While the Irish Open is always a big occasion in the sporting calendar in this country, the scenes that emerged after Rory McIlroy’s victory on Sunday evening has certainly captured the attention of golf fans around the world.

There were some incredible pictures during Sunday’s final round, both on the 18th hole of regulation and the play-off holes that followed. Quite a few overseas viewers were taken aback by the atmosphere at the Kildare venue.

The Irish Open’s status in the golfing calendar has been questioned at times, but the 2025 edition was a timely reminder of how special it can be.

Jon Rahm Makes Admission About Irish Open After LIV Golf Move

Shane Lowry summed up the magic of the Irish Open yesterday, something that is sure to have caught the eye of some of the biggest names in golf.

It has previously been suggested that an attempt should be made to attract more of the sport’s top stars to the event, with Jon Rahm someone who is keen to return to the event.

Speaking ahead of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, the two-time Irish Open champion admitted the tournament is one he misses after making the switch to LIV Golf. The Spaniard also revealed he is aiming to make a return to the tournament when his schedule allows.

I miss them as much as I ever did playing on the PGA TOUR as well. Whenever it fits on the schedule, I’m going to be here.

Same with The Irish Open. If the schedule changed and had been there every year, I’d go back, but I think I’m ready to make another appearance at the Irish Open because it’s a country that I love and a tournament that I love, and I’ve done really well.

I don’t know what it is about this whole part of the schedule and those events, right, the Spanish event, French Open, this and Dunhill, they are just really fun.

And I think because of the intensity of the season or whatever it may be, it’s passed, in a weird way, it’s almost fun to be able to play these enjoyable weeks.

Maybe that’s why I’ve always done well in these events in October.

Jon Rahm won the Irish Open in both 2017 and 2019, although he has not played in the tournament since that most recent victory.

There were a few LIV Golf players in the field for the 2025 edition, with the likes of Tyrell Hatton, Brooks Koepka, and Tom McKibbin all taking part.

It would be great to see the likes of Rahm and other big stars feature more regularly moving forward.
