Lads, today is the day. My high school roommate that I’ve known for 25 years, who has cied for 8 years, wants to have a crack at beating me one v one. He says he’s ready. I’m not so sure. Let’s see how this one ends. How we feeling, Bruce? Sorry. How we feeling? Yeah, pretty flushy. Um, hit the first few looked fat, so I fixed that. That’s why I’m here warming up. Your first uh first match in the 1 v ones, isn’t it? Yeah, first match. And I just I want to take down the beast. First first match. First match. I want to just go straight to the top. And I’ve done me homework on this course, too. So, and you’ve done your homework on your player. I feel like if anyone knows his strength, weaknesses. Yeah, I need to stick to his weaknesses. First one v one. First one v one. I’m uh playing against my caddy Brucey. He’s my punching bag. No, Brucey. Brucey’s come to play. I think uh he he looks ready for the five times he plays a year. No, he’s like he’s strategically picked the front nine cuz majority of the holes go downwind. Nine holes is really fast pace. So doesn’t matter how good a play is if you get someone on a Especially this guy plays off. What do you play off Brucey? Tell us what you play off Brucey. I know you’ve been waiting to tell us. What you getting? 2.8. What is it? Oh, thank you. Yeah, thanks for Thanks for reminding me. Plus 2.8. He’s a good player. So, like I said before, like you never know in match play format, nine holes, you can kind of go out there. You’re only going to lose one hole. Even if you have an eight. So, all he has to do is like put a string of good holes together and he can clip me, which is fun. Seven birdies. Going to be tough if you make seven birds. I might you be me. That is that’s basically one up right now. I think it’s threewood straight at those two pines. Two pines. Should be straight down wind. Oh, cheers. Tracer J. Sorry. I like how you had to remind me. Try and hit a little bit short of him hopefully and uh wedge something close. Give him a little pressure. Oh no. Sit. I necked it. All right. Bouncing in the bunker. We’re away. Awful start. Look at him. Awful foot. Yeah, we’re off. Um, not a great start. Great start for Brucey. Not a great start for me. The fairway is 60 yards wide and I missed it with a 3-wood. Mind you, I did neck it a little bit. The wind’s left to right. I didn’t really drive it well yesterday when I was having a little practice match. Um, but I did say that I was going to hit it short of Brucey and I did. Um, and I smoked mine. Yeah, you did great. You would have nearly drove the great. I want green cam. Why did I Why did I Why did I hit three? Got 111. Got a little sandwich. Wins it. 8:00. Oh no. Oh, that looked firm. That when the bounce, you know what I mean? Yeah, it is windy out here today. It’s gusting um up over 20 uh right now. So, that’s kind of kind of makes the golf course hard regardless of where where you’re at. Um especially with like firm conditions. Um definitely makes things tough. So, Brucey’s up on the green. I’m just short of the green after that uh fairway bunker. I mean, that wasn’t a bad place to miss it. Like, anywhere left of this pin location looks really, really difficult to at least try and get up and down. So, I’m Would have been nice to be able to hit hit it on the green, but uh just short there. I’ll probably either putt or chip it there, but uh Brucey’s got a putt for birdie on the green. It’s just not much room right at that flag. No, there is actually. You know what? It’s Yeah. No, it’s just off. Not too bad. I mean, I would love to uh hit the green, give myself a chance at birdie, but yeah, I’m going to go first. But yep, but um we have a putt for for birdie from out, you know, obviously outside the range where I wanted to be. But if I can get a nice putt away here, we should uh get something up there close. Hit a good shot. Just went right on me. I got a relatively easy chip. I missed it on the good side of the hole. I think you’re a chance at it. You just chip away with some pars. You’ll have to get the pass. I on putts putts for birdie like just on the ground. Give myself the rolls. Mhm. They’ll go in. I believe they’ll go in. That’s what I need to do. Um, all right. Now, we have a 401 yard par4. Yep. Um, I think I might go similar strategy. 3-wood. I’m going to go I’m I’m going full aggression here. I’m done with it. All square through one. Um, bet you’re allowed to be in it. They know. They know you exist. I’m just going to poke this down the left side. There’s a dark tree down there. I’m going to hit it at wedge on the ground from there. [Music] Sick. Sit down, dude. I think you’re okay there, buddy. Wait, it just sits. It just gets right of that trunk. I think you’re golden. It’s like in the It’s in the trees. Um, golf courses are always tough when you play play them for like kind of the first or second time. Trying to find the lines are hard. I always find playing golf courses either for the first time or the second time are always tough to find your lines and trust the lines that you have. I mean, obviously I was trying to go at that bunker over there and you just look down the right and it looks like there’s nothing there. So, I mean, obviously you kind of after you play a couple of times you get used to it, right? Yeah, 100%. There is a little pond over on the right. Yeah. Which was in play for me. That’s why I kind of snuck it down the left. Jay would have carried it easily with the Santa hit. I don’t hit the center too often. Do you drink anything during um I’ve got a spark right now? Yeah. Okay. I’m all right. Yeah, that’ll see a little pond over on the right. But there is plenty of room if you hit it long enough. Oh, yeah. There is actually. Yeah. Okay. I’m short. And you’re Okay. Yep. You’re up there stuck under the tree. That’s all right. We’ll work something. I got 165. Get this jumper up in the air and this is this should be plenty of club. That looks nice, bro. Um I need to match some stuff up here because he’s deadly with a wedge in his hand. But he’s long enough now to uh get up close to the green. So yeah, these downwind holes are treating me nicely right now cuz I can get that 3-wood out there on these 400 y. Dude, that 3-wood goes forever, too. Yeah, it’s fine. It may have a little hairline fracture in the top of it. It may be illegal, but no one’s checked it. USGA hasn’t come and checked it yet. Wow, what a nice drive there, Bruce. Cheers, bro. Both on the fairway. Jay on the right side. Good angle. I’m on a little further up on the left, but I got 267, which is like I mean, you’ve got at least 40 yards shorter than that. You might have 220 iron in your iron in your hand. May have a little bit of tree trouble, but we’ll see. 7 straight down wind. Come on, wind. Come on. He was just left of the green there. I mean, you’re in perfect position going up the hill, chipping up the hill back into into that pin location. Yeah, I think I think yours kind of sat on the slope there. Yeah, it’ll be interesting to see where it is. But one of us needs to birdie coming up. Yeah, not easy. Oh, man. Like, if you go long, it’s terrible. Yeah, I know. That’s why I tried to commit to right rather than long long and I pull it. I mean, that’s great. Little longer the green. Not too bad. I mean, it’s Brucey’s shots a lot easier, I feel like, if you’re taking rough shots than mine, cuz mine kind of goes up the hill and then snaps left and right pretty quick. So, I love watching try get something in there over a chip shot cuz you’ll see, look at his eyes. It’s just unbelievable. He just gets so creative. He’s gets in the zone. He doesn’t even know it, I don’t think. He just sees it so mint. And then his practice, his process was just unbelievable with us. [Music] That was not far from releasing to the hole. How far short is that? That’s 8 to 9 ft. Kind of landed in exactly the right spot. The wind just little bit of uh to him and said it soft, but that was little bit slower than the course that we played yesterday. So, thought that was going to run out. Actually hit my spot. Um, and left myself 8 9 ft. As Brucey said, Brucey’s got the upper hand right now. I got to hold that. But what do I want to do here? I’ve got an opportunity. A good chip will go in the hole. And there’s no there’s no reason to put the foot off the cast when you got the lead. Just put put it down even more if anything. shot, bros. I’m going to have to I’m going to have to make a putt that I know it’s close, but we are playing match play. Slow. Actually quite good. Yeah. All right, Bruce, knock her in. one over which means that he’s two up. Two up for Bruce through three. Only six to play. These downwind holes are playing in my favor. Putting a governor on Jason’s length. When are we turning into it? Not for a while. We got to go. I’m just going to I’m just going to mentally say that they’re all downwind. Yeah. Tough. You left it perfectly. Yeah, I know. Cuz if you hit it if you hit it long, it’s gone. Yeah, it’s no good. I kind of had to flirt it with short, though. It wasn’t an easy shot. Um cuz I probably only cleared the water by 5 yards. Yeah, but you left yourself in a perfect spot, which was great. So, two up, Brucey. Come on. Got my work cut out for me. All right, Bruce. 204. It’s downwind. I got two. Yeah. 202 I’m going to leave the short flag. Um I don’t know how hard they’re bouncing on the greens cuz I I’m going to watch him which is great because I’ll be able to get a gauge on how hard the green’s going to bounce. So right now it’s like 202 to the pin. The wind is 45 down, but it’s gusting to 20. So let’s just say it’s probably 10 to 12 behind the wind there. So that takes it down to 190. We got we got to settle on a bounce. Oh, Bruce. That’s quite nice. Got Luke. Oh, it looked like he hit about a seven iron there. So, I’m going to I’m going to kind of roast a seven iron out there right now. Gary. Wang. Terry shot Jake. Middle of the drain. Middle of the green. Don’t think I got the full purchase on the wind there. Kind of looked like it felt like it died a little bit. I’m absolutely stoked with that. Middle of the green. It’s 204 I think it was. Is it 7 downwind? And it did not look like you wanted to go long. So middle of the green. Two pretty good shots. Yeah. Using his caddyy mind. He’s got the he’s got the lead right now. That’s why he’s just like playing the correct shots. And Brucey does do that a lot, which is good. So, well, par 3 is at 200 y. I don’t think you really need to try and stiff them. And it’ll be interesting to see how far they are when you get up there. I don’t I think we’ve got I think Yeah, I think we got a little bit of little bit of distance between us. That’s fine. Um, which is fine though. Like Brucey said, like you do not want to go long here because then you’re chipping downhill back to that pin. Wind is helping a little bit with that, but there’s you’d rather have a putt than a than a chip. And there’s always an outside chance of holding a 35 footer. You know what I mean? Two good two good solid shots. Like I I got to settle the settle the ship here a little bit and try and uh get some good uh stuff going. Lights left up. Oh, it’s always cracking. Again, I’m hanging on to my trusty 3-wood. all these downwind holes in the right traps, but I believe I should be fine. JD smoked it down there in the left rifle with a great angle to that flag. Okay, yours is not too bad, man. Like, that’s fine there. Yeah, I nearly got away with it, honestly. I mean, they’re still buriable. Yeah, exactly. Out of there. Exactly right. Oh, boy. No, she’s fine. I’ll make it work. I’ll make it work. What have I got? He has a great attitude. That is not a great great lie. Not a great lie here for Bruce. Yeah, it’s just a footprint that someone’s half raked over. I think you can still get on it. Yeah, I just got to hit down. Obviously got to catch it super clean. It’s the only way. I should have hit a better shot than that. My worst shot should have been better. No, my worst shot should have been better than that. actually got that. But it’s all good. I just needed it around the grain a little better. I mean, all good. Not enough credit there. He hit a That was a really difficult shot that he had cuz I’m like, you have to He’s trying to pinch a pitching wedge or a 52 over a lip, tight lip, bad lie. It’s just really It’s one of the hardest shots because you got a such an a lofted club that no matter what it wants to do, it will always want to dig on a lofted club. So it’s it’s really hard what he just did. I’m going to listen to NovakJovich. I think everyone gets headless and emotional and whatever, but it’s how fast you get out of that state. Get back into flow state, whatever that is. Oh, you’re flowing. So grooves are clean. Yeah. Little bit of breathing techniques that will help me. I might just take a little bit extra time. Walk up to the green here. Get back to where I should be cuz that last one just that got me a little bit. I’m going to take a walk. See you, Bruce. He’s got he’s got an outside chance of getting up and down right now. And I’ve got a good opportunity to try and make birdie. I got to start seeing the the the landing and the rolling of of the shots just because the greens are a little bit softer and a little bit slower than what I was playing yesterday. That’s so it kind of it can kind of mess with your feel a little bit. So Brucey’s still in the driver’s seat right now. If he can get up and down and I don’t get up and down, then he’s kind of, you know, got out of jail there. So he’s one thing about Brucey, he’s always going to grind. Everyone calm down. Can never count out an opponent. Brucey’s struggling to make a par here. He’s got a chip from uh about 15 20 paces uh just off the green on the rough. So I’m here for one. I’ve got about 50 or so yards out of the rough. It’s going to kind of trundle. So, I got to kind of match it right now and just get the right uh distance on this. Not bad. Yeah. Um I probably It looks like about 8 to 10 ft somewhere in that region. Um need to land it just over that slope there. But regardless, got a good pup bird 30 birdie. Pretty simple chip. So, I’m going to try and try and do something silly cuz he’s thinking he’s going to get back in this game. But I just need to put a stop to that quick. Any silly thoughts? Come on. Should have had a ped at worst. probably going to be a concession here. That’s good. Don’t want I don’t want to let him putt it. That means I made a birdie. Yes. I don’t want to give him I’m going to put it just a concession. The chance. Was it a concession? That was a concession. So, in match play rules, I’ve made the bird down and I’m back to one down. So, I’m going to put it anyway. Yeah. Nice birding. [Music] Oh no. Stroke play be back to square. Oh no. How crazy is that? So this is a perfect example of why match play so cool, especially in this situation. Right. So I’ve made a bogey. Bruce He was So I was one over through three holes or four holes and Brucey was one under through four holes. We got to the fifth hole. I made birdie. Bruce made bogey. We would be back to kind of level, right? And in stroke play. But match play, what’s so unique about it is it doesn’t matter. Like you could have an eight and if you’re playing match play right now, he’s got a one one up lead. So that’s what’s so unique about match play. One up, four to go. Can he hang on? Oh no. Camera, turn that off. Oh, just at least give yourself a putt for par. Brucey. Yeah, but no, I just needed a better I know I compounded two bad shots in a row. Brucey at his best. doesn’t do that. He hits one of those two mint and then goes to work on the green. But yeah, it’s all right. You know what I mean? And I was saying this before, this is why match play so great because you could catch someone off on a on a on a average day or a good day. Even if you if the person’s having a good day, that person may play better than you. So, like it’s just makes things hard as uh traffic goes by for the construction that they they look like they’re building homes out here, which is fantastic. I mean, what a golf course to play at uh if you’re a member here. So, and to and to live on. It’s interesting to see what they do here. Uh uh thank you Jake Peterson uh for organizing this uh out here at Northstar Golf Club. Got Sunbury, Ohio. This is just pure except for the dirt in the eye. Okay, so Oh, here comes this is where I come to play. Into the wind holes is where Well, it’s more crosswind. I feel like crosswind is my strength. Downwind is where I really excel at. Okay, 32. There we go. These homes are going to look amazing out here. Northstar’s like when the first time I I came in, Dash used to play PJ Junior League out here and none of this was uh developed yet. Obviously, they’re just starting development out here. So, the homes out here are going to be fantastic. I’m going to uh hit a little fly to Driver. birdie. Look like it nearly killed that bird. The fairways are are massive here at Northstar and I keep for some reason missing them. They’re firmer so they play a little shorter like that last if I turn a three-wood over or drive if I hit it. That was in that was that was running in the boonies. You think so? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. cuz it’s dry and it leads that way. I mean, to be honest, I I think I might be in the boonies. Oh, no. I’m fine. Like I I Once again, you’re trying to find lines on a on a new golf course is uh is always tough, but like you play it a couple of times, you should be able to recognize where you need to go. All righty. Oh, wow. What a tough shot. Oh my goodness. Hard shot. J’s rock. Tough shot. This is the club. I’m just going to hit a low one. Yo. Oh, dude. What a golf shot. Such a good shot. Oh no. The problem that I’ve got going on right now is I’m testing new irons and usually my old clubs in first cut would spin and I just don’t know what it’s going to do. the shots that I’ve hit in the past with oh well sorry with these new clubs every single time they’ve come out of the first cut they’ve flown. So what do I tr I don’t know what to trust. I’ll I’ll trust that it’s not going to fly and that it’s going to spin correctly. Please I’ll let you know once once I hit it. I’ll either be I’ll either tell it to go or or sit down. Um, okay. 153. We got at least 20 20 a wind there right now. So, I got to kind of muscle an eight iron there right now. Dead at it. SP shot. Just short. Did spin. Yeah. Hit it dead spot. So, that was that was a hard shot. Well, I didn’t know if it was going to fly or not out of here. Well, that was difficult cuz it was dry and it’s into the wind. So, you need to get the spin right. You hear that? Absolutely funny. Chip it. Oo. Back in the grain. Hello. I’ll wake you up in the morning or the afternoon. Going to have to kind of half jam on this a little bit just because it’s usually bent grass doesn’t really typically have a like grain, but this seems like it wants to. Sometimes it kind of gets like this and it it’ll act like grain. So, I’m going to try and hit this a little bit lower. Get something rolling up there. Mis hit it. Oh y you don’t need to get me Christmas present now. Oh well if I give you this uh match you’re not getting one. This is a sweet hole. I had 185 in the breeze and they’ve got another 40 yards of green and it’s not good oite. That’s a wild hole uphill left to right. I left it in a perfect spot, honestly. And I got a crate chance. That’s good there. Once again, um grinding hasn’t been a great day, but uh for the performance, but uh I got to I got to do something about that. Got to hold this part. Nice. Great. Basically, good. Great balls there, boys. Why do I Why do I Why am I doing that? Um, like Brucey’s over there stretch free and I’m sitting there grinding my uh tail off to try and keep a uh keep him within arms length right now. Par five, par three, par four finish. He’s one up. Free to play, baby. Free to play. I need to take advantage of my length on this par five next hole. So, try and get it back to square and then who knows what happens. Let’s do it. This is a uh very very long par five. I need to hit this low little bullet just to get up there. Um if I can do that then that that would be great. Get at least a three in my hand. I know that it’s long. So, Bruce is strong. Brucey, yes, Ryan. I think that’s pretty good. Yeah, I can’t hit 275, but if I could get it to do 275, I’d have 275 in. I can’t do that. So, there’s plenty of ways to win this hole. I’m going to do it my way. Straight down wind here. Oh, Brucey Tracer Bruce. I might go at it now. No, this is a long time. I think we’ve butchered that one there, Tan. I think I like fastpaced nine holes match play. Yeah, it’s good. Well, like I we were talking about before that uh it doesn’t matter the skill level. Like if you play good, like you can you can clip some clip some people out of here, which is good. Plus, we’re on a golf course. It’s 80° in in Ohio currently. Little breezy, but Northstar’s presenting fantastic right now. So, it’s uh it’s lovely to be here again. Yeah, it’s sweet. Brucey Brucy might be a member here one day, right? Yeah. You know what? I’m liking what I see here. You deserve it. I do deserve it. If this course keeps treating me like this, I’ll I’ll join up today. Cuz I’ve hit me straps. Oh, I’m I’m redlining. Look at that. Yeah, I think if it was if there was no wind, it still it played quite long, right? So, um, yeah, we got, uh, I’m on the kind of front right of the pin or the green there. Brucey’s in the right rough. Um, he has to get up and down. I have to get up and down. So, we got a little back and forth. He’s one up uh, with two to play. He’s given me a run for my money today. The big fella, I mean, he is so sneaky good. Brucey is such a good player. I mean, we grew up together. We haven’t talked about that. We were meant to talk about that, but I was just too much in the zone to bring that up. He was he was in the zone. He was my roommate in high school. Uh the golf academy that we went together. Um and he was a really solid player when we were in high school. So, he was actually better than me when when we first got to school. So, and he would never say that, but uh he was a very very he was a good player. He great short game. um kind of like wasn’t it didn’t have a like enough distance back then. Hits it far enough now, but he’s uh his attitude is what gets him over the line. So, uh let’s see how it goes. I mean, we got two holes left. I’m hoping to get this one up and down. He’s hoping to get it up and down. See how it goes. If I hit this lower into the fringe and pop it up, run it. I like that more than what I’m seeing otherwise cuz it’s downwind as well. So, we went to Coralin um was the first golf academy and then Hills uh International was the second golf academy that we went to together and um fun days. Fun days. Roman, no uh no stress back then. Now it’s he’s just I’m his stress on the golf course. So, ninth hole all square. Brucey’s played some great golf. Uh the last two holes he has lipped out for Eagle. Unfortunately missed his sixfooter to go two up with two holes play. Big hole here. Oh, what a stay out of it, Brucey. Jay, what a shot. I wanted to admire. So, man, did you get it? Yeah, dude. You have to I mean, for the greens keeper sake, I mean, they wake up super early every single day to prep the golf course. Um, you know, just try and do your best job to uh look after the look after the golf course best you can. So, yeah. I um I thought you were going to cough your first loss today. And it looks like you might just squeak it out. I might squeak it out. I don’t know. I mean, Brucey’s got to he’s got to get this up and down like and if he if he does, then I got to hold that putt.
