NORMAL, Ill. – Indiana State women’s golf begins the fall season at the Redbird Invitational, hosted by Illinois State.
The tournament takes place on Sept. 7-8, with an 8:30 a.m. ET shotgun start both days. Weibring Golf Club is a par-72 course with total yardage of 6,093. There are 16 total teams in the Sycamores’ opening tournament, including Illinois State, Drake, Evansville, Northern Iowa, and Valparaiso.
Head coach Greg Towne, entering his 16th season as head coach of the Sycamores, has his first lineup of the fall: Yang Tai, Keira Brazeau, Sophia Florek, Rosie DiNunzio, and Gabby Cone. Alana Gilbert will be playing as an individual.
In this tournament last fall, Indiana State finished 12th of 15 teams, led by Florek (+16, +5, +4, +7) and DiNunzio (+20, +9, +3, +8).
Tai returns as one of two seniors on the team. At the end of last season, she was named to the Scholar-Athlete First Team and named a recipient of the State Farm Good Neighbor Award. Last season, she was the lowest finisher at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship, finishing 25th with a 231 (+15, 76-75-80).
Brazeau is a true freshman debuting as the No. 2 in the lineup. She is a Palatine, Ill. native.
Florek was the third-lowest finisher for the Sycamores in tie in 45th place (240, +24, 80-84-76).
DiNunzio competed in the conference championship and finished the three-day tournament with a 243 (+27, 83-82-78). Cone will make her first start in the lineup in her career after playing in seven-of-10 events one season ago. Gilbert was the second-lowest finisher at conference with a 238 (+22, 85-72-81).
Following this tournament, the Sycamores will return to the course on Sept. 29-30 at the Butler Fall Invitational, played at the Highland Golf & Country Club.
