SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – Some competitors achieved their dreams while others fell short on Sunday in the Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier at Whistling Straits, the dramatic 36-hole golf destination on the shore of Lake Michigan.
While plenty of adults – including Charles Barkley, who occasionally turns up at Whistling Straits for a round of golf – tried their hand at the testing Straits and Irish courses, 112 junior golfers ages 7 to 15 filled the practice facility, chasing a spot in the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club next April.
There were smiles and tears and high-fives and hugs and more than a few vows to come back next year.

Two of Sunday’s eight winners, 11-year-old Lucy Wiertel of Oswego, Ill., and 12-year-old Texas Terry of Manor, Texas, are repeat National Finalists. Each made it to Augusta two years ago – Wiertel from Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio, and Terry from TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill., – with Terry winning the Boys 10-11 division in the 2024 National Finals.
Wiertel’s advancement in the Girls 10-11 division was perhaps the most dramatic at Whistling Straits. Thanks to her putting, she overcame an 18-point deficit to tie Allister Amedio of Mokena, Ill., at 115 points. Then, in a tiebreaker, Wiertel sank a center-cut 15-footer to advance when Amedio just missed matching her.
“I was feeling excited and nervous at the same time, and happy to be in that position,” Wiertel said of standing over the extra putt. “My first 15-footer, it was on the edge of the cup. I thought it was going to fall in. Second time I aimed dead middle with a lot more pace.”
The matchup wasn’t unique. Wiertel and Amedio, from suburban Chicago towns about 20 miles apart, have gone head-to-head and developed a friendship through their rivalry.

“Either way, win or lose, I was going to be proud,” said Wiertel.
Wiertel and Terry, the other repeat National Finalist, were the only division winners who didn’t also win an individual skill competition, though Terry was similarly successful in putting, sinking his first two putts to pile up 50 points before coming up short on his third putt. His total score of 143 points was the best in the Boys 12-13 division a year after he didn’t advance from the local qualifier.
“That was a tough feeling, because you get to watch the entire year of not being able to go back,” Terry said. “I was really disappointed. I trained harder than ever just to get back.”
Wiertel and Terry will have local knowledge returning to Augusta, to which Terry said, “I know what the chip and the putts are like, so in preparing again for it, I’ll try to do as well as I did last time. I can prepare differently this time.”
And when he gets there, perhaps he will run into his idol, Scottie Scheffler, a two-time Masters champion.
“If he can do it, I can too,” said Terry, who was watching early players chip and putt to understand the breaks on the green three hours before he participated.
Carter Bird of Hinsdale, Ill., 14, advanced on his sixth attempt. Winning the Boys 14-15 division more than made up for previously getting to the regional stage and not advancing.
A high school freshman at Benet Academy who also plays hockey, he has overcome a broken leg on two occasions but has yet to give up the rough-and-tumble sport for golf.
“It’s always fun, especially when you get a big hit,” said Bird, a diminutive right wing.
I was really nervous coming into this, but now I’m really excited. It means a lot. I really wanted to go to Augusta.
Hallie Fisch
Gabriella Collelo of Pinehurst, N.C., was a big winner in the Girls 14-15 division, piling up 145 points and advancing in her fifth attempt.
“I’m going to be really nervous, but it’ll be so exciting at the same time,” Collelo said of going to Augusta.
Patricia Kittivat of Schaumburg, Ill., sank two of her three putts, including the 30-footer, to cap her comeback victory over Viviana Reincke of West Dundee, Ill., in the Girls 7-9 age group.

“My chipping wasn’t that good, but I saved it with my putts,” Kittivat, 9, said. “I look at the flag when I putt. It was nice (to sink the 30-footer).”
A pair of putts within “gimme” range lifted Hallie Fisch of Suamico, Wis., to victory over Angelina Chang of Aurora, Ontario, in the Girls 12-13 competition. A Nelly Korda fan, Fisch had tried Drive, Chip and Putt three years before succeeding.
“I was really nervous coming into this, but now I’m really excited,” Fisch said. “It means a lot. I really wanted to go to Augusta.”
Vihaan Patel of Streamwood, Ill., is a man of few words, but the 11-year-old winner of the Boys 10-11 age group was spot on when asked what it would be like riding down Magnolia Lane the morning of next year’s National Finals.
“It’ll be cool,” Patel said, adding that lunch, hopefully pizza, would be a fine way to celebrate the achievement.
Andrew Brown of St. Louis, Mo., edged Oliver Warren of Cary, Ill., by six points in the Boys 7-9 competition. The difference came in the putting competition as Brown outscored Warren in that skill, 60 points to 45 points.
The day’s first winner, Brown showed wisdom beyond his 9 years when he summed up his outlook toward his trip to Augusta aptly: “Try your best and have fun.”

About the Finalists
Andrew Brown of St. Louis may play more soccer than golf, but he already thinks like Scottie Scheffler, his favorite golfer.
“He’s won a lot of majors and he positions the ball really nice,” Brown, the Boys 7-9 age group winner, said. “I try to do that.”
Brown first had a club in his hand – plastic and two-sided – when he was 2 years old.
“We figured out he was left-handed,” said Brown’s father Roger. By 3 years old, Andrew was tagging along with his dad to St. Louis Country Club to hit real golf balls.

Patricia Kittivat’s introduction to golf was like that of so many younger siblings: tagging along when older brothers Peyton and Patrick played the game.
“I want to play golf, too,” her father Tony recalled her saying. A starter set of clubs later, she was on the range.
Patricia said her older brothers are better, but the 9-year-old from Schaumburg, Ill., outdid them by winning her Drive, Chip and Putt age group. Neither of her brothers have qualified.
Peyton, 17, has aged out of the competition, but Patrick, 14, has one more chance.

Vihaan Patel of Streamwood, Ill., built a 13-point lead through driving and chipping and hung on to beat Myles Branta of Pewaukee, Wis., by three points.
“I came here hoping to get top-three,” said Patel, a first-time Drive, Chip and Putt participant.
A mathematics whiz, Patel said he likes the discipline of that subject because of the different concepts within it. One of those is progressions, and he put that concept on display by hitting a longer drive each time he swung, going from about 165 yards to 185 to 215 across his three attempts.

Lucy Wiertel of Oswego, Ill., finished ninth on her first trip to the National Finals in 2024 as a 9-year-old. She thinks that experience will serve her well on the return trip, this time in the Girls 10-11 division.
“This year, I’ll be able to be more confident,” Wiertel said after advancing in a tiebreaker. “I’ll know what’s going to happen. The first time, it was my dream my whole life. I’ve always wanted to make it to Augusta, and it happened.
“My drives, I faded them, and on the right side it’s uphill. This time, I’ll make sure I draw the ball on the left side, and I’ll win!”
Wiertel’s dad Jason will caddie for her, duplicating his day job. Jason Wiertel, a former teacher, is PGA Tour player Luke Clanton’s caddie, a partnership that came about when Lucy suggested it at the 2022 North and South Amateur.

In the spring of 2024, everything about Augusta National wowed Texas Terry, of Manor, Texas.
“My favorite part was just being there, because it’s a step above every other golf course in the world,” said Terry. “It’s my dream since I went there just to get back to that amazing place. I’m so excited that I get to go back.
“I was super nervous (at Augusta), but seeing J.T. Milner (Southwest PGA section junior golf manager) was amazing. Since I knew him, I was at ease.”

Amazingly, Hallie Fisch of Suamico, Wis., first had a golf club in her hands in her front yard when she was 1 1/2 years old – when she began to walk. She has rarely not had one in her hands since.
“I just rode along in the cart with my dad at first,” said Fisch, a Drive, Chip and Putt regional winner on her fourth try. This was her first time reaching the penultimate stage of qualifying, and that fueled her nervousness, she said.
Fisch has watched the Masters and Drive, Chip and Putt on television, and now she’ll be on the screen. It could make her nervous again, at least for a moment.
“I don’t like being in front of the cameras, but I’m going to be excited to go,” Fisch said. “This might be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

A 1-handicapper who plays out of Edgewood Valley Country Club near his Hinsdale, Ill., home, Carter Bird edged Ledius Felipe, a fellow Chicago-area player, by nine points in the Boys 14-15 age group. Bird won the overall title on the strength of three drives longer than 260 yards, whereas one of Felipe’s was off the grid and scored no points.
“Driving, I feel the most confident,” said Bird, who also holed one of his three chips after switching wedges before the shot. “I’d never hit that shot before, but I was trying something new because the chip was very long.”
He said his second putt was poor because nerves got to him, and that nerves “will be a lot higher” when he steps on Augusta National’s 18th green. When he does, his grandfather, Tony Benard, will be on his bag.

Gabriella Collelo might want to be a geographer when she grows up. She has lived and played golf in Las Vegas, now lives in Pinehurst, N.C., and soon will be moving with her family to Florida. Golf is the common denominator.
She did not advance from Drive, Chip and Putt regionals in the past – third place was her previous best – and used that as a motivator this time.
“I was really nervous the whole day, but you take deep breaths. You just listen to the birds,” Collelo said. “It’s what I do.”
