HAM LAKE, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men’s golf team had three individuals finish in the top 10 as part of a third-place team finish at the season-opening Augsburg Fall Invite on Saturday and Sunday at Majestic Oaks Golf Club.
Sophomore Ryan Herbst, junior Quinn Nevell, and senior Isaac Schmidt were all in the top 10 for St. Olaf, which was third in the nine-team field with a two-day 609 (+33). The Oles were in second place after Saturday’s opening round (300, +12) before dipping one spot with a 309 (+21) on Sunday.
As a team, St. Olaf led the field in par-three scoring (+6, 3.15) and pars (116) over the 36-hole event, while ranking tied for second in par-five scoring (+9, 5.22).
Herbst and Schmidt were part of a three-way tie for fifth overall with identical scores of 146 (+2). Herbst shot an even-par 72 on Saturday to sit in a tie for third before a second-round 74 (+2) and led the field in par-three scoring for the weekend (-2, 2.75).
Schmidt moved up three spots into a tie for fifth with an even-par 72 on Sunday after a 74 (+2) to begin the tournament for the second top-five finish of his career. The senior was tied for second in the 65-golfer field in par-five scoring (-1, 4.88) and led the field with 28 pars out of the 36 holes.
Competing as an individual, Nevell recorded the third top-10 performance of his career by placing eighth (147, +3) thanks, in part, to tying for second in the field in par-five scoring (-1, 4.88) and tying for fifth with six birdies on the weekend. The junior’s even-par 72 on Sunday was the lowest round of his collegiate career.
In his first tournament as an Ole, junior Jacob Brown was in the top 10 after the first round on Saturday (74, +2) before a second-round 81 (+9) put him in a tie for 20th overall (155, +11). Also competing as an individual, first year Adam Drabek rose seven spots on Sunday to tie for 33rd (159, +15).
St. Olaf will return to action at the Minnesota Golf Classic on Saturday and Sunday, Sept 6-7 at Pioneer Creek Golf Course in Independence.
