There are many reasons why the Walker Cup is an essential watch for any golf enthusiast. It’s an event rich with history, it’s a refreshing taste of team match play, and it’s an opportunity to follow some potential stars of the future. But this year, it shall also present a rare glimpse of what many people believe is the best course in the United States.

Resting on cliffs near the far more visible Pebble Beach, Cypress Point is staging the 50th Walker Cup in 2025, which it last hosted back in 1981. The match between the USA and Great Britain and Ireland will be televised on Saturday and Sunday.

One of the most exclusive golf clubs on the planet, with only 250 members, having been hired by the influential amateur and course developer Marion Hollins, this extraordinary layout was designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, who partnered with collaborator Robert Hunter in 1929 to create a course that has thrilled architecture lovers ever since.

It’s a remarkable location, and Cypress Point is renowned for its holes that run alongside the rocky coastline, providing both spectacular visuals and a breathtaking test of golf, with the 16th being easily one of the most famous in the game. This engaging video on YouTube tells its full story.

Cypress Point

Though once part of the PGA Tour’s formerly named Bing Crosby Pro-Am, it’s been well over 30 years since its last appearance in that annual event, meaning that this coming weekend is a fleeting chance to gaze inside doors that remain perenially closed to all but a select few.

But just how good is Cypress Point? It placed first on Top100GolfCourses.com’s ranking of best golf courses in the USA, while it sat third on Golf Digest’s 2025 list of America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses.

Earlier this year, LINKS Magazine released an intriguing new worldwide ranking, which was determined solely by golf course architects. The premise of this endeavour was simply: “Who better to judge the comparative merits of golf courses than the men and women who design them for a living?”

These educated minds submitted their votes and ratings, and when all was collated, Cypress Point was listed as the best golf course in the world, edging out Pine Valley, Royal County Down, National Golf Links of America, and the Old Course at St Andrews in the top five.

Seeing many of the finest amateur golfers take on a magical setting such as Cypress Point is a treat, one that isn’t afforded often, and it’s something that anyone who loves the game should embrace.

You will have likely heard and read about Cypress Point, but now is your chance to see it and discover what the type is truly about.
