If ever there was a sign that summer is coming to an end and winter is approaching in the rearview mirror it’s the First Stage of DP World Tour Q-School as a catalogue of Irish professionals and elite amateurs take their steps on the long and winding road towards the DP World Tour.

Many will get knocked off course along the way but Hugh Foley has made a promising start to his First Stage at the Players Club in England.

The Royal Dublin golfer is Ireland’s only participant this month and is level-par after an opening 70.

Foley shares sixth place after mixing three birdies and as many bogeys with the top-17 and ties advancing to Spain’s Second Stage in October.

The 28-year-old has enjoyed a decent season on the Alps Tour in his maiden year as a touring professional.

Simon Bryan and Paul Conroy will get their bids to reach the top underway next week in Huddersfield.
