Shane Lowry was left with mixed emotions on Sunday afternoon after finishing the Irish Open on -7 at the K Club.

The Irishman came into his home event with high hopes of finally getting over the line after what has been a season of near misses on both the PGA and DP World Tours.

There was brilliance and frustration in equal measure throughout his four rounds and, ultimately, a final-round 71 left him ten shots behind the leaders.

Lowry spoke candidly to RTÉ after the round, admitting it had been a bittersweet tournament on home soil.

Shane Lowry opens up on mixed emotions after Irish Open

Shane Lowry put in a solid if unspectacular performance on Sunday at the Irish Open, with a round that he admitted summed up his weekend as a whole.

“There’s so many positives to take, I’m happy going to Wentworth.” Shane Lowry feels that he’s in a good place ahead of the BMW PGA Championship, but admits that his putting will have to improve.

“I placed nicely again today,” Lowry said.

“The weather was a bit miserable out there for a while, it was hard. The golf course played long…it was a grind for the most part. But I felt like I played nice.

“71, it could have been a few better again. But that’s it, that’s the way it’s been all week. I feel like -7 for the tournament is by far the worst score I could be standing here. I’m a little disappointed, but what can you do? I tried my best.”

They were strong words, and Lowry hinted that the pressure of playing in front of an adoring home crowd had played on his mind at times.

Well-versed in playing at the Irish Open at this stage, Lowry said that he had to battle the mental pressure of his home event every year, and that he was “proud” of how he had handled it this year:

This week, there’s a little bit of pressure and a little bit of outside noise for me this week. It’s kind of hard, sometimes. Even though I’ve played in so many Irish Opens, it can be hard sometimes.

I feel like I handle a lot of it very well. I’m pretty proud of myself and pretty happy that way.

But, obviously, I would have liked to have been higher up the leaderboard and made a better run.

It is what it is.

There is a quick turnaround for Shane Lowry before next weekend’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, a tournament he won in 2022.

A fortnight later, and New York will be the destination for his third Ryder Cup.

Despite his disappointment after the Irish Open, Lowry said he had plenty of positives to take into the next few weeks.

There’s so many positives to take from this week. I’m happy going to Wentworth next week. I’ll figure out my putting in the next few days and I’ll be alright. I’ll give it a rattle next week.

It’s all about building towards [the Ryder Cup] as well…things are going well. I feel like I’m in a nice place and I feel like the next few weeks are important to build up to the Ryder Cup. But I feel like I’ll be ready to go at Bethpage.

Shane Lowry certainly gave the home fans plenty to cheer about at the K Club this weekend, even if the result may not have been what he had hoped for.
