Many golfers struggle with inconsistency because their downswing gets too steep, forcing their body to “stand up” through impact.
In this video, PGA coach Kerrod Gray and @coachcarolin break down why early extension happens and why shallowing the club can help you stay in posture for more solid, consistent ball-striking.

Perfect. All right. So, what I’m doing there, Caroline, is giving you the feel of the club shaft shallowing. Now, it was just a little dry drill, a little rehearsal to give and build some awareness, but we often see a bit of a chain reaction throughout the golf swing between players getting the shaft too steep and then standing up. So, I want you to talk about that. Yeah, absolutely. So that’s what we call the, you know, detrimental early extension move where you feel like and you can see that hip that is, you know, the right hip especially kind of coming forward and losing that spine angle and standing up on the ball. And so many players say, “Oh, I stood up on this one.” But I do want to say that the standing up part is actually trying to help you hit the ball better. It’s trying to help you, but it obviously isn’t really helping us in the long run. Let’s explain that bit. So set up to the ground, and I want you to make a steep down swing, but don’t stand up. So, we’re going to go this way now. Swing down. That’s exactly what’s going to happen. So, your body works overtime, does all these little micro calculations, and says, “Well, we don’t want that to happen. I still want to hit the golf ball. The target’s over there.” It in that split second stands up just enough so you can strike the golf ball. But the more excessive movements you have like that in the golf swing, the more challenging it is. Absolutely. And so, I’d like you to focus on the first foot in your down swing. So when you look at your own video, I want you to look at the top of your back swing and then I want you to pay attention to your shaft and I want you to look whether that shaft is actually when it’s coming down, is it getting, you know, perpendicular to the ground, is it actually pointing into the ground or is it actually starting to get more parallel to the ground? If it gets more parallel to the ground, we’re shallowing. If it gets more perpendicular at this way, then so let’s say I’m here and I’m actually doing it the wrong way and it gets really steep is what we call this. Now, the only way for me to shallow it is to do what? Watch my body. If I just stand up, I just shallow the club. And that’s exactly what our body tries to do to save our lives to hit the ball versus the ground. A quick heads up. If you want a free swing review, well, I’m currently giving away personalized feedback to every single golfer inside my online community. And I can’t wait to help you improve your game. Absolutely. Now, there are a multitude of reasons of why you could be standing up. And the very first thing to check is your grip and your club face. Because if the club face is open, standing up actually helps you stall out your rotation and square it. So, we’ve just check the movement of the club head at the top of the swing. And there’s a few things that we can get players to do that would help work on this. Uh the very first was the one where I was holding a golf club and just guiding Carolyn shaft as she was making her down swing. The second one, Carol, if you hold two golf clubs together like this and just make a slow swing in one motion, you’ll feel that the weight of the club head is now significantly more than what it was before. And as a result of that, you’ll probably feel that the head will naturally start to shallow a little bit more. Yeah, absolutely. It’s going to be very hard to move it in this direction. Uh the second one is actually by taking your front hand off the golf club. Uh and as you make it back swing, you can grip down the golf club a little bit more. Uh make sure you get a lot of turn, but then simply just swing through with one hand. And this is the same sort of effect because we’re taking our two hands off the golf club and we can’t force and manipulate and control it. Well, the golf club head due to its weight is naturally going to start to shallow a little bit more. And as the golf shaft starts to move down, well, now it’s actually in a position which is going to help us maintain our posture through impact rather than cause us to stand up, which is absolutely what we don’t want to do. Is there anything you would add to that? Any drill that you love doing that you work with with your players to stop the golf club from getting too steep? Yeah, absolutely. And actually starts at the takeaway. So this is kind of a, you know, maybe curious because we’re talking about the start of the down swing, but in order to start a down swing correctly, the chain reaction doesn’t just start here. The chain reaction starts here. So when you when you are a player, and this is I would say 90% of people that early extend is players that actually struggle with their takeaway and get very deep in the back swing because when you’re deep in the back swing, if you now try to actually swing down to the ground, you’re in your own way, right? So now your body again wants to help you. So it’s first first order of business is to get those hands and that shaft forward and in front of your body again so you have a shot at catching the ball. So when you’re forcing your body to do that, you’re going to be, you know, likely steep too early extending. So I love to actually look at the takeaway and make sure that we have the club hand outside our hands when we go away because this is going to really see how my club head is now outside my hands. You’ll also, if you look at tour players, this is where they have between 8 and 9:00. 9:00 it’ll start matching up a little bit with our hands, but right before it should be outside. It should never be this. And if you exaggerate that as much as you can. So take the golf club back and almost feel like as you take it back for me, you’re going to keep it way outside, way outside, you naturally at the top of your swing to create any power are going to want to feel that you reroute it. And you can really see this with baseball players. If you focus on the end of a baseball bat as they’re standing up straight, so they don’t have the front bend component that golf has, but let’s say they pull the baseball bat back, as they then start to transition and move into impact, it is going to shallow out. Now, we translate that movement here into a golf swing. You can see the head is way outside the hands. And then, let’s say they’re swinging through to create power. Bend down into the golf swing. Well, now the head is behind me. So even baseball can be a great drill in itself to help players build that awareness of that swing. Yeah, absolutely. Check your takeaway. Make sure you do this little drill. You can do the the one piece takeaway drill because that’ll always keep that head outside right here. And then you just set yourself up for less chain reactions, less poor chain reactions. Thanks for watching this video. YouTube thinks that you would benefit from watching this one next.
