Westport police have arrested a New York man who is suspected of stealing golf clubs worth thousands of dollars from a golf club in Westport and they said he is suspected of similar thefts in Norwalk and in New York as well.

Officers responded to the Longshore Golf Club on Compo Road South in Westport just after 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7 to investigate a burglary at the pro shop and staff members told them that someone had forced their way in earlier in the morning and stole around $12,498.70 worth of golf clubs and golf bags.

Westport police said they identified a 41-year-old Bronx, New York man as a possible suspect after he was arrested by authorities in New York, where he was suspected in similar golf pro shop burglaries as well.

Local authorities obtained a warrant charging the man with burglary in the third degree, criminal mischief in the second degree and larceny in the second degree and he turned himself in on Thursday, Aug. 21.

Westport police said the man they arrested is the same man who Norwalk police arrested in connection with a burglary at Golf Galaxy on Feb. 17, where around $23,000 worth of golf clubs had been stolen.

Norwalk police said the suspect was connected to a series of commercial burglaries targeting golf equipment retailers across the New York area, resulting in the theft of thousands of dollars of high-end merchandise.

The suspect is due in court on Oct. 6 in connection with the charges from the burglaries in Norwalk and Westport.
