Rule number 14 covers one of the most common and most misunderstood parts of golf. How to properly drop, place, or replace your golf ball during a round. Hey golfers, John here with You Think You Know the Rules presented by our friends at Tea Time Golf Pass. Now, let’s start with dropping. You now must drop from knee height with your arm straight down and the ball has to land and stay within the relief area no closer to the hole. If it rolls out of the relief area or into a penalty zone, you drop again. If it does happen twice, you can place the ball where it first touched the ground on that second drop. Now, replacing, you’ve got to put the ball back on the exact spot it was lifted or moved from. If you can’t remember where it was from, you estimate, but you must be reasonable. Wrong ball, wrong spot, or improper drop, that’s usually a one-stroke penalty. And in some cases, you may have to replay the shot or risk being disqualified. And then here’s a weird one. If you drop correctly, but your ball hits your foot or equipment before it lands, that drop does not count. You do need to redo it, but there’s no penalty if you follow through with this correctly. So remember, drop from knee height within the relief area and follow the right process when putting a ball back into play. So know the rules and respect the game.
