Out of all this equipment here, there is one piece that if neglected, it can destroy your golf game. And the crazy thing is every golfer throughout time has used this piece of equipment. Well, you may have guessed it, or you may be like lots of other golfers who give this no thought at all. And the piece of equipment, if not looked after correctly and overlooked, that will be detrimental to your game, it’s the grip. And to prove our point as to how detrimental it can be if you aren’t using the right grips or you’re overlooking and neglecting them, we have a real life student with us today who, ladies and gentlemen, will be doing a few tests to see how detrimental they can be. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Mr. John Evans. John, welcome to the channel, sir. Hi, Matt. So, to prove our point about grips, I’m going to ask you two questions here, John. Do you know what these grips are on your golf clubs? Make and model. I know they’re uh golf pride, but no, I don’t know which model they are. Ding, ding, ding. You’ve got that in one. You are on a golf ride, and it’s a tour velvet standard grip. Probably the most popular grip out there. Now, actually, interestingly, 85% of you said that you would know the make a model of your grips. I would suggest a lot of people are like John in that they know that they may be golf prides but wouldn’t know the exact model. Next question. Were you fit for your grip, sir? No. No. Just pick them off the shelf. There you go. That’s what you’ve got. Do you buy the same size glove every time? Yes. Weird that, isn’t it? Well, 88% of you are like John and you weren’t fit for your grips. Just think about when you get a pair of shoes. Do you get them fit? Yes, because we all have different sized feet. like we do have different size hands. Size glove are you? XL small. Wouldn’t be very good if I wore that one. To prove how detrimental the uh grips are going to be. We’re going to put you through two tests, John. We’ve got a club here that is the same of yours. This is actually one of my teaching clubs. Hundreds of shots have been hit with that. It’s very worn. And I’ve also got your driver there with a very worn grip on it. I’m going to put you against worn versus new to see how bad it can be. You ready for it? Yeah. I’ve also got a little challenge for you at the end if you’re willing to take it. You might get a full set of grips, you might not. All right, go on guys. Let’s get stuck into this. So, before we get started, John, used grips versus worn grips. What effect do you think it’s going to have? Do you think it’s going to be that bad or do you think you’ll be okay with it? No. Straight away when you get hold of this one, um there there’s not as much grip there. You you feel like it’s um it’s going to move in your hands. Yeah. as if it’s going to have quite a bad effect. I would say so because I don’t feel like I’ve got a hold of it with me right hand at all. It’s just what you want that. That’s confidence building, isn’t it? Right then. Well, what we’re going to do, we’re going to do a dispersion test um to start off with. So, you’ve got a 7 iron in hand here. You roughly hit your 7 about 140 normally. The grip has been, like I say, it’s our teaching club that is actually the same model as yours and pretty much the same spec. We’ll be using this again with a new grip shortly that’s actually fitted to your size. So, we’ve done a grip fitting. We know what size you are. We’re going to hit five shots out here. We’re on Kings Barnes. It’s 142 to the flag here. This is your seven iron. We’re going to have a look at what um what it does to your dispersion. Your current green stat for you. We’ve looked at some of your data and you’re hitting 33% of greens and you’re is it 18 handicap at the minute? So, you’re round pretty much average there at the moment. So, out of the five shots, two of them on the green would be pretty decent. But take it away in a second. Have you had a practice swing with it yet? Is it even? No. No. You’re too scared to let go of it. Yeah. Oh, not a bad start. Not your normal distance, but it’s okay. Strike was good. It’s okay. If they don’t feel right in the hand, I feel Yeah. out of place straight away before I even take the club away. I I’d almost go to the point where I’d hit one shot and I wouldn’t hit another shot with it. Yeah. Lovely strike. Lovely strike. What a golf shot that is. Yeah. What would prompt you to change your grips if you were once I feel that they’re um sliding in me hands, I think. Yeah. That slippiness be the key. How many times have you reg gripped your golf club? Uh once. Once. And how many sets have you owned? Um have you owned more sets than you’ve reg gripped your club? Three sets of golf clubs. Yeah. And they’ve had one set of grips changed. One set of grips. Yeah. Yeah. Nice swing. Okay. Overall, happy, not happy with those. Uh, yeah, two of them are decent, but um, you don’t feel confident when you’re hitting the club with the grips. You don’t feel confident. Okay. Okay. We’re looking at dispersion there. Offline, you’re 52 feet offline. On average, you’re 22 feet because you had that one ball that went to the right hand side. In terms of the carry numbers, we know that you’re about 140 with that seven iron. There is a dud two in there, which if we just got rid of those, we’re saying you, you know, you wouldn’t normally hit shots like that. We can put that down to grip. You’re down to 101. Club head speed of 60 m 65 miles per hour. Yeah. Normally, you’re at like 75, 80. Yeah. So, you’re down significantly already. We’re going to change the grip on that. Your best shot, by the way, just so we know, the best shot was seven feet left of the flag. Yeah, pretty good that. Yeah, from 142 yards was the flag. Yeah, we’d take that all day long. That ball carried a lot further um than it would norm Well, sorry, it actually ran a little bit more than it would normally do. So, we’re going to change the grip. We’re going to fit into your size and see how much of an effect that has on it. So, we’ve had the old, we’ve now got the new. just get your hands around. That’s a like for like to velvet for to velvet. Initial thoughts. Yeah, straight away, isn’t it? The um it’s just grippier on on the old one in terms of like a confidence and when it’s in your hands and you stood over the ball about to hit the shot, were you more focused on the grip than you were the actual shot? Obviously, we’re in a studio, but yeah, but obviously you’re worried you want to strike the ball and hit the ball, but with the old grip there, um, yeah, you were more conscious about it. So, I felt like I was gripping down on it into my screen. No, I didn’t. Off or the camera or the camera. But with this one, straight away with your right hand especially, you can just feel the grip and you feel confidence. If if you were a non-glove wearer as well, that would obviously come through even more. Obviously, your lead hand, your left for the right handed player, you’ve got a glove on there, but like you say in the right, you’re going to feel that sort of tackiness to it straight away. Okay. Right. Well, we’re back now on the second hole here. We’re going to go again. Okay, five shots. Let’s see how you perform. Okay, little chunky, but left. That was longer than your average carry. And your club head speed was up already. Great swing. This could go in the hole. This you’re due to play Kings Barn soon, so that would uh Yeah, that’s it. You take that on the second. Yeah. Would change your grip when you get on the tea. Yeah, that’s right. Shot on. Yeah. Just feel a lot better, don’t they? I think that’s the thing. Like we can’t see what you’re feeling, but obviously the shots that we’re seeing. Yeah. A light year is different. That’s right. Ah, no. Good. That one. We big you up too much. We up. There’s more of your normal distance. That’s right. Backing it up as well. Sign of a true player. Right. Then let’s take a look. How does the old versus the new affect your dispersion? Well, I think firstly it comes down to feeling. Yeah, definitely feeling. It It is confidence, isn’t it? So, um you you’re just more confident in the um holding it. Nicer. Yeah, it feels nicer in your hand. Um so, if you just feel more confident when you stood over the ball. Yeah, very true. Very true. So, if we look at some data now and we see five shots versus five shots as we go through, 22 feet to the left was your average with the old worn grip. As you said, it felt slippy. You were holding it tighter, weren’t as confident to actually give it a go and more conscious of actually holding on to the club instead of swinging the golf club. You’re nine feet to the right. So, you’ve harved it. Yeah. And a little bit more as you’ve gone through. Interestingly, as well, when we look in terms of what the um the carry numbers are and what your club head speeds are as well, you’ve gained more yardage here. So, you’ve gained seven yards. Yeah. But you had that real bad duff one in there. You had one bad duff one. Then, if we looked at sort of shot be shot, I would say they were more flighted all the others. They actually got up. They went distant, you know, the normal distances. your your longest one with the the um slippy one 119 and then your longest one was 150. So you’ve gained 31 yards and you hit the green with that as well. You got it to the back of the green. So we’re seeing actually it has a huge effect on that dispersion already. You know, we can see there h haveved as you’ve gone through. Yeah. So the next test we want to go through to see how detrimental a grip if not looked after correctly is all to do with speed. Obviously you’ve got driver in hand here. This is the club that we want to smash. We want to swing it good. And as you alluded to earlier with the irons and we’ve seen what effect that they can have when we have used undernourished grips versus a new grip. One of the things that you were talking about was how it actually feels in your hands slippy like you’re going to let go. So it’ll be interesting in this test now because driver we want to hit it far. We also want to create some club head speed. You teeter below 100. You’re around 95 as normal as your normal swing speed. Okay. You’ve got this used grip on there. We’ve got one that is looks like a snake’s back compared to a normal grip because it’s had hundreds and hundreds of shots hit with it. So now we’re going to see again over five shots. We’ve got the fairway. Obviously we would want like to hit the fairway. That would be an ideal thing, but we’re going to see how distance and dispersion plays into this. So, five shots again, make your normal golf swing. Does it feel great in your hands? It’s still slippier than me own. Yeah. When I grab hold of me own grips, they do um I feel um more confident than what I do with these. Yeah. I’m either going to have to grip it a lot tighter to feel like I’ve got a hold of it. Um, which isn’t good, is it? No. Take that one. Nice shot. Um, it’s not gone that far though, has it? Yeah. You tell me. I thought that was your Sunday best. Yeah. Good direction, weren’t they? Yeah. What would you normally expect to be carrying that drive around that 185 is it for yourself? 200 back I think with me own. Great swing. Great swing. Tell you what, take your fairways hit percentage. Wouldn’t we get a grouping on them? Great shot. What a shot to finish on that. Brilliant. Yeah, very very straight sir. How did they feel overall to you? Yeah, the shots are fine, aren’t they? But as I say, I just don’t feel confident with the grip at all in that you can’t swing it fast. Yeah, probably I’m feeling like I’m having to concentrate on it. And um I am gripping it slightly tighter. I was always told to hold it like a uh toothpaste without it squirting out of the end. Yeah, just just gentle. Yeah. Yeah, you do want it. you know, you will increase your grip pressure as you go on, but it’s interesting there because we’re going to put them up again in a minute. Now, you said you’ve not been fit for your grips. No. Interestingly, on Golf Pride’s website, there is a fitting tool that you can go and look at and it will take you through a grip process. As I alluded to earlier, I wear a small glove, you wear an XL glove, so we shouldn’t have the same size grips. If I had a big grip on it, it feels awful to me. It can also have an an effect on how you release the club as well and how hard you are holding it. If it’s really thin and you’ve got big hands, you will tend to strangle it. If it’s really big and it’s you can’t get your hands around it, you can’t apply the right pressure. So, we’re going to put you through that fitting now because if you then beat your club head speed that we’ve seen here now, you can win a full set of grips that you select off there. Right. Okay. We’re going to go through the process with John now, just so you can check out. totally free to do and it’s interesting to see what you actually come out with because what you’ve got on your clubs, I probably bet they aren’t the grips that you should be having on your clubs right now. I was fitted once about 5 years ago. Um, but I was just past a load of grips and we just said which feels comfortable and that was it. Do you know I didn’t even know that you could get a grip for moisture control? They uh it has come up with midsize and a tall velvet cord. So, I’ve just put in um I went for firmness for um the moisture and I asked for the texture uh to be rough. Um so, I’m guessing that’s why it’s come up with the um a togo. Now, what’s interesting about your driver, the driver was struck really well last time. The dispersion, as we can see on the map, really, really tight. Your distance though was well, well down. Um 156 yards on average, 82 miles per hour. I would sacrifice two of these balls not being on the fairway as long as they were in play and playable. Yeah. To get 30 more yards. Yeah. Well, you know, we’ll flash it up here now. Your you know, your current driver head speed 95 miles an hour, 189 carry. Let’s Let’s see what we do with five here. We’ll just call it quits. Yeah. It’s all like that, ain’t it? Just a little bit longer. Little bit longer. Yeah, just a little bit longer. Again, very similar shapes to your others, aren’t they? But yeah. Is this how does it feel in the hands with this one? Very similar. Um, again, it’s all confidence, isn’t it? You’ve just got confidence in it because you know it’s not going to slip in your hands. So, I think that’s it. Um, what would you hesitate looking at your old ones? You know, we saw that distance lacking on the driver in the dispersion. What would you put as a shot value around the golf course? What would you say it’s costing if your grips are like what they were before? Well, it’s probably one shot a hole. It could be, couldn’t it? If um Yeah. Yeah. I’d say conservatively like I’d put it down as five, but yeah, you’re probably right. You know, a bit of a slip and it’s it’s game over, isn’t it? Yeah. Just caught the ground a little bit with that one. It’s okay. A uh a new grip can’t save a completely poor swing. Yeah. Shot. Last one. Last one. Make it count. Strike. Beautiful. Yeah. Sound. Right. So, looking at your driver stats here, John, we know that 84 miles an hour was the previous. Yeah. And we knew that 155 was the um average carry. Very good. As we saw last one, five out of five on the fairway. Not quite the story on this one. We actually only got two on the fairway. Um, but the good news is is that your club head speed, you gained 4 and a half miles an hour um overall on average with even with that slightly dodgy one where you caught the ground a little bit. So up to 88 miles an hour there. And then in terms of carry distance, as we know, distance has been proven is a huge help in the game. We’ve gone up to 182 from 154. 28 y difference. And as you said earlier, you know, how many strokes would it be? One a hole, you know, if you’re stood hitting a seven iron from your 154 shot. Yeah. You’re only going in with pitching wedge on the other. And I would probably fancier to hit a better shot with a pitching wedge. So huge, huge improvement there. One final challenge for you. It was to beat the club head speed. I’m going to set the marker for you. Right. Okay. So, we saw that your best one was actually 90 miles an hour. Yeah. So, can you beat 90 mph club head speed and get it over your average best carry distance? Right. Okay. Yeah. So, two goes at it. You get with a brand new grip, unless you want me to get the slippy one back out for you. If you do this, we obviously saw you go through the grip selection process before. You get four 13 because you’re not going to put one of those on your putter. You get 13 new grips, sir. So, couple of practice swings. Yeah. You’re getting two shots to go a little further. And would, you know, having a new grip on, would you say it’s going to help? You wouldn’t feel it’s achievable with the old so. Yeah. See where the first one goes? Bit taller. Look at that. Look at that. Well, you’ve got the you’ve got the distance number, John. Yeah. 204. That’s cruel. That is cruel. 89 was 83 club head speed for a 185 carry. Yeah. Let’s go again. Let’s go again. Who? Go on. Get up there. Look at your cupboard speed. 95.19. Not quite the distance. 173, but straight down the middle again. And no fear of throwing the club into the screen, I would imagine. Yeah. No, no. Absolutely. We’ll give you those 13 grips. Well done, sir. Thank you very much, guys. Let us know down in the comments down below. A lot of you voted on the poll earlier. Which part of that resonated most with you? And what would be your feelings if the grips weren’t feeling good? If they were worn and shiny and horrible, what would that make you feel when you were stood over a pressure shot? Thanks for watching and why not watch another video here to see if you’ve got the right driver for your game.

⛳️How many shots do you think this equipment if neglected would cost you in a round?
If the grips start to get hard it’s the lack of control especially in the wet. I really struggle
When the grips Get wet, but I do clean the grips typically once a month.
Matt, how often should grips be changed / how many rounds do they typically last?
It's definitely an issue I've found controlling the face with older worn out grips.
Just remember that rainy day when you couldn't keep hold of your clubs. That's the difference a worn grip can be. I'd say 2 to 3 shots lost per hole. Nice one Matt.
Great video Matt❤
At least 3 shots a hole I did however go and get a club fitting
What would surprise me is in going for fitted clubs the fitter didn’t advise grip fitting at the same time.
I think it’s important to find a grip you like and have them in good condition…but I don’t think there is any data to show a correlation between golf performance and grips fitted relative to hand size .
My experience with grips is this: If the material is still reasonably supple, then clean them using a wet scrub sponge and some dish soap. This rinses off the hand oil that makes them slick. But if the grips feel hard and dry (you can tell by trying to peel off a piece at the bottom of the grip) then it is time for a change. Thx/MG.
I was surprised to learn that tour golf players use a firm to strong grip pressure at start up but relax the grip pressure during the transition to the downswing. 👍
Golf Pride tour velvet grips are the quickest to wear out. I like tacky grips.
