Tigers stunning shot out the bunker in 2000

You’re going to watch the best shot of Tiger Wood’s career. I mean, how many people do that? You know, understandably, Tiger hits it bad. That needs to turn down just a little bit. How will he approach this shot? 213 yds from a fairway bunker. Carry over water to a back pin. By far, I think it’s one of the greatest shots I’ve ever seen. About as good a five iron as I can. About 25 ft left of the hole. So, as I was standing to the left of him, watching him getting ready to play, I looked at my caddy and I said, “Well, I’ve done my job. Let’s see what he can do.” I took a good look at it. He’s got a perfect line. He’s going right. Oh, absolutely. You know, he’s got 213 yds. Going to have a little visual obstruction with the tree right there. You know, I don’t think he can get a good look at the pin, but he’s got to play towards the center. I saw him take a deep breath. That’s unusual. Boy, that’s amazing. Boy, this is some guts right here. Uh-oh. That looked like it might have went right. This is right online. [Applause]

In the year 2000, Tiger Woods was at the peak of his dominance, showcasing incredible skill in every facet of the game—including escaping bunkers. One iconic moment came during The Open Championship at St Andrews, where Tiger displayed masterful control from the sand. His bunker play that season was nearly flawless, combining power, precision, and creativity. With a smooth swing and sharp focus, he consistently saved par or better, turning potential bogeys into momentum-saving moments. His ability to read lies, control trajectory, and spin the ball set him apart. In 2000, even the bunker couldn’t stop Tiger Woods from making history.
