So, I started golfing 09/07/2024. Never set foot on a golf course before then. Immediately got hooked and picked up the most affordable set of clubs I could find that day.

Play It Again Sports. 2i-Pw. $130.

After a year, I am a 19 handicap, semi-consistent in shooting under 90 (last 4/5 rounds) and altogether feel like I am making good progress. But I have this questions that I am dying to figure out…

Being that these irons are blades (or musclebacks maybe??), would I benefit greatly from getting a better, more forgiving set of clubs? I do like these clubs a lot, but I like getting better at golf more 🙂

Any advice/feedback is appreciated. While you’re at it, any center-link putter recommendations that ARE NOT crazy expensive would be amazing. Thanks.

I mean your in a small pickle in my opinion. You started with blades or a form of, if you’re making great progress with them, which it seems like you are, switching may be counter productive. However, cavity backs would be a lot more forgiving and more recommended for a beginner.

One thing I emphasize on here is golf is your game and it is supposed to be fun. So if those clubs are making you have a good time, stick with it, if you feel a change will would be better, go for it

Those clubs are 30 years old. Literally anything you can find will be more forgiving.

It honestly depends on where you are losing strokes.

That being said, you’ll definitely get better average distance and dispersion if you just get some newer irons designed for mid handicaps.

Those are completely fine to play though and you’re not going to improve that much faster with better irons. Wedges on the other hand will make a decently big difference. Fresh grooves on wedges with a clean tp5 or something spins so nice around the greens.

You don’t need that to score well. It just gets the dopamine going.

  4. You sir are the perfect candidate for a fitting. Go forth and get fitted.
