Stop wasting hours on the driving range doing outdated golf driver tips that don’t get you anywhere. In this video, Tyler Kuhn breaks down 4 easy, proven steps to maximize your driver swing so you can hit driver farther, straighter, and with more confidence off the tee.
Whether you struggle with slices, pulls, or inconsistent contact, this step-by-step lesson will show you exactly how to:
✅ Perfect your ball position for optimal launch and swing path
✅ Adjust your setup and tilt to deliver the driver squarely
✅ Use the correct turn, tilt, and extension in the backswing
✅ Create an inside-out path with a square clubface to hit more powerful draws
You’ll learn why tour pros like Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau, and Scottie Scheffler all move their weight forward while still launching the ball high—and why you don’t need to lean back to “hit up” with the driver. By the end, you’ll have a clear, repeatable system to build a driver swing that produces both distance and accuracy.
Plus, stick around until the end for a complimentary practice plan that takes the guesswork out of your range sessions so you know exactly what drills to do to get better faster.
If you’re serious about maximizing your driver, lowering your scores, and finally hitting more fairways, this video is for you.

Let’s get to pounding some drivers. Okay, when it comes to ball position, we want the ball position to be more in line with the lead shoulder straight down. The reason being is this will definitely affect your swing path. When we get the golf ball too far forward, the shoulders generally open and anytime I’m making contact with the ball on the way up on a forward position, that swing path is going to work more to the left and promote more of a fade bias. If I play the ball slightly back of that, and we see tour pros do this on TV all the time, they’re going to swing a little bit more down, but consequently, they’re also going to swing slightly more to the right, and they’re going to have a tendency to swing more inside out. If I play the ball right off my lead shoulder, that’s going to be the point in time where my driver is traveling the straightest. So, even if my irons read four to five degrees inside out, my driver, even when I swing inside out a lot, is usually right around 0 to 1 to two. If you see some path measurements that are just a little bit out to in, like half to a degree and a half, and the ball is still flying pretty straight, not curving a whole lot, that’s okay. I just don’t want that path to read more than about one one and a half degrees out to in for somebody who’s hitting a driver really solid and very straight. So, when we make our setup, couple other adjustments we need to make. If this is my normal setup with an iron, my handle’s forward, the club heads in the middle, my weight’s forward, this stays the same, but when I move the club behind the ball, I actually have to tilt my shoulders a little bit, which allows me to get the shaft very straight up and down. If I set up with my shaft like this with a driver, I’m taking nine degrees and turning it into three. If I push the handle forward, I have to let the face open to the right to keep the loft of the club up so that I can hit the ball high enough to actually maximize its carry. When I want to hit a draw, I usually have the ball slightly back of neutral, the face slightly open, and I swing very level. This ball usually launches between 12 and 13°, spins at 21 to 2200 RPMs, and usually still carries 265 to 275 yards, depending on how fast I’m swinging that day. But for the most part, I would tell people to start with the ball on their shoulder. The club and your left arm are in a straight line. your hips are kicked forward and that creates a little bit more tilting to the right. What that does is it keeps your angle of attack from being down too much. So, I tilt to the right a little bit. I kick the hip more forward. From here, as I make my back swing and I turn, tilt, extend. You’re going to notice my left shoulder is going to work more down. My right shoulder is going to work more up and back. And my spine’s going to extend as I turn. When I do this, my chest is not over my right leg. Just because I’m tilted to the right doesn’t mean that I need to get over here. I can’t swing very fast doing that. And that will actually hurt your spine over time. I can’t make the club go very far back. I now have to bend my arms. Okay, I start separating my elbows. Now I’m shortening the radius. I’m creating a whole raft of problems. So when we set up with the driver, ball off the left shoulder, little bit of rightward tilt as my hips push forward. Turn, tilt, extend. Keep the face 45° to the ground in the takeaway. Ball starts right. Tiny draw. Path was 1.8 into out. Launched at 13° with 2,000 spin. Even though my hips, my weight were left, I still launched it in a very optimal position to hit my tiny draw and maximize my distance. It’s a pure myth that in order to hit the driver well, you have to shift to the right. The best players in the game don’t hold their weight back and swing up a ton. Bryson might hit up a ton, his weight’s still moving forward. Rory hits up a lot. His weight’s still moving forward. Scotty Sheffller swings very level. His weight’s moving forward a lot. Charles Howell, one of the most accurate and longest guys I’ve ever actually seen hit a golf ball. The last players championship he played in, he was number one in strokes gained off the tee, he hit every T-shot 290 to 310 and hit them all right down the middle. His angle of attack is very close to zero. You do not have to shift to the right to swing up. The more up we swing, the more left we’re swinging on an arc and the more you’re going to either hit a smother pull hook with a shut face or you’re going to hit more pull slices and you’re going to struggle hitting your driver far. So, these are just a couple things I want you to work on with your driver. Turn your body more in the back swing. Keep the face 45 degrees down in the takeaway pointed more away from the target to help you hit more of a draw. Once we start swinging inside out with a closed club face to the path, you’re going to see the ball start drawing more. If you can get your swing path more inside out and keep your club face more closed to your swing path, you’re going to hit more draws. But remember, in order to maximize your driver, help you hit it farther, and hit more fairways, put the ball off your lead shoulder, feel like your weight’s moving left, and you’re swinging more level through the ball. Don’t use the tea height and leaning back to swing up to try and hit it further and higher. All that’s going to do is make you hit it lower on the club face, and it’s going to rob you of a lot of distance because that ball won’t fly high enough. Would you combine this back swing portion with the 3 step back swing from a previous video?
Is that still a good feel to have at the top?

Great video! Need one showing speed progression!
fantastic, thank you
Very good video. My instructor always advocates hands forward at setup to keep the draw built in. This has always worked great with the irons but I fight hitting the ball too low and over draws with the driver. My takeaway from this video is I should experiment with keeping the clubhead more in line with my hands and perhaps add more tilt. I am working on my ball position too. Would you agree?
