Rory McIlroy’s 72nd-Hole EAGLE → Playoff Win at The Irish Open

Rory McIlroy delivered a home-nation classic at The K Club. Starting Sunday four shots behind the lead, Rory clawed back, then drilled a ~28–30-foot eagle putt on the 72nd to tie Joakim Lagergren at −17 and force extra holes. In the playoff, they traded birdies on the first two, before Lagergren’s approach found water on the third and Rory closed with a birdie to claim his second Amgen Irish Open title.

Early fireworks? Rafa Cabrera Bello’s ace at the par-3 3rd lit up Sunday and tightened the pack.

This video recaps Sunday’s swings, the 18th-green eruption, and the playoff finish—plus a quick look at what this means heading into BMW PGA and the Ryder Cup.

Sunday at the K Club. World number two, Rory Mroy starts four shots back of overnight leader Adrien Sadia. The chase is on and bang, early spark to write the rolls. Rafa Cabrera Bellow aces the par 33 to light up the crowds and vault himself into the hunt. Across the course, Sadia gives ground. Sweden’s Yoakim Lagrin surges late. Eagle. [Music] Oh, Lagger. What a shot. What a shot. At 16. Magnificent. An Eagle three at 18. This is good stuff from Marin. Indeed it is. Well done. That’s birdie plants a clubhouse target at 17 under 72nd hole. [Applause] That’s Rory needs eagle to tie. But he’s given himself a chance. He’s got 20some feet. One red, one roll. Aaroy Eagles the last and down it goes. We’re tied at 17 under. Back down 18. Once twice, still level. Third extra hole. Lagrren finds the water. Rory steady from the rough [Applause] and cleans up birdie. Ireland erupts. Not to be. Maroy provides the X factor at the second Irish Open crown at the K Club. Sealed the hard way. Eagle to playoff. Let Rory tell it. Just so lucky that I get to do this. I get to do this in front of these people. um from four back to the trophy. So happy I could play play the way I did um this week for all of them and and get the win. Finish for the folklore at the K Club. What a Sunday. Didn’t get this Augusta, did you? I didn’t. This was this is uh hopefully be getting a bit of it in a few weeks time at the Ryder Cup.
