Walworth, N.Y. (WHAM) — Dozens of residents gathered at a packed Walworth Town Board meeting Monday to express their concerns over a proposal to redevelop part of the Blue Heron Hills Golf Club.
The plan, submitted by Winward Lake Homes LLC, aims to build 47 single-family homes on more than 200 acres of the property, reducing the golf course from 18 holes to nine. The town has stalled the application, stating it will undergo further review.
Many homeowners and community members are opposing the proposal, emphasizing the importance of the golf course to the community’s identity.

“I understand the sentiment and people saying that it’s his property, he can do what he pleases,” said Ricky Howcroft, who lives on the golf course.
“I would ask people to step back and put themselves in our shoes,” Howcroft continued. “This is what our community is known for. Quiet, private, recreational land is important, and unfortunately, once you develop one hole, it’s over.”
Kevin Courteau, another resident, shared his personal connection to the course.
“I would have never considered or known about Gananda if it hadn’t been for this jewel of a golf course,” he said. “I just retired this year, I’m now playing golf five days a week. I was going to be happy here for the rest of my life. What am I going to do now?”
A letter of intent from the project engineer states that the proposal is designed to meet local housing demands and support the town’s long-term goals to enhance housing availability.
The plan remains under review, and it is unclear when a decision will be made.
