European Ryder Cup fans told Bryson DeChambeau his comment to the US Walker Cup team about ‘bringing your ego’ was precisely the wrong mindset ahead of the Bethpage showdown.

DeChambeau will make his return to golf’s biggest stage in a few weeks’ time when Keegan Bradley’s Team USA take on Luke Donald’s Europe.

The LIV Golf recruit has not played in a Ryder Cup since he helped Steve Stricker’s red, white and blue dismantle Padraig Harrington’s dozen 19-9 at Whistling Straits.

DeChambeau thrilled his home fans that week and he has promised to bring a ‘tsunami’ of fans to New York.

In all likelihood, it seems more than reasonable to suggest the US will win back the Cup, given how important home advantage has been since 2012.

But if the blue and gold pull off an improbably victory, the European fans will be quick to remind DeChambeau of the comment he made to the US Walker cup team.

DeChambeau made a surprise trip to Cypress Point yesterday to rally the troops ahead of the final day of the two-day contest.

His speech clearly worked, as Team USA stormed to a 17-9 victory.

The 31-year-old told the USGA’s social media team that he delivered the same message to the amateurs as Bradley.

“I did speak to Team USA,” he said. “And it’s a similar inspiration that our captain has provided us for the Ryder Cup this year.

“And it’s bringing your ego. Being who you know you are.”

DeChambeau’s remark left an impression.

One commented: “Bring your ego? If it was in Europe I believe it would be a mauling. Home advantage gives them a chance.”

Over the next few weeks, plenty of pundits and former players will offer their verdict as to who they believe will win.

Controversial Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee recently claimed the European team simply want to win more as they are better at leaving their egos at the door.

People roll their eyes when you say this, but it is demonstrably true that the Europeans are more passionate about the Ryder Cup.

“It’s not to say that the US doesn’t want it. They do. But Europe wants it more.”

Chamblee also said finding the right partner for DeChambeau will be troublesome.
