CHANDLER, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) –

The Eastern Michigan University men’s golf team placed seventh at season-opening Whirlwind Collegiate Invitational, Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 8-9, at the par-72, 7,222-yard Whirlwind Golf Club at Wild Horse Pass in Chandler, Ariz. Tim Chan (Hong Kong, China/Loretto School/VCU) led the way for the Eagles as he finished tied for 25th at 5-under on a course that saw all 12 teams in the field finish under par.
 
As a team, the Eagles finished seventh at 19-under 845 (276-288-281) while host University of Southern California took the top finish at 52-under 812 (269-272-271). Arkansas State University was the runner-up at 40-under 824 (270-277-277) while the University of Texas El Paso was third at 39-under 825 (274-272-279). Overall, the Eagles’ 845 strokes stand as the fifth-lowest in program history and the best the team has shot since Feb. 25-27, 2017, when EMU recorded 841 strokes at the Loyola Intercollegiate. To get to this year’s score, EMU opened shooting a first-round 276, tying for the eighth-lowest single-round score in program history.
 
Individually, Chan finished under par for the 12th time in his career as he shot rounds of 74, 70, and 67. He was followed in the standings Rory McDonald-O’Brien (Shrewsbury, England/Shrewsbury School/USC-Aiken), who tied for 29th at 4-under 212 (69-72-71), marking the first time his career he posted back-to-back tournaments below par after shooting 5-under at the 2025 Mid-American Conference Championships.
 
Joshua Hess (Schattdorf, Switzerland/Montverde Academy (Fla.)) made his collegiate debut and tied for 33rd as the freshman finished 3-under 213 (69-73-71) and was matched by Charlie Box (Leicester, England/Wreake Valley Academy/Hutchinson CC) as the junior college transfer also shot 3-under 213 (68-73-72) in his EMU debut. Carlos Fernández Mortera (Gijon, Spain/Colegio La Corolla/Charleston (WV)) rounded out the Eagles in the field as he tied for 64th shooting 8-over 224 (70-78-76) in his EMU debut.
 
Team Notes
» The team’s opening-round 276 tied for the eighth-lowest mark in program history, equaling the same score the Eagles shot in their most recent tournament, the 2025 Mid-American Conference Championships (April 27-29, 2025).
» As a team, the 845 strokes tallied by the Eagles ranked as the fifth-lowest in program history and the lowest since the team shot 841 at the Loyola Intercollegiate, Feb. 25-27, 2017.
 
Individual Notes
» Tim Chan posted his 12th career tournament finish under par by shooting 5-under in the desert.
» Rory McDonald-O’Brien broke par for the fifth time in his career and marked the first time in his career he has done so in back-to-back events. He previously finished 5-under at the 2025 MAC Championships to end the 2024-25 season.
» Charlie Box posted two rounds at or below par in the tournament, giving him 48 such rounds in his career. He has now played 71 career rounds, meaning 67.6 percent of his rounds have finished at or below par.
» Three Eagles made their debuts in Charlie Box, Joshua Hess, and Carlos Fernández Mortera. Box and Fernández Mortera both transferred into the program after playing at Hutchison College (NJCAA) and Charleston University (NCAA Division II) each of the past two years, respectively. Hess, a freshman, made his collegiate debut as well.
 
Up Next
The Eagles return to action next week when they travel to the Chicago area to compete in the Highlands Invitational, Sept. 15-16. The two-day event will be held at Chicago Highlands Golf Club in Westchester, Ill.
