Zack Bourgeois recorded eight birdies on his way to a round of 6-under 66 to lead Baylor School to the City Prep boys’ championship on Wednesday at Bear Trace at Harrison Bay. The freshman from Canada was one of three Red Raiders to shoot under par, joined by Mason Bankston and Owen Bible with scores of 1-under 71 as Baylor posted an aggregate of 3-under for the day to win by four strokes over Signal Mountain.

Led by senior Carlee Rogers, who was medalist at 1-under 71, the Baylor girls made it a clean sweep by carding an aggregate of even par to outdistance runner-up Bradley Central by 12 shots. The win marked Rogers fourth straight year in capturing this event.

Signal Mountain’s Sam Otwell compiled a bogey-free afternoon with seven birdies to claim medalist honors in the boys’ competition, his 7-under 65 one shot better than Bourgeois. Bradley Central’s Andrew Suttles placed 3rd after carding a 4-under 68, while Rhea County’s Eli Everett joined Bankston and Bible at 1-under 71 to earn a tie for 4th.

McCallie School’s Will Elrod and Carson McHarge of Chattanooga Christian were deadlocked in 7th place after posting rounds of even par 72.

Signal Mountain was runner-up in the boys’ team battle at 1-over, followed by McCallie at 5-over, Bradley Central at 9-over and Chattanooga Christian at 13-over.

Rogers was one behind Ooltewah’s Duck Troxell with two holes remaining, but clutch birdies on 17 and 18 gave the University of Miami commit a one-shot victory. Rogers finished her day with four birdies against three bogeys.

Troxell birdied her opening two holes to make an early statement, moving to 3-under through seven holes before closing at even par 72.

Baylor’s Katie Grace Tuder placed 3rd at 1-over 73, three shots better than Alli Troxell of Boyd-Buchanan at 4-over 76. Soddy-Daisy’s Addison Ryland was alone in 5th with her 5-over 77, while a pair of Bradley Central golfers – Colby Ann Turner and Addie Geren – were joined by Chattanooga Christian’s Nora Strain in a tie for 6th at 6-over 78.

Bradley Central posted a team score of 12-over to finish second. Soddy-Daisy was 3rd at 19-over, Chattanooga Christian 4th at 21-over, and Signal Mountain 5th at 23-over.

Wednesday also marked the end of an era in the oversight of the City Prep tournament. For the past decade, the event has been expertly administered by the Chattanooga District Golf Association’s Mike Jenkins and recently retired Signal Mountain coach Rodney Mitchell.

Picking up the baton from Jenkins and Mitchell will be Tennessee Golf Foundation regional director Lamar Mills and WindStone Golf Club head professional Jeff Craig.
