Wheeling, W. Va. – The Mountain East Conference (MEC) continued to roll out their Golf Preseason Poll on Friday. After releasing the Men’s Golf Preseason Poll earlier today, the conference released their Women’s Golf Preseason Poll, as voted on by the conference coaches. The Wheeling University Women’s Golf team took the #6 spot in this season’s poll as they begin a new era of Cardinal golf on the course.
The 2024 season saw the Cardinals hit the links with a veteran unit and, although they were small in numbers they had their share of successes. They kicked things off at the Golden Eagle Invitational, combining for a two-round score of 840 to kick-off the season. It was their only team score of the season, but the rest of the year was marked by individual successes. They would round out the regular season with a pair of regional tournaments at Ohio Dominican and Ashland University to prepare them for the 2024 MEC Women’s Golf Championship. The Cardinals sent three golfers to the event, with two of those three golfers advancing to day three. Both of those golfers would finish in the top 20 of the event, rounding out a strong fall season for the Women’s Golf program.
As they enter the 2025 season, the Cardinals will once again be relying on veteran leadership to take control of a young team. Leading the way will be 2025 Second Team All-MEC Women’s Golfer Ella Keffer. Keffer was the Cardinal’s top golfer at the 2025 MEC Golf Championships, earning the 15th spot overall. The other returning golfer for the Cardinals is Brielle Milhoan who was a key contributor for the Cardinals during her freshman season. Milhoan would be the Cardinal’s top golfer at the University of Charleston Invitational to start the year and will look to improve on her success this season. New Head Women’s Golf Coach Thadd Obecny is looking to continue to build on the roster as the Cardinals try to compete for an MEC Women’s Golf title.
The 2025 season will kick off on the Cardinals home course for the first time in over five years. The Wheeling Invitational will be hosted at Belmont Hills Country Club as the Cardinals get their first look at their conference competition. They follow that up with a trip to the Golden Eagle Invitational where they will continue their run through the conference schedule. Each of their regular season tournaments will come against conference opponents as they head to the Concord/Glenville State Invitational on September 15th, followed by the Fairmont State Invitational on September 22nd. The full MEC regular season schedule will help prepare them for the 2025 MEC Women’s Golf Championships, running October 6th through October 8th.
Leading the way in the 2025 MEC Women’s Golf Preseason Poll was Glenville State, who finished with five first place votes and 54 total points. Sitting behind them in the University of Charleston, with two first place votes and 51 total points, while Fairmont State rounded out the top three with one first place vote and 44 total points.
