In this week’s episode of The Golf Podcast we’re diving into one of the hottest debates in professional golf: the controversy surrounding both LIV Golf’s and the PGA Tour’s playoff formats. Fans erupted after Jon Rahm claimed the $18 million LIV individual title without a single win all season, while Joaquín Niemann, who racked up five victories, was left empty-handed. We break down exactly how the points system allowed this to happen, why many feel it undervalues winning, and how Rahm himself admitted it doesn’t sit right with him. From there, we compare LIV’s struggles to the PGA Tour’s ongoing attempts to refine the FedEx Cup playoffs. Even after recent adjustments, Rory McIlroy and other players have voiced concerns about fairness, complexity, and fan engagement. We’ll highlight what worked, what didn’t, and some creative solutions being proposed—including blending stroke play and match play formats to create more drama and clarity for both fans and players. Along the way we’ll explore how consistency, hot streaks, and playoff timing impact who ultimately takes home golf’s biggest prizes. Finally, we’ll weigh in with our own ideas for fixing these “broken” playoff structures so the best players—and the most deserving seasons—are properly rewarded. Whether you’re fascinated by LIV’s rapid-fire evolution or the PGA Tour’s ongoing balancing act, this is a conversation you won’t want to miss.

Can’t listen to these monkeys talk and mispronouncing players names
The point system is fine, Individual champion suppose to be great all season.
Migel indurain won the Tour de france without a stage win
What's it matter? Rahm is easily the most consistent player on LIV and should be rewarded
No problem here
Great job Jon 👍
The most difficult thing in golf is to be consistent, you cannot win half the tournaments and don't play the other half and expect to win over someone who finished in the top 10 on every tournament. Go cry to the crying spot.
Jock-ween
Jon fully deserves it mate clearly LIV wants to put more importance on consistency and Jon was the most consistent🤷♂
That pronunciation is criminal.
FOOLS! run golf
They could try scoring similar to ten pin bowling. So if they win, the next or previous 2 x tournament scores could be added. If they finish in the top 5, then only the 1x previous (or next) tournament points to be added to the win points. Like strikes and spares. In the last tournament the winner could have double his average points added and the 2nd could have 1x the average points added. Something along those lines. Makes sense to me, but not sure if I explained it clearly. Just an idea anyway.
The DEI of sports where everyone wins except the ones watching.
Great comparison with the money you win at 1st place, compared to the points you get. I think that makes it obvious they think 1st should get the big prize, why not the same in points?
Match play would be fucking 🔥
Isn't the purpose (at least one purpose) to encourage consistency?
It’s called consistency. You can get second every weekend and win the championship. It’s awesome to reward consistency.

Of course there’s an issue with the point system. There’s no way a guy that wins five tournaments, should finish second to a guy at won none.
Match play is the answer
Scotty is first seat playing the last player
Roy in opposite bracket and plays second to last player………..
Match play
Not sure who’s watching LIV ,I have tried several times and it’s very chunky, there is no flow to it,then you have the dance music playing,it’s very inconsistent. I have even tried watching the highlights of the day and still can’t finish watching this condensed version. I can only imagine that going to a LIV event must be the big deal. I so enjoy watching the LIV players in the majors.I don’t believe LIV will be around to much longer.
I don't understand why players have a problem with the FedEx Cup Playoffs being match play… I mean, the Ryder Cup, one of the biggest events in golf, is match play. And every player from the USA or Europe would die to get on the team to play it. Match play is a part of golf, but there are hardly any match play events left. I think the only official PGA Tour event with match play at the moment is the Zurich Classic. I also think having more match play events would prepare players better for big events like the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup. And it would also be good for the captains to actually see who is a great match play player. But that's just my personal view, of course.
If nieman hadn't bombed out of some of the events he would have won, plain and simple
pga is just lame…
And we thought the PGA was broken! LIV is showing it is nothing more than WWE wrestling in a golf motif.
If you are Neiman, you have to be a little annoyed but he also has to be real with himself that those finishes in 30th need to be cleaned up
It doesn't matter how the play-off system is set-up (LIV or PGAT), people are going to bitch about it.
Even if there is a flaw all they have to do is tweak it. They’re always tweaking. This is why liv is already more engaging to watch than the tour. They’re redefining and refining it constantly.
If they changed the points for 2nd to 20 instead of 30, Rahm would have been around 30 points less . Definitely needs adjustment. And I do enjoy watching LIV. Funny how the many millions miraculously appeared on PGA with no new sponsors chipping in…….Phil was right and this shows it.
There is nothing to be fixed, Neimann played poorly when not winning, Rahm played consistently all year, the years best golfer by definition should be the most consistent. Rahm lost in play off in the final event, so tied 1st. Neimann was well paid for his wins, and knows the system before the season started.
