I wish no phones would become the standard for golf events. It’s such a better experience.

Never been to one that says no rangefinders.
cryptodog11
I don’t get the driving range restriction. You’re a member and you invite a guest. Your guest arrives and you have to tell them they can’t warm up?
momofuku18
The mention of PDA suggests that this was written about two decades ago. And no update since.

Boomer rules. No shorts is lol

A member can’t bring a guest in the clubhouse for a beer after a round?
Mail_Man_Man
Was lucky enough to play Cypress about 15 years ago and the rangefinder rule was definitely not a thing back then. This card also wasn’t a thing to my knowledge but the rules are pretty standard.
RealLou_JustLou
I would give my left nut to follow those rules, if it meant playing Cypress Point.

anybody bringing a guest to a prestigious place like this that doesn’t already know country club etiquette has got to be very rare.

How can my guest change their shoes in the locker room if they’re not allowed in the clubhouse?
dianelanespanties
I was lucky enough to play that course a number of years ago through a friend of a business acquaintance. We were first off the tee and were able to go into the locker room as well as buy some merchandise in the pro shop. The bags they placed behind us for the second group off included Rick Neuheisel. We did not receive a card with rules like that.

I see this upset the bad birdie golf crowd
Pitiful_Spend1833
Lotta people in the comments here don’t really understand what cypress point is and what they offer.
This is arguably the greatest golf course in the US and possibly the world. The amount of unaccompanied guest play they allow is genuinely unbelievable for a course of this stature. Getting all blustery over some pretty basic rules is asinine.

Are the blue tees the tips?

So we’re *all* teeing off at 7:45am?
IamaFunGuy
People complaining – this is like the most exclusive place to play on the west coast. You need to be pretty connected just to be a guest. Also a lot of people griping about the shorts – the weather here is usually pretty cool and I really don’t think you’d notice. Turns out you have to follow some rules. Suck it up for four hours and enjoy an epic round.

Initiation fee of 250k! Annual Dues: Estimates suggest about $48,000 per year (approximately $4,000 per month)
Ill stick to my rod buster hobby of iron working. Is golf generally this expensive?
BitterResearch983
Why is everyone complaining about this? Generally you’re given this information up front from the member (or they should provide all rules up front). Just because the course doesn’t adhere to your personal idea of how golf should be played, doesn’t mean they are in the wrong. It’s simply how they want to operate their privately owned facility. Don’t accept the invite if you don’t like it.
SlavOnfredski
On one hand, I’m thinking, “Golf is so damn elitist”
On the other hand, I’m thinking, “you see? This is why Golf is such a classy game”
If you’re in the club- it feels good to be a member.

I can’t believe all you losers are complaining about playing golf as it was played 40 years ago. This sounds like an awesome step back in time.

This is one of the more playable super private clubs out there since the member doesn’t have to be with you. Which is why some of these rules probably are written

A private club having rules?
First of all, seeing these rules, I would never play here, just cause it’s not my style. But it does bug me that guests cannot use the range. That just seems unfair. It seems pretty arbitrary on top of the litany of other rules here. God forbid a guy wants to warm up a little before dropping $200+ on a round of golf.
onthepak
They “suggest” the following. None of those bullet points sound like requirements to me.
shoresy99
This appears to be for unaccompanied guests. Apparently Cypress has a few tee times first thing in the morning for unaccompanied guests. I am thinking that if you are the guest of a member then some of these don’t apply.
EntrancedOrange
“Please arrive at the club between 7-7:15am” is that implying they only have 1-2 tee times for members to bring a guest?

“Eff them rules, I’d never play there with crusty old ish like that.” – people who will never have the opportunity to play there anyway.
bhd_ui
I like the non-members yielding to members play and the single digit handicaps playing from the blues. Wish every club had these rules.
SurprisedByItAll
The initiation fee for membership at Cypress Point Club is reported to be $250,000. The club’s annual dues are determined by dividing the total operating expenses equally among all members, meaning each member pays the same amount regardless of their frequency of play or visits. The club maintains a strict membership limit of 250 members, and access to play is restricted to members and their invited guests, with membership typically granted only by invitation.
begoodformegirl
I was going to say the mention of PDA’s makes me believe this hasn’t been updated in two decades, but then I realized the type of person who is golfing at Cyprus Point Club probably still used a PDA, pager, or some other obsolete device.
ShufflingToGlory
Something I’ve noticed about the very privileged is that they occasionally enjoy having a restrictive set of rules to follow.
When your life is fairly unrestricted by financial or hierarchical concerns there’s some novelty and comfort in larping that you’re back in prep school with the dress code, honour code, strict masters and so on.
There’s probably an element of ritualism that appeals as well. People are quick to jump to “snobbery” and “exclusivity” but don’t underestimate the Freudian weirdness of very rich old men!
SwingView
Rangefinders ruin the deceptive illusions of the course and diminish the effect of the skill of the caddie. I do not like that they allow rangefinders in tour events now. In the past, the PGA Tour would even ask to remove 150 markers, and cover all sprinkler heads. This includes trees used as 150 markers. This is why the practice of trees as markers is not as popular today.
The no guests on the range rule is weird, but it’s in a weird spot and might annoy other players.

Honestly, these aren’t my big complaint about Cypress Point. My complaint would be that they got kicked off the PGA Tour in 1990 for being so racist they wouldn’t allow even a single person who wasn’t white to join as a member. They eventually caved, but I still don’t think I’d feel comfortable playing there or any other club with a similar history.

Adventurous_Pride_54
Cypress Point withdrew from hosting the Crosby AT&T Pro-Am in the 1990’s rather than comply with the PGA requirements to admit black members. The kinds of dress codes you see in Cypress’s rules are a gatekeeping mechanism that have roots in more pernicious forms of gatekeeping, such as the racial exclusions at Cypress that persisted until Condoleeza Rice was admitted in 2013. 2013 was recent. Not enough time has passed for me to want to spend my money to support Cypress’s history of racial exclusion. I don’t care how great the golf is.
