An 11-year-old from Co Louth, who is in remission from acute myeloid leukaemia, had his wish to meet his idol Shane Lowry granted yesterday.

Dáire Coyle received his first set of golf clubs from Santa last Christmas and has been practising with his dad, who described it as a “dream come true” for his son to meet the golfing great in Kildare before the Amgen Irish Open got under way at The K Club.

Acute myeloid leukaemia is a rare cancer that affects the bone marrow and blood.

Make-A-Wish Ireland put the plans in place for Dáire to meet Lowry.

They met during the Pro-Am at The K Club yesterday and played the ninth hole together. Dáire took the putts for the golfer as he asked Lowry (38) about his career and how long he planned to continue playing for.

“This wish has meant the absolute world to Dáire, who gave it an 11 out of 10,” the boy’s father, David, said.

Dáire, who enjoyed his first ride in a golf buggy through the course, was also joined by his mother Orla and brothers Eoin (16) and Donal (13), with the Coyle family staying at the Westgrove Hotel in Clane where they were greeted by a surprise hamper of golf-themed goodies.

We were treated like royalty from beginning to end

“Meeting Shane Lowry has been a dream come true. Golf is a big thing for our family and without Make-A-Wish we never would have had this opportunity,” Mr Coyle said.

“We not only got to experience the Amgen Irish Open, but we were also treated like royalty from beginning to end. Nothing was too much trouble.

“Seeing the happiness on Dáire’s face is something we will never forget. We’re so grateful to Make-A-Wish and everyone involved for giving us this gift as a family.”

Make-A-Wish Ireland chief executive Susan McQuaid O’Dwyer said: “The resilience shown by children like Dáire inspires us all.

“A wish is so much more than a single moment – it brings joy, hope and treasured memories to the whole family, reminding them of what really matters.”

She said the organisation is “deeply grateful to Shane Lowry for his generosity, and to DP World Tour and Amgen for making this extraordinary wish possible at the Irish Open”.

The Open begins with the Celebrity Pro-Am, followed by four tournament days featuring some of the world’s top golfers including Rory McIlroy and Lowry.
