13 handicap looking to improve my gapping by adding a few new clubs. Currently don't hit my 4iron well (although the avg distance number is skewed by some punch outs) and rarely use this club anymore so will probably take it out of my bag. My longest club from the fairway is my 19degree 3H which goes 220 on a good strike. Thinking of adding a 3W but have heard they can be tough to hit and people prefer a 5W or 7W instead. Also thinking of replacing my wedges with a 54 and 58degree to add an extra spot in my bag as my Cleveland gap wedge is 49degrees. What are your thoughts on the best clubs to add or take out?

Lessons. Maybe Mizuno JPX Hot Metal. Those got me back on track, then I updated.

I’m a much worse golfer than you, but I don’t really find a 3w all that difficult to hit. I know a lot of people do, but for whatever reason I hit mine better than a number of clubs in my bag.. I’d try a few before ruling it out.

If you want something that would go closer to that distance but is easy to hit. Callaway makes something called a “heavenwood”. It’s essentially a 7w, with a head size closer to a 5+w, and a shaft length closer to a 3w.. really easy to launch, hits a tad further the most 5w, and because it’s so easy to get up in the air typically has better stopping power than a 3w. It’s my favorite club in my bag, but also the least hit. Pretty much only gets used when I don’t quite need a 3w but need more than my 5h. It’s essentially a really long 7w.

Have your iron lofts checked to make sure they are to spec. Drop the 4 iron and add a 4 hybrid and 3HL or 5 wood.
