Over two hundred people took part in a golf tournament organised by St. Killian’s GAC Whitecross on Saturday (August 23).

The event took place at the Ashfield Golf Course in Cullyhanna and was organised in memory of the much-loved Whitecross brothers Jim and Barry Malone, both of whom were golf enthusiasts.

Jim and Barry were lifelong supporters of St. Killian’s and played an important role at the heart of the club and the Whitecross community throughout their lives.

Club Chairman Kieran Shields thanked everyone who got behind the event and paid tribute to the legacy that the Malone brothers have left to the club and village, referencing their work in supporting young people through the GAA and providing employment and involvement with Whitecross Community Association.

The club’s first golf day took place in 2013 in memory of Barry who tragically passed away in 2012 after being struck by machinery on a building site where he was working.

The golf day ran annually until 2022, when it was cancelled due to the covid pandemic.

In March of this year Jim’s brother Barry also passed away and a decision was made by St. Killian’s to relaunch the club’s annual golf day as the inaugural Jim and Barry Malone Golf Classic.

Speaking at the launch of the tournament in July, Mr. Shields stated, “This is an exciting time for St Killian’s. With now 653 members and 18 active teams, thriving underage, girls and ladies structures and our men’s team newly promoted this year.

“We have recently secured a second field and look forward to developing ambitious plans to improve our facilities.”

Both seasoned and less experienced golfers took part in Saturday’s tournament, with a range of prizes given out throughout the day.

The main sponsors of the event were Walltech Drylining and Plastering and Corlatt Construction services Ltd. Ronan O’Hare, Lorcan Mussen, Paul Crilly, and Eamon Coulter grabbed the top prizes winning range finders, engraved whiskey glasses, as well as the Jim and Barry Malone Golf Classic Cup.

Special prizes were also handed out to Paul Loughran and Brenda Cranney who won the male and female award for driving the ball the longest.

All those who took part were treated to a barbecue on the 9th hole. And, following the event, O’Hanlon’s Bar in Whitecross hosted the golfers who partied the night away to the music of local group ‘Still Tuning’.
