Entering Sunday’s final round of the Tour Championship, Tommy Fleetwood had never won a tournament on the PGA Tour.

Exiting Sunday, Fleetwood not only captured the FedEx Cup trophy — he won $10 million.

Fleetwood shot 2 under par to finish 18 under at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, securing his first win in his 164th PGA Tour event. The Tour Championship was the final leg of golf’s FedEx Cup — a three-tournament, playoff-style competition that awards the PGA Tour’s championship trophy after a season-long competition.

In 2025, the FedEx Cup rules were changed so that the winner of the Tour Championship was crowned the FedEx Cup champ. That meant in addition to Fleetwood winning his first PGA Tour event, he took home the FedEx Cup trophy and $10 million in prize money.

“It’s easy for anybody to say that they are resilient, that they bounce back, that they have fight,” Fleetwood said Sunday. “It’s different when you actually have to prove it.”

Fleetwood had come close to winning many times before.

He had 30 top-five finishes (including six second-place finishes) in his career before Sunday, the most for any golfer without a win in the last 100 years, according to ESPN.

In 2024, Fleetwood finished tied for third at the Masters Tournament. He also placed second at the U.S. Open in 2018 as well as the Open Championship in 2019.

Fleetwood had three top-five finishes since June, including a second-place showing at the Travelers Championship.

“I never really felt like it wouldn’t happen,” Fleetwood said. “But there’s always doubt there.”

Fleetwood’s long-awaited win sparked an enthusiastic response both from his contemporaries as well as those around the sports world. Luminaries who shared their support on social media included Tiger Woods, LeBron James and Caitlin Clark.

There is still one more major trophy Fleetwood has to play for in 2025. Next month, he will be part of the European team at the Ryder Cup in New York.
