You won’t see L.A.B. Golf calling any of its putters “zero torque” anymore.

The company just launched the new OZ.1i HS putter, its first heel-shafted design, and at a media launch event for the release, L.A.B. CEO Sam Hahn told GOLF’s Jake Morrow that the company would be moving away from the “zero torque” nomenclature.

“The words ‘zero torque’ are nowhere on the L.A.B. website anymore,” Morrow pointed out on this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped podcast. “And the reason for that is if you take the L.A.B., it’s going to balance toe up. A true zero torque putter, if you put it anywhere, would stay where you leave it. But this will still roll and balance to toe up. And Sam said that means that there is still some level of torque. So all we’re doing is taking as much torque as we can out of it.”

That’s a significant departure as L.A.B. essentially created the zero torque putter category when it launched in 2018 with the DF 2.1.

L.A.B. Golf’s new OZ.1i HS putter — What you missed

But the release of the OZ.1i HS also shows that L.A.B. is willing to release new products to cater to its customers’ wishes.

At the launch event, Morrow also said L.A.B. leadership acknowledged they may have gone a little too far into their marketing around the revealer. The revealer is a tool that shows whether a putter is balanced to the point where the face will stay square through the stroke. The idea was that only zero torque putters could achieve this.

However, players don’t hit putts with a revealer; they hit them with their hands.

“One of their main goals from a research and development standpoint, and they said this to us, is they acknowledge the idea that your hands are on the putter when you’re making a stroke,” Morrow said. “And they’re doing a lot of things that I can’t talk about publicly to research how to improve their designs based on the fact that it’s not in a reviewer when you’re putting. They acknowledge that, they know it, they understand it.”
