They said the burglary happened at the Longshore Golf Club on Compo Road South on Sept. 7, 2024 around 6:30 a.m.

“It was reported by staff that earlier that same morning, someone had forced entry into the business by breaking a side door,” Westport police said in their report.

A number of golf clubs and golf bags were reported to have been stolen by the suspect with an estimated total value of about $12,498.70, police said.

“Through investigation, Matthew Berman was developed as a possible suspect after he was arrested by New York authorities for similar golf pro shop burglaries that had been committed within their state,” police said. “Evidence was subsequently developed by the investigating Westport detective reportedly linking Berman to the Longshore incident.”

Police said an arrest warrant was granted.

On Aug. 21, 2025, Berman turned himself in at Westport police headquarters.

Berman was unable to post his $100,000 bond and was transported to Stamford Superior Court for arraignment the same morning.
