Daniel Montero isn’t sure what compelled him to raise his camera phone an instant before Charlie Woods took the club back for his tee shot at the par-3 third hole of the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass on Aug. 31 during the final round of the Junior Players Championship.

“I guess you never know when you’re going to see greatness,” said the sports medicine physician at the Mayo Clinic, who was at the Junior Players as a volunteer.

He saw it and captured it on video as the 16-year-old Woods, the son of two-time Players champion Tiger Woods, made his second hole-in-one in tournament competition in the last eight months when his 186-yard shot at No. 3 rolled into the hole.

Woods, who hit a 7-iron to the back-left pin placement, was fairly low-key about celebrating the shot. He was congratulated by playing partners Coltrane Mittag and Davis Wotnosky and put the club back in his bag.

When he arrived at the green, Woods repaired the ball mark a few feet to the left of the hole and then calmly picked the ball out of the cup.

“I was aiming for the middle of the green and it happened to go in,” Woods told ajga.org.

The ace was part of an up-and-down day for Woods, who shot 76-75 in the first two rounds. He shot even-par 72 with the ace, four birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey, which came at No. 4, right after his hole-in-one. Woods finished 7-over 223 for the tournament and tied for 31st.

Miles Russell won the tournament at 8-under 208.

Charlie Woods aced a hole with his father watching in Orlando

Woods had the first hole-in-one of his young life at the fourth hole of the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando during the final round of the PNC Championship in December, a two-player tournament for PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions players and their children or other relatives.

When he made that hole-in-one, his father gave him a bear hug and a playful shove.

Watching among the small crowd for his ace at the Stadium Course was Woods’ mother Elin Nordegren, who was not in Orlando for the PNC.

Montero texted the video to Woods’ mother, who expressed her appreciation that she was able to be there for this one.

“She was very happy to have seen this one,” Montero said.

Woods gets second ace at Junior Players this week

Before the 19th Players Championship, there had been only two holes-in-one in tournament history, and none since 2020.

There have been two this week. Cameron Kuchar, also the son of a past Players champion (2012 winner Matt Kuchar), aced No. 3 in the first round.

The only aces before this week were in 2007 by Taylor Travis (at No. 3) and in 2020 by Bryan Lee (at No. 17).

Montero, who has been at the Mayo Clinic for 18 years, said he will always be thankful was in the right place and pulled his phone out at the right time.

“Like father, like son,” he said.
