I have been working on my game over the last few years. It is clear that my gapping between my 3hy, 4i, and 5i are too close. Because of this, I am thinking about dropping the 4i, and going with something between my 3w and 3hy. Any advice?

I've never owned a 5w or 7w, and really would be willing to put a club somewhere else in the bag if someone has other ideas.

Regardless, thank everyone for any answers.

Hit it harder. Bigger gaps then.

I’m more impressed how far you hit your 9 iron and how short your driver is going lol.

If you have access to a sim check your angle of attack between 5i to 3w. Hitting too down on longer clubs too low of launch = less carry

That’s not uncommon. Drop the 4I, find out why you have a 20 yard gap between your 9I and PW.

How many shots do you have with your clubs

Imo there’s far more use for a well used 5w than an underused 3i. Personally, I carry D,3,5,7w and a 4h to remove my long irons and I carry 5-9i.

I’m also a consistency first guy. So my reaches are relatively short, so I reach for longer, easier to hit clubs on the fairway over the irons.

Given that your gaps are only 8-9 yards between clubs, I think you’re fine if you just step on the hybrid a bit more. I used to use arccos and 5 yards was kind of statistically unimportant.

Where I think you do have a big problem is your scoring section of the bag. There’s a 20 yard gap between 9 and Pw, and Pw and Gw. That’s way too big if all your other clubs are only 8-9.

If you’re serious about consistency before distance, which I believe based on how consistent your bag is, I’d look at stuffing another wedge in the bag between your Pw and Gw.

You’re not going to feel the loss of your 4 iron very much, but there’s plenty of greens out there with trouble in front and back that are less than 20yards long.

Yes get rid of the 4i. But the gap between your 3w and 3h is so small, unsure another club in between would help. I’d actually look at adding another wedge instead. 20 yard gaps between your 9i, PW, and GW is huge, especially bc those club are attacking the green. So I’d consider another wedge before getting another hybrid or wood.

Do you find 4 iron, 3 hy and 3 w aren’t getting enough height? My distance numbers with irons very similar to yours. My driver goes about 280 but I see your comments that your course limits you there. I went for a fairway woods fitting and found I hit 5w further than 3w, about 250. I couldn’t get 3hy up in the air, but 7w was going 225 pretty comfortably. I only had the funds for 1 club so I ordered the 5w. My plan next season is to ditch 3 and 4 iron in favor of a 7 w and either 9w or 4hy. The long irons are just so tough to get enough elevation on to not be reliant on lucky hard bounces and rollout.

You’ve got above average distances until your 4 iron. I’d definitely toss the 4i and try a 7 W. A lot of better players are carrying 7 wood cuz extra length plus versatility.

Also, not sure what’s going on with your driver, but someone hitting a 5 iron 190 should be hitting 250+. You know that you should be hitting topspin with your driver, right?
