Alberta’s only regulated online gambling website. their final season in this stadium when they got to get him to send me the link so I can check in. Well, a magnificent Monday afternoon. How are you? And welcome to the Jason Greger Show, Sports 1440, Sports 1440.ca, as well as uh YouTube, Facebook, X, and Instagram. Thanks for listening. Thanks for uh watching the show. And man, do we have a lot to discuss on the show today. It was an unreal weekend in sports. It didn’t matter what what sport. If you’re a if you’re a CFL fan, you’re an Elks fan. What a game. Biggest crowd of the year, biggest crowd in many years in Edmonton. And I would argue that is one of the biggest wins in franchise history in the last decade. When you consider just kind of where the franchise is at, right? Obviously under new owner Larry Thompson. You know, they’re turning around at Chris Morris, Ed Hery, but you need some wins. And now they’ve won four of their last five. They beat the Calgary Stampeders in the rematch. Pretty convincing victory. The defense played great, especially after the first two offensive series by Calgary. They only allowed nine points the rest of the game. They were really good. Vernon Adams Jr. only completed 47% of his passes after the first two series. He was four for six in the first two series. Had a touchdown. Of course, they had the one big pass of 55 yards and and a field goal. But after that, the D shut them down. Offensively, Rankin, what a game. 204 yards rushing at a 90 yarder. First 90 yard touchdown run in the CFL this year. First one for an Edmonton player since 1977. Woo. It’s good stuff, man. I love it. Also, you had uh defensively four sacks from the defensive line. The D line had six sacks combined in the first 11 games from defensive linemen alone and uh they got basically 75% of that done in the in the game against Calgary who’s got a team that doesn’t give up a ton of sacks. So it was impressive. No Robbie Smith, no Jake Sa didn’t matter. And Szna is likely not coming back this year. And you know at this point you kind of wonder, you know, will they bring him back next year? Who knows? We’ll see. But, you know, the the Dline got it done. They didn’t give up many big plays after that. Uh, the offensive line opened up some holes. I thought Rankin just ran the ball. He had some unreal runs with some great spin moves down the field. Cody Fardo passed when he needed to, right? Like the offense wasn’t they they probably had more consistent games, but they made some big plays when they needed them. Um the the one thing and we’ll get to it was to me the they’re still a little too cautious on second and long. They were perfect three for three conversions on second down of 1 to three yards. They’re perfect four for four on second down conversions from four to six yards. They were only three of 13 on second and uh seven or longer. And if you look at it, they completed passes, but often it’d be second and nine, second and 10, second 11, and they’re th throwing a three or four yard pass. Why? The three times they pass the ball downfield over 10 yards in the air, guess what? Three for three on second down conversions. Sometimes you got to you got to go for it. Including the uh touchdown for uh Julian Grant. That was on second and 11 and they found him in the end zone. So, it’s a work in progress. So, one area if I’m going to critique something, that’s what I’m going to critique. I’d like him to be a little bit more aggressive every now and then on second down. Go down the field a little bit. You’re not going to complete the pass, fine, but completing a three- yard pass when it’s second and eight does really nothing other than gaining three yards. It’s all it does. So, we will uh um talk about that. Uh and and what a what a race in the CFL now. The Elks and the Lion. They’re only one game back of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Western Conference. You can’t say the Bombers are uh are smooth sailing to get in. Not at all. Lions and Elks are five and seven. Bombers are six and six. Then you go to the crossover. Right now, both BC and Edmonton are ahead of Toronto and Ottawa, but only by a game. And remember, in the crossover, you got to be ahead of them in points. If you’re tied, it automatically goes to the Eastern team. And if you look at the at the remaining schedule for for all of these teams, it’s it’s pretty even, man. It’s pretty even. So, you know, I love it. It’s awesome. You look at uh Winnipeg plays at Hamilton at Ottawa. Then they’re Hamilton again. Then they’ve got a road game right here in Edmonton. And then Saskatchewan, Montreal, BC, they actually have four home games against Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, and the Elks. And uh then they have uh road games in Calgary and Saskatchewan. The Elks have back-to-back road games here. Toronto this weekend, then Hamilton the next one. Then they got Saskatchewan at home, then a buy, then Winnipeg at home in DC, and uh finish up at home to Calgary. So, hey, they they and Toronto and Ottawa. Hey, they Edmonton plays Toronto. Um Winnipeg plays Ottawa, BC plays Ottawa and Toronto. It’s going to be fun to to just look at the potential playoff opportunities here. But the Elks, they’re in the conversation now. That can change in one week if if all of a sudden they lose and all the other teams win. So now they can’t all win theoretically. I know because there’s five other teams, but you know what I’m saying. So it’ll make it fun. It’ll be good. Also, um we got some uh MLB to discuss. Jay’s pitching was actually really good on the weekend in New York. They didn’t give up very much. They lost the game Sunday. They gave up three hits. Now, I know one was a three-run shot in the first inning, unfortunately for for Sherzer, but they pitched pretty well. the Jays just couldn’t cash in. They were terrible with runners in scoring position. Doesn’t happen very often. So, I don’t think it was a bad weekend for them. I know New York gained uh one game in the standings. Now, they got another day off and they will uh continue on. And it should be a fun September in MLB to see to see where it’s going to go. You have uh the updated standings for the Jays. They’re two games up on the Yankees. They’re three and a half up on the Red Sox. They are uh half a game ahead of Detroit for first in the American League. So that’s awesome. You also, if you’re a tennis fan, man, that Alcarez kid, he is uh he’s pretty good. Let’s just uh let’s just call a spade a spade there. He is he’s already got six majors. He is the youngest player to have six majors. He’s only 22 years of age. him and S have now won the last eight majors. The last two years it’s been either one of them winning. Pretty damn impressive. And you look at it from, do you remember from basically 2004 until like 2022, the big three, like that’s that’s like an 18-year period. The big three won every major except um I think it’s like 12. And the US Open, funny enough, was the one where lots of other guys, Delpatro won, Murray won one, Steelich won. Uh, uh, Stan the man Winka won one. He actually won. Uh, um, he had a little run there of three years from 14 to 16. I think he won three majors. Wasn’t bad, but and then Theme and Medvidev. So, the the US Opens actually being where the big three didn’t win as often, but God, they dominated for a long time. And now, Alcarez and Center right now, it looks like it’s those two. Can anyone else push him? We’ll see. Felix played really well. I loved watching that match, man. It was unreal, but ultimately couldn’t get it done. And Alcarez was just too good yesterday. He looked fantastic. And when you consider that he’s already got six and you know, you look at Yokovic who is um obviously what is he 38 years of age. He’s won 24. So he’s 18 ahead. Alcris is only 22. Let’s say for the next decade, which is I know is a big if. He wins two a year for a decade, which is still hard. Don’t get like really hard, but it’s not out of this world. Then he would be ahead. He’d do it for nine years. He’d be tied. So, and he’d only be 31. Now, I’d love to see the Joker win another one, but I think it’s going to be hard with these two young kids and Alcarez and S right now. So, and and it’d be great if Felix could find a way to uh to get in to win one, but it’s pretty dominant. If you’re a tennis fan, you go to the NFL and did we just see the best game of the year on the first Sunday nighter of the year? It’s going to be really hard to beat that game. Now, I know Ravens, you don’t love the the outcome. I get it. But for pure entertainment value, that was a phenomenal game. And I’m going to say it right now. today. Not best careers, but the two best quarterbacks I think in the NFL today played last night headto-head. Conor Allen, would you agree? Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson today are the best. Don’t have the best career. That’s obviously Pat Mahomes. But right now, today the two best quarterbacks would be these two. Yeah, I would agree with you on that one. You know, especially after what Joe Burrow did yesterday against the Browns. Even without that, those two guys would be like the top three for me. But yeah, they were unbelievable. That was such good football and I felt that pain that the Ravens had at the end of the game cuz I’ve seen Mahomes do it to my Chargers 100 times. You can’t stop him. Like he was locked in. It was just inevitable that they were going to drive the field and finish there. It was such a good game. Hey, just wait a second. Who fixed your camera? This is unbelievable. Do I look good? No, but it’s clear. Look at the color on it. Did you say no? Yeah. No. No. You still look great. But you look clear. Oh, yeah. You see that? That is a major difference. Unbelievable. So, yes, took a while, but we uh big shout out. I know Deck was in here working with our camera expert and uh look like we got it set up. So, that’s uh that is fantastic. That is clear. Shout out. I love it. Deman and Morgan. Yeah. Um so, we got a lot of texts. 83341440. 83341440. Also, uh big shout out Elks Nation. I’m writing there now as well. Elks Nation uh debuted uh over the weekend. So, if uh you’re looking for some uh your one-stop shop for all things CFL, check it out. Go to elksnation.ca. CA. That’s also where you click on the podcast where Declan and Eddie Steel had Justin Rankin on the pod. It was fantastic. It was great. So, uh, check that out as well up at uh, Elks Nation and some article on a win the I thought the organization desperately needed in front of a huge crowd. It was the loudest crowd that I’ve been at for an Elks game in a long, long time. And it’s and it’s great to see. So, uh, 83341440. 83341440. You can text us in our ewell inbox. It is the Gregor Show presented by play alberta.ca. And did you win? Somebody won on Friday night. $50 million in Lottomax. Hopefully, it was one of you. Just remember the deal. You host a party, you invite us. It’s pretty simple. Lot of max tomorrow, 11 mil. Also, you uh some of you, hey, if you if you went the under on a lot of the games, you’d be pretty happy because it was uh on Sunday was pretty much an under under day other than the uh the Bills and uh the Ravens. I think there was uh there was only two games that that that hit the over, I think, cons. And uh but the Bills and Ravens, that was an unbelievable game. Now, you mentioned Cincinnati. They had, I think it was seven yards in the uh in the second half of that game, which is mindblow. Seven yards in the second half. That’s the fewest yards by any winning team in the last two and a half decades. Um their offensive line just looks awful right now. Now, maybe the Browns defensive line is that good, Connor. Hi. I don’t know. But my goodness, the O line of the uh it’s funny. The Bengals, they spent all their money on receivers and quarterbacks and it’s like, do we even need an O line? Like, it might be a tough year for Joe Bur. They did get the win, but my god, they he didn’t have much time. No. Yeah, they just got through there. Miles Garrett, I mean, in a sense, that guy can wreck games by himself, but he would be the main star there. About three points in the second half. That’s all they could mess up with all that talent they have on offense. That was a hugely disappointing performance by them. If you had them in the survivor pool, you’re probably on the edge of your seat because like what was going on there to the Browns who let’s face it, Gregor, like Joe Flacco did not look that great. Like he had it was awful. Okay plays. Yeah. Throwing balls low all over the field. And they’ve tried to add to their offensive line. They went out there and brought in Oh, Dalton Risner, I believe, at guard. But yeah, it’s it just was not a good performance. And the other over would have been the Jets and the Steelers who put on a fun game actually. Yeah. No, that was good. But you look at the Browns, their kicker missed a field goal. Yep. Like they should have won that game. They got they got to be pretty irked. But you do wonder how long are they going to go with Joe Flacco? Now I know a lot of these guys don’t play a lot in the preseason and uh you know you got to remember that in the NFL uh definitely there’s not a lot of points. Like what about the Lions? Was their offensive coordinator that important to them? Oh my goodness. They they look brutal. Now, I know that you I saw a lot of the stats that when Parsons was on the field compared to when he was off the field, like such a difference when he was on, Goff had no time to throw the ball compared to when he was off the field. And and he didn’t play every snap yet, right? So, he’s still getting uh up to speed. The Texans offense, a lot of people thought, hey, they would come in, they look brutal. Like, there was not many, you mentioned the uh the Jets. Who would have thought that Fields might have been the fourth best quarterback of the first weekend? Well, maybe fifth, I guess, if we go with uh with your Chargers. But, uh, you know, Aaron Rogers, I think, he’s the first quarterback in NFL history to have back-to-back four touchdown pass games, but play for two different teams. Because remember, his last game with the Jets, four touchdown passes last year, starts this year, four touchdown passes, no interceptions. He’s tied for the most games as a quarterback in NFL history to have four TDs and no interceptions. Him and Tom Brady now tied with the most. and that. So, he played pretty well. Um, the Colts, the first team since 1978 to score on every single offensive drive they had. Pretty impressive. Shows you how bad the Dolphins defense was, but also, hey, maybe you don’t sleep on the Colts offense. What’ you make of that game, Con? Yeah, we when you were gone, we had a Colts reporter on and they said like outside of quarterback, they actually really liked the pieces on this team and if you just get okay quarterback play from Daniel Jones, it should work out. Like Michael Pitman, Tyler Warren as a rookie tight end, like he was phenomenal if you don’t start him in fantasy. Maybe if that’s something you’re looking to do, but Alec Pierce, the catch that he had on the sidelines, what a throw from Daniel Jones. I do like what they have there. I think it might be more of a uh the truth about the Miami Dolphins. Like that team just not very good to Aaloa. I I haven’t been sold to him for a while. He’s got to stay healthy obviously, but Tyler Kills probably lost a step. Devon Achan, they only ran the ball seven time seven times. Sounds like a team that we cover here in Edmonton. Like, you got to have a little bit of a balanced attack with the football team. But yeah, I don’t know. I I think the Colts could probably comp compete for that division, especially, you know, what we saw from the Houston Texans wasn’t their best performance. Granted, against a good Rams defense, maybe that division is a little bit what more wide open. Uh Jacksonville also looked okay against the Carolina Panthers. See if they take it for what it is. is just one week. But yeah, I thought it was a pretty good performance from the Indianapolis Colts for sure. And we’ll see. Daniel Jones is going to be fun to watch throughout this season. See what he learned with the Vikings in that short time period and how much he uh improves his game and decision-m going into the rest of the season. Yeah. Well, Daniel Jones for for one day. Yeah. You know, it’s it is early, but uh they uh they look good. They look very good. So, um hey guys, uh when is the next Elks game? I have to say that’s the most exciting game I’ve been to. Uh, my 12-year-old son begged me to go, so he went. I don’t regret it. When’s their next home game, Mike? Mike, their next home game is in h just over two weeks because it’s Saturday the uh 27th and it’s against the Riders. It’s another five:00 start and uh should be a should be a great day for football hopefully. I like that. The weather was perfect. Weather was perfect and uh you know, the tailgating was rocking uh beforehand. Um, the Elks uh just announced that they’ve signed uh Jordan Williams to uh uh on the deal. Well, actually they signed him uh that was last week, but I don’t know if we mentioned that on the show. I think can’t remember if that was on Friday or Saturday, but either way, uh Jordan Williams is now here. Obviously, Szna’s not coming back and we don’t know how long Robbie Williams will be out, but hey, the Elks didn’t need them this game. But, uh their next home game is another Saturday 5:00 start. In the meantime, the Elks are uh on the road twice. They will be in Toronto this Saturday, a 1:00 start, Edmonton time. So remember that if you uh if you plan on watching, it’ll be one and then they are in Hamilton the following Saturday and that’s a 5:00 Edmonton start time. So uh Saturday, Saturday, Saturday in the month of September for the green and gold. Uh, also, uh, some of the other games that, you know, you look at the cons, was there any other game that stood out? Like I I know it was Carolina, but what about the Jags? Like we’ve been waiting for them and their quarterback for a while. Uh, did they do anything to show you that, hey, maybe, you know, kind of like it was good to see Travis Tienna have a really good game for them. Went over 140 yards on the ground. Trevor Lawrence, I still don’t really know. Like I think the Carolina Panthers just still aren’t that good of a football team as much as we hope for them in their division. It wasn’t a convincing win by me despite the score 26 to 10. The the delay in the weather kind of slowed things down. Uh other games, you know, there there was games that I found entertaining, but maybe it wasn’t necessarily the best football. Like the Raiders and Pats, I was kind of following along with uh Balkan uh Falcons and Bucks. That was another one. Like when the Bucks got the back ball back with a couple minutes remaining, I was just thinking if you’re a betting person, go live that one cuz the Bucks are going to drive down. Baker Mayfield’s going to get the job done. But Michael Penn, I thought in year two looked a lot better. And I mean I I would be crazy if I didn’t mention Friday night’s game. Uh that was a real fun one when Pat Mahomes started getting going. Uh using the feet a little bit more than the arm with the loss of a couple of their top receivers. Had no receivers in the game. Yeah. He just had to, you know, take over on the ground which he did. He was really good. But uh I was happy to see Justin Herbert on the biggest stage actually respond when he needed to make a big play and needed to respond with the touchdown drive. He was able to do so. So I enjoyed that one as well. Fun game out in Brazil. Uh coming up on the show today, Kevin Woodley is going to join us right now. Uh we’re going to go uh we do every divi different division every week leading up ranking the goalenders. We’ll get to all of that with Woodley. We got Pierre Ud will join us. Uh Ken Dryden passed away over the weekend. very few NHL players had a career uh like Ken Dryen, not only on the ice, but then uh you just look at uh what he did afterwards, his his book, The Game. If you haven’t read The Game, uh you need to read The Game. So, you know, Ken Dryden uh how many Stanley Cups uh did he win? I think it was six. And the guy only played um three, four, five, I think he played nine years. Won the Cup six times. Pretty damn impressive. He won the K smite. He won the Calder. He won a Vzna five times. Ken Tran probably gets overlooked a little bit in just how dominant he was. His his career didn’t last as long maybe as some other goalies, but when he was there, man, it was unreal. Even took a year off when he was uh having trouble negotiating a contract, so he articled for a year because he wanted to be a lawyer. Then he just came back. No big deal. And guess what? Oi comes back, plays well, and then he was part of those uh four consecutive Stanley Cups. like he had an unreal career uh for him. The author of the game obviously was a was a politician as well and a little bit different of a politician in the sense that he always seem to tell the truth. So that was refreshing. But um Ken Dryden, rest in peace, passed away at the age of 78 on September 5th. So we’ll talk to Pierre about that. Jamie Thomas will be by. We got two-minute warning with Tater. Uh Ari Hassan will join us. Of course there is a Monday nighter to talk about spec. We also got Noah Taylor, defensive lineman of the Elks. What changed? How can you go from six sacks in 11 games to four in one against a team that doesn’t give up any sacks? So, we’ll talk to Noah Taylor about that and we’ll get lots of your thoughts. 833 401440 in our Ewell inbox. It’s the Gregor Show presented by play Alberta.ca. If you’re a sports fan, so much going on. CFL, NFL, tennis, F1, NHL’s around the corner. MLBs in the uh stretch drive. Got oh soccer started up uh if you’re into the uh European soccer going on, man. Love it. You got uh junior football. The Huskies with a big win over their cross town rival Wildcats. Also, they’ll go at it again this coming weekend. So, uh nothing like a back-to back Wildcats Huskys rivalry. Two weekends in a row. It’s fantastic. It was close game. Huskies got up early in the first. the Wildcats storm back but ultimately lost 24-20 and uh we’ll see what happens in game two really this weekend. Now let’s go around the NHL brought to you by McDonald’s. Start your morning right with a small Mcafe premium roast coffee for only $1 plus tax. Great way to start your day. as we welcome in Kevin Wooden from ingal magazine and nh.com and uh we always like to uh to rank the goalies in the team from uh from 1 to eight in each division and uh we’ll start in the Atlantic division today. Kev Kev, how you doing my man? I’m good. Jason, how are you buddy? I am uh I’m excellent. Um I love this time of year. There’s so much going on in sports. So obviously the the NHL is right around the corner. Rookie camps will get going for teams on uh on Wednesday uh this week. There’ll be some rookie tournaments, some rookie games starting on the weekend and then of course main camp uh begins on ice next Thursday. So let’s start in the Atlantic and we’ll work our way from bottom up. We’re ranking not just starting goalie, but you’re ranking like the 10 of kind of the top three in each team. Correct. Or is it top two? It’s weighted towards the top two. I think I think we’ve seen you have to include who the three is. And so if you’ve got a good third option, like obviously this is the tough part, like you look at the Boston Bruins, I expect a bounce back from Jeremy Swayman. Um, but is the backup Anton Forsber or is the backup Michael Dpietro? And do you get to keep all three is is another question. Or do they lose somebody off waiverss there? Right. So that would reflect how you And the other part too is if you’ve got a really solid one, two, how often and how how long are you going to need the number three for? Maybe in Ottawa you do because Lena Smarks had had difficulty getting through a full season. But I do think as much as I used to weigh these more heavily, one through three, as we’ve seen a balanced workload between one and two, three still matters, but if you’ve got a good one, two, it’s obviously less important because when you lose one of the top two, the other guy’s capable, you know, you’re not in a 20 game backup situation asking him to play 40. Everybody that’s in the NHL is probably tabbed for a 30ame guy. So how much how much of a drop off if you’ve asked him to play 40. So it’s really interesting how the the waters have almost muddied a little bit on that makes it hard a little harder to do these but you have to be cognizant of sort of that entire depth chart as well. Now we should just clarify quickly. It’s Corpusal uh not Forsber in Boston. Yeah. Yeah. No. No no no it’s just so I’m looking at too many names in front of me right now. Jason, there you go. Now let’s start. Uh, who do you have number eight in the Atlantic division? Yeah, and this is this is a tough one, but you know, somebody’s got to be last, and the numbers don’t favor them. And frankly, a big part of that is how bad the environment’s been. Um, you know, Ukrainan and the Buffalo Sabres are at the bottom of that list. And this this isn’t a slight on. We saw what UPPL could do two years ago. Um, you know, you you remember me talking two years about how low Eric Comry’s expected save percentage was. Yeah. 858, the lowest I’d ever seen. Well, as he’s moved on, they haven’t had anyone to give those games to. And so, all of a sudden, their young starters have had to absorb more of those really tough minutes. And we saw UPL’s numbers drop last year, although I didn’t think he was that bad, but um, you know, when the environment gets like that in front of you, it’s tough to keep it up. Uh James Rhymer had an exceptional second half in last couple of months of the season, but he’s gone. In comes Alex Lion who’s absolutely capable of being a really good 1B. And you’ve got Devin Levi probably starting in the American Hockey League again, but up and coming. Like this is one could that could easily beat those projections and finish, you know, much higher up in this division because the talent is there. All three of them. I’m an Alex Lion guy. We’ve talked about UPPL and you know how much I believe in Deon Levi, but right now the way this team defends, the way they’re constructed, I don’t think any of us are going to see it. And so between the adjusted numbers last year and and what they project to be defensively despite great personnel, um I’m not sure we’re going to see it again this year either. So the Sabres come in at the bottom. Okay. Um then who do you have number seven? Yeah, this is probably going to offend fans in Montreal. Um, but it’s a similar case of of upside being there. Uh, Sam Montbo, I know he’s on the Four Nations team and he had some really good moments. Consistency was an issue. So, maybe he takes another step with the consistency because his highs are good enough to be an NHL starter. Um, but at at the end of the year, the balance is just right around league average. And in this division, you know, with the Leafs tandem and Tampa with Bassie and even with Sergey Babroski’s regular season numbers being underwater, but you had all Mark into it, it’s tough to it’s tough to finish high in this division. So, um, Jakob Dobish showed a lot of promise. If he he has so much athleticism and so much size, if he could re it in another tandem that could jump up and obviously with the young goalender coming out of college, I mean, he could Fowler could jump right. He’s one of the top ranked prospects. Everybody I talked to loves this kid’s game and he Yeah, he might be a kid that Jacob Fowler that’s able to jump into the NHL at a real young age, but you would think even with being a little older coming through the college circuit that they’ll let him, you know, sort of chill in the American Hockey League for a while as we saw with Levi in this division. That’s usually the best way to do it. Okay. Lot of guys love Fowler. I know that sounded like a surprise, but when I did when I looked at I asked 10 NHL goalie people like uh high-end development or directors to sort of rank guys uh under the age of 25. Fowler was in the top five of a lot of lists. Right up there with Trey Austinine and some like a lot of goalie people love him. Okay. All right, Hab fans. So keep that name in mind. So you have the Habs at five. thought. Now, I’m going to guess you got Detroit six. I actually got six. This is a tough one for me. I actually I have Boston six and Detroit slightly ahead of them. Okay. And this is me making a bet on John Gibson. Um the adjusted numbers last year were a lot more flattering than they’ve been the previous couple. Uh fresh start. I I’m hope I’m hoping you’ll see a better defensive effort and I’m not sure we’re going to see the same out of Boston. Right. But when I look at this is me measuring what you’re going to see in the public eye, okay, for these tandemss um versus what I’m seeing behind the scenes. And I’m not convinced that Boston bounces back defensively from what I’ve seen. And that I expect Swayman to bounce back, but again, I’m not sure I’m not sure how much we’re going to see it behind the numbers. So the adjusted numbers might look really good, but at the end of the year when we rank the tandemss based on the raw stuff, it won’t be nearly as flattering. So that’s part of this equation. I think Swayman bounces back, but I’m not sure. Um, you know, that tandem with Corposal as as much as I thought it would go better last year, I got that one wrong. Like, it didn’t go as well as I thought. And I’m a big Michael DPro guy, but that’s a big ask to come into that team. It’s kind of like we we’ll get to the Metro next week. Um, but it’s like Archer Sheilops. You can like him as a goalender, but what it’s what’s it going to be like in that environment? or when we get to the Pacific. I like Alex Nadelkovich, but what’s it going to be like in that environment? For that reason, uh combined with some question marks about who’s number two, despite the depth, I’ve got the Bruins behind the Red Wings. What do you think happens with DPro and Corpusal? I genuinely don’t know. And and you know, we hear a lot of talk sometimes about, you know, let’s see what happens in training camp, but goalie jobs aren’t won or lost in training camp. Like unless somebody comes in and they decided to stop working out or stop actually doing anything in the offse like these things are what do you get in preseason a game and a half as a backup you know like we’re going to see that train like it’s pretty rare that you see jobs won or lost in the preseason now if you really want to get a guy to the miners the way to do it is to send him down early but then he doesn’t get any taste in preseason not fair to the athlete but you’re protecting your investment so I’m curious to see what they do there, Jason. I don’t pretend to have any answers. Um, I mean, the good news is you have options and I, you know, talking to people around Michael D’Pro and the things he’s done the past couple of years, as much as I’ve always been a fan of him and his willingness to evolve his game, um, you know, there’s a belief there that if they if they were to lose Corpusal that he’s capable of doing the job. So, um, do they risk losing him? And yet he’s a guy that was, you know, let’s be honest at the time a throw in in the trade with the Canucks. So it’s not like they’re deeply deeply invested. Yeah. All right. So going back to Detroit. So you got Boston six, Detroit five. You’re making the bet on Gibson. Um you know what about the environment in Detroit though? How much of a concern is that? Well, I I think it got a little better um after the coaching change. I think the goalie environment got friendlier after the co coaching change a little bit. um from a coaching perspective and I don’t mean the goal of coach I mean some of the some of the things around like the irony is Derrick Loland is a former goalender um but he did not enamor himself to the goalies that played under him let’s put it that way and and made their life a little tough mentally um which is probably putting it kindly to be honest with you so I I look at Cam Talbot a guy who’s had a lot of success when everything is is sort of little more in control in front of him, but also when the workload is a little more little better managed. And so I look at him being like a 1B now, and that props up his value to me, a guy who’s who’s had the potential to to who’s had good runs at starts of seasons, right? Like at the beginning of last season, we were having conversations about Cam Talbot and team Canada at the four nations. Like people kind of forget because it didn’t end well, but that was part of the conversation at the beginning of last year in Detroit. That’s how good he was early on. And so I think you will get that version of him longer in a 1B role with John Gibson. So me having them ranked this high in a division with some really good goalenders um is largely a bet on John Gibson, but also that you get better out of Camp Talbot slid down into that secondary role. Uh so now we got four teams left. No surprise. Toronto, Tampa, uh, Florida, uh, as well as, uh, the Ottawa Senators, teams who all made the playoffs last year. Who’s for? Yeah, I know. I’m going to take some heat over this one, too. Um, and it’s hard to argue. I don’t deserve it. But Sergey Babroski in the regular season is not Sergey Babroski that wins Stanley Cups. Like, the numbers aren’t there. It’s below average for several seasons in a row in a really friendly defensive environment. His adjusted save percentage was minus.5% last year, which is 42nd in the league, right? Like um and Terasoffs in Columbus was also minus 5%. So there’s a big bet there, you know, like like Steuart Skinner got crucified in Edmonton first by some four periods. Tristan Jarry ended up in the minor leagues last year and they were both just a hair below Sergey Babrosky’s regular season performance. So there is no denying Bob’s ability in the playoffs to rise to the occasion. And we talked about how this has shifted like your overall numbers versus in the playoffs. You need to be able to make the high danger stuff and he does at an incredible clip. But the mid and low danger that go in in the regular season at the end of the day, they they they sort of outweigh it statistically. So, it’s hard for me to rank him above the rest of the class. And and it’s not just him. It’s the questions about Terasoft. Tons of upside. Another guy that could make us all look silly um based on the pedigree. But right now, in terms of where he’s at, like the Florida Panthers by the numbers from last year in the regular season, as hard as that is to say given how they went things went in the playoffs, they should probably by the math be even lower than this. Okay. So, um, who do you have at three? Yeah. Um, three is Ottawa. And one of the biggest question marks here is obviously how many games will Lenus Almark play. But one of the reasons they’re so high for people might be wondering like what the heck like El Mar has health problems and he hasn’t quite been able to get back to the level when he deservedly won the VZNA with Boston. Uh, their game has improved defensively under Travis Gray. I don’t like their defense from a personnel standpoint. Didn’t like it last year, but the game improved as a team defensively. When Allark was there, especially before the first injury, he was exceptional. And this is me making a bet on the young backup, Levi Miran, who also appeared on a lot of those lists I talked about. Maybe not as prominently at the top of them, but certainly flirting with the top five from most of the sort of NHL observers and directors and directors of development and scouting for NHL teams. Um he’s 22 years old. His adjusted numbers were right up there with Lenus last year. Uh and and I think playing him more now that he’s got his feet wet in the league will allow Lenus to play less. Uh they got some great goalending out of Forsber down the stretch. And so losing him and how he played the final couple months of the season is a blow. But as I can’t remember who it was, uh which analyst stated this, but they weren’t wrong. It was like twothirds of the way through the season and somebody said they’re best goalenders in the American Hockey League and statistically it was true. Well, now he’s going to be up in the NHL and I think him and Lena Salmark give them a chance to be a top half of this division tandem. Kevin Willie from Engle Magazine NHL.com joins us. That leads us to Toronto Tampa. Drum roll, please. Number two is Tampa Bay Lightning. And again, this this will be Yeah, absolutely. This will be this will be just like the the the Bob one. How can you have how can you have Bob and the Panthers so low? Listen, Vassie was really good last year. The team was exceptional defensively. His adjusted numbers aren’t as flattering as where he finished up in terms of you know like VZNA voting and all those things. Um, and the reality is the drop off to the backup is significant. Whereas the Toronto maybe like like quietly when healthy, Anthony Stolers has the best save percentage in the entire National Hockey League over the last three seasons. I was asked I was asked elsewhere or maybe maybe it was us last week about sort of the most overrated goalies in the league and he was on the top of my list which is hard to do when you’re in Toronto and leading the league in save percentage. When healthy, he’s that good. Joseph Wool took a step last year in terms of health. His game dropped back a little bit, but statistically, you line those two up and they’re they’re they’re easily the top tandem in this division and one of the top tandemss in the entire National Hockey League. So, this is not a Vaselki slight in the slightest. This is more about the difference between two guys posting really good numbers and in the case of Stallers, frankly, numbers that surpass what Basilki did and right are right there when Vaselki was in his prime. Again, fair question. Can he do it and stay healthy longer? There’s a lot of goalies, including Elar, in this division, that have to answer that. Um, but I’m hoping that the balance of the two gives him a better chance. Having both of them there gives him a better chance to get through a season. But until you’ve done it, you haven’t done it. And that’s been a question mark for Anthony Sters. But when he’s in there, man, he’s as good as anyone. And I would argue the two of them give them the best goalending. I am arguing the two of them give them the best goalending in this division. What did you say? What stat was he? He had the best adjusted save percentage. I think I might even be raw save percentage, but certainly his best his numbers over the last three years are tops in the league in adjusted, I believe. So, yeah, I I think I’m pretty sure I made a note that it was actually like rosé percentage as well. Like if you look at what he did, he did it and he’s done it with three like he did it in Anaheim. He he outperformed Bob. Like again, he was clearly the backup. So I mean maybe he didn’t get all the tough minutes but like statistically when he was in there his numbers were better than Sergey Babroski’s and yeah so his adjusted save percentage over the last three years for anybody that’s let’s just call it a thousand shots to get rid of the tiny sample guys like Javs is tops in the National Hockey League ahead of Lenus Almark ahead of Connor Hellabuk ahead of Igor Shasherkin Anthony Sters has been that good the problem is how often do you get to play H. All right. So, and you’re still going to put him number one even though the injuries because that’s to me the one where it’s like the best ability is dependability. Availability. Yes. Absolutely. Listen, I’m an optimist. This is me being an optimist at the start of the season, right? So, where we’re really going to get tested is we get into four weeks from now and I got to do the Pacific Division and the team I cover on a daily basis is asking to be optimistic about a guy who has yet to make it through a regular season healthy. Yeah. No, fair enough. Yeah. because that is the that is the key. So, uh great stuff. So, Toronto, Tampa, Ottawa, Florida, Detroit, Boston, Montreal, and Buffalo 1 through 8 in the Atlantic. Uh Woodley, great stuff, man. Uh we will uh we will be doing the Central next week, so I look forward to it. Have yourself an awesome week. Thanks, Jason. Hey, we got a lot of text flying in 83341440 in our UL inbox. 83341440. Hey guys, uh what’s your thoughts about the baseball Karen incident? Pods. Um I I do think that at times we might go overboard on witch hunting on, you know, people trying to get someone to lose their job over a dumb decision. Like really? I think we all know she’s out of line. Um, do do I need to see someone lose their job because they um they take a baseball away? The kid got another base, got it, but the kid actually ended up with with a better memory than getting the ball. I’m not saying it’s right. Like, obviously, it wouldn’t do it. And she’s obviously got some issues like um I don’t know. I don’t I kind of I kind of chuckle at people who go overboard about a baseball at a game. Like it’s a random foul ball. What do you think it’s worth? Nothing. So why are you going crazy over it? And here’s the thing. There’s no like there’s no rule, right? First of all, I should never touch the ball. Second of all, if somebody wants to come over and they’re quick, hey, first come, first serve. That’s how it goes. I uh it is a little uh it’s it’s a tad ridiculous like hey if I caught a ball and I and my son there whatever but would I run over a section to get a ball? I don’t know. I don’t think so. But you never know. Would I let my my son go over? Sure if he wants to and as long as you’re not jumping over everybody then yeah whatever. I don’t know. I uh I just find it odd that people go crazy over a souvenir ball that’s just like what? Right. Cons, where do you come out? Yeah. I mean, I I kind of thought that it was kind of weird behavior from her to to go do that. Like you, I don’t think that I’m going to hate on the person and rally for her to lose her job and be, you know, black ballalled from society for a momentary lapse of judgment. Although, I think if you act like that, it’s probably not the first time. like her actions afterwards like she g there’s I feel no remorse like I don’t feel empathy for her like when you consider she was mouthing off everybody else in the section like she just you can’t just say oh gez maybe I might have gotten caught up here and overreacted over a baseball that by the way like she never even touched you watch the replay she never touched the ball crazy I will say I’ve been in that like at an Elks game with a football I was with Declan actually his ball going right at him I onehanded it right in front of him broke it up didn’t even think to keep it. Like I’m immediately like where’s a kid to give this to? So it to me I don’t really understand what she was doing. A little bit of a a freak out, but I’m glad for the little kid that got his thing and you know he’s he’s benefiting more than he would have if he just kept that foot there of the baseball. So it all worked out okay. Hey guys, why would the dad give the baseball back? I just tell her to get lost from Stu. Yeah. Well, you know what? The father did get interviewed and he said, “I was trying to show my son an example of, you know, diffuse a situation. She just kept going, whatever.” And he said, “Is it really worth it?” No. Now, he did admit that, you know what, in hindsight, I wish I would have kept it and just said, “No, because there’s two lessons here. You can very calmly diffuse a situation. Say, ma’am, you never touched the ball, so we have it. Enjoy your day.” And and just, you know, turn away and sit down, right? Say, “Thank you very much. Move on.” So either way, like the end of the day, I don’t know if it uh um it matters that much, but there’s somebody who probably feels like they can just get their way wherever they want and have probably done it. And maybe I’ll be a little bit of a lesson in But here’s the problem. Like you remember the CEO who took the hat, right? And then somebody put out a fake statement and everybody assumed it was him. See, that’s where the problem comes in here is people get all up in arms about something that doesn’t affect your personal life and then you blindly believe a fake thing that already came out and said, “Hey, you know, cuz if you read the last part, you knew it was fake, right? You knew it was fake. He came out, geez, I’m really sorry, da da da, whatever.” Now, was he really sorry? I don’t know. But the first one, he didn’t even say that wasn’t him. So, that’s you have to be careful of that. Now, in the AI world, you’ve got to I would read something and then take a second and be like, is this real? Am I 100% sure this is real? Because sadly, there’s lots of fake stuff now that gets uh spread around. So, I would always be uh I would laugh. Uh I mean, not laugh, but I would be uh I would definitely be a little uh a little lary in that. Uh hey guy, Philly Karen’s definitely a Karen. and hilarious at the time, but I failed to understand the need for a witch hunt from uh Walter. Yeah, guys, uh I understand diffusing this situation, but I feel like people do that because they can get away with it. Maybe. Very true. And guys, I laughed that she scolded the other guys in eagles uniform, too, and then she gave everybody the bird. Yeah. Well, she That’s what I’m saying. Like, that’s why it wasn’t just a momentary loss of of uh common sense. the other action suggested this is not the first time she feels that um she should be able to get away with anything she wants. So guys, there’s some melees in the stands going after those mini footballs. Well, from Phil. Yeah, for sure. I’ve But I can say I’ve never seen people over one of the mini footballs that gets thrown in the crowd after game go fisticuffs over it. Right now, that’s not saying it’s never happened. I’ve never watched every football toss in the history of the game. I just haven’t seen one recently that leads to fist of cuffs cuz hey, you know what? Now they even have cons. I don’t know if you notice it, but they even have somebody who works for the organization who like has a seat. I think it’s section um J where he had a box. So when there was a touchdown, so the the fire truck comes around, but there was a guy halfway up who’s already throwing balls into the upper half of the uh of the section in the lower bowl. So more people have a chance to get the football. People love those footballs. I get it. My kid loves it. It’s great. But would I fight someone over it? I would not. Would I rip it out of the hands of someone else? I would not. But I guess to each their own. So, have you ever caught a baseball at the game? Uh, no. Uh, no, that’s not true. I caught Well, I didn’t catch it. Cons, I was at a um Cracker Cats game. Mhm. I was sitting down on the first base side and it landed like four rows in front of us. So, there’s no one there. So, I just went and picked it up. So, I didn’t catch it just to be clear. I always like to make like a one-handed snag, but no, I didn’t catch it. You got it, though. I got it. Yeah, but I didn’t catch it. I just want to clear. That’s fair. Have you had one? No. No. Never even close for me actually. No. I like always kind of go through it like every time I’d go to a game, especially as a kid with my glove, like envisioning it happening, but never never even came close. Yeah. Vegas 51’s game had a few whiz past us that I’m glad I didn’t try to catch, but Oh, dude. I I remember before they put up the mesh at all the stadiums that they have now, I was always amazed that more people didn’t get KO’ed by a screaming line drive going foul down the first or third baseline. Like absolut even some of the foul balls like you see some nowadays it’s hard because if it’s a foul ball it’s got to go over the mesh and so by that time for the most part everybody around you is going to be screaming. You should have some time to real okay the ball’s coming. I can cover up. I can do something. But um in the old days, man, I was always stunned that more people didn’t get absolutely KO’ed. And I’m sure people did. I know. Well, I saw some videos of people do it, but like honestly, you get one straight in the head and and die from it. I was always kind of surprised like that it didn’t happen more frequently because those are like screamers, right? You see when a guy pulls on one a little bit too hard and like what’s the exit velocity? 100 plus miles an hour coming at you in the crowd. Yeah. You got to be awake. So, and that’s why like when people say, “Oh, if you’re a grown man, you shouldn’t bring a glove to game.” What the hell are you talking about? Are you going to trust yourself to try to catch a screamer bare-handed? You have a glove. I wouldn’t judge you. I don’t care. You get the glove up half the time. It’s for preservation more than anything else. So, guys, I was about to catch a Jason Arnot slapshot from the point in the second deck, but the girl stood up right in front of me and she took it in the head from hammer. Ouch. Yikes. Yeah. Before they had the meshing up, oh, there’d be a few rockets kind of like Slapshot with the organist, it would happen. Like I remember the first time I went to um the gardens in in Toronto, the Maple Leaf Gardens. And cons you know, so you used to have the glass behind the net, right? So the glass comes up behind the net where they had the seats were directly above the glass like not back like I’m talking straight line right above the glass and I remember sitting there and being like oh my god like you better pay attention here there was no mesh like you sat literally right above the net 15 20 feet up there was no space like there’s a point shot now granted people didn’t block shots like they do now but still you had to be on high alert or you were eating one in the tops very very easily. And I’m sure there’s people out there that have done it. So, um that is crazy. Like an overhang like right above the Yeah, pretty much. Yeah. Right there. Holy cow. Yeah. Like I remember walking in and like I was so happy I got to go like if there was one stadium I wish I could have gotten to go to was the old Chicago stadium. I went to the form, went to Maple Leaf Gardens, and you know, the rinks now, they’re all nice, but they’re big and spacious and they’re, you know, they’re kind of like people care about more of the bells and whistles, but the smaller rink where you were closer, you had a steeper grade, the viewing atmosphere was infinitely better. Yeah, the seats were a little bit smaller and maybe it didn’t have all the amenities on the concourse, but the pitch was steeper and you were closer to the game. The action was way better. And Chicago Stadium is the one place I would have loved to go simply for the organ more than anything else. It would have been uh it would have been fantastic. Hey guys, I remember rockets flying at us during warm was in the food line behind the net at Rexall Place. Yep. You had to be on alert, man. Hey, nowadays sometimes people go like I’m always stunned when I walk like remember that lady who took the basketball right in the face um at at an NBA cuz like there’s no match at the NBA game and she’s sitting there and like the play is on and she’s looking down at her phone and just gets crushed right in the face by the ball. Like I’m sorry at that point I got no I got no I have very little empathy for you at that moment. If you’re at a live sporting event and you’re staring at your phone and not at the what’s going on in the field or the pitch or the ice, sorry, you get hit, I I blame that person. It’s like someone walking on the street. If you just step off the curb because you’re watching your phone, it’s on you. You got to be aware of your surroundings. Have to be. Pierre Hood is going to join us in the four o’clock hour to talk about the amazing career on and off the ice for Ken Dryen, of course, a Hall of Famer who passed away at the age of uh 78 on uh um Friday. So, our condolences to to Ken. We’ve had Ken on the show a few different times talking about his different books. His book, The Game, if you haven’t read it yet, it is a it is a book that is a must readad for a sports fan. It is fantastic. Cons, have you read The Game? No, I I have not actually. He’s read he’s wrote a few books, right? Yes, he has. Yeah. But I think that’s his best one. So, that I just think that’s a it’s a it’s a must-read book for for any sports fan. Totally is. So 833 401440. A lot of text. Hey guys, we sat at the orders game right behind the net in row 16. You can see the top of the crossbar over the glass at Rex Hall. It was scary. Hey, you got to be alert, baby. You got to be alert, guys. That was the third ever game of the Skyome. Third baseline. I caught a ball after it hit the guy behind me right on top of his head from Darcy. Now, how is the guy Dar make it through it? O, take a screamer right in the melon. I can’t uh I can’t think that’s uh that’s going to be feeling good at all. Boys, I almost caught a ball once. Guy in front of me though reached out and caught it just before I could. It was Albert Puhol from uh Mikey B. Well, hey man, that is tough. That when you’re at the And you know what though, it’s just when when you when there’s a foul ball and everybody’s around there, it’s kind of like who has the longest arms maybe or who just has the best timing just to shoot your hand up and and then again, can you catch it? Because when we were at the Jay’s game, I watched numerous balls were going to the crowd and it would bounce off four or five people and it would and then someone else would grab it. So there there was one kid though who made a sick catch right in our section about three rows behind us. He was about 16 17 years of age and man it was a home run ball. It was the uh um Gimenez home run and god he was just flying high. It was awesome. So, that was great. 311, we got a lot of texts flying. Hey guys, where’s Nan Hopkins? Why wasn’t he skating with the players? Um, fair question. They weren’t all there. Bousard wasn’t there. Nan Hopkins wasn’t there. Now, Heyman wasn’t there because he doesn’t shoot yet. Yanmark wasn’t around. WMAN wasn’t around. Emerson. So, guys don’t have to be there. I would guess. Now, there’s they’re probably still having captain skates, but they’re uh they’re close to the to media. They’re just they’re just skating together. So I would guess nan Hopkins my understanding was most guys you kind of expect that you there because there’s no you don’t need to report until training camp now and Conor McDavid the one year did put out a request to all of his teammates to show up but in a shortened summer there’s no requirement to be there early but my understanding is uh most guys will be there uh probably by uh tomorrow at the latest uh if they’re not already there barring injury right or just you I know something else. Ike Howard wasn’t there because he was at the uh NHL rookie orientation camp. So, there’s different things like that, but um I haven’t heard anything, but it is probably worth digging into uh a little bit. Nan Hopkins. Now, the injury he had wasn’t like Heymans. Heyman’s had ligament injury in his in his wrist, which always takes longer and it’s brutal. And that’s why he hasn’t shot a puck yet all summer. So, that’s uh that’s a little little concerning. I I would say that seems unlikely that he will um be ready to go for the uh season opener. And you know, I’d say no chance. I hadn’t shot a puck yet, so I’d say no chance he’s going to be uh be ready to play for um in the preseason. Like there’s there’s no chance that’s going to happen. So 833 401440 83341440. Few other uh news notes. Hey guys, looking at the Elks, any word on when Dunar will return. I think they miss him. Well, I agree. They they definitely miss him, but they still score 31 points. Belair’s come in. He’s pretty good. Um Dunar is not going to be on any of the next two games, my understanding. So, um, it’s too bad, but hey, Matthysse is out, Dunar is out, and they’ve been able to bring in some some other receivers who’ve done pretty good job. So, hey guys, The Game is the best book a hockey fan can read. I’ve read it quite a few times. It was definitely my favorite from uh Louie. It is a fantastic book. Conman’s, I strongly recommend that uh you get a copy of it if you can. So, what’s the premise? Uh, how would I describe the premise for Well, he just he really describes kind of the How would I got to think of a good way to describe it? He he just really gives you um an an inside look at at how the game from a player’s perspective is and lots of other like kind a lot of the mental side, a lot of there’s just so many there’s so many different things. I haven’t read it in a few years. So, and that was a terrible description. I know that. Um, I just remember reading it and rereading quite a few chapters, right? It’s it’s reflective. It’s thoughtprovoking. It really kind of takes you into the game. That would probably be the best way I could explain. So, that’s how I would do it. And you know what? What? You’ll probably won’t like this, but there is an audio book for the people like me that are not good at continually reading books. Looks like there’s an audio book. So, that might be my route here, actually. Okay. All right. I know some people like uh I I like the book for a variety of reasons because I like to underline things and uh um and kind of go back and, you know, because there’s just like there’s certain lines in a book for different reasons that you want to go to. So, um, yeah, I thought it was it’s it’s just a really good book. And now I granted I haven’t read it in a few years, but I think it would hold up very well today because I think it was written, it’s got to be close to 30 years they wrote that book. though, right? Um, it’s it’s kind of a combination cons of a little bit of a memoir with, you know, talking about the game, you know, talking about retirement and everything else. Like, it’s just I thought it was pretty good insight into an athlete and in the game itself. That’s what I would say. I think it’s hard for me to think why somebody wouldn’t enjoy the book. You might not love it. I guess every like I can’t predict what everybody’s going to feel, but it would be hard for me. Let’s say you listen to it or read it. Doesn’t matter to me. But when you’re done, I’d be I’d be surprised if you said, “Nah, I got nothing out of that. I didn’t really like it.” I’d be surprised. You might not love it because everybody’s going to have a different thing of what they love. Right? So, like you don’t have to be a Montreal Canadians fan because we got a lot of people texting, “Well, Gregor, I don’t like the Canadians, so why would I like the book?” Well, cuz it’s not really like obviously he played for the Canadians, but that’s not really what it’s about. Like obviously it talks about his time with the Canadians, but that’s I I wouldn’t uh I wouldn’t say you have to be a a Montreal fan to really appreciate it. So 83341440 83341440. Hey guys, my audio book is sports 1440. Nice from Sean. I like Well, it’s a new chapter every day, Sean. Right. That’s that’s I guess the good news, right? It’s a continual book that every day you listen to it, you’re not sure what’s going to come up. That I kind of like it. That’s nice. We appreciate us being uh your audio book. Connor Hley will sign your audio book anytime you want. Uh when we come back, it’s interesting. We’re talking about Ken Dryen goender and we’re going to we’re going to talk about a team that I think I don’t know if there’s any other team that has such a unique I don’t know if frustration is probably an unfair word, but uncertainty about what will happen in that position all season. That’s the point of this all season because it seems to be at different times it’s drastically different. I don’t think there’s one team in the organiz in the in the NHL that has a more drastic difference of their goalending at different times of the year. I’ll talk about it next in the Gregor Show presented by play alberta.ca. Hungry. I’ve got booster balls from Booster Juice. Booster what now? Booster Balls. Jamie Thomas joins us once again. JT, how you doing? Really good, man. So that that I’ve read the game. It’s outstanding. So I understand how your listener appreciates that. Uh but I’m going to go check out that boy crisis book. Oh, but Jamie, yeah, you as a father, I tell you, you read it and then when the Jets come to town, we’ll have a coffee and discuss it. It’s honestly, it’s one of the best conversation books. There’s so much in that book. You’ll need a highlighter. I’ll say that. You’ll need a highlighter. You will It’ll You’ll be You’ll love it. I know you you’ll love it. Have to buy a new version is what you’re saying. So, I can’t take a used version. No. Well, you could take one, but um you I always like I I that book I liked it so much I bought I bought a copy for all my buddies because I felt like you know a lot of them have you know young boys and I was like you need to read this and uh you know I had beers with a few of them. We talked about lots of it. It’s fantastic. So it’s great. Okay. Thanks man. That’s why I listen to your show. That’s why I come on. Oh I love it. Yeah I love it. Fantastic. So um I was talking before I don’t think there’s a team in the NHL who has has had such a drastic different. You got a Vzna Trophy winner who’s like unreal. Well, and and then you get to the playoffs and it’s like, what the hell’s going on? It doesn’t make sense, right? So, and you and you won’t really know if it changes until you get to the playoffs. That’s the crazy part about it because if Connor Hellbuck has another top three statistical season, no one will be shocked because he’s that good. Do you know what? You’re close to you talk to him all the time. What do you make of this situation? I I think like listen, I’m I would be crazy and I would have to be drinking the Kool-Aid to not tell you there was a concern. The weird part was is just and it was especially that open series against St. Louis is just a massive difference between how well they played on at home and then on the road and how things would just go sideways when they were in St. Louis. It it was it was it didn’t make any sense that he was so on his game. Looked like the guy that was, you know, hard trophy candidate at the time and another well on his way to his third Vzna. It just it defied logic whatsoever. But I will say this, I feel that he got past a massive hurdle just winning that series, right? They were down, they were down 3-1. He shuts the door, you know, through, you know, the third period through, you know, a period and a half of overtime. Uh the Jets were short of defenseman. They were down to five defenseman in in that game against St. Louis in game seven. He gets him over the hump. So, and then he has two shutouts against Dallas in the next round. I thought I felt like he looked more like himself and I think, you know, he he admitted that he had to be better after the first two games in St. Louis after games three and four. And that’s the first time I’ve ever heard him say that he had to be better. And I’ve been here seven years, you know, we’ve, you know, we said he’s always said he’s like these details. I like my game, you know, and you’re kind of wondering at what point. So, I think maybe whether or not he believed it, uh, the fact that he publicly said that he felt he had to be he had to be better, that was, I think, a big moment for him. And then getting past game seven, admittedly, he said he got over a hump there. So, maybe it’s a mental hurdle. Okay. Now, now Jason, like I seriously I also would have to be drinking the K massively if I didn’t believe he has to do it again and may it has to be like two rounds, right? It just it’s not just you got you got that one series win over top of St. Louis and you know things didn’t go the right way for you guys against Dallas. Losing game one was really obviously because you don’t win a single game on the road through the entire playoffs. That has to change like you can’t clearly if you have home ice advantage you can’t go seven games all the time. So, um I’m I’m sure 50 and one is not a reality for the second year in a row and maybe a president’s trophy a little challenging to throw out there, but they they can have that where they’re just like so brutal on the road and just have these these ridiculous splits between home and and yes, home ice advantage is such a big part, but if you’re a great team, you find ways to win on the road and they that what happened to them on the road last year would just just it’s it’s irrelevant like it just can’t happen again. So, a lot is on him again. But that first series win massive and I believe he felt I felt he looked a lot more like himself in round two against Dallas. Yeah. Well, that’s a great point because yeah, six and one at home. Well, 0 and6 on the road and they got outscored 27-9. It was in like it doesn’t even make sense. Like it’s just it’s mindboggling what happened. And they were the best team on the road in the regular season. So, and one of the highest scoring teams in the NHL. So, as much as we again, if you didn’t watch the series, and I’m lots of I’m sure lots of people did because of how physical it was. It was insane how that was like 80s physicality uh from start to finish in that series. And clearly there was a lot of wounded Warriors from the from the Jets as they went into round two against Dallas. But, you know, you can’t go and six. You can’t even go 0 and three in the first round. It’s just it doesn’t you you will not have success. It was just that you willed yourself to a game seven win and then you you fed off that emotion. So, um, it’s the eyes and the pressure certainly is is on Connor Hellbuck again and like how do you follow up a hard trophy season? That’s that’s the other interesting part where where is when is Connor Hellabuk going to start being and I hate comparing him to this, but Sergey Babski who just couldn’t seem to get it done in the playoffs. Had great, you know, one couldn’t get it done in the playoffs. Now he’s at Sebell at a much older age. Um, clearly one of the best goalies in the playoffs right now. So, where does what does Connor Hellbuck have to do mentally, physically, or whatever to get to that level where he can will teams once again will the Jets to wins in the playoffs? So, um, personally, I feel like that that getting that St. Louis series out of the way, but now that all eyes are on him again, whether you believe that’s fair or not, but that’s just the way the world works. And he’s going to have to answer the bell again when when the playoffs start next April. Yeah. And and I think honestly, I’m sure if we asked him, he he’d want the focus, right? like you you want you want that opportunity every time you you can’t shy away from it. You mentioned maybe he got over a hurdle, but when you’re outscored 27 to9 on the road, it’s not just your goalend, right? Like the whole road game has to get better. No, like the the goals they would give up in bunches was it was I’m sure Scott Arneal must have been wondering what’s happening. Like what they seem so mentally tough at home but would be fragile on the road and that to me was so telling. the fact that they just did everything they could to win game seven when it looked like it was over. And I I think personally I think they they used up a lot of energy. The city used up a lot of energy when that game seven and they didn’t have anything in game one on home ice against Dallas. And that was like really clearly what what steered the series in Dallas’s favor. Not to take anything away from him, but you know, Scott Neil looked really disappointed after game one. I think he knew, especially with their struggles on the road, that that was like a a a series changer losing that first game against Dallas. another another season’s on our way here and there are other things to worry about. Now, Jamie Thomas joins us. Uh JT, when you look at at this Jets team, you know, obviously they’re very competitive. They’re in a very competitive division with Dallas and Colorado, you know, St. Louis and Minnesota. There there wasn’t a a huge amount of offseason change. You know, obviously Jonathan Taves is the big one, right? Uh he hasn’t played in a while. Have you had a chance to talk to him? What’s your expectations and what’s a realistic expectation for Tes, right? I I think he answered it best when he had his initial media availability here in Winnipeg. It’s just like he doesn’t know what to expect right now. And certainly if he doesn’t know what to expect, the Jets can’t expect that either, right? So that’s clearly why his contract is incentive laden as it is because neither party knows what to expect. But here’s the thing, you don’t have Adam Lowry probably late into November, too. So you’ve lost your number one defensive center. You’re one of your best penalty killers and clearly your emotional leader. So that really puts the onus and you know that like Jonathan Taz like he has are you going to have to you know is he going to have to have extra nights off because he hasn’t played or what’s his but I don’t I don’t think that’s going to come into play but he is going to have to take over that second line and it looks like at this point in you know it’s going to be Gustav Nyquist and Cole Proffetti to probably start camp on the second line for the Jets and then a lot more pressure goes on Jonathan Ta’s uh you know one of the best faceoff guys in the league too before his two-year hiatus. you know, they’re going to count on him to penalty kill as well. So, I don’t know how many minutes they’re going to lean on him for, but without Adam Lowry, they’re going to probably have to lean on him hard. Uh cuz that shifts Morgan Baron into the middle and also Vladislav Nomestikov. So, I don’t know how that fits out in lines three and four. But, a lot of pressure is going to be on Jonathan TA and what he’s going to have to be able to bring uh for Winnipeg this upcoming season after being away from the game for so long. How long is Lowry out? He Well, they they thought initially thought November. So, I mean, that’s a significant stretch without October. So, maybe, you know, like they’re hoping November. Um, you know, you skating here the other day. Um, you know, looked okay, but I mean, coming back from hip surgery, it’s it’s a different story, right? So, we’re going to have to wait and see on that one, but I’m I’m expecting November uh at the latest. Okay. So, uh and hip surgery, you never like even when he comes back, you’re back, but you’re not really back if you know what I mean. No, like he was stiff when he was skating when I was watching him. So, it’s just I mean, clearly these guys, they’re young and all that stuff like that. And time will tell how long this is going to take, but I think clearly they’re just expecting November and hoping that’s that’s the best case scenario at this point, but it’s just it’s just such a massive void. I I just, you know, I hate to go back to Dallas, the Dallas series again, but you know, Shley takes that penalty in overtime and they score. And I see, you know, Adam Lowry is the first guy to greet Shley coming out of the penalty box after they give up the goal in in overtime. And he just said I didn’t want him to be, you know, be alone. Like that to me is he’s the emotional leader of this team that they’ve needed for so long. And to not have him on the ice and off the ice is going to be I I think a challenge to start the year. Jamie Thomas joins us uh talking Winnipeg Jets. Um you What about you know the amount of starts for Hella? Will will we see that reduced? Does that is that does that matter? I here’s the thing. Like I I thought, you know, they would kind of massage it a little bit because Four Nations face off, but it really didn’t change that much. They were so they were so far ahead and and and the problem was is that Dallas really made a charge towards the end that made it hard for them to to rest him. So I don’t know how does this look if he goes to Italy for the Olympics, which I mean, you’d be crazy to think he’s not going. and and how much does he play um in that aspect too. So, um I I don’t listen, man. I know you and I have had this conversation many many many times over many seasons now. I just don’t I don’t see it changing because they’re just there what people don’t see is the days off that he gets, right? They’ll they’ll they’ll they’ll have a practice, but Hellabuk won’t skate. Uh morning skates sometimes they’ll take them off, right? So, it’s just the way that Wade Flity and him have worked out this schedule and the understanding what he needs and what he doesn’t need. um has kind of they kind of figured it out now with the Olympic schedule being as tight as it is. Um you know, much like last year, but there’s going to be a lot more teams and a lot less nights. Um how does that work out? So, uh buddy, to be to answer your question, I’m still expecting 65 67 games. Um Eric Hry is more than capable to play. Um but it all depends. you you just said it moments ago, the competitiveness of the Central Division is going to make it really challenging for the Jets to give him the nights off maybe that they want to because you can’t tell me Nashville is going to be as terrible as they were last year. And I think we saw what St. Louis is going to be in that opening round series where they gave Winnipeg everything they could handle. So, uh, you could really look only and then Utah, right? So, it’s just I I know Utah is still not there yet, but they’re not they’re not far away. and Chicago’s really the only one you could probably have an off night and still win games. So, I I think the competitiveness of the Central Division and certainly the Western Conference is going to make it really hard for them to not play him 65 67 times this year. Uh, one last one. Uh, Dylan Samberg played Unreal in the playoffs. He was unreal. He he was probably their best their best defenseman. What’s your expectation for him? Was that just like a coming out party for Samberg? Yeah, I think so. And listen, it it helps that you have the right version of Neil Pian, right? Um to alongside they found a nice pairing between those two, but that’s I mean I I’m not I’m I cannot take away the the jump that Dylan Samberg has made. I remember a glaring error he made in game three against Vegas in the playoffs that led to a goal in overtime and that turned out series and you could just his body lang he was devastated and that that shook him up for a bit and from the player that that happened was right there to the day the player we have today is night and day and I I think we’re just starting to see you know how important he is uh to the Winnipeg Jets um on the back end because he was gone for 20ome games they’re their game dropped off defensively big time and certainly on the penalty kill too. So he’s an important penalty shot blocker or penalty killer as well. But yeah, you you said it best. He’s a coming out party. He’s not going to be scoring 40 points every 40 to 50 points, but he’ll be as good a shutdown defenseman as there is in the league right now. And um will be leaned on heavily this year, certainly in those big central division matchups and uh whenever Conor McDavid and Leon Dry settle end up running against the Jets. JT, always good to catch up with you, buddy. We uh we look forward to talking to you again, man. Have a great one. Yeah. Enjoy your uh lead up to lead up to the season, my friend. We’ll talk to you soon. You betcha. That’s Jamie Thomas, Winnipeg Jets host and uh podcast of ground control courtesy out of Winnipeg. So now Connor Halabuk there. Hey, there’s huge expectations on Halibuck and but those numbers for the Jets were wild last year. Absolutely wild. 0 and6 in the playoffs outscored 27-9. In the in the regular season, they were 26-5 and the most wins of any team in the league on the road, the regular season, and then suddenly get to the playoffs, completely different story. Man, that’s what makes sports so awesome, but has to be at times just infuriatingly frustrating for a fan base because you go into the playoffs, no Jets fan would have thought their team would be an absolute ghost on the road after going 26 and 15 just didn’t make any sense. That’s why there’s no guarant when someone tells you, “Oh, for sure they’re going to win that.” You don’t know. That’s what makes it so awesome. I’ve always said the best reality TV is sports because you never know what can happen. How many Bills fans thought the game was over last night? How many Ravens fans thought the game was over? Hope you are having a lovely, lovely Monday afternoon. Sports fans, you probably just need a nap because there was so much going on this past weekend. First weekend of the NFL, you had the great game uh for the Elks. You had Al Carz becoming the youngest player to ever win six majors in tennis. The only one he hasn’t won is the Australian Open. He’s won each of the other three twice so far in his young career at the age of 22. You had Max Stappen, fastest lap ever, fastest race ever on that track. Um, you know, college football a little bit quiet of a week because not uh not a huge amount of upsets. There was a few, but uh nothing like the the opening week. Got Major League Baseball, the push to the playoffs. You got uh junior football going on. Had the cross town rivalry, the Huskys defeating the Wildcats 24 to 20. They’ll go at it again uh this weekend. So check that out. Uh I know both the Cats and the Huskys alumni always enjoy going back there uh reliving their youth depending on your age and just remembering some good times when you played there. So uh should be a lot of fun. And of course coming up the the Elks on the road and they could get back. Well, they’re already tied for a playoff spot right now with BC. They’re one game back of Winnipeg for third in the Western Conference. So, a huge game against Toronto because if the Elks win that puts them two games up on Toronto in the crossover, which is key because remember in the crossover you have to have more points than the Eastern team. If you’re tied for points, same record, the East team gets in. So, yeah, that’s a big win or big game, excuse me, coming up for the Elks this Saturday, one:00 start time. You can catch that on the television. Now, let’s get to the two-minute warning with Camtate. Brought to you by Legacy Heating and Cooling where you always Yeah, you’re looking for great deals on furnace, but you know what? You want to extend the life of your furnace, get maintenance. Check it out. It’ll help you. Well, more importantly, it’ll help your furnace. Maintenance right now at legacy heating.ca. Cam Tate, longtime uh in town. Cam, of course, was born with cerebral palsy. He’s in a wheelchair due to his disability. was never able to uh to speak on the radio. However, due to the wonders of technology, Cam’s words come to life now in the two-minute warning. Here on the two-minute warning, we’re often talking about the wins, the losses, the saves, the goals, the fleeting moments of glory on the ice, but sometimes sometimes the game’s greatest lessons aren’t about what happens in the heat of a moment. They’re about what happens after the buzzer has sounded. News of Ken Dryden’s passing this weekend at age 78 took a chunk out of the hearts of Canadians everywhere. A legend, a champion, an icon. But what made him truly legendary wasn’t just the six Stanley Cups or the five Vzna trophies. It was the man behind the mask. Years ago, on a cold Edmonton night, I found myself in a moment of sheer panic outside Clare View Arena. My interview with Ken Dryden, a 30-inute feature I’d spent weeks preparing, was gone. Just blank air on my recorder. I wheeled back, fully prepared for a frustrated look or a curt dismissal. After all, I knew he was already running 3 hours behind schedule. But what I got was simply grace. He simply sighed, a soft, weary sound, and much like his signature Montreal Canadian stance, it looked like he cupped his goal stick in both hands, rested his chin on the goal stick engulfed with black tape, and just looked around, taking everything in, and then he led me back to the dressing room. He sat in the exact same spot with remarkable patience, not only remembered the questions I had asked, but answered them again in the same order. His assistant kept looking at his watch, but Ken Dryden seemed to have all the time in the world. And then some. He taught me that night that time isn’t measured in minutes and hours, but in how we give it. It’s about slowing down, being generous with our time, and forgiving the mistakes of others, even when you’re 3 hours behind. So, how do we honor a legend like Ken Dryden? We slow down. We share our time with others. We extend grace. And we remember that the greatest saves are often made off the ice. Rest well, Mr. Dryden. Rest well. For the twominute warning, this is Cam Tate. That Ken Dryden was was a very classy uh player. Uh obviously extremely patient, um very very reflective and had a had a an unreal career. Think about it. Five Vznes. He won six Stanley Cups. He won a Calder. He won the Con Smite. They only played nine years in the league. Like he had a great career. And right kind of in the in the prime of his career, he sat out for a full season because he couldn’t negotiate the contract with Montreal. Didn’t give in. And he went and articled for a year in school. You know, he had his principles and just said, “Hey, no problem. This is what I’m going to do because I want to I want to get it. I want to be done with it.” and he was able to, you know, he was a great hockey player, but hockey was never like his full-time only thing. He obviously had other aspirations and other interests, went on to be an author, uh, politician, was a was a huge spokesperson for a long time for for many, many different things. you know, he’s always, you know, and and challenging is probably cuz some people think when you challenge something, you always got to be yell, you know, boisterous and yelling and no, he would just always he would question things in a way to just say, “Hey, is this the best way to go? Should we be doing this?” And you you always left a conversation with Ken being like, “hm, I got more questions and I want to go look at things.” which which I found uh very insightful and was always was always an honor to have him on the show. So, we’ll miss him and definitely wish uh him uh and uh well, not him, he’s passed on, but his family all the best in uh in grieving his loss because uh he was a huge part of of hockey both as a player and then uh later on after his career. Now, I got a little trivia question, and I’m curious how many of you might know the answer to this one. Uh, including my uh two gentlemen here sitting to my right in the studio, Connor Hley and Declan Krueger. On the weekend, uh, yesterday on Sunday, Derk Henry passed Jim Brown. Tyler Remchuk, Jim Brown is one of the all-time great running backs, just in case you uh, forgot. But, uh, Derrick Henry, uh, his 107th and 108th rushing touchdowns of his career. There’s five guys ahead of him. Can you guys name the five running backs with more career rushing touchdowns? LT. Oh, yeah. He’s one. He’s Do you know how Do you know where he he ranks amongst the top five? Uh, is he second behind EMTT? He is. Okay. So, you know the top two, right? Do you know who’s three, four, and five? Zachlin, you got any guesses? Well, I think Frank Gore is sneaky in there because I think this is going to be one of those traps and he had all those yards. Well, he did, but Frank Gore is not ahead of him. Adrien Peterson, he is fourth. Okay. With 120. Walter Peyton, he is fifth with 110. So, we’re just missing number three. You’re missing number three. This is rushing touchdowns only. Rushing touchdowns only. Keep in mind, Earl Campbell. Uh, good guess. Incorrect. Marshall Faulk. Uh, nope. You got Jim Brown there already. Jim Brown is uh Jim Brown is currently seventh because he has 106. Derrick Henry is sixth with 108 now. Walter Paintton is fifth, 110. Then AP, Harry Peterson has 120. One guy at 123. Then LT is at 145 and EMTT Smith’s at 164. God, that’s going to be hard to catch. It couldn’t be Barry. He didn’t play long enough. No, it’s not Barry. No. Bettis the bus. Nope. OJ. A good guy. Nope. Guys are really going through the list. I like it. We got a lot of We got Priest Holmes guesses. No, he only had a couple years. Uh, do you want me to give it to you? Can we have a hint for Yeah. How about a team or something? Did I give it away? Well, his brother was very good. Oh, Marcus Allen. There you go. Marcus Allen 123. So, when you look at you look at Derrick Henry, he’s obviously he’s going to pass Walter Payeyton this year because he needs two more. Well, three more to pass him, right? He would need 14 more touchdowns to uh No, what’s he at? 108? No, he would need 13 more touchdowns to pass Adrien Peterson. Probably realistic, right? If he stays healthy for him to finish a year with 15, right? So then, you know, he’s probably at least I think bare minimum he’s going to be third because he’ll pass Marcus Allen, Adrien Peterson, Walter Peyton. Like, man, like the big man was rumbling yesterday, too. Like it was so funny how it almost looked like the Bills players like they didn’t want to tackle him. And I get it, like the guy is a force and then had that fumble, which which was massive. But, you know, for the whole game where it didn’t even look like they’re making any contact and then boom. Um he’s so scary, Gregor, because like you try to tackle him low, he can hurdle you. Yeah. You go too high, he you’re going to get stiff armed. Like you come towards the knees, you might take a knee at the mask and that’s going to probably knock you out of the game. Like he’s just such an imposing figure. Spends a quarter million dollars every year to keep the body right. Unfortunate fumble for Ravens fans, but yeah, he’s he’s still got it. There were so many times in that game Deck and I were talking about where you thought this is over. No way the Bills come back from this one. And then end of the game, no doubt about it. Josh Allen was not losing that game. 251 passing yards in the fourth quarter. Just unbelievable. Yeah. No, it’s Well, yeah. He had 251 in one quarter. Yeah. Nuts. Like what happened to the Ravens defense? I mean, you know, like I’m People aren’t talking about it because it was just such a good performance from both sides offensively. Do both these defenses now have a lot of question marks or is it just two elite quarterbacks doing their thing? Well, I think it’s two elite quarterbacks. Uh it’s also early in the season, but like those two quarterbacks like there were times like you look at there was times where I thought the Ravens had pretty good coverage and Allen just threw the perfect pass. Yeah. And and then there’s other times like both of those guys are so hard to take down, right? Where you look like, hey, maybe you got him and you don’t have him. Like that one run by Lamar Jackson when he ended up being like 19 yards behind the line of scrimmage and then just wheels up the field. Like he is so quick. He’s like who do you think’s f like who’s faster in the NFL than Lamar Jackson? Like I’d love to know cuz there can’t be that many. No, there wouldn’t be. No. and like factor like game speed and agility because he he’ll beat you side to side and then he has the straight line speed to really pull away as well. So I don’t know who would be there right now but not many that’s for sure. No no uh not many at all. So it’s uh it’s very very impressive. What’s also impressive is uh audience thank you very much. First of all, he only played nine years. He won six cups. He won five Vznas. He won a K smite. He won a Calder Trophy. Like, what an unbelievable career and was only nine years long. But then there was the author of Ken Dryen. Then the politician of Ken Dryden. Like really, he’s kind of almost like any other NHL player we’ve ever seen when you consider his on ice career and his post career. You’re right about that. And uh while I was um listening to you guys on uh on the internet, I was writing down some some qualities that I that I know personally from Ken Brighton, and I’m still writing them down, Jason. Uh he was uh he was an amazing human human being. uh and and the fact that he came on board uh in such an unusual time, an unexpected time, and in such an unusual way, it just makes his career uh as as more flamboyant. I mean, not too many players in this league actually get the coms trophy before they get the CGER trophy. So, it’s uh I mean it was it was it was almost like it was bound to happen this way uh for Ken Dryden. And without betraying my age, but I don’t mind doing so. Uh I am old enough to have to have lived Ken Brighton’s contribution uh in the very very early stage of his career as a teenager and and you probably guess how easy it was for us teenagers at the time. Yeah. uh to to go ballistic for for the Habs because actually Jason the Bruins were the the best team in the league uh in the late 60s and early 70s. So the cup in 71 was some sort of a an unbelievable thing that happened and mostly happened because of Ken Dryden’s play uh being rep recalled after uh almost a full season in the AHL. Yeah. No, it’s true. Like I think people feel like oh Montreal’s great and they were but the Bobby or Phil Espazito uh you know and and company 71 72 like those Bruins teams 70 they 69 they were unreal they were loaded with great players and then a rookie goalie kind of comes out of nowhere and funny enough a rookie goalie who was originally drafted by the Boston. There you go. It was Yeah. how how big of a coincidence at the time. And um and to see uh a young Canadian goalie uh from Hamilton going the university way was not uh was not a typical pattern at the time also. So everything was was a bit peculiar about this tall guy. Uh even his physique I mean Roi Vashon uh Jason was the uh the number one goalie for the Habs. Phil Mir was the uh the backup although they almost played half and half that that year and uh Sam Pollock and the whole organization although they liked those two goalies they didn’t have total confidence in them and and maybe in a way without telling it telling it maybe they were not so sure about making a long run in the playoffs so they decided to get Dried on the board and we all know what happened all those miracle saves against the Bruins and of course the uh the miracle saves against the uh the Blackhawks in in the Stanley Cup final. Of course, the one we see all the time uh on on replays is the one on Jim Patton. Yeah. Uh when you as you got to know Ken really when you look at him as a player and it was really a brief career when we consider careers of of Hall of Fame players, nine seasons, but it’s hard to get better than six cups and five Vznes and the Calder and the K Smite as you mentioned before he was even a rookie for goodness sakes. But then, you know, he went on to be an author and even in his postplay career, he was always kind of like the rational voice of the NHL. Yeah. And it’s interesting that you put it this way because after his career, of course, and and if you look at his uh at his pedigree uh as a member of parliament and what he’s done uh in in not so long stint as a politician, he’s done a lot. And I was reading some reviews from colleagues and not not necessarily from uh from member of parliament or or or ministers, but also from people within the uh the government family and they all say and and they all talk so fondly about how generous he was, how caring about others uh he was. And believe me, I had the privilege to uh uh to uh to be with Ken Brighton uh a few times after his career. And all of that is so true. He was a very passionate person. He was a person that was first and foremost true to himself, Jason. And this is why he made some odd decisions in his career. And this is probably why he decided to quit very early at the prime of his performance and the prime of that team. He was a man true to himself, no compromise type of man, but a very calm and peaceful force. And that’s what he brought not only uh to his after career, but this is what he brought into the Habs dressing room as well. That dressing room was full of young players that would ultimately be the stars of this dynasty of the mid70s through the late 70s. So, he played a huge role. But I may I remind you that 1771 was the last season of Jean Bilivo. It was already Yeah. granted that Jean Bilivo would hang up after the the season. So Dryen came with his not only with his spectacular play with but with this poise with his composure and he brought some sort of a leadership which is not uh which is not very peculiar from a goalender. I think you agree on this. Oh you know. Yeah. It’s it’s very true. And you know, the other thing kind of dating back to to when he was drafted in uh in 1964, but then like it wasn’t much longer, like I think it was only a week or maybe even less that he got traded to Montreal for Paul Reed and I think it was Gee Allen or Guy Allen. Um and like it I don’t now obviously when he when he got drafted now he was he was 14th overall pick so it was pretty high pick for a goalie. Like did do you know like why what happened what led to that trade? Like why would the Bruins do that? Yeah. Well, the Bruins had two outstanding goalenders. They they had Eddie Johnston and they had Jerry Chvers in the system. So, uh maybe it was uh and maybe it was a matter of uh saying, “Well, he’s is disposable, quote unquote. We are going with the goalenders that make the Brun the the winning team that they are.” And as you said and and we repeat, the Bruins should have been at least a repeat Stanley Cup uh winner, but Dryden decided to do uh to do something else and to do and to decide a different path uh when he when he came on board. So this was a huge blessing for the Habs. Uh you may also remember that Sam Pollock was some sort of a magician as a GM. So, so Sam Pollock had his own way of of doing things. Uh, so it’s it’s probably a blend of all that, but most of all, I think the Bruins thought that they were they were okay. Well, more than okay. They were actually spoiled uh in front of the net for many, many years to come. Well, and what’s unique about it is so Ken got drafted, then he played for Atobbico uh the following season, then he went to Cornell for for four years, right? Uh, and then he even uh he played one year with the the Canadian uh national team back when the Canadian national team had it. Then he finally joined the Canadians organization in uh 7071 and was there in the minor leagues until he got called up and I was it did he play five or six games before the playoffs? Is that right? In the regular season he he actually played six games. Six. Okay. And and he ended up with a six and0 record, a 165 goals against average and a 957 percentage. Yeah. So, not bad. Not bad to come in as a raw rookie. It It wasn’t bad. And and the other thing is that the uh the the Voyagers at the time, the AHL team, uh the team was playing in Montreal as well. So, it was quite easy to have some sort of a of a feel. Well, more than a feel actually. You you you you could see what eventually would come up from from Ken Dryen. Now, I was young at the time. I don’t know if the uh the the most advised scout was at was actually able to to see how far he could go. I’m I’m not sure about that. I think that some of it came as the as a huge stunning surprise and uh it just kept going on and on and on and on uh for the uh the rest of his as you said not so long career after all. Now, his he did have a brief stint with the uh with the Maple Leafs in the uh in the late 90s, correct? Um but didn’t last it didn’t last very long. Like it’s he had such a I know he did a little bit of color commentating on the on the Winter Olympics and I think he was there for the Miracle on Ice if I’m not mistaken in 1980. Obviously, he wrote all his books, but um did you ever talk to Ken about, you know, like was there something about kind of management that just didn’t didn’t suit him? why he didn’t stick long in the NHL post career playing. Well, no, I I I’ll be very honest with you, I never had the uh the opportunity to address this situation, but uh honestly, knowing uh knowing the man and and if I come back to the um some of those qualities uh I’ I’ve I’ve told you about uh since we began our discussion, I think he wasn’t made for hockey management. and you know, uh, you end up Maple Leaf’s president. We understand it’s not the easiest task on earth, but I’m not sure he was made for that. I’m not sure he was fit for that. I think that Ken Dryden was uh probably unable at one point to not be all the time true to himself, true to his beliefs, and true true to what he thought deeply. And as you know, at some point in in hockey management, uh especially on the hockey front, you have to play the game. And I’m not talking about the hockey game. I’m talking about the the GM game. I’m talking about, uh playing quote unquote the hockey politics. I’m not so sure he was made for that. I’m not so sure he wanted that. I think that what he wanted was to be Ken Dryden. And he probably found out sooner than later that uh he he probably belonged to start with in the public life serving the public as a as a as a politician than as a a hockey manager. And I think he he made the the right decisions all the time. And you have to remember Jason that you know he decided to quit in the 7374 season. Yeah. Of course. Of course, he went to to get his license at McGill University, but at the same time, I think we all know the other side of the story. He was not happy with the money he was offered from the team. He said, “Well, is that if that’s the way it is, I’m going to finish my uh my license in in law and I will be I will become a lawyer.” And then when he quit in 1979 before the 7980 season, I personally think that Ken Dryden was was actually very aware of what’s coming up. The Habs had an in an inside turmoil. You remember the Jacare Daflur? Yes. Conflicts. The Islanders were on the rise. Bill Tory was was actually the the new enemy for for Sam Paulock. The Habs finally met their match on all fronts on the ring and in and in the offices. And I think that Ken saw that coming and he decided it was time to quit and that he had done enough and he wanted to be once again true to his own beliefs and to what he was actually uh feeling around the team. It’s very interesting that um you you mentioned Pierre Pierre who joins us a longtime voice of the Montreal Canadians. We’re talking about the life of Ken Dryen who passed away this past weekend at the age of 78. Fantastic NHL career. Played nine seasons, won six Stanley Cup, won the Vzna five times. Also won the Calder and the Cons. Unbelievable. all in a nine-year span that you know it didn’t maybe wasn’t necessarily suited for kind of like the politics of of management but he went into real life politics which somewhat hard might even be harder. Yeah. And that that says a lot about the man Jason. Yeah. You know, it’s a it takes an extremely clear-cut internal force to go in unusual directions and to say no to obvious quote unquote directions. And that’s that’s the man he was. Now, the other thing that I want to uh to uh to put the emphasize on is that we always talked about Sir Shavard, right? the senator, his nickname that he rightfully so uh deserves because of his special way of looking at things. Sir, the leader, the quiet leader, serve the uh the businessman, the uh the player who learned earlier than most other players to invest wisely and to develop his own equity and and you know and and his own life in this respect. Well, you know what? and and Serge was so so sad this weekend because I think that Serge actually had an amazing ally with this attitude in the room. I think that the two of them were were combining their peaceful approach, their calculated approach and this this sort of wisdom that they were able to bring to the dressing room. And I think that Sergey learned a lot from from Ken Dryden. And if there is one thing, Jason, I I would have wished for Dryden’s career is to have shined a little bit better in those uh international games that we got to discover in the 70s. Of course, he won game number eight of the Summit Suri, but he was not the flashiest player on the ice. I got to remember and to do modern calls of that famous December 31st, 1975 game at the forum between the Red Army and the Canadians. Ken actually was outplayed by Vladislavak who was the star on the ice and but but what I like about Ken is that he never shied away from those things. He said, you know, it’s not going I’m not going to take that for too long in my life, in my career. I I I I was part of a of a team. I was part of a reality that I was not I was not optim optim optimally or or ultimately able to to perform at the top level like he did uh in playoffs in regular seasons. But uh I think on that front he still deserves a little bit more credit than he got uh in those key international games. Yeah. When you think back of his career and and how would you sum it up? The Jim Papin save game seven 1971. Can I give you a little insight on my own life, Jason? 100%. Until that moment, my late brother Paul, who’s very well known in Quebec because he was in broadcasting for 50 years as well, he was already a Blackhawk fan. Okay. And you know, and you know about me, I was a Toronto Maple Leafs fan. Wow. Yeah. Wow. And I don’t know, I mean, in the 60s when I was a kid, I I I could root for one heck of a team, you know, the the four Stanley Cups for for the Leafs. But that particular spring, I became a Habs fan as a teenager. And the number one reason was Ken Ryden. The most amazing saves he was actually able to repeat night after night, game after game, including game seven against Chicago in the old Chicago stadium. For me, if you want, a lot of people will will remember his quiet uh uh how do you say stand on his stick? Do I say it correctly? you know that. Oh yeah. Yeah, that’s that’s I actually saw somebody say because the NBA has Jerry West and their logo and people said they should have the Ken Dryden standing on a stick as the NHL logo. Yeah. Well Well, I understand that and and I understand that for most of his fans and most of the people that are grieving today, that’s what they remember. But me that miraculous save on Jim Patton was the uh the ultimate save that actually led to Jacel tying the game and to Rashard’s scoring uh the game a goal number two and the winning goal that made the Habs a 3-2 winner in that ultimate game. That was absolutely amazing. And it was pretty it was it was in May. It was pretty hot uh for for uh an early May uh spring, but so on my street all the windows were open on the uh on my uh suburb street, my suburb of Montreal, and you could hear the people scream like crazy when the Ari Rashard scored the scored the the game-winning goal. But everybody was talking about Ken Dryden and what he brought uh to the NHL in general because it was more than bringing to the Habs. It was actually what he brought to to the league. Unique style, unique physique, not the best technical goaler, but uh one of the most absolutely greatest competitors for sure. Pierre, fantastic stuff. I really appreciate this. We’ll talk to you again soon. And next time I might have to talk a little F1 with you as well. That’ll be fun. Well, that’ll be fun. We had the one heck of a race in Monza and we’re having one one heck of a championship race. So, uh, anytime you got my number. You betcha. Thanks, Pierre. That is Pierre Hood, a longtime voice of the Montreal Canadians, and he’s been doing F1 on RDS in Montreal since 1993. And just a great recap of uh, Ken Dryen. And honestly, when you think of NHL careers, it is hard to think of anybody who played nine years, won six cups, five Beznes. How many goalies in NHL history have won five veznas, never mind in nine years. Also the Consmite and the Calder. He might I have to look. He might be the only player in NHL history to have six cups, five Beznes, a Calder, and a Consmite. I look at but I I’d be pretty confident in saying that. We’ll double check it during the break, but it’s not many guys who have six cups and there’s definitely not many guys who have five asmos. So, we’ll see. I’m good. I’m good. How are you? I am I’m excellent. And it’s uh it’s hot in here. And uh it’s interesting in Minnesota, we got the Monday night of the final game of the week in the National Football League. And it’s the Vikings and the Bears. And it’s the Vikings who last year had a 14 and3 unreal year. Obviously didn’t end the want the way they wanted. And now they got the rookie quarterback. And you know, we haven’t seen a ton of them in preeason. So do you know what to even expect from JJ McCarthy tonight? I I wish I did. I wish I did. We know that uh you know obviously the Viking staff think of the world of him, but what quarterback staff doesn’t think the world of the quarterback they just got. Um so that doesn’t really tell us much, right? We know that uh you know over the past year I mean he’s been injured, so he’s had a lot to work on u you know from a rehab perspective. We know um that you know he’s picked up the playbook a lot faster than I think a lot of rookie quarterbacks typically do. And this is a a somewhat complicated playbook to pick up. we know from Kevin Oonnell, the head coach, his history that he doesn’t really uh restrict the playbook for quarterbacks that are coming in are just new. And so that um that understanding is pretty impressive. That could be, you know, kind of a a detriment kind of going forward. If we know that he’s not adapting the playbook, but so far it doesn’t look like that that’s a necessity. So, the reports that we have from practices, from the preeason, from the way that teammates talk about him, they’re all pretty positive. But honestly, all of that’s not really going to matter until we actually play some games. So, I don’t want to, you know, put anything out there to tell us that, you know, he’s going to be a good player or anything like that so far. But, you know, the signs are are weakly positive, I guess, is maybe the best way to put it. The We know that obviously Jefferson’s the number one guy and Addison is out for a bit. Uh, what do you make of the overall depth of the receiving core? Is it deep enough here to wait until Addison gets back? And who do you think’s going to be number two? Uh, it’s not extraordinarily deep, but that is why the Vikings did make a move. They traded for, uh, a player who’d been with the Vikings for a long time, Adam Thielen, uh, from the Carolina Panthers. He’s pretty familiar with the system. He actually is also familiar with the quarterback because he worked out with them in the offseason. Maybe he anticipated the trade or something. I don’t know. Um, but you know, he is, you know, he’s coming off of, you know, a pretty reasonably good season, but he is 35 years old, so there are going to be some kind of limitations to what you’d be able to do. Jordan Addison is a really fast deep threat style receiver, and I don’t know that you can really expect the same from Adam Theland. And so, while they have improved the depth by adding him, you have to ask questions like, you know, Jaylen Naylor, who suffered a little bit of an injury in practices, is he going to be ready to go? Was he kind of resolved his drop problems? is somebody like a Tai Felton, the third round rookie that they drafted this year. Is he going to be ready to go? It didn’t look like he was going to be ready given practices in preseason. And another player that they were planning on having, he’s out for the year, Rondale Moore. Um, you know, he was supposed to be somebody that might have been able to add a speed element to their game, but you know, he got injured in the preseason. And so that that depth is is a significant concern. But on the other side of it, they do have uh tight ends TJ Hawinson and Josh Oliver who have the ability to kind of pick up in the receiving game. So, while I wouldn’t say the depth is the most extraordinary thing in the world, you do worry about that a little bit less when you’ve got a dominant player like Justin Jefferson, and you do have some other receiving options like Aaron Jones, like T.J. Hawinson that are going to kind of let you spread the ball around a little bit. Arian joining us here on the Jason Greater Show, taking a look around the NFL. Connor Hley here. Arif, just looking at the defensive side of the ball for the Minnesota Vikings. I think there might have been a a bit of an emphasis to to beef it up in the trenches. Jonathan Allen, Javon Hargrave coming over in free agency. What are your expectations for this defensive unit playing in a division with a lot of offensive firepower? Yeah, I’m I’m kind of curious because while they’ve made that investment up front, and I think that those are all really excellent additions. Um, they’ve kind of, you know, for lack of a better word, neglected some of the stuff on the back end, you know, the quarterbacks and the safeties, Harrison Smith won’t be available for this game. He’s out with an illness. We don’t really know what the what the details of that are, but there was some chance he might have been available. he’s not. And that’s going to really hurt their defensive back, you know, top end talent as well as their depth. And so it’s really going to be um, you know, put upon that that defensive line group with Javon Harra, Jonathan Allen to really put pressure up front to prevent the quarterback from having the time that he might need in order to kind of exploit some of those weaknesses. And so, while I think that those additions are are significant upgrades, they did come at a cost. And so, I’m kind of concerned about whether or not, you know, they’ll be able to kind of make up for for that deficiency of the back end. But I think just as as as just pure talent players, you know, they’re they’re really astounding players. Jonathan Allen, one of the top 10 defensive tackles over the past couple of years, Javon Harra, really good pass rusher. And then, of course, they have this edge rushing unit, both of whom have been to the proh Pro Bowl, Jonathan Bernard, Andrew Van Ginkle, plus they’ve got a first round rookie behind him. So, a ton of talent, uh, you know, rushing the passers. Just are they going to get to the quarterback fast enough for that to matter? And tonight, the opposing quarterback is Caleb Williams. Obviously, the first overall pick last year for the Chicago Bears. And I look at his statistic, you know, it wasn’t a terrible season. 20 touchdowns, just six interceptions. Not as good as Jaden Daniels or Bo Knicks by any means, but what are your expectations for Caleb Williams entering year two? Yeah, the real question mark is is kind of how much work he’s put in. And this would typically not be a question mark for somebody, you know, tagged as the first overall pick, but a report recently came out um that one of the problems that he had with the previous coaching staff was his inability to kind of put in the work and and develop and continue with the offense. And if he doesn’t do that, he’s already hit a ceiling. I think that you’re right that his rookie year wasn’t that bad, but that’s pretty good for a rookie year. Once you enter your second, third, fourth year, the expectation rises and and the talent needs to kind of and the production needs to rise with that. If he doesn’t do that, they’re not going to be able to do much. But on the other side, if they did, you know, with that new coaching staff, you know, find ways to motivate him, bring him into an offense that better takes advantage of a skill sets, um, then it could be a real problem because as a natural talent, Caleb Williams is almost unparalleled among the young quarterbacks that we have in the NFL right now. And obviously not quite the same in terms of natural talent as you know your Mahomes, your Allens’s, uh your your Lamar Jackson, but I think only Jaden Daniels as a natural talent can can live up to what he can physically do on the field. He’s got incredible elusiveness. His arm strength is astounding. His spatial awareness is incredible. And that spatial awareness is why he’s been compared to somebody like Apach Mahomes who has the ability to kind of create these plays out of nothing. It’s really difficult to get a handle on what Caleb Williams is going to do from play to play as a defender. And if he can take advantage of that, he can harness that uh and and you know exploit some of the spaces that are going to be available in this defense, then it’s going to be a really long night for the Vikings. But until that happens, until he can play both within structure and outside of structure, it’s going to be really tough for them to put up a ton of points on the board. Looking at the uh you talked about the Vikings, can they get to the quarterback? you know, DeAndre Swift, DJ Moore, Roma Dunce, they got some decent level um, you know, skill position players, but how would you rank the O line of the Bears versus the Dline of the Vikings? How do you see this matchup? Boy, it’s got to be one of the worst matchups we’ll see all week for the Bears. Uh, it is it is not a particularly great offensive line unit for the Bears. We don’t really know kind of what’s going to happen at left tackle. There were some concerns about whether or not Braxton Jones was going to return from injury quickly enough. I I think that he’s going to be playing, but you know, aside from him, I mean, Braxton Jones is probably one of the better sixth offensive lineman you can have, but right now he’s starting, and that’s not really a place that you want to be. Um, honestly, it’s just really at right tackle is kind of the only area where the Bears feel solid. Everywhere else there’s a bunch of young players or a bunch of new players. I mean, I understand that they brought in three new interior offensive linemen. Joe Thoney is is kind of is going to be kind of the gem of that class, but I wonder how well they’ll be able to work with Caleb Williams and with each other and they’ve never played with each other before with each other in order to navigate all of the complex stuff the Vikings do up front. I think as a pure talent, those interior offensive linemen are very, very good players, but I think as a unit, they’re untested enough for me to be kind of worried about what they’ll be able to do all together when when you bring it all into kind of one package. Now, the one big change for the Bears is at the head coach position. And if you looked at the I know it’s only one week, but if you looked at the Detroit Lions offense without Ben Johnson, you’re like, damn, this guy might be really good. So, what do you expecting he can bring specifically to this Bears offense? I I I think that um you take a look at the the games that the Vikings defense in particular had some of their worst outings last year. Um two out of the four of them were Ben Johnson coordinated. uh he and and that happened actually the year prior too. The two worst games in 2023 against the Brian Flores defense were from Ben Johnson. Uh and so it seems like he has kind of the keys to the castle when it comes to this particular defense. But the question is whether or not his answers to that test are reliant upon what Jared Goff can do or whether or not he can apply those solutions to somebody like a Caleb Williams who does have a very different playing style. He holds on to the ball a little bit longer. He likes to take deeper shots. That’s not really what G was doing against the Vikings. And so if he can kind of mesh all of these things together, apply the lessons that he’s learned from the Lions into the Bears system, it’s going to be super difficult for the for the uh Vikings defense unless they’ve adapted really significantly. Going to be super difficult for them to kind of contain this offense. Uh, and you know, obviously everything we’ve heard about Ben Johnson, you know, this off seasonason has been remarkably positive in ways that I think were not true for the previous head coach head coach, Matt Eberlu, who I think a lot of people kind of understood was like kind of corny and it was kind of difficult for him to reach players. Ben Johnson, it sounds like established an immediate rapport with a lot of those Bears players. And so the combination of his schematic intelligence as well as his emotional intelligence as a coach, you know, that could be pretty deadly for for the Bears, especially kind of long-term, but in particular given the match up problems Brian Flores, the defensive coordinator has had against Ben Johnson in the short term here on Monday night. Arif joining us here on the Jason Gregor Show covers the NFL for wideleft football. Arifa, 30 other teams have already played a game. I want to ask you, knowing it is only week one, which team surprised you and impressed you the most? Gosh. Uh, I mean, this is probably one of the best weekends that we’ve ever seen for an opening week. Um, this is pretty incredible. I thought, you know, both the Bills and the Chargers having big comebacks, which is something that both of those teams have struggled with over the past, you know, 3, five years. Um, you know, given kind of what who their quarterbacks are and who they were up against. So, I thought that was pretty fun. I thought Cam Ward had an outstanding game despite it being a loss to the Titans. He was really let down um by what his receivers um, you know, were not able to do for him. Um, I was really shocked at how effectively the Browns played. I I I didn’t expect any of that. In fact, I’m sure most of us didn’t expect that. The fact that they lost the game, you know, that was a very very weird game. But, you know, given that Joe Flacco at his age um was able to execute that offense with that level of efficiency, he virtually made no mistakes tells me the Browns might be a little bit better than we thought. Maybe that’s a low bar, but given kind of where they were before that, um, I I really think that they were were pretty impressive and they might be able to steal some wins uh throughout the year, but there were a lot of really interesting good performances. CJ Straoud, uh, Michael Panick, like I mentioned, Camour, Trevor Lawrence, I think, is kind of demonstrating that he might be the player that people thought he was. So, a lot of really great games this weekend. And I wanted to ask you just about the Indianapolis Colts in their quarterback situation. Did you see that from Daniel Jones? any way that he could look, you know, as efficient as he did? Uh, absolutely not. I really didn’t. And maybe I should have known better because every time Kevin Oonnell has the ability to coach a quarterback for it sounds like two seconds. Uh, you know, that quarterback seemingly improves pretty substantially. Daniel Jones, maybe some people aren’t familiar. Um, after he was waved by the Giants, was picked up by the Minnesota Vikings for I think around early December. So, for around six weeks, uh, he was on the Minnesota Vikings roster and there were a lot of stories about how he had improved pretty dramatically while he was with the Vikings. But you never know how true that is. He goes to Indianapolis. He actually gets a really good contract. He beats out Anthony Richardson for the starting job and he looks good. He just looks good. Now, the Miami defense has a lot of problems uh and and they had a couple of injuries in the back end. But I think even when you account for that, when you account for the lack of the pass rush, I thought Daniel Jones did a really good job. And it’s not like he credited that short period of time that he had with Kevin Oonnell um as part of his his growth trajectory here um with the Colts. I I I didn’t expect that at all. Even kind of controlling for the fact that I guess Okonnell is magic with some of these guys. Uh and you know, it’s a great story because, you know, you see a guy, you know, struggle for a little while, then he hits a peak and he gets a contract and then he struggles again and people hate him, then he leaves. You know, that’s a really tough situation to be in. For him to come back from that, I thought was a really good story. Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen today. Not career, but are they clearly the two best quarterbacks in the NFL today? Today, I would say so. I I I want to see a little bit more from Patrick Mahomes, a little bit more from Joe Burrow before I can put them in that category. I think Jaylen Herz might be somebody who’s knocking on that door, too. But, um, right now, if I were to take a quarterback with me into a game, it’d be one of those two. I’d have a real tough time deciding. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, that was an entertaining game last night. One of the greatest comebacks we’ve ever seen. So, Arie, hopefully the game tonight is just as entertaining. Thanks for this, man. Enjoy it. Yeah, absolutely. Thanks for having me. NFL week one wraps up tonight. And that was uh Arif Assan joining us from Wide Left Football. We’ll come back. We got five questions. Spec will be by also Noah Taylor. The Elks Dline. What the hell happened? What was in the pregame meal? They had six sacks in the first 11 games and rolled off four against a Calgary team that doesn’t give up a lot of sacks. So, uh, could this be one of the bigger turning points of the season? I said it. I think that was the most important win for the Elks in close to a decade. I’m trying to think of a game that was bigger when and not just the score on the scoreboard, but the fact that you had your biggest crowd in a long time. You win against a big arch rival. You have rankings 90 yard touchdown run. defense has four stacks. The Billings as loud as it’s been since I can remember. I think it was massive for a franchise and we’ll see if they can build on it now. They got Toronto on the road, Hamilton on the road, then at home to Saskatchewan. And they are right in the playoff mix now. They’re five- seven. They’re 4-1 in their last five games. Tied with BC for the crossover. And they’re only one game back at Winnipeg for third place in the West. Race is on, baby. Should be fun. We’ll return on the Gregor Show presented by our title sponsor, playalberta.ca. There’s so much to get to. I love it. Happy Monday. It’s this time of year, this is easy breezy as sports talk. There’s just there’s no shortage topics. I can’t really even dig into all of them because I just don’t have enough time, which is fantastic. I love it. So, lots of texts on various topics. Check it out at the brickandthebick.com in the tensel. It’s time for five questions on the Jason Greer show. All right, Jason. Question number one. What stood out to you the most in the Elf big win over the Stamps in the Labor Day rematch? Well, to me it has to be the fact that the Dline they got four sacks after only having six as a Dline combined the first 11 games. like that is that is a massive improvement and just look at after the first two series of the gamecom the uh the Calgary Stampeders one of the best offenses they looked anemic the Vernon Adams only completed 47% of his passes after the first two series they they had sacks all over the place they didn’t give up money much rushing yards this was that to me is a massive turnaround and they did it without Robbie Smith and Jake Szan two big free agent signings out for the year Robbie Smith’s been banged up off and on all year long and the new guys have come in with more opportunity and being great. One of the things and it probably sounds stupid but I really liked the push back from the green and gold Gregor Mcceler in the third quarter when I think Roberts took the penalty. Yeah, and he just pushed him back and it it probably something you don’t want to see too often. It set up a second and 15. Fajardo hit uh Victor for the first down 18 yards. Yeah. Yeah. I just like that they pushed back. Like I’d like to see that from my team. Obviously, maybe similar to like in hockey, you know, you get a penalty for defending your teammate. Your team goes out there and kills the penalty. I just like that, you know, they took care of their business. It didn’t end up being a factor, but I like just seeing a little bit of push back from the green and gold be a little nasty. Sometimes they don’t get that as much in football. So, that was just one little play that came to the top of my head. I really like that. And then, I mean, winning the trenches offensively, defensively, uh, that was what you want to see from this team. So, really encouraging sign. Question number two for you. Bears Vikings wrapping up week one in the NFL tonight. Vikings coming in as a one and a half point favorite over at playberta.ca. If you were making one bet in this game and you’re feeling good about it, what would it be? Well, they just announced that Jaylen Johnson is inactive and Kyle Gordon, so he’s the uh the Pro Bowl quarterback. Uh there’s also Kyler Gordon’s out. So, I’m going to say whatever the yards is on Jefferson, I’m taking the over. 77.5. Oh, I’m taking the over all day long now. All day. Yeah, I think I’m with you on that one. That man might be too easy. And if if you can same game parlay, maybe hit the Justin Jefferson touchdown. I I wanted to go with the under in this game because I thought, you know, two younger quarterbacks that might be making some mistakes, but there’s just too much offensive firepower in this game. So, also, I’m taking the over. It’s 43 points. We can get like a 21 24 game, right? Like that that could happen. So, take the over as well in my opinion. Question number two, that is considering it’s been an under weekend. It’s a little ballsy. I like that. Well, you know, I don’t like to bet the under. Question number three. What was the most pleasant surprise for you in the weekend of football and the biggest shock as well? Well, the most pleasant surprise to me was how loud it was at at Commonwealth. It hasn’t been that loud in I can’t remember how long. Honestly, that you know the the the fans that were there, there’s 28,365s, the biggest crowd in a long time. They got to experience a great atmosphere and uh and they were into it. So I I think that’d be the surprise to me just how loud it was. And I wasn’t sold that the Elks were going to win, but they were full marks uh for that. As far as the the most shocking Well, I got to go with the the Cincinnati Bengals offense generating seven. That’s right. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven yards in the entire second half and still winning the football game. My favorite thing I mean just having the NFL back as a whole was quite nice just to sit down and throw on some football. Uh loved it all like the whole weekend CFL NFL collegiate as well. Surprising for me maybe Florida Gator losing to South Florida. Maybe maybe Death would know if that’s more of a huge shock and then Mississippi State at home beating Arizona State the uh 13 and 12 seed losing at the collegiate level. I will say those were shocks for me in the football world. Question number four for you. We discussed the Jets with Jamie Thomas. What do you think the ceiling is for this team in 2025 2026? The ceiling? I think the ceiling is getting to the second round. I don’t think they can win and go to the conference final. I have the same answer. Is it because you don’t think they can beat Dallas or Colorado? Yes. Okay. Yeah, we’re on the same page here with I mean, I think they could have a good regular season. I’d love to go back actually and look at the statistics for the team and then Connor Hellabuk against playoff teams versus non-playoff teams just see if there’s any correlation there about struggles with better teams. But final question for you on this day in 1966 Star Trek debuted on NBC forest very successful led to a cartoon airing on this day in 1973. Are you a fan of the Star Trek franchise? And if so, do you have a favorite character? Go ahead. No, I’m not. Uh, my dad used to get me to try to watch this all the time as a kid. So, like, no. I I never really got into it. If I had to pick a favorite character. Oh, I don’t know. Is it Captain Pequard? Is he the the bald one? Yeah, I guess he would be my favorite character. I don’t like the or Burton with the weird glasses things that he would wear. Maybe one of those two. Oh, the black guy. Yeah, I know. I don’t know the character’s names, but yeah, he Yeah, he had the like the weird glasses because he had some eye thing. Lavar Burton, I think that was his name. Oh, is that who it was? I don’t know. Also in Reading Rainbow. I thought you were going off what the character’s name was. Dude, I’m not I’m not a Star Trek guy. I have no um I I don’t think I ever watched a full episode of Star Trek. Uh I guess I’d have to pick a favorite character to be Spock only because of uh you know what he used to do with the with the handshake thing, whatever. But I don’t I was not a Treky. I I never I’ve never watched one full episode of Star Trek. And obviously at this stage in my life, I never will. So wasn’t uh I’m more of a Star Wars guy over Star Trek for sure. That’s okay. People like it. I just I just never got into it. Never. Didn’t uh didn’t understand it. So your dad tried to get you into it. Yeah. The second one. Yeah. With Captain Pickard. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Lots of memories of that music playing in the house. But yeah, I never never got into it. I was never really a a sci-fi guy. Yeah, even Star Wars, I’ve only seen two. Really? Yeah. Oh, all right. Star Trek is way better than Star Wars. Uh, stiff. No chance. Is there an R2-D2 in Star Trek? I don’t think so. They do have that little cool transportation device in Star Trek. Oh, the uh um I don’t even know what it’s called, but uh yeah, this just the Star Trek fans must hate this. The Transporter. Oh, buddy. That was pretty cool. I’ll take your word for it. Sure. Sure, why not? So, yeah. What was it? Was it Leonard Nemoy? He was Spock, I think. Right. Like obviously William Shatner was the uh the main guy. Actually the one guy might you know George talking he’s pretty funny. Mhm. Right. He’s actually quite funny on uh on social media too. So but yeah just uh could never I can’t even comment if it’s better or worse than Star Wars because I haven’t seen it. But just never never got into it. Let’s get to uh sports 1440 update. How you doing? How’d that How was that slle juice on whatever day that was? Oh, you know, I haven’t had slle juice in a while, but uh it was good. I I didn’t overindulge in it, so that made it better. And uh you know what? They had some uh some really unique uh the the hot stove with the uh with Mcdeal and Morris was pretty good. But honestly, John Cornish and uh don’t don’t tell them we said this, but John Cornish and Eddie Steel, it was really good. Like it was a really good uh hot stove if you like kind of hearing some stories about the uh the game and you know some funny little chirps uh about either side. But it was I thought that part of it was fantastic. And there was also this uh Jamaican uh drum crew that that uh performed. I thought they were pretty stellar. So yeah, overall, you know what, first year they’ve done it. There’s a few little things like Bri tweet out. The food was unreal spec. I will say that. Like oh my god. So you know me, I love a brunch. So I love the brunch. Yeah. So it was good. I think it’s it’s definitely something to build on. I did learn though with the Elsk that they’re not having their annual dinner this year. And I’ve talked to Chris Morris about that. I thought that was fantastic. I know it was a fundraiser for them and then now that they’re privately owned, but I’m like, well, you could still do something because I think a lot of people liked it. It was a way for a lot of people to get to know the, you know, the players all came. So, I think that’s something they might want to uh reconsider. But the the brunch is here to stay and I think it only get bigger and better as the as the years go along. So, that’s good. And it was a it was a preview to one hell of a game spec. And uh I’ve said it that’s the biggest win in in fr biggest game in franchise history for like the last eight years at least. Yeah. in in Elks franchise history. Could you say that? For sure. Yeah. Not even close. Yeah, I would say that’s probably I mean, they haven’t done much winning, so there’s not a lot to choose from. But, uh, listen, it’s it’s taken a long time to put a product down that you can walk out of that stadium and say, you know, I I see reason to really believe in this thing. I see that, you know, yeah, they’re, you know, they’re not there yet. What are they, five and seven? That’s, you know, we’re not thumping our chests over five and seven here. But you do see, you know, you see a feature back in ranking who’s probably the best back in the league right now, right? You know, we’re not I mean, we can talk about the Trey Ford thing anytime you want, but we’re not in the middle of a quarterback experiment, right? They’ve got in Fardo a legit veteran guy that makes the right play, that doesn’t panic, that, you know, knows how to run an offense. Uh they’ve got, you know, they’ve got a defense all of a sudden. I thought there was a huge difference against Calgary. They they turned a little bit like they went from a team that got some pressure to a team that turned pressure into sacks and that was the biggest difference for me on defense that you know they got after Vernon Adams more than they’ve been after any quarterback all year. And then all before you know it, the guy’s passing balls before he wants to. And now maybe you’re going to get they got one pick, maybe they could have had a couple more. That’s how football’s played and they’re starting to look like a football team. Jay, you got to say that. Yeah. Well, hey, their their defensive line had four sacks. It had six in 11 games coming in. So, it was a massive difference. And no Smith and No Sesan, they still did it. And that to me is great. Sesan’s obviously done for the year according to GM Ed Hervey. So, Robbie Smith, we don’t know when he’ll be back, but he’s kind of been alien injuries all year long. But those guys and and we have one of them, Noah Taylor, who leads the team in sacks. He’ll be joining us after you. But it was a huge win. And you know what? They’re tied with BC for the crossover. They’re only they’re only one one win two points back of Winnipeg for third place. All of a sudden the the race for for second and third in the East which technically is fourth in the West if there’s a crossover. And the third place team like you got a great race shaping up here for the final third of the season. Yeah. A bunch of teams. A whole bunch of teams and and Winnipeg doesn’t look like they might not have Collar’s back. No. No. You know they might not have them back. So all of a sudden looking at Winnipeg, you got one. I think they play them once, the Elks. Correct. Yes. Tell me if I’m wrong. I know they play them once. I don’t think they play him twice. They play him once. You know, the thought of catching Winnipeg to me like the pedigree of that team and the culture. They go to the cup every year. That’s I don’t love that idea. But if listen, they haven’t had a good year. They’re not the same team. And if Claros is not guiding them now, they’re just a little bit more like a regular football team. And why can’t you beat them? So, uh, you know what? All arrows up, man. All arrows up. Let’s, you know, I’m not going to start talk about a home playoff game, but how about just making the playoffs? That’d be a hell of a start. Yeah. Yeah. Home playoff game. They’re not catching Calgary or Sask. That’s not happening, right? It doesn’t really matter at this point. You just you have a winning season, a competitive season that you needed to give your fans a reason to believe that things were turning and going in the right direction. And I think we’ve seen that. They’re 4- one now in their last five games. But more so that game yesterday or sorry on Saturday against a really good Calgary team. You made Calgary look uncomfortable at times in that game offensively and and even defensively. You know what? Obviously Rankin is fantastic uh right now. You know, you mentioned Trey Ford. Trey Ford’s really young. Like it’s not like there’s a bevy of backup quarterbacks in the league that people are just dying to get over. Like I’m in no rush to move Trey Ford. So what if he keeps learning develops as a backup? So what? There’s not a lot of quarterback depth around the CFL. So people like, “Oh, they should trade him.” What the hell would you trade him for? So then what? Now you got a nobody at your at your backup that no one’s even heard of and you’re going to play him. Like Cody Fardo is not young. And you know what? Like you’re one injury away from needing a quarterback. I am I have no interest in trading Trey Ford whatsoever. To me, that would make zero sense. No, I mean at some point you have to decide if you’re going to play him or not or what are you going to do. I don’t think he’s just going to sign up for being a benchwarmer for the next however long. But having said that, you’re you’re right. He’s a young quarterback. I would think he could learn a ton from being with Fardo in the film room and talking to him during the games. And you know this, you know, it’s football, man. You could go from being on the bench to playing three games in a row in one hit. You know, that’s that’s football. Trey Ford’s got his helmet nearby at all times. And if he does go in, I once again look forward to watching him play. But I get it how this organization feels like we just we’re not in a position to blow off a season grooming a young quarterback. We got to play the veteran and win some games. And right now the plan looks like they’re making the right call. Yeah. I don’t think anybody’s been talking about playing Trey Ford. Why would you like now? No. I’m talking the start of the season. They were talking about at the start of the season like let’s play this kid finally and let’s see what he can do. And they moved away from that and I’m not criticizing him one bit. Fajardo’s come in and he’s taken the ball and he can’t no one can take it back from him. He’s playing great. They’re winning games and this is professional sports. It’s about winning and no one’s looking at the Elks and saying they’re doing anything wrong. They won four of their last five. I mean that’s I don’t know if they’ve ever done that when they were called the Elks. No. God, no. Um no, I don’t think they have. Uh Mark Spectre uh joins us. Yeah, it was it’s a huge win for them and now that you know now they got Toronto and another big test and you keep winning and you know if they could find a way to win you know split it because Hamilton’s a good team. So if you can split in Toronto and Hamilton you’re still in the mix and then you come home and probably have a chance for a big crowd again. But the most important part about that win was you sent your fan base who who has been kind of waiting to to have something to cheer about and they have something to cheer about and I think you got a decent chance of getting a lot of those fans to come back to the next game and that’s what they have to build. Yeah. and and you you know the Saskatchewan fans are there’s going to be 7,000 of them and it’s a fun place to go and now if you’re an Elks fan you’re not going in there and thinking oh man like it’s going to be another night where the where the Sask you know the Melon heads abuse us all night because they’re going to win by 35 like they’ve been doing the last few years in here and now you go in that building and say hey we can beat these guys we just beat Calgary why can’t we beat Saskatchewan so belief right belief in the dressing room, belief in the stands, you know, belief in the media. Like, I’m not here to blow smoke up anyone’s, you know, what there’s, you can believe in this team. They they’ve just beaten, I guess, the best team in the league in Calgary. And if you can beat Calgary, hell, who can’t you beat? Mark Spectre from Roger Sportset joins us. Spec, we are a few days away from uh rookie camp beginning. Obviously, Seavoy and Howard will be the the marquee people to uh to be watching in that. Is there anybody else who piques your interest at the rookie camp this year? Uh, a couple guys. I mean, I’m interested to see the big German kid, Samsky. Okay. I don’t, you know, because, you know, we just haven’t ever seen them play, right? What’s the name of the Finnish defenseman? Got a goofy name. Oh, yeah. But he’s not in the rookie camp. The The guy who’s He’s not at the rookie camp. No. Uh, no. He’s like 20 uh 26. Too old for the rookie camp? Yeah. RT. Is that who you’re talking about? Yeah. Yeah, he’s not coming in the in the rookie camp. I would have been interested to see him. Yeah. Atro, sorry. Atro is his name, right? Aroin. Yeah, he’s not. He’ll be at main camp, but the Damian Carfagna, he’ll play at the rookie camp. So, now he I expect him and Boi, both of them are going to be in the in the minors uh to start the season. But yeah, Atro Lepin, he’s a he’s another, you know, like I have to me and I wrote it today when I uh I put out some of the interview I had with uh David Tamasic and I mentioned for me Tamasic and Alex Regula are the two most intriguing players for me at training camp. Do you think Regula’s got a shot? I do. Yeah. like he he’s when I look at Emerson and Stetcher and I look at Regula’s age and the fact that you kind of got a free player here spec right he’s 24 he’s 6’5 look at how they value defense when he’s a right shot I know Stan Bowman was very high in him that’s why I claimed him and you know like like I hate to say it if it came down to the order saying geez we could lose regulan waiverss or maybe we lose Troy Stetcher I think they’d lean to losing Troy Stetcher well Young and right Shaw and and like I got to say this and I know you agree with me. Troy Stetcher is like Mr. Overlooked, right? You know, he just gives you everything when he plays and everyone just keeps pushing him back on the bench or putting them wherever. Uh I got a ton of respect for Troy Ster, but having said that, you know, younger players, this team’s got to get bigger and it’s got to get younger and Regula’s got him on both counts. I haven’t seen Regula play to tell you that I think he’s any better. You know, he’s certainly not as seasoned. He hasn’t played 500 NHL games like Stetcher has. Exactly. Uh but you know what? If if he can, you know, again, young and big and right shot, those are three important areas. And let’s let it play out. I mean, three guys for two spots. Are we saying that? Emerson, let’s let’s say it’s Emerson, Regula, and Stetcher for your six and seven spots. Yeah. And then there’s I guess Yeah. And then Lepin’s another wild card to to see where he falls in. Right. Lepedin’s a wild card. So, you know what? This is Listen, you’re not going to have a ton of competition at the top of your lineup. It’s a really good team. Guys are on contracts. You didn’t bring in a bunch of, you know, a ton of free agents and stuff. There’s a little competition, but they do have competition at the bottom of the lineup. And it’d be interesting to see how these guys, you know, guys like Thomas, I saw your stuff today and I heard the interview with him the other day. you know, he’s going to be a very interesting player, man. Can he who can he supplant around here? I can’t wait to find out. Well, I I know that you you talked about it with your conversation with Zack Kimman. He hasn’t taken a shot yet. So, you know, my our guts would tell us that Zack Kimman might not be ready to start the regular season. If that’s the case, then that means somebody is going to get a chance. It might only be for a week or two, but that’s going to open up an opportunity for somebody to grab it. And maybe uh uh David Tomasic might be that guy. Might be that guy. I mean, someone’s going to play next to Conor McDavid. Now, it may just be shuffling people up the lineup and you know, it may not be a Thomas Tamasc right next to McDavid or or Ike Howard right next to McDavid or Seavoi, but listen, there’s a big hole in a bunch of minutes in the first line and someone’s going to get him. So, you know, if if Heyman takes a couple weeks to play, that’s going to be a really good audition for a couple of probably younger guys on this team. Yeah, 100%. Mark Spectre joins us. Uh, Spec, I I don’t know. Uh, you watch the Jays. I know like I thought the Jays pitching was actually really good. The Yankees didn’t get much. Now, they got a big home run in the first inning and obviously that was the difference. The Jays for a rare game, it was actually their at bats. I think they were two for 10 with runners in scoring position on Sunday. Like that’s a game in hindsight they probably should have won. It’s a game they’ve been winning all year. You know, you could say that for sure, Jay. They’ve been winning that game when they get the right people up with runners on, you know, and the right people are basically Bishette and Guerrero and Springer. Like those guys have delivered. those your best guys the Guerrero least of all but even then those guys have delivered and that’s why you’re in first place because your best players are your best players so listen they lost two out of three a couple tight ones to the Yankees uh you know it’s no one said it’s going to be easy what are they two games up right now coming out of this break so that’s okay they’re still in first place there’s still ball to play no one said they were going to get to coast to the finish line and not have any competition you know you got to play well you want to be a first place team that means you gota keep playing well. You can’t just play well for a month, right? Yeah. Yeah. No, they’ll be in it. And did you by chance watch the uh Sunday Niner the NFL last night? I saw I I didn’t see the whole thing, but I came home and I was I was like the Bills fan, man. As it went from the third to fourth quarter, I was I was looking for something else on TV going, “Ah, this game’s cooked.” The good news is I couldn’t find anything. So, I came back and oh man, what’s going on here? That was a crazy finish to that game. Oh jeez. It was It’s one of the greatest finishes you’ll ever see. And you know, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, high entertainment value. If you like high entertainment plays, both of those guys, you know, he threw in Derrick Henry, like that game had a lot, man. Not a lot of great, not defense, but really some great offensive plays. Like actually some of those passes, Josh Allen, I’m like, geez, I’m not sure Baltimore could have better coverage. He just made some perfect plays. So he was stuffing the ball. They got lucky. Listen, Buffalo gets lucky. They get the fumble. that fumble doesn’t happen. They don’t win a game. And then they get their second last touchdown on a deflected pass that goes to their other, you know, the other receiver in the end zone. Yeah. Like how many times you seen that happen in your life, right? Not many. So Buffalo gets a couple huge breaks and wins, but that’s sport, man. Sometimes the breaks are with you. Oh, dude. Like watching that is exactly why you love sports because it’s completely unpredictable and that’s what makes sports so awesome. Beck, we will chat with you. Ad, have a good one. Vikings and Bears tonight, buddy. Yeah. Who do you Who’s Do you have an NFL team? Uh, I got a couple. You know what? I don’t like Rogers much. I’ve always liked Pittsburgh. I’m not a big Aaron Rogers fan and he was really good yesterday. He was uh I like the Bears. I’m a Chicago guy. I like the Bears. Okay. I’m not that serious about it, but I just like watching good football. I’ll watch anybody play. How about you? You’re still Miami even though they suck. Dude, I gave up the Dolphins a long time ago until their owner goes away. And trust me, Spec, it’s been a very easy decision because the Dolphins like it’s not I’m like, “Oh, great. I don’t have to feel the pain the Dolphins fans feel.” So, yeah, I don’t really I don’t really have a team I root for. My son’s a big Chiefs fan, so when they play, I cheer for him. But, I’ve always like the Bengals were always kind of my second favorite team just because their helmets. But, you know, the Bengals uniform, the Bengals can do stuff until the playoffs and then once the playoffs come around, they’re like the Winnipeg Jets. Yeah. Oh, that’s what we’re we’re at that point where the Jets are now. They’re now the Bengals. Is that what we’re saying? Well, geez. Well, well, you think about it, honestly. Like, you look at the Jets. You got a guy who’s always a VZNA trophy winner, and then you get to like we had Jamie Thomas on today, spec, and I didn’t realize the the Jets had the best road record in the NHL last year in the regular season. Didn’t win a road game. They went 0 and6. And not that they didn’t win a game, they got crushed. They got outscored 27 to9 in six road games in the playoffs. And they played, who’ they play? St. Louis and Dallas. Louis and Dallas. Yeah. And they got obliterated. So yeah, the uh the Jets are a team that right now has to to show people that, you know, they can show up in the playoffs. That’s just that’s just how it is for them. There’s no Maybe it’s the name. Maybe it’s the Jets name. Maybe it bleeds from the hapless NFL Jets into Winnipeg. Maybe they maybe it’s got something to do with that. The New York Jets. The New York Jets and the Buffalo Sabres are in the ultimate race to see who can end the uh the long drought of the playoffs. Not sure I’m confident either one can do it this year. All right, Jay, have a great night, man. Have a good one. Like fans, remember the decade of darkness and you’re like, “God, that was painful.” The uh the Sabres, they missed the playoffs this year. It’s 15 years in a row. You did 10 and you felt like it was awful. 15 brutal and they didn’t get a Conor McDavid at the end of it. Oh, maybe they’ll get Gavin McKenna, but God help. I’ve said I said it already. That’s the team that I would root to get Gavin McKenna because the Sabre fans are they’re great. Buffalo fans, you look at the Bills, I think they’re great, but Sabres, they’re brutal. When we come back, it was by far the greatest performance of the season by the Elks defensive line. What changed? How do you go from six sacks in 11 games to four in one game against a team that doesn’t get sacked very often? We’ll find out. We will speak to one of the gentlemen who uh leads the Alen sacks, Noah Taylor. Next on the Gregor Show presented by play Alberta.ca. The Midsummer sales event is on now at Volvo Cars Edmonton. Monday Night Football has the Bears and the Vikings going at it a little bit later on tonight. Our next guest, I don’t know if he’ll be watching or not, but he’ll probably be in a good mood as the the Edmonton Elks with their biggest win of the season. Uh biggest win for definitely as the Elks franchise. There’s no question. They move into a tie with BC for the crossover. They’re one game back of Winnipeg for third in the West. They’re 4- one in their last five games, coming off a 31-19 victory over the Calgary Stampeders. And we’re joined by uh Noah Taylor in his second year with the uh the Green and Gold. Uh currently leads the team in sacks. Noah, welcome to the show, man. How you doing? Hey man, I’m good. How are you? I’m excellent. So, I got to start with the easy Well, maybe it’s not easy. So, the Dline had combined and and for uh and you had three of them for uh for six sacks for defensive lineman in the first 11 games, but you guys erupted for four on Saturday. It was the most consistent pressure. What changed against a team that doesn’t give up a ton of sacks? So, it was it was a very impressive performance specifically by the Dline CP. What do you feel was the difference? Uh I think it was really just like everybody coming together um and playing their own part. uh like DB, they really had an amazing game and that allowed us to have a good game. Um and then obviously our DC calling some really good plays. So it was just like a mixture of everything. Just uh like our coaches letting us go and then everyone on the team having our backs as well. So, you come in, you know, you came in here last year out of a University of uh Virginia, also University of North Carolina, and uh you sign here and you know, a lot of guys who come in that first year, you know, kind of midway through the year like you did. Uh you know, it kind of takes a while to get used to it. How much more comfortable have you felt this year? And what’s been the biggest difference for you to getting used to being one yard off the ball? Yeah, the biggest difference for me was like an extra step. So like for most of my especially like throughout college I was I’m making I know like okay if I want to do this move I’m going outside foot up and then one two three and then making my move or inside foot up and then one two three four like whatever the case is. It was like my steps and it got to a point where like I didn’t even have to um like think about I’m not in my head one two three one two three or one two three four just because like it became so repetitive over time but like the yard off the ball I have to take an extra step on you know certain moves. So that’s been like the biggest thing was just trying to make it so it’s like secondhand nature. Okay. And yeah because you don’t it sounds strange but you don’t want to be thinking too much right? You just want to be able to react in the game, especially as a Dline. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. You look like the Stamp Peters, you faced a team, you know, in consecutive weeks and, you know, sorry, consecutive week, well, consecutive weeks in a span of like six days. And so, is there an advantage do you find um having gone up against the O line six days earlier that you you get more used to them? like you can watch a lot of stuff on film, but just seeing it up close and personal, is it easier that second time around for a D lineman against an O lineman in your opinion? Uh, it could be easier in some ways and it could be harder because like the same way that yeah, we know them is the same way that they know us. Um, especially this is really my third time playing them because I played against them in the preseason. So yeah, I mean it has its advantages and it has its negative effects obviously just because I mean they watch film too, you know. I’m not the only one that’s watching film. So yeah. No, that that’s totally fair. Uh there was, you know, there’s been some changes. Jake Serzna out unfortunately at Irvital is probably done for the year. Uh you know, Robbie Smith not there. You know, two bigname guys yet the whole group stepped up and you know sometimes you know opportunity knocks guys to take advantage of it, right? Did did you sense that from your group? there was maybe a little bit of like, hey, some guys are going to get a few more reps here. Let’s take advantage of it. Yeah. I mean, that was the that was it. Um what our coaches were saying all week, just that we got to answer the call. And um I really just came down to just who wants it more and and football is really all it is. Like there’s no like, you know, special formula like you’re playing in the CFL, you’re playing in the NFL, you know, if you’re still playing football after college, you’re good enough to be there. Um, that’s not the question. The question is just do you have the the want to to get better and the and the want to to sag the quarterback. So, yeah, I like what you said there. I think some there are some people like the the the gap to to be a pro player from the NFL to the CFL is incredibly small for a lot of guys. You know, sometimes it just comes down to opportunity, sometimes it comes down to health. And, you know, you’re a young guy. you you just turned 25 years of age and which is really you know you kind of think about it second year pro like you got a lot of room to grow here and develop where do you feel you’ve taken the biggest strides from last year until this year as a professional player um I would say that’s a good question maybe confidence maybe and just um just knowing how good I am and playing also playing like it um at the beginning of the year obviously like being not getting as many snaps as I wanted to. I was definitely like a little down on myself. Um, and like started to like question my talent and stuff. And then yeah, I just think confidence has played a big part later in the year and just like realizing like no matter the circumstance, I’m still a good player and I could still play. So Noah Taylor joins us. And confidence, it’s crazy how you say that. No, because a lot of people think, well, you’re a professional athlete, you should always have confidence. Doesn’t work that way. like it, you know, your your brain’s probably at times your your toughest critic and and your it’s might be your your toughest opponent in some ways. Yeah. Yeah. No, definitely. Confidence is easily one of the biggest things I see I’ve seen it, you know, all throughout my career. Just he’s got he’s a really good player. You can just tell he’s not, you know, he’s just not going, you know, it sounds simple, but it’s it’s definitely a hard thing to do. Noah, looking at your Dline coach, Demetrius Maxi, and you know, I know a lot of the guys from Toronto knew him, terminology is similar, but what have you learned from him? How has he helped you become a better pass rusher? Yeah, he’s helped me in a lot of ways. Just like just helped me to like get going and then he’s helped with that with that confidence factor, too. And just like and literally like it sounds easy, but sometimes you just got to take the thinking out of it. You know, one of one of my u one of his funniest things that he says is just it’s not rocket science. You know, it’s just it shows like it’s just it’s not as as hard and as difficult as people try to make it, you know, like it’s just football. We’ve been playing this sport forever. So, you just got to, you know, just go out there and play football. Just go out there and get to the quarterback, you know, it’s not that hard. Well, that that’s well said, right? At the end, it’s kind of can be simplistic. Um for for you, what do you feel is your biggest strength as a D lineman as you get more comfortable that you think you can exploit offensive lineman even more here in the final third of the season? Yeah, I think my best thing was was always how many different positions I could play on the field. Um, that’s always got coaches very happy and you know the amount of the different positions that I could play on the field whether it be lined up and inside like especially like when we get into like our second down stuff all the different things that I can do. I think that’s like probably the best. What is for you if I said okay no you get to play one position which one’s your favorite? Oh definitely beline like edge rusher. Yeah that’s probably the most fun. Okay. So on the outside now, does it matter if you’re coming from the right side or the left side? Um, yeah. I don’t think it m I don’t really care what size as long as I’m out there just rushing the passer. Okay. I would like to have a blitzer on the on the inside of me or, you know, some type of something that’s just not like, you know, like a base um a base like a four down rush just because, you know, put stress on the tackle when you see someone coming inside and stuff. How impressed were you by, you know, you had a really young linebacking core on Saturday, right, due to due to injuries to uh, you know, to to De Morgan and and obviously Nick Anderson, who I think might be coming back in the Toronto game. We’ll see. But how impressed were you about that, you know, just how well your rookie linebacking core play? Yeah. No, it was amazing. And it’s not like it was a surprise because like Brock and Joel are great players and great people, but um yeah, it was definitely to no surprise because I know how good of of players that they are. Um like I said, it literally always just came down to like want to like I looked at we got this guy here, we got this guy here, but we got you know, we got guys that can fill these positions. It’s just a matter of like are they going to like are they gonna like they have the athletic ability to but like are they going to you know showcase that during the game which they did. So whe when uh with Niles out who kind of took charge of the huddle? Um, honestly it was a mixture like the back end. It was probably um, you know, I heard KJ’s voice, but you’ve been hearing him step up a lot and then um, and then Joel and then um, Barlo, Brandon Barlo. Um, he stepped up like just as every game goes on and he’s getting his confidence. So Noah, are you a trash talker on the field? Um, if you if you start it, then I’m I’m gonna finish it. But I would never, you know, I respect the game too much to just go out there and start and start talking. You know, youth pushing me around and holding me and talking crazy, then then I might say a little a little something. Now, every defense though always has a few guys that are the they’re kind of like the the engines physically, some of them verbally. Who are who are the guys that kind of take char and because it’s funny, you might be a quiet guy at heart, but when you hear your other teammates, you get up. You’re kind of like, “Okay, I like this. Now I’m into it.” Who’s Yeah. Who are the vocal chirpers on your defense? Oh, man. Can I Can I say that? Of course. That’s That’s a good thing, man. There’s nothing wrong with that. I would I would say I love it when I hear KJ. He like to talk a lot. It’s never like nothing bad. He’s just he talking like, you know what I mean? He knows how good of a player he is. And then Niles definitely like Niles plays like he’s always trying to kill somebody and that always pumps me up. So now, what about in practice when you go up against your O line? Who is like Cuz it’s good healthy competition, but who do you like going up against in practice that like you guys really go at it with each other? Yeah, my favorite is Teds just cuz he’s I mean, he’s a really really good offensive tackle and he has literally all the intangibles. Really strong hands. He’s got long arms, good feet. Um, yeah, I’ll say to date he’s still the best tackle I played against. So, being able to go against him in practice every day makes me better. Now, who have you gotten you getting fired up against guys in practice? Like, like I like the fact Connor Hley talked about earlier on our show today like there you know there’s a little bit of push back. I know like you know McKeler kind of had enough and I know he took a penalty but it was funny in hockey when somebody takes a real aggressive penalty to protect the teammate it seems the team always kills it off. Well, your team took that and then they connect on an 18 yard uh second down and long and they compete can uh sorry complete it 18 yards to Jackson. Did you find like was there a little bit more energy in your group uh in the game yesterday on Saturday? Oh yeah, definitely. Just I mean last week if you watched the film like just being real like they they played a more physical game than us. they deserve to win that game. And I think we looked at the film, watched it, and said, “All right, we’re not gonna let that happen again.” And we came out there and we we deserve to win. You know, like you watch some games and it’s like, “All right, maybe they got away with a couple calls here or this team came out sleeping like, nah, against when we played on Saturday, we were the more physical team, we deserve that win.” Same thing when we played out there. They were the more physical team and they deserve that win. the the physical element of football. It’s like a lot of the times that’s what it’ll come down to. Obviously, you need execution and but it’s hard because some games, you know, it’s not like you don’t want to be physical, but when another team has it, is it hard to get it back? Like, did you sense in that game like, damn, like they just got us right now and it’s hard to sometimes turn that wave in your direction. Yeah, I mean it was it was hard on the entire week of just how they out physical us. So, I think everybody just went out there with a with an edge. Like, we had the answer. Like, our coach is literally calling us out, showing us on film to the entire team, this is not who we are. And, you know, as a man, you should, and a lot of guys did take that um personally. So, yeah. Well, it it clearly worked. Now, Noah, do you got a nickname on your team? What do the guys call you? Um, I don’t think I have a nickname. That’s crazy. I’ve never really honestly I’ve never had one. When I was in college, they called me seven just because of my number and it was my favorite. It is my favorite number. But um trying to think of like maybe any jokes here and there don’t have a nickname. So So what do they just call you? They call you Taylor. They call you No. What do they call you in the game? Yeah, just Noah. 42. Just 42 or Noah or 42? Well, geez. We’ll have to You have to get your teammates to work on a nickname. You can’t give yourself one. That’s never going to work. But uh might have to get your teammates to to get one or the fans. Maybe we’ll ask the fans to come up with one for you. So Oh yeah, that’ll be great. Yeah. Well, Noah, continued success. Hey, your team’s right in the mix now. Like four and one in your last five games. You had talked about just your confidence personally is a lot higher than it was early in the season. I’m sensing it’s from a team and now it’s okay, we got to keep going here. You have an opportunity, you know, against Toronto, a team that obviously you would be battling for in the crossover. You’re two points back at Winnipeg. You’re tied with BC. Can you just maybe talk about now how all of a sudden like it’s more real? Hey, we’re in the playoffs here. Like six weeks ago, no one was even thinking that, but now after going four and one, it’s a legit possibility. Yeah, I mean, you play the first, you know, I say like 10, 11 games and obviously you want to win those games and they’re serious games to win, but I guess it it’s not really hitting home until it’s like I remember before we played Calgary, I’m sitting in my room like trying to go to sleep. I can’t even feel like dog, we have like we don’t have a choice. We have to win this game. we really don’t have a choice. And it’s just because that’s the the stage of the season that we’re in where like every single game matters. But I’m hoping I’m not looking at it that in a way of like um oh we need to win this game so we can make the playoffs. Like no, we need to beat Toronto period because we need to beat Toronto, you know, and that’s it. Um so I that’s how I look at it, you know. That’s what I’m going to stress throughout the week is just game by game. Like game by game. That’s how we got to where we are is just taking the game by game. um looking over the correction, making sure we’re, you know, doing the right things and just taking a game by game. Awesome stuff, Noah. Thanks for joining us. Uh best of luck Saturday in Toronto. Appreciate your time. All right. Thank you so much. Have a good one. You do. That is uh Noah Taylor leads the Elks in sacks in his first full season. Of course, he he joined the team uh in what late July last year. I think ended up getting into seven games in his first season. And uh Quick likes to be on the the edge and no nickname. That’s kind of a rarity. Like usually even like like be tas or something like usually there’s a nickname but not one. We’ll see. Maybe you can create one. Take a quick break. Uh got a great lineup coming up uh tomorrow on the show. Jay’s are back in action. Uh we’ll talk about that. The the rookie camp getting a little bit uh closer, so we’ll we’ll touch base on uh on that and uh and much more. a few other uh topics that a few surprise guests will uh discuss tomorrow. So, uh very much looking forward to that. Hey, Greg, speaking of nickname, Tay-Tay, you think that’s taken, Brad? Does anybody really call Taylor Swift that? Like, I don’t even know. Does like cons I know you and Declan are much more Swifties than I am. So, I’m very anti- Swifty right now actually. Oh, just because she because she’s engaged to a chief. Well, you know, TR Tart does the uh the world a favor and slaps Travis Kelce and the Swifties are going after him now. So, I gotta I gotta, you know, support my guy, defensive lineman TR Tart for the Chargers. He came right out, though. You know what? I loved his response right afterwards. Said, “You know what? I can’t do that.” Yeah. And like, what else do you want from a guy? So, well, Swifty Swifties want him, you know, it tred and feathered. Put him in jail. They’re Oh, they’re pretty serious people. Well, let’s be No, they’re pretty unserious about football. That’s uh I honestly I didn’t know. You must follow way different people than me. I never saw any of that. Oh, well, I follow a lot of Chargers fans who were showing me the worst, unfortunately. But uh yeah, I think Tay would be a okay name for her. Maybe not for That’d be kind of funny, though. What about T-Bone? Well, did he match up to the legend of George Castanza? That is that’s a big one, man. Right. That’s a That’s a big one to uh to add on to it. So, I don’t know. But uh uh what about Ente? Just call him that one. Ente and Taylor. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Sure. Why not? I like the the whole number thing. 42. Very football. Yeah. Yeah. No, that’s true. Very 40. Yeah. They just call out numbers lots of times cuz like I don’t even know the guy’s name. I just call them by a number. Yeah. That’s the typical guy thing. Hey buddy, what’s happening? I don’t remember their name. Hey pal. Hey buddy. Oh, it’s a classic. It’s a go-to, right? Everybody has it. You know it. Hey man, what’s up? Right. because you remember the face but you don’t know the name and and then you’re like you’re going through it like everybody out there listening’s gone through it and you you know it I I’ve tried to do that thing when you meet someone for the first time and you say their name inside your head like five times like you’re going to remember sometimes it works but I got to talk to them for more than just a minute otherwise it’s kind of in one ear and out the other it’s not happening but I have found that that does help at times but it’s not always it’s not foolproof right like just hey man what’s happening great to see you cuz you know them. But I’m like, I got no idea. And then because I always try to have a a rule of my, hey, if I don’t introduce you, because normally I’m like, if I know someone right away, hey, hi. You know, if they don’t know someone, I’ll introduce. But if I don’t introduce you, it’s because I don’t know their name. So, introduce yourself, right? That’s the rule. My wife’s the worst. The wor I said, hey, uh, see, they’re going to come out. I don’t remember their name. So, please be I can’t introduce you because then it look like I don’t know their name. So, introduce yourself. Standing there two minutes in, I’m like, but oh, this is my wife Tracy. Like I’m like, then she’s like, oh, hi. I’m like, she doesn’t even ask her name. I’m like, oh, are you joking? right now. Oh. So, so it’s become like a running gag for us. So, hey guys, maybe they’ll just call him teabag because he sacks the quarterback from Nathan. It’s not bad actually. Mind that at all. Got a little funny connotation to it. I could see. And you got to get to know the guy and his personality, too. There’s got to be something that you could connect to make it. So, um, hey, this just coming down. Hank Bsby has been traded to the Eagles in exchange for a fifth and sixth round pick in uh 2026. H Why do you think the Eagles would do that? They have no depth after uh after Quadzilla. What’s going on here? Well, they had uh was it Shipley? I’m going to make sure I shipped and I make sure I get this correct. And they did sign AJ Dylan from the Green Bay Packers. So, a bit of an interesting one there for sure. Shipley did have an injury. He’s questionable for this week. I thought AJ Dylan would be more than capable as a backup after, you know, how big he is. You talk about like you’re giving up like two picks for this guy. Like, and like fifth and sixth round picks are no joke in the NFL. Oh, yeah. In the right hands, that’s a very good one. Bigsby, he’s thirdyear player. Last year did have just under 800 yards, seven majors. I wonder uh what’s going on in Philly. But for the Jags, I guess it kind of makes sense. BSby with all due respect, not that current regime’s guy. Liam Cohen came over as a new head coach, so maybe prefers the services of Travis ETN or sell what he can do and says maybe we don’t need them. But yeah, that’s something for the Packers to or sorry, the Eagles. Con, so I have to ask you um how was your uh how was your first week of fantasy? Fantasy was good. One, my my problem with fantasy and being in multiple leagues is that guys win you leagues and guys lose you leagues. Same player. And that’s what happened. That Derrick Henry won us the fantasy frenzy matchup this week, but in one of my other leagues cost us. He was too good. So, two and one on the week right now. Oh, you’re in three leagues then. Three leagues. Yeah. Yeah. And are they all PPR leagues? What are you in? Uh Fantasy Frenzy’s half a point. One of them is not and the other one is. So, I got it all covered, actually. H All right. How about you? Uh well, I lost in my um in my the league I’ve been in the longest. Um Worthy got hurt on the second play of the game. I lost by uh eight points, so not great. And like Kenneth Walker did nothing for me. So that was not ideal. Um but in the uh the league that I because it’s, you know, it’s week one in our league and I’m like, “Hey, as long as I make the playoffs, it’s all good. You don’t want to lose, but you know, it’s fine.” The um I had a lot of guys just underachieve. Like I had the most points projected and a lot of my guys just stunk it. Like Joe Burrow did nothing. He had like 11 points, right? Like he had like 113 passing yards. So what can you do? Like obviously I’m not benching Joe Burrow. So what do you do? But the guillotine league Connor Hi that I was in first time I’ve ever in a guillotine league. And basically you start with 18 guys and if you lose, you have the not lose, but if you have the fewest points of all 18 teams, you’re out. Yeah. Your season’s over. You’re done. And then the next week someone else. And so I I ended up with But here’s the thing. I looked them like, “Do you get anything for having the most points in a week?” And they’re like, “No.” Well, what the hell? So, I had the most points in that league. Uh, I did have your uh guess who my quarterback is in that league. Jay Herbo. That’s right. So, uh, but my my kicker, everyone mocked me when I took the Arizona kicker. I said, “No, no, no. He’s pretty good.” And he was killing it. A 60 yarder, at a 50 yarder. So, he when your kicker gets you 20 points, you know you’re having a good week. So, I actually this week, this year made it past week one of the survivor pool for the first time as well. Nobody was eliminated in our fantasy frenzy survivor pool. Really? Not one person because there was no real upsets, right? Yeah, that’s true. Broncos and Titans were a bit of a Yeah. No, nobody was picking the No one was going to the Ravens Bills game, right? That’d be way too risky. Far too risky. So, yeah. Shout out to the Denver Broncos. Some people must have had the Bengals. They would have been a little stressed. 100%. And the Broncos, too. Like, I didn’t see the Titans keeping it that close. So yeah, good for them with a, you know, tough environment, young quarterback, but Denver got the job done and we move on to week two. Yeah. Yeah. So we do. Well, folks, as always, thanks for listening, thanks for watching, and thanks for subscribing. We got to our number.
