Last week in Norman, the Sooners did a great job of punching one in down near the goal line by using an old school gap scheme where you pull the backside guard, built some double teams on the play side, create a running lane here, and give the back an option one-on-one here to run this dude over. But as you’ll see, things don’t always work out as planned. But the key block, however, is this tight end. Because the backside guard is pulling the kick out, you cannot have penetration in this situation here. So, this tight end has to come down across, get his face across this defensive end because he knows that these two are double teaming up to this backside backer. So, he’s got to come flat enough to be able to cut off penetration, but also move him down the field. Not an easy block to do, but look what happens. Here’s why it’s so important. Because as the back comes, he’s looking through the pulling backside guard on the defensive end. It looks a little gummed up and look w unblocked defender in the hole. So what he’s going to want to do is take his vision and come back and see if there’s something backside. But right now there’s no place to run in here. But because the tight end who’s right here keeps a strain on his guy because this wall starts to build right here. All you need is a little bit more of a wall to create yourself a running lane and voila, the tight end does a great job of straining and maintaining his block, creating or cutting off penetration, staying on track and not trying to turn the defender because there’s pressure on that defender. He can’t come off of that block, which allows the back to hit the hole, run through some terrible arm tackles, and score a touchdown. [Music] Aw, look at you. You made it all the way to the end. Grinding through like it’s play 18 and 9 on7. So pancake that subscribe, smash that like button, and pull around the corner to share this with your buddy. Trent’s life rolls best when the whole crews in the huddle.
