Golf clubs are always claiming some unique characteristic that makes them stand out from the crowd, which is understandable when you consider that there are around 3,000 courses dotted throughout Great Britain alone.
But there can be only one highest layout, the venue that reaches closer to the sky more than any other.
Located just 15 miles south of Hadrian’s Wall in the North Pennines, Alston Moor Golf Club is officially the highest in England, sitting at 1,476 feet above sea level, with its ten greens and 18 tees offering a distinctive test in its own right.
Herefordshire’s Kington Golf Club has a lot to make it stand out – including a lack of bunkers – but it rests at 1,284 feet above sea level at its peak, which is the highest of any full 18-hole golf course in England.
But those fall short of Leadhills Golf Club in Scotland. You might assume that such a place is found in the Highlands, but in actual fact this layout (sitting at 1,500 feet above sea level) is located in South Lanarkshire on the outskirts of a village that is the second highest north of the border.
What is The Highest Golf Course in Britain?
However, even that falls narrowly short of West Monmouthshire Golf Club in Wales, which is confirmed to be the highest golf course in Great Britain.
Well, specifically that accolade belongs to its 14th tee, which is placed around 1,518 feet above sea level.
Designed by the great and influential Scotsman Ben Sayers, the course was opened for play in 1906 and overlooks the Brecon Beacons, boasting spectacular vistas of the surrounding countryside.
As one reviewer on Golfshake noted: “Wow! The views from this course are just incredible – and you’re playing the highest tee in the UK.”
That 14th is a par 4 of 385 yards from the back tee, which features a ditch short of the green that ensures that golfers must be careful when choosing their strategy on how to tackle it. You can watch a full flyover of the hole by clicking here.
People have drawn up all manners of lists of golf courses that they most want to play, but if you’re someone who appreciates something a little different, playing from the highest tee in Britain qualifies as just that and is definitely an experience to remember.
