I’m a couple months back into this game after about a 20 year break. Have been really struggling with consistent contact with my 3H and am considering adding a 5W and/or 7W either in place of or in addition to. Would a 5W or 7W fit the bill better? At this time, I’m not overly concerned with the gap between 3H and driver since I usually lay up on par 5’s anyway and tend to hit my driver straight-ish off the tee.

Probably a 4 hybrid and a 3-wood and figure out what’s going on with your driver.

Your 3hy and 5w would be usually around the same loft so if the question is which one to replace the 3hy it would be 5w. If you wanna go the route of ditching the 3hy and adding both I’d suggest a 4w and 7w gapping will be a lot better in my opinion.

  3. If you can try them at a golf sim you’ll get your answer based on gapping. Assuming your hybrid has an adjustable loft, you could always try tweaking it a degree to give you nice spacing between clubs.

What loft is your 5 iron? I would find that out, then add maybe 2 woods and a hybrid to gap it accordingly (getting rid of the 3 hybrid if you can’t hit it well). For example, if your 5 iron is around 27 degrees, then you could get a 5 hybrid (24), 7 wood (21), and 5 wood (18). This would fill in that 175 – 205 range nicely.

I did basically the same thing this year. Went from Dr/3W/3Hybrid/4 iron/5 iron to: Dr/3W/5W/4Hybrid/6iron (my irons are extremely strong lofted).

No joke, the 5 wood is stupid straight. Feels like cheating compared to the hybrids. I want to swap the 4 hybrid for a 7 wood too, but don’t want to spend more money yet lol.

  5. Im just confused your 3hybrid and driver only have a 30yd gap. My 4 hybrid is my 220 club my 3 wood is my 250 club and my driver is about 290 something doesn’t seem right with your gapping.

You have big gaps between your driver and 3H. Another between 3H and 5i. Fill those gaps with the appropriate club.

I’d say if you’re wanting to add anything l, you want something between your 3hy and driver and something between 5iron and 3hy.. if your better with hybrids I’d say get 2h , and a 4 or 5 hybrid… if you wanting to replace the hybrid for woods, I’d say get a 4 wood and a 7 wood.. a 5 wood is more of a replacement for a 3 hybrid..

    I’d look at a 4H or 7W 1st and then a 5w.

I went for a fitting for fairway woods and I found I hit 5w and 3w basically the same distance so I ordered a 5w. The 7w and 4h were super close. Fitter convinced me to wait until I settle on irons as I’m in similar boat as you (I hadn’t swung a club for about 18 yrs) and my irons due for an upgrade.

    This one is easy.

    1. 5w for sure (90% of people hit 5wood better than 3wood). You might need to change adapter settings a bit and deloft the face 1-2° to make the cap between 3h and 5w a bit larger, or buy high launching 3wood and add loft. Most people tune their fairway woods closer to 4w (which are hard to find).
    2. 7w is replacement for 3h, and since your 3h numbers are so good keep it as it is.
    3. Get 4h to make the gap between 3h and 5i smaller. (This is more important than getting 5w).

You should gain easily 10-20yd more yards for your driver with your current swing speed, so you should do few lessons for it and maybe go fit a new driver if your coach recommends it. Lessons are way cheaper than new clubs and actually improve your game.
