ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Despite having three new players and a first-year head coach, St. Clairsville continued to dominate the Buckeye 8 Conference Golf Tournament.
Tuesday at sun-soaked Belmont Hills Country Club, the Red Devils trailed Beaver Local by one shot (314-315) entering the second round, but carded a four-player round of 311 for a two-day total of 626 and their sixth consecutive conference championship. The first round was played at the Cadiz Country Club earlier in the season.
“Coach (Ryan) Clifford handed over a nice set of kids for me,” St. Clairsville head coach Heidi Mooney said. “The three new players all played on our reserve team last year and did quite well. Everything came together today for us.
“These boys, and Olivia, have spent tons of hours over the summer playing golf,” Mooney added. “If you wanted to find them you had to look at the golf course. That equates to a victory and makes coaching really easy.”
While St. Clairsville had three players earn all-conference, Barnesville’s Brady Gallagher was running away with the individual crown. The senior carded a 73 Tuesday after firing the low round of the event, a 70 at Cadiz, on the first day for a two-round total of 143. That score was four shots better than St. Clairsville’s Mavrik Malin (74-73 147).
“It’s a pretty nice feeling. I worked pretty hard this summer to get where I am at,” Gallagher said. “I had a rough start to the day, but thankfully I was able to shoot a really good score on the back (nine).
“I have to give it to Mavrik,” Gallagher said. “He really played tough today, but I’m proud of myself for what I accomplished.”
Joining Malin on the winning team were Beau Mooney (78-78 156) and Mason Conway (81-78 159). Also scoring for the Red Devils was Olivia Baker (85-82 167). The fifth team member was Ryan Mooney (82-87 169).
In addition to Brady Gallagher, Malin, Beau Mooney and Conway, also making the six-member all-conference team were Buckeye Local’s Kamden Kinyo (73-83 156) and Barnesville’s Hayden Treadway (80-79 159).
Making second team all-Buckeye 8 were Beaver Local’s Owen Hill (77-83 160); Barnesville’s Dylan Gallagher (84-79 163); Brooke’s Colton Yensen (84-81 165); Brooke’s Parker McMon (83-81 165); Martins Ferry’s Nolan Zambori (81-85 166); Harrison Central’s Cash Meadows (85-82 167); St. Clairsville’s Olivia Baker (85-82 167) and Martins Ferry’s Hunter Shutler (79-88 167).
In the team race, Barnesville (328-320 648) finished a distant second, while Beaver Local (314-353 667) was third; Brooke (335-336 671) fourth and Martins Ferry (330-346 676).
