Fine. But when they’re not firm, Yeah. there’s more footprints around the around the hole. Yeah. Have you ever used it? No. You just No, I haven’t. No. And you saw the last hole. I probably should have done. Hold your head up. Yeah. Not bad. Not bad. Good pace. Great pace. Oh, she had a chance. Quite quick, aren’t they? Aren’t they? Yeah, they definitely know you was coming out. Well, that was a Tell you what, they’ve trimmed them for the president. Let me tell you. Yeah. Tell you what, I was uh I was fooled at the last hole. It went on another two foot than I thought it was going to do. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Especially downhill here. These are for March. These are quick. Oh my god. It’s a walk after again. Got me old mate David Sean in them holes. How do you ever do this game as a job? Hey, how do you hell? Yeah. How the hell do you ever do this as a living? Bloody crazy game, huh? Is it? I do have respect for you for that. I Isn’t it? How is this? You’re playing for your wages. Frustrating bloody game under the sun, but we love it, don’t we? That’s, you know, that’s the problem. I’m not sure if I’d love it for a living. I got to be honest. Us footballers, we already banked it. We got a contract there. The contracts. The contracts are great. We have to perform. That’s what I’m saying. User under the gum, right? Yeah, we have to perform. Uh there’s nobody giving us 4-footers, you know, you know, before we start really contract, you know, with with all respect contract wise, but yeah, I mean, you know, we make a bit of money off the course. Fine. That’s covering. Yep. But you’ve got to earn it. You got to earn it. Yeah, absolutely. Right. Third hole. 460 yards. That’s the fourth hole. Yeah. Full fed. Oh, full f60 yards. Is it really? We’re flying around. Life on tour can be brutal, can’t it, Colin? It is. If you’re not making cuts and you’ve got to pay for your caddies and Oh, it’s you know, it’s it’s about caddy caddy at four grand a week. You’ve got your expenses, you got your flights now. Yeah. So, it’s about 10 10,000 a week you’ve got to pay out in America, say. So, what you’ve got to be earning, you know, if your tax included, you’ve got to be earning £18,000, which is $30,000, and you got to be in the top 10, or else you’re not breaking even. Wow. So, it’s, you know, game on. Yeah. It’s a gamble, isn’t it? It’s a gamble. Big gamble. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. There’s more to it than people see. It’s okay. Might just be in the semi, but yeah, it’s okay. Good strike. Yeah, good strike. Thank you. You’ve got a good lag to the swing, you know. It’s where the power come. You got a good hand speed. Yeah. Yeah. Nice beauty. Go on, gents. Please carry on, gentlemen. Okay. You mentioned um Sawrass. Wonderful place. Yes. You had a couple of chances to win there. I did. I did. I did. I did. Yeah. I was one up with one up with three to go. Yeah. I just birdied 15 Freddy couples. 1990 199. No glove ready. Used to. That’s like tempo tan golf swings, wasn’t it? Oh. Yeah. And he eagled. He hit the board at 16 on the right. Came back in, eagled it. As I’m walking down 16, he holds a putt from the top left. You know where the the pin is on the right, bottom right on Sunday, just over the trap there. And he hold it from the top left for a two. So he went 3-2, an eagle birdie, and that was it. And I finished second to him. And then David Duval won when he was number one back in 2000 99. He was good. He was good. The golf ball, right? Yes. Yes. So many of you used to cut the He’s coming back into the game though. You see Moraua, everything’s cut. Woods wood started cutting it. Brooks kept cutting it. You know, it’s a classic case. You can talk to a phase. You can’t talk to a hook, you know. And and and and it’s this control of distance. That’s where I wanted to get on to your distance control. Was it seven order in a row? Yeah. Something I don’t know what it was. I do. Right. But your your It was the distance control that was unbelievable. Is that I was I was a bit of detail. Is that because of there’s no manipulation through the ball and it’s more of a hold shot? So I think you’re retaining loft more. Do you know what I mean? Well, number one, number one, if we start off number one, I was on the fairway. Yeah. Control 100%. Over those seven years. Over those seven years, if you added up all the players in Europe, I would have hit more fairways than than than anyone else. Right. I was on the fairway more often. So that gave me my strength, which was my iron play. I’ve never seen a decent iron player from the rough. Okay. Yeah. So that was number one. So, I was on the fairway and then I could control the distance from the fairway, right? Because there wasn’t anything between the club and the ball, right? Yes. It was the manipulation of the hands. It was all hands. Yes. And I like the way that you play your hands as well. I like hands players. I like the Garcia, the Sebis, you know, uh, uh, Angel Cabrera even. Unbelievable. You know, the South American hands, Jose Cateras, and these guys, great great hands, educated hands, you know. And, uh, I was a bit like that. So you Yeah. Yeah. I was hands I was hands more than I was body. Yes. And uh and I could manipulate I could hit the ballund if you gave me 162 yards. Right. I could hit it. Doesn’t matter what it says on the tin here. Okay. I wasn’t interested. Okay. I wasn’t wasn’t interested what number it was. That’s fascinating. Right. Okay. Not not interested the number. Could be a nine iron. Could be a five iron. I don’t care. Yeah. But I could hit it 162. Wow. And it’s amazing, isn’t it? If you if you see the graphs that they have, you’re always closer to the hole pin high than you are long or short. Unbelievable. That’s where I’ve got to improve. I’m good with my lines pin high and nowhere near it. I need to I need to get to Trackman help with that. I think it does. I think it does. I’m I’m not really I’m getting I’m oldfashioned angles. No, we didn’t have that. Didn’t have it. Your visualization. We didn’t have a bushel. We didn’t have, you know, we had a no need looked like a 7R. So, it was a 7R, you know. But uh yeah, I was always quite good at judging the distance. Yeah. More more than my competition. And that’s why I did a fairway. And that’s why I did Okay. But from the fairway and my game was that I that I uh I thought 16 under was a good score for four rounds. Always rounds. So that’s four four under a round. Okay. For a tournament. So how do you get to four under? Well, you hit you hit 15 16 greens in regulation. That was what I did. I hold four four or five putts around out of 16, which wasn’t great, but it was good enough. And that was my four under. I wasn’t making mistakes. Yeah. And that’s what that’s what it is. Uh Hogan always said that he he allowed himself two mistakes around. Yeah. I allowed myself one and a half to be honest. And that allowed me the five birdies, which was the four four under, 16 under. And you generally you’re unlucky not to be in the top three. Yeah. At 16 under. Okay. And that’s the way I used to I love the way you broke it down. simplistic. The whole thing was simplistic. It wasn’t It wasn’t cuz sometimes it can all get too much. You’re looking at 1620 under. You’re like, “Oh, first TE. Where’d you start?” That’s what I mean. It’s hard enough, isn’t it? Yeah. You start by hitting the fairway. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. Spot on. And then you And then you then you can hit the green. Yeah. Yeah. Right. Because generally 90% of the time if I’m on the fairway, I I would have hit the green. Yeah. And then we have a birdie charge. Yeah. No, I love you’re off. You’re off and running. Talking to fairways. Let’s get this one. Just stripes it. Right. always been a favor of the ball. I just peppered you with a load of question. I just pulled the camera crew down because this is really important to me as a golfer to pinch on your mind. Um I’m going to run you through some scenarios just how you see golf being a fader of the golf ball. Yes. Um back left pin. Back left pin. Heavy right to left win. Mhm. And a draw lie like ball above your feet. How are you above your feet? It’s a draw lie. I know. Even a hook lie. Yeah. Well, I’m not going left. Okay. I’ve got great respect for my good friend Bernard Langanger. Okay. who as a professional I’m not saying he’s the most talented but as a professional golfer my god unbelievable unbelievable the lack of mistakes you know he would never ever go left and neither would I okay even on the uphill hook lie if you like because your weight’s on the right side you’re going to hook it right so I’m always going to play the percentages I’m always going to go right and then and then hopefully two putt down I I used to look at a yardage sheet at the start of a round of golf they used to have the the sheet comes out all 18 holes And I loved it when the majority were on the right hand side of the green. Really? Well, as a course I get it. I get it. Yeah. Yeah. I’m aiming for the middle of the green and just letting it go. Yeah. You feel safer, don’t you? That’s why I’ll give you that scenario. Yes. Because because I didn’t like the pins tight left because I couldn’t really It was It was a risk to go for them more so and I didn’t I didn’t really take risks, you know, in my game. Yeah. I did once I did once in 1996 at McGomery Dubai there, you know, uh at at uh not McGomery Dubai, at the Emirates Club, you know. Yeah, that was the only risk I really ever taken and it paid off fine, but hell of a goal shot, weren’t it? I don’t like risk. That was unbeliev. So that draw, so you’re that back left pin. Sorry to go on about this. No, no, no. That back left pin, you’re imagine with the wind hand off the right with that draw lie. You’re just sort of in a like a aren’t you? I’m getting ahead of blocking it basically. I’m making sure that my that my hands right do not beat my body. Yeah. Yeah. I love that. If my hands beat my body, I’m hooking it, right? Yeah. So, what happens is these hips have got to come through. I’ve got to take my time. Yeah. Because a golf swing with time is a good one. Yeah. I’ve got to take my time and allow that to happen first. Then I’m late with it and then I’m okay to to to keep it outright. Never ever do I have my hands I did on the third hole there. Go. But never ever normally my hands get ahead of the ball. If my if my hands ahead of the ball I’m dead. And them thoughts there that hands ahead that body. Are they the thoughts you have going into that shot as a professional go right? Okay. Simple simple but you know simple especially when you say especially when you say an uphill lie. Yeah. Because what happens with an uphill lie is the weight is on the right side. Of course it is. You’re uphill. So you go back and you don’t come through. The hands get busy. flip it through and of course the ball goes left. I love it. You know, thanks. That’s why uphill goes left and that’s why downhill it goes right because the weight’s too far forward. Got it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Nice. Uh I loved it. That was big for me that that was really big for me that chat cuz me being a fader of the golf bar, I see everything left to right. So good. Good. Well, you see the same as me then. I’m looking at this. I can’t even draw it. I can’t This is a difficult pin here. Yeah. 191. 91. Yeah. 191. Cold. It’s downwind, but yeah, I’ve got a five. 191. I was commentating on the on the Sky Sports and Maroy or Bryson or something and Yeah. 191 and I’m going, “Oh, that’ll be a six.” Yeah. What they’re eating like nine? What? What? Oh, dear. Incredible. There must be there must be I mean there must be I was going to say loft on these clubs must be something crazy. Bryson’s known for it. Bryson’s known he’s eight irons. Well, one is five. He had a five iron when he won the US Open. It was like 17°. Yeah, it’s ridiculous. Which is like 10 more than 10 less than it should be. Ridiculous. No good. Right. Okay. Go, go, go, go, go, go. It’s beautiful. Go on. Golf shot. Okay. How straight is it? Put under a bit of pressure at least to try to shot. Thank you. 167 downwind. 160 shot. 155. Small eight iron. Just nudge a low eight iron in there. A good shot. Well done. Good shot again. Thank you. Playing some J. Yeah. Just that Danil light has always got to come out right. Yeah. You know Bournemouth for established Premier League out. Yeah, they are now. You know Brenford. They are now. That would be a shock if Bournemouth. It’d be a shock now if Bournemouth got relegated next year, wouldn’t it? A hell of a shock. Exactly. Even Brenford, I watched them play against Man City. Oh, they’re no mugs, you know. They run and run and run. Yeah. I think what you need is a couple of years there. Yes, I know. Ball to be solid. Solid management. You know what it’s like. Second managers left, right, and center just based on results. It’s a tough It’s a tough game. It’s a problem. Um, so yeah, absolutely. Can lead state. Yeah. Right. Scored the winner there once, you know. Did you scored the winner? Did you in Ellen Road? at Ellen Road and you the way the weigh in. Oh god. For Wigan. Oh, did I go? I bet you I bet you did. They didn’t. It was a break. It’s a breakaway. It’s about the 82nd minute. Was it was it good for you? Magic. Good for you. Magic. What a stadium though to play in Ellen Road. That’s pumping 3:00. Yes, it is, isn’t it? Just the whole phenomenal. Phenomenal. These Northern and Wiggins are saying these Northern teams have the passion, don’t they? Unbelievable. They have the passion. Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester, you know, the Everton’s, you know, you go down to the hate to say the Chelsea, Fulham, the different it’s different for 5 years. There you go. Friendlier. It’s passionate. It’s working. It’s workingass passion for the game, isn’t it? Fantastic. Love it. Yeah. Yeah. Come on. Go on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Effort. That was up and then down, wasn’t it? Yeah, it’s a bit Wasn’t the easiest one. It’s a bit of a naughty part. It wasn’t the easiest one. All right, I’ve done my lovely shot. We talked about being pin high. Look at you. I know. Do you know what? I was within a foot of it. Well done. Yeah, we talked about it. A good pot. Bit of a wide. No, no, that’s No, that’s that’s good putt. Good four there. Got hole. Yeah, I think it’s stroke one on this nine, isn’t it? Definitely today, especially with that back pin. Yeah. How long have you done the old uh claw stuff? Do you know what? I I I got yippy. I want to show you something in a minute. A claw chip as well sometimes. Oh, dear. That’s how bad it got. But it’s just really good. It feels like a putt. Yes, of course it does. Well, it feels like a course. I mean, people people do they use their putting use their putting grips, you know, when I’m in running shots. It’s really nice. Sure. Yeah. I love the claw. Love it. Good. Yeah. Well done, mate. Thank you. Deserve that. I see I see a number of a number of pros. Well, Scotty Chef, number one in the world. He’s he’s regular from 20 foot out, but inside 20 foot he’s claw. That’s right. I’ve seen that. A few of them change it up. Change it up. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Because it does give you it does give you this. I mean, I’ve tried it myself. Thought about it. Well, I mean, it’s you can’t knock it, can you? No. boys are going to it. It does take the right hand out of it. Yeah, it takes it all just a guide, isn’t it? Yeah. Yeah. And it does work. Oh god. Yeah. Yeah. Right. Fifth hole. Fifth hole. 503 yards. Path five. Beautiful golf hole. Good golf hole. Good hole. Downwards again. Again. You know, bunkers are the safe play. And yet, if you want to be tight, you bring it in the bring it in the the river. It’s it’s a good hole. Good hole. Okay. Is it just or is it Could it be on the right hand bunker? No. Short of it. Just it. I don’t know. You’re not short of much. You hit the ball. Well, thank you. What What are you What was your club head speed? Do you do you do all this? I’ve been on been on the speed sticks lately. Oh, have you? Have you? I’ve been They all me now. They all take the out of me. up. Hey, I tell you what, they’re good, aren’t they? Unbelievable. Have you Have you gained I was I was 106 club speed. 106. Well, I’m Well, I’m 103 to 112. Oh, Christ. 6 miles an hour. Oh, Christ. Which is like 15 yards. 2 and a half 2 and 1/2 per per yard per mile. So, I see 15 yards. Unbelievable. Like there’s But you know what? I feel a little bit like looser as well. Do you get what I mean? Like flexibility. Yeah. Yeah. I’m I’m I’m 47, Colin. I’m getting on. I was at Pilateses class last night. It’s hard work. I tell you I tell you what, Pilates is hard work. Yes, I’m four over after four. It was hard work. Thank you very much. Yeah, he’s like hard work. Oh, mate Christ. Christ, you know, I love it. I’m lying in bed thinking, hang on a minute, it’s left side. But of course, I stretched out too much and I thinking of something else. I’m thinking, oh my god, bloody hell. And it was like right. But yeah, flexibility that will stop it. Stopped Sevy, stopped Faldo, stopped Norman. Yeah. Stop Wizzy in a way. I mean, you know, in a way you’re still playing, but uh stop Lyall in a way. Flexibility. It’s number one. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, that’s just nerves. That’s just do the 37 times table. 37 times table. I’ll be fine then. You see a dear too quick. Ah, missed that bunker. You’re good. Yeah, it’s right. You’re good. Yeah, it’s okay. It’s right in it. Lucky it was that bad. Well done. Too quick. You You’re talking leads with Jimmy there. Yes. You’re a massive leads fan, aren’t you? I am a massive leads fan for 50 I’m 61. Yeah. We started my father’s business moved down from McDonald’s Biscuits in Hillington Estate in Glasgow. Yeah. That was a Scottish connection of course and then moved down to Foxy’s Biscuits in Yorkshire. Yeah. Yeah. In Batley in West Yorkshire. Yeah. Foxy’s Biscuits. So that was his business. Yeah. And with that job came four season tickets for Ellen Road. And I was seven at the time. So I’ve been supporting leads for 50 54 years. Yeah. So we used to go as a family. Mom, my late mom and dad used to go and and my brother and so the fors used to go and it was a great time to to watch Leads because of course it was Don Revy’s time. It was Jimmy Armfield remember and all the stuff and it was and Howard Wilkinson when he won the league you know before the Premier League started. So, it was a good time for Leeds. They were they were top of the tree and uh and you keep you keep with it, don’t you? You know. Absolutely. So, that’s how the leads connection came on. It was my father’s business really was uh was Foxy’s biscuits. Yeah. Yeah. I think you’re going up this season. Currently, when we filmed this uh top of the table, currently top of the table. As leadeds fans, we are used to we can’t we’ve got lots of self-doubt and negativity. Okay. But looking at two out the three as we stand right now today, you know, we’ve got to stay ahead of Burnley andor Sheffield United. And with the games remaining, there’s a lot at home and a lot of teams that are well below us in the league, you know. So, yes. We should we should make it marching on together. But the thing is, can we stay there? That’s that’s the next thing, you know. You know, do we need to invest a lot of money? Don’t That’s the problem. That’s the problem, you know. Can that team the way it is right now sustain, you know, to can that team right now get 35 points in the Premier League? Possibly not. Yeah. Hate to admit it, possibly not. So, what do we do? You know, we have to buy, do we? some because the trouble is we lost Rafinia, didn’t we? We lost Somerville, we lost Archie Gray, we lost Harrison, we lost uh uh you know, it’s it’s h just it’s a it is a shame that we’ve had to sell the players we’ve had to sell, you know. Did you play as a youngster? Not really. No, no, no. Our our school was golf when you were younger. Our school was not really no golf. I was away at school. So we did three terms. We did a term and a half of rugby. Yeah. We did a half a term of hockey. Field hockey on the rugby pitch. Yeah. Which was a disaster going to say. And then the summer term was cricket. Never. So there was no really football. Not football. No. And then during the summer months back home, yes. I played a bit of golf. So there was no real football. No, no. It was it was a a weird sort of thing. Yeah. I never really got into the football as a as a player, you know, playing for the local teams or the the youth teams or whatever. No, I never did that. I just I just loved it. Yeah. And you can’t not supporting Lead United. Exactly. As we said earlier, it’s a passionate. It’s a passionate one city club. Oh, it’s massive. You know, massive. Massive. Some boys are amazing. It’s a premiership. It’s a premiership outfit. Yeah. It’s a premiership team. I I know we can say that about a lot of them, you know, but leads are Yeah, leads are right. I’ve got a little bit of an issue, but we’re okay. See, it’s quite handy being short off the tea. You don’t go into bunkers like Jimmy does. You see, it’s quite handy, right? A little uh hybrid here. Great. We club these, aren’t they? Get the ball airborne. Just keep it down that left wing and then in and hopefully get one back on him here. All right. Yeah, that was sounded lovely. Should be all right, I think. So, yeah, it should be a good line, I think. A little bit left, but it should be okay. It’s not a great lie. Just going to wedge it out. Don’t do nothing too special. Oh no, Jimmy. Oh, I’ve hit two of them today. It’s okay. It’s missed that bunker. I’m going to try and cut a seven. Come on. Big cut. Oh, golf shot. What a shot. Played it well there. Oh, that’s a great shot. Wow. He is very good. Much better now. Surprise. That’s a hell of a shot. That was surprised myself there. To get that pin high was a hell of a shot. Cheers, mate. Fantastic. Superb. Light hands. Feel the distance. Oh, go on. Going up the hill. Go on, go left. Good line in it. A good line on it uphill. Right to left. Come on. See if I can get a nice little birdie. Go on. Go on. Oh, it was in, wasn’t it? Yeah, it was in. You had a great line on it. Go on, mate. I won’t tread on you. You go. Great line on it. Right. We need this badly. That was a poor first putt there. We need this one just off that left wing there. No, no, just went right. Early doors. Ah, shame. Oh, dear. Well done. Good five there. Five in the end. Well done. Two five. Yeah. Ah, level par. What’s Colin? Four over. Three over. We soon find out on the scoreboard in a minute. Right. Here he is. Right back into the wind again. Eh 47. Yeah. I’m going to hit a low bullet squeezes. Okay, that’s what we need. Good. That’s a good shot. That’s a very good shot. Yeah. Nothing wrong with that. I think it’s short of that bunker into the wind. Is it? Oh, there you go. Yeah. Is it okay? Just I like the way that was controlled, you know. Yeah. The hands. You give yourself time. The hands. It was only going one way. Thanks, mate. Very good. Very good. Yeah, I like that. Oh dear. Ah, it’s off that right. Oh dear. Dear dear. Yeah, it’s pitched up there. Come on. Is that all right? We’ll get up there. Right. Wedge in there. It’s cold. It’s got colder again, hasn’t it? Freezing. Was that just into the wind, I think. Right. Wedge. This will draw in off this slope. Off the ups slope. So, aim a bit left. It’s on it. It’s on it. Oh. Oh, god. Bloody hell. I thought that was bang on. It hit half a club more, Jimmy. Do you know what? It’s just got so cold. It just It just suddenly just picked up as well. The wind just Wow. picked up. Or was it me? I think it was me. I think it was me. Right. I’ve got 103 107 because of the temp into one 14 115 got 54. So it’s like a 454 really 115 shot just straight out of the trap. Yeah, good shot. Well done. Well done. Yeah. Cheers, mate. Thank you. Tag’s right. Wow. Well, what don’t we do? Don’t get back to our feet here, please. Hey, how are you playing this? Well, there’s about three ways of playing. You can putt it. That’s what I do. I could putt it, which is the safest play, right? Yeah. Provided you hit it hard enough. You can hit a seven iron into the bank and let it come up or you can throw it up in the air, but there’s no space really to stop it. So, really the answer if I was if I was doing it as I am, it’s a putter. It is. That’s the safest play. There’s nothing there’s nothing in our way. We just have to make sure we hit it hard enough. Yeah. You know, because we do not want this thing coming back to our feet. So, we just commit to it and hit it hard enough up the hill here cuz it’s dodgy. You can’t really lob it. And the seven iron is the other option, but I think this is safer. So, we’ll just try and hit it hard enough. Oh, hang on. Stop. Yeah, you’re good. Oh, thank God. Just that. Can I run up the hill and mark it? Hey, are you an Audi or an innie? Do you know what? I liked it in, but now I’ve had so many hit and ricochet. I know. I know. I don’t know. I know. I know. What about you, Colin? Well, I’ve been playing this game for 55 years. I never had the pin in and I still don’t. I can’t see it. I don’t know. It hasn’t really speed up play. They wanted to speed up play, but it hasn’t really done that. Just makes it a hassle for caddies and for nobody knows what’s going on. My good pace. Great pace. Oh, well done. Well done. Well done. Yes, we do have a birdie dance. Even if it is a bit embarrassing to call him Montgomery. He’s a West Ham. He’ll be blowing bubbles shortly. There’ll be some bubbles out in a minute. Hey, where’s that come from then? The bubbles. Any bubbles in here? I don’t know. Where does it come from? What is it? What’s it about? I should know. I don’t know. Pretty B. I don’t know. I’m a West Ham fan. I’m from East End of London. I should know. I don’t know. I mean, it’s there’s a lot of bubbles when they come on the pitch, isn’t there? These machines. Spray them everywhere. Yeah. Yeah. Tell him tell him the story about Paladano. Yeah. I will after this after he boxes this. Come on. No. Unlucky. No. Oh, you got me today. Tell you got me today. Go on. So I signed the same day as Palania was at West Ham. Okay. Living legend at West Ham. Living fans terraces loved him. Yes. And as you said, I’m forever blowing bubbles. Been there long. Whatever. Whatever. And um Paulo being the character. But usually all the boys line up in a tunnel. Yeah. Forever blowing bubbles come on. You come on and rip the floor. The third game he’s got the armband. He’s coming. He said to the bloke, “Once all the boys run out, play my song.” So he’s turned off the buff song. It’s been there since. God knows he come out to do the older boys are like who’s this charact unbelievable character and then the terishes just loved him from there you know what I mean but yeah po was yeah good pulling honestly unbelie I learned so much from him oh good who’s your favorite ever player ah very good question I like Laura Peter Lurmer Peter Lmer he had that shot on him you know he had a good he had a good right foot in him didn’t he Peter Lurmer you But Eddie Gray was great on the left wing. Yeah. Yeah. Frank and Eddie Gray down the left. Eddie Gray is now playing as well. What’s that? Archie Gray is now playing. I tell you what, he’s done well, you know. I think he’ll be a very good player in his day. Archie Gray. Absolutely. He’s done well for Tottenham because he’s had to play out of position all year. Yeah. Yeah. Some player. Yeah. Good player. For those of you who can’t see temperature, it’s cold. It’s not a lot of field for us handsy players. Let’s call that putting myself in the same bracket as Colin through six. One under through six today. I tell you what, it’s bloody good, I tell you. Oh, no. A little bit too much. Oh, no. Okay, it’s all right. Should be just short of those trees. Is it? Yeah, it’s on the bank there. It’s all right. It’s all right. Well, hey, the only problem is left, isn’t it? Yeah. as I’ve been proving today. So, let’s get slow it down and get it ahead of it. Go on. Is it? You’re good. Fair life. Oh, dear. Oh, dear. The fairway point. One round there, didn’t we? Miracles will happen. Hey. Golly, I never like backing up to I tell my caddy, “Look, if if you see anything in the water, remind me, just run.” Yeah, you see horseshoe every week. I know. He touched I tell you what, if that thing he he flicked it and it ran in the water. Okay, but I tell you what, if that thing goes the other way, Yeah. you’re You’re in trouble. Oh, god. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, sounds great, but bloody stupid. So just just let you know lads if anything does if you see a head spring up here. Yeah. Let me know would you [Laughter] please because uh just not worth it this shot. No definitely not. Right. Seven iron. Keep it right here. Got lucky with the drive. So let’s try and finish it off. A it’s gone left. Damn it. Get up. It’s gone left. Ah. No. Oh dear. Not so good today. It is absolutely Baltic. So not so good today. That’s the excuse. Here he is. He’s on the bank here. He’s all right. He’s all right. All right. 151 put on five for conditions. 56 downwind 146 148 bit above I ain’t going to get full purchase 150 shot 9 iron. Ah just gone left on me. Wow, terrible. Just scared of this tree as well. Okay, so pitch it halfway between the pin and the hole. That’s my landing area and just about a yard left of the hole cuz it’s going to move to the right when it hits the green. So, let’s see. A beautiful. Oh, it’s magician like that was good. That was had a good short game. Yeah, cuz that was like Well, that was that was that was good. That was smooth. Light hands. Light hands. I know it hasn’t. I know. I’ve been terrible off the te weaken your gripper or anything like that. I don’t I don’t weaken it. I just light hands. Say three or four out of 10. Really? Three or four out of 10. It look And that and that makes you feel the weight of the club head. Yes. If you’re tight with it, you don’t feel the weight of the club head, do you? Gorgeous. Yeah. I loved it. Right. Come on. If you get inside that, you’re doing well. Come on. Yeah. Known to be good out of traps. I am. I’ve got a bit. do. I gone. Oh, nearly. Oh, god. It was nearly good. Oh, well played. Go on. Go on. Well done. It’s sloppy. Just don’t leave it in, Jimbo. What a silly. Nice four, Colin. Well, thank you there. Right. So, well, take your time. I’ve got this for a five. Right. Yeah. One of mine today. Just for a bogey. One of mine. Stay up. Stay up. Hard luck. Hard luck there. There’s a double bogey out of nowhere. I put the cat amongst the pigeons. Fly though. The first line, the bunker, that downs slope wasn’t easy. No, you were just a foot from being very good. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, right to left helping. Yeah. Yeah. 187 is a clear on the pin line and 207. 207 pin. Okay. Fine. You got four. Well, I’ve got this little hybrid, this five hybrid, but I think a four is probably the club. Four. Come on. Come on. Come on. Put the woods away in the par threes. Come on. Hey, you seen Freddy Couples though? Oh, I know. Freddy Couples gone to a six iron. So, he’s got more iron. Six iron’s his longest iron in the bag. Unbelievable. I know. He’s got the seven wood and the nine wood and all sorts of stuff. Well, hey, whatever. Whatever does it, I know. Whatever gets it there, right? I know. Yeah. Come then, mate. Right. Come on. Forearm properly hit should be okay. And not properly hit. Ah, grab a piece. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Grab a piece. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, just just Come on. Come around. That’s a shot. Okay, mate. You got the same club or five for you? I’m I’ve got a five in me. Five. That sounded lovely. Go on. Carry, carry, carry, carry. Oh, good job, Jim. That’s so good, mate. Thanks, mate. That’s a lovely good enjoyed that one. Can you can just talk Jimmy through your bag cuz you seem to have a different Yeah. PXG colorway. Yeah, I’m a bit I’m a bit of a mixed bit of a mixed bag right now, you know. I’ve got the I’ve got the PXG uh uh wedges which I think are lovely, you know. Yeah. Feel to them then. What’s just the feel? Just the feel. Yeah. And I’ve changed the weight. I used to have 128 uh uh g shafts and they’re a bit heavy and these are back to 115 which is much better for me. The boys going to these? Yeah. Okay. I’ve got the PXG irons at home. I’ve got the Callaways. I just happen to have the Callaways today. I mix and match with them. You know, you had a little go on pings. I see you up there. A little go through your bag without you seeing me. Oh, did you? Little ping number. I had pings. I’ve got Callaways. I’ve got PXG, which I like as well. Uh I’ve got the Shrixons. I’ve just I’ve got the Mizunos as well. I just just it just the feel. Yeah. But you’ve always been a big Callaway boy, haven’t you? I’ve looked after that was my that’s my DNA was a Callaway. That’s Callaway. X16s. That’s right. and the old big birthers and all the stuff used to be hockey sticks. I was the I mean I mean I’m not saying they were the prettiest clubs in the world, but my god they worked. Unbelievable. My god, they worked, you know. And I’ve got the ping mostly the ping woods. I’ve got I’ve got the uh the 440 there, the new one there. Well, look at that. And I’ve got again Yeah, the other 440. Uh the max the 3-wood. You got the 3wood as well? I’ve got the 3-wood as well. The max. Is that what you’re using? Yeah, I’ve got the driver and the 3wood. The driver and the threewood. Yes. I got the driver and I got the Qi 10. Okay. Okay. the Qi 10 and I’m using this right now. It’s the Elite. This is a new one about this. Yeah, that’s the reason I’m doing that is because it’s got low spin. Okay, got you. This this isn’t spinning, right? And my problem because I’m because I’m got this oldfashioned swing. I tend to I tend to come down in it a wee bit too much and of course it’s generating too much spin. So I’ve got to use the lowest spinning driver that I can find. And that right now is the lowest spinning driver I can find. So, it’s at least when it hits the deck, it goes a wee bit as opposed to stopping dead, you know, and it’s just a 60s. 60s. I mean, I’ve gone off the I had the X’s in the day, I suppose, but I mean, the S is more, right? Of course it is. Of course it is. I’m 61 for Christ sake. I love it. I’ll be going on to regulars shortly. No, I love it. And this the putter, the flat stick. This is the This is the new one. This is this the square to square and and it’s very labesque, you know, if for those who understand what I’m saying is that the the shaft very much center shaft. You see a lot of the guys now center shaft. Yeah. Unbelievable move. A huge move to center shaft putters. And and the balance is superb. And it keeps because that’s set back slightly from the phrase, the hands are set slightly forward automatically, a bit like the lab stuff. And it actually works extremely well. So this is and I like the way that the Odyssey the seven I used to I used to use a seven all the time and they used to have a mini used to used to go a little bit smaller. This is this is back to the original size which I like. Which I like. Yeah. They like face balanced. The whole thing’s balanced everywhere you look at it, you know. And and it is it’s a lovely putter. So love it. Yeah. No, I’ve put Well, I’ve only had it sort of six months since it’s come out, but this a this a very good putter. Monty’s bag. Everyone get on there. There you go. Cheers, mate. There we go. Colin Montgomery. If you are enjoying this, please like and subscribe. Like I said in the intro, we did not expect to have Colin Montgomery on Golf Life. And that’s down to you legends for all the support. So, thank you so much. I don’t know why I’m still looking at the bag, but um Colin Montgomery, he’s on Golf Life. What did they say? PGA tour, you know, two putt percentage from here, you know. Yeah, that’s quite high, but and then they hold it, you know, one 2%. Okay, fine. This is a 1enter. All right, about a yard left of the hole here. And let it come back. 1%. 1%. Oh, go on. Go on. Go on. Go on. Go on. Go on. Go on. Oh, good line on it. Good line on it. Just the pace again. I’m just a bit short today with the pace. Slightly uphill. 6 in out. Yeah. Again. Again. Good positive effort. Wow. Jimber. Positive effort. Absolutely nuked it. Sloppy. Very sloppy. Comment. Right. Oh, well done. Super stroke there. That’s as good a stroke as anyone. That’s very good. Thanks, mate. Very good. That was as smooth as you get. Lovely. on greens that aren’t aren’t yet summer, you know. Yeah, that was very good. It’s nice to hear, isn’t it? My pack was a lucky just went right, didn’t it? Pick it up. Pick it up. Just went right on me. Move. I need the uh I need the claw grip obviously. Yeah, that’s the or is it talent? Have you Have you One of the two of the two. Did you ever go claw right below? I did a little bit. a little bit and then I thought who’s ever won using a claw grip and the answer at the time was nobody right so I thought well this I won’t do that so it was so wrong and why can’t I be the first the story you told it is a big he’s a big claw he started the claw yes or claw whatever and the recent winner as we speak Russell Henley is he hold out he held out well at Bay Hill didn’t he and he clawed so it’s happening Yeah. Scotty Sheffller, I suppose. He was clawing when he won the uh I was talking a few years ago. Yeah. Yeah. Talk about doing it as well. You your career? Yeah. Unbelievable. What any highlights that stand out to you or is it all just a big bubble of Mostly it’s a big bubble. The main standout individually was winning went with three times in a row. the PGA that was a big deal to come back to come back 98 and then win it in 99 was a big deal and then okay going for the so they call it the three pet or whatever they call it nowadays you know to win it three times in a row was a big deal. Yeah I that was that was the height of my Yeah. Yeah. But as a team I much preferred I much preferred winning as a member of a team. Ryder Cup. Ryder Cup. Unbelievable. Radic cup and you talk about you know highlights I suppose the opportunity was given to me in 2004 at Oakland Hills playing away from home where you know there’s 12 Americans stand up at the start and there’s 12 of Europeans and one of those 24 is going to have the opportunity of hole in the winning pot right and then it all happened to fall on my shoulders at that particular time so opportunity was given and it was about that length about that length I’ve just missed it was It’s about four four foot drafts going dinner conversation it’s now 8 foot but it was actually about four what’s it like though in a moment in the moment cuz all I can liker to it is a penalty but that golf static is it’s a penalty I mean you you stand in a goal right what is it how many yards across is it eight yards across or something it just shrinks does it it just shrinks and the goalkeeper big big keeper in there does it shrink the keeper all of a sudden looks like the Hulk I’m like, what’s what’s happening here? What? Yeah, I’ve missed many. I’ve missed a double. So, what is it like in them moment? It’s a bit like this. It’s a bit like taking a penalty. You’re walking up to the putt, right? I’ve got a putt this length. Okay. From this marker, T marker to here. That’s about the length of it right now. Yes. Yes. Hable. Yeah. But also, unfortunately, well missable. Well missable. Yeah. Any swinging here? There was a little bit left to right. I’ll I’ll just get the putter. Hold on. I like this. I’ll get my putter. So, I’m coming up to this putt, right? This is to win the RD cup. Okay. So, it’s this length. So, how does one how does one hole it from fore foot? There’s about 10 thoughts I always feel swimming through one’s head over a putt. About 10 thoughts, right? Swimming through one’s head. Is it uphill? Downhill? Is it left to right, right to left? the grain of the putt, your hands, hands or you know there’s about 10 thoughts swimming through one’s head. Dinner tonight or whatever, right? Okay. If one of those thoughts is negative, a bit like you coming up to your penalty, a bit like you come to your penalty. If one of those thoughts is negative, forget it. Forget it. I mean, he’s not they want to come in now, don’t they? Oh, of course they want to come in. Mr. Self-doubt is is there, isn’t he? Oh god, he’s on the shoulder going miss miss. You’re not that good, you know. So, how do I do it? So, what I did was I went back to what I was doing before was was talking myself into this, right? So, what I said over the ball, right? I took my practice stroke and I said, and this is what I say. This is in real time, right? This real time. I love this. I love it. This is in real time. And as if the hole’s still here and uh say the hole is there, right? There there’s a hole and this is me. Love it. So, again, missable, right? But holable. Yeah. So we go, okay, how’s this going to? So what I what I did, I was talking to myself and you can actually lip read me if you go back to 2004 2004 Ryder Cup 18th hole. I’m playing David Tom’s. Go back to any any I don’t know. Yeah, we’ll get it. Whatever. Get it. I’m talking himself. You can lip read me. I’m going I’ve done this thousands and thousands of times before. I’ve done this thousands and thousands of times before. Boom. Was that it? That was it. I was talking to myself. That’sing awesome. I was talking to myself. And it also talking to yourself helps you breathe. Yeah. Now breathing is important, right? Okay. Especially when you’re walking out for a penalty. You can imagine you get the ball at the halfway line if it’s a penalty shootout. I mean, you know, you dry up, don’t you? Of course you do. I mean, it’s horrible. Horrible. Because because you’re meant to score and I’m meant to hold this. So, the expectation is the thing that gets you, isn’t it? Absolutely. Expectation. The crowd are expecting it. I’ve got 20,000 people around. I’ve got a few million on TV the way you have on on on uh uh a penalty. That’s enormous. But that’s what I would that’s what I did. I talked myself into it. Did you back then, did you have any sports psyches or anything or was that just selftaught? I did really uh a guy Dr. Hugh Mantel uh uh from John Moore University, Liverpool was was was helping me over about a 10-year period and uh and he helped me in in getting rid of Mr. Self-doubt on the shoulder. Yeah. You know, because it comes, God, it it swings in, doesn’t it? Unbeliev Oh, it swings in that story. There’s a clip on Ronaldo when he’s over the ball free kick. He says exactly the same thing. And they do it in English for you, obviously, subtitles. And he said, “I’ve been here a thousand times. About time you producing the moment. This moment’s for you.” And all that. It’s amazing clip. It’s amazing. It’s very similar to what you see him over the ball, you know, how he stands. Yeah. And that’s his posture. You know, his posture and he’s breathing though, isn’t he? Yeah, absolutely. Breathing because he’s got to breathe before he starts his before he goes. Yeah. You see the rugby players with a conversion or a penalty in rugby, you know, let it all out and and and in golf if you let that air out, if you breathe in sort of centering, which is breathing in the wrong way, right? You know, a breathing technique, you actually have about two two and a half seconds of time before it starts you start coming back again. Start tightening up, freezing up. Yeah. You know, so you’ve got that time to hit it within that time. I love it. Two and a half seconds of freedom before you start building up again. I love the story. Anxiety. Horrible. Thank you. Yeah, that’s class. But I’m glad I hit the glove. That’s the best shot. That’s the best shot of the day. That’s the best shot of the day. I hit my glove. Let’s finish this off in style. Come on. Well, you’ve been you’ve been very good to this stage. Come on. Finish. 250 to them traps into the wind. I’m just going to b good. Do you reckon he can make it on the senior’s tour? Yeah. I want to ask that question down his fairway. Right. Go on then. Oh, lovely. That’s very good. That’s superb there. Very good. Thank you. Excellent. Yeah, that would that would work on any tour, eh? Including this one? Yeah, this would work. Oh dear. Go on. Haven’t driven well at all today. That’s been awful. Right. How are you keeping your hands so warm? Your hands are like warm. Now he Now you see now he tells us. Now he tells us we did touch upon it on the on the tea. But Jimmy in a couple years time, three years time wants to go on the senior’s tour. All right. Okay. And what you’ve seen today, yes. Can he do it? And if not, what does he need to work on? That’s a good question, isn’t it? You know, that’s a good question. Very little you have to work on. You’ve got great hands. You got good speed. When you talk about 111, 112 miles an hour uh uh uh club head speed, that is that is that’s PJ tour stuff, never mind champions tour stuff. So, you got the speed, you got the length, you know how to compete, which is key, you want to compete. Yeah. You know, you want the challenge, don’t you? I love it. That’s what you know that’s what it is. You want the challenge and you are good enough to compete. Right. The first time I played nine holes with you and I’ve been very very impressed. Okay. Very impressed with everything. The putting stroke is superb. Uh what you’ve got in your hands and what you know you know the hand uh educated hands we call it in our game. I would tell you what 3 years time what are you 47 as we still give it a bash. Give it a bash. I think I think you Well, you are. I mean, I think you’d regret it if you didn’t, wouldn’t you? Yeah. I think you’d regret it if you didn’t. And for our viewers, you know, they love the Of course. Of course, it would be fantastic for the for the viewers to to watch and to and to see you now competing against the likes of a Darren Clark or a Gimenez or Ernie Els or a a couples or a Stricker or a Well, hey, Tiger Woods now. Come on. He’s 40 now. He’s 50 in December. Yeah, I think he’s a 26 is he or something? 27. Anyway, so he’s around there around Christmas time. He’s now if he’s if he comes if he’s fit, if he wants to play whatever he does wants to do, but then the draw comes out. Okay, the draw comes out and and and uh and you’ve had a you’ve had a good day. You’re a couple under. Okay, which is ample. I mean, you know, easily achievable. And he’s had his two under. Draw comes out. Jimmy B. Tiger Wood. Stop it. Tiger Wood. Come on now. Stop viewing viewing figures. Come on now. You know, talk I mean talk about that for a vid. I mean, come on. You know, superb, you know, and and and and hey, you know, let’s let’s hope he does come out on our tour. Let’s hope he does cuz he’s the needle. He’s the needle of our of our game as he has been as he has been. He’s the Messi Ronaldo of ours all mixed into one and uh it’d be fantastic. So I think I mean amply amply good enough if you’re asking the question to me who who hopefully knows a little bit about the tour you know little bit about golf I’m telling you you are plenty good enough to compete on the legends of the champions tour plenty good enough already and that’s without the next three years of giving it load of everything you know what I mean graft you know what I mean what I wanted to ask you when they set the tournament courses up what do they set them up like for you seniors are they are they long are they is that Every every tournament is different, I suppose. Okay. We don’t play a course under 7,000 yards. Under. We don’t play a course under 7,000. No. No. So, they’re long. So, they’re long. Wow. The proper golf courses, right? That’s what I said about your hand speed. You know, your club head speed at 111 is important. Yeah. I see a bit I’m a bit Yeah. Yeah. He’s bang on his speed. Absolutely. Or Podrick hits it. Oh, he hits it. He’s flying at 320. I mean, you know. Oh, God. Yeah. Flying at 320, right? Okay. So, do you think that comes into the seniors game now? Power. Oh, god yes. Oh, god. Yes. Yeah. I mean, we’re playing Firestone, the Firestone Country Club for our for one of our majors. And that’s at 7 7,300 70. I mean, Oh, yeah. I mean, I mean, game on. Oh, and they don’t muck around with the greens. It’s PGA PGA Tour stuff. So, we’re at 1213 on the stint meter. The pins aren’t in the middle of the greens. They’re in the corners. Wow. It’s it’s a it it is game on. What’s the difference then between a PGA crunch question PGA and the seniors in? Because by the sounds of it, the course is the scoring lower. Scoring Scoring is lower. Scoring is lower. They’re more consistent. The length. The length. Yes. You’re another three or 400 yards on their courses. To us, the numbers scare me. Seven free threes. They’re lower. Oh, no. No. No. Proper golf. Oh. Oh, proper golf course. Okay. We don’t play one course under 7,000 yards. And that surprises people. That does surprise me. People think we’re playing courses at 66 67, you know. No, we’re not. We’re not. And this is why I’m I’m beginning to suffer now at 61 years old whereby my hand my club head speed is 104 103 without jackets and you know that’s I’m 15 yards short, 20 yard short where you don’t have that. You don’t have that uh issue. You are 20 yards past me, which not just in one shot, it’s the par fives. You’re 20 yards past me with a drive. You’re 15 yards with a 3-wood. That’s 35 yards on a par five. If I’m 35 If I’m 30 yard short the par five, you’re you’re on the green. Big difference. Massive. Big difference. No, it’s nice to know, mate. Hear it. No, no, no. I mean, oh, no. Plenty good enough. I’m I’ve been I’ve been I’ve been gladly gladly surprised at the standard of play. Colin, before we go, I want to thank you so much. Fantastic class. I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve enjoyed plenty of proper. Thank you so much indeed. Thank you so so much. Thank you. Superb. I’ve enjoyed this handle here. Is this me? Is it? Get following Colin on Instagram and follow his Look at that. You see there’s your there’s my D. I haven’t driven the ball well today. I’ve haven’t played well at all. But look at your three-wood there. Fivewood. Fivewood. Like just annoying me now. Further. Sorry. Sorry. Further further. Okay. It’s nice. Okay. Okay. Okay. Oh god. Help. Ah, he’s brilliant. Call him on me. M. You struck that well, didn’t you? Oh, ripped. Oh, yeah. You know us faders, you know when you fade when it goes left to right, you take. But that was like held when the straight when the club head comes in square. I tell you what. Oh, it’s lovely, isn’t it? It’s lovely. When you hit for the belf to ride a cup of your first te- ball when you absolutely smoked it. That 3wood went 310. It went 310. I’ve never hit 3wood 310 in my life. That fivewood there. That’s gone. That’s gone too. That’s a square hit. That’s what I’m saying. And adrenaline. Square. Well, adrenaline. That’ll be right. Yeah. And adrenaline. But when as a fader, you feel it, don’t you? When the club head comes in square. Oh, lovely feeling, isn’t it? Lovely feeling. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Uh Okay, come down. Right, can we start again? New night. Can we start again, please? Beautiful. Crumbs. Oh dear. Speed sticks. Yes. Is that the answer? Speed stick and some medi ball for you know all that stuff. You know, ropes, all that stuff. It’s really You do all this. Good for you. Massive. Guess the shoulders working. Yeah. Do you know what? I got really lazy the last couple of years watching a load of golf. Watching I blame you. Well, that is lazy watching you on the golf. That is lazy watching me. Um, so yeah, we got 90 yards into 95. It’s low bullet. I got a bit of a back stop there. Sorry. No, it’s terrible shot. Catch a bit. Catch a bit. Terrible shot. Ah, got spun off. Terrible shot. That’s beautiful, mate. Well, at least it’s one shot of the day. You’ve hit 25 to my one. Go on. Go on. Go on. That’s a long way up there. Yeah, it was. That was mine on the sixth hole as well. It was difficult. Oh, sorry. Can you see if I can hold it? There you go. Oh, good stroke again. Lovely stroke you’ve got. Cheers, mate. Yeah, lovely stroke now. Well done. You played well today. Finish off a birdie. You played well today. Finish on a birdie. Well, he’s got to take it again. I love it. Thank you so much. Thank you. Fantastic. Thank you. Hopefully you golf life legends enjoyed that cuz Well, I did. I did. I thoroughly enjoyed that. We must do that again. Thank you so much indeed. You go golf, baby. Come on.

I worked for Callaway for 8 years and had the pleasure of doing 6 corporate golf days with Colin. Genuinely lovely guy who got a bad rap off the press because he wasn’t happy when he played badly just like all golfers.
Yet another great match and video to watch keep it going
Monty is a legend. Really enjoyed this video.
An honest open, gentleman and legend
Carrying his tour bag is wild 😂
Colin Montgomerie, what a legend! Thoroughly enjoyed that Jim and got to say, you are a great player yourself 🙂
An absolutely outstanding video. The knowledge from Colin is incredible. Top bloke.
What a treat. What a gent. What a pleasure to watch. Can't wait for Jimmy playing the Seniors tour against the likes of Colin Montgomerie. My only observation for Jimmy is, when approaching the green, you need to be more accurate at the pin. Thanks Guys, loved it. ⛳⛳⛳
Colin is a gentleman 🙂
