LAWRENCE, Kan. – Longwood women’s golf wrapped up its opening tournament of the season with a top five finish at the Jayhawk Invitational on Monday afternoon.
Avery Nordman finished in the top 12, and the Lancers finished fifth as a team. The team’s top four golfers all finished in the top half of the field.
RESULTS:
The Lancers entered the day in fifth and held firm in the spot, finishing 15 strokes ahead of North Alabama in the 10-team field.
The team knocked off nine strokes from its second-round score and carded a 302-316-307—925 (+61) over the three-round tournament.
Nordman had one of three rounds at par or better on the day to lead the way. The freshman was outstanding in her collegiate debut, climbing up nine spots in the standings into a tie for 12th with her 72 in the final round.
She carded four birdies in the final round and had nine four the tournament en route to a 77-78-72—227 (+11).
Madison Lehr tied for 22nd with a 75-80-77—232 (+16), and she played some of her best golf in her final six holes, posting five pars in that stretch to close out her round. She had a pair of birdies on the day and seven for the weekend.
Chiara Wippert finished tied for 25th with a three-round score of 72-83-79—234 (+18). She carded six birdies on the weekend, including a pair in the final round.
Abigail Sheldon finished tied for 29th behind a three-round score of 78-79-79—236 (+20). She had a trio of birdies in the round.
Caroline Tragesser carded a 90-79-84—253 (+37) to finish in 49th in the 59-player field.
WHAT THEY SAID:
“We started on the hardest holes on the course, so it wasn’t as strong of a start as yesterday, but it still put us in a good position,” said Longwood Head Coach Megan Weaver. “The middle 14 holes or so we played really strong, right around par as a team. Hole 13 really hurt us yesterday, and we played it one under as a team today. That was a huge execution adjustment!”
“Avery had a fantastic round and a strong finish for her first collegiate tournament,” Weaver added. “Plus, carding a top five team finish at our first event is an awesome start to what I expect to be a great year!”
