ALTOONA, Wis. – The Gustavus Adolphus College women’s golf team is competing in the Blugold Georgianni Invitational this weekend against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugolds, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Eagles, and Viterbo University V-Hawks. The Gusties lead the field after the opening day with a team score of +41.
“The team had a solid first day on the course, managing some tough pin placements and fast greens,” said Gustavus assistant coach Sarah Wolter. “The wind was a factor because the course is right next to a lake, so the players had more up and downs than usual but persevered for some impressive saves. Overall, it was a good start to the tournament despite higher scores than usual and we look forward to traversing a new course, Eau Claire Country Club, tomorrow.”
The Eagles trail Gustavus in second place by 13 strokes at +54, the Blugolds are third at +59, and the V-Hawks follow the Gustie and Eagle B-teams in sixth place at +91.
Addison Longie and Lauren Hubbart lead Gustavus at +9 after the opening round, tying them for second overall out of the field of 36 golfers.
Riley Zebroski follows right after Longie and Hubbart at fourth overall with an opening round of +11.
Teckla Wahlstrand rounds out the top-four counted scores for the Gusties after round one at +12, placing the first-year in a three-player tie for fifth overall.
“The team played really well today and everyone was very resilient through some tough holes,” said Hubbart. “The greens were playing hard and fast after the course hosted a senior amateur tournament, but we were able to get the hang of them as our round carried on. I’m looking forward to seeing how our team finishes up tomorrow at Eau Claire Country Club.”
Gustavus will compete in the final day of the Blugold Georgianni Invitational on Sunday, September 7.
