In this golf lesson, Eric Cogorno reveals the secret to how to hit a driver farther with better consistency – using your left shoulder in the golf swing to create backswing width. Eric Cogorno demonstrates how elite PGA Tour Pros like Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, and Tiger Woods use their lead shoulder to transport the club back, creating the width and power needed for maximum driver distance. Through detailed analysis and practical golf drills, you’ll master this fundamental movement that transforms narrow, all-arms swings into powerful, consistent drives.

  1. Question about initiation of downswing for me is about dominance of my trail arm. I feel that in process of "push" away from body my dominant arm forces shaft to cast earlier which then inherently forces me to early extend. How would you mitigate trail arm effect on grip and shaft path as simply as possible. I feel like it is unconscious move, that tension at top of the swing into the grip.

  2. if I may, serious issue here. 1) yes, lead shoulder sets up higher, but what needs to be said is that this shortens the trail side length, so the key is to use this. Put pressure down the right side into the grip which then
    a) provides width for the back swing and b) keeps the lead arm straight for maximum radius. So the key is NOT to rely on the Lead side all on its own. It needs to be supported by "extensor action" from the trail side.
    2) The lead shoulder is both a power accumulator and pressure point that you develop thrust against in the downswing. Vijay practiced often with a golf glove under his lead shoulder to maintain this pressure point.
Many swing thoughts are expressed here, and another good one is to feel that there is the sense of a "flat as possible" shoulder turn on the takeaway. As always, no lesson is complete without comment about support from the pivot for the whole swing. hold a club to your chest and it weighs only ounces, but the club (plus the weight of your arms) weigh more than a pound when in your stance, so this weight needs to be supported by the pivot . Pivot control in sync to prevent any disarticulation from the arms, so they always follow body rotation, rather than get ahead of it, to encourage a more reliable, repeatable motion. Your eye will be on the ball, but your mind will be in your hands. You don't move your hands, they are being moved by the pivot.

  3. I'm the under plane player who fights hooks and pushes and thin iron shots. I consistently feel like i am lunging from the inside back to the ball. When I don't do this I hit pretty solid drivers, but the miss hits are consistently as above. Really enjoy your instruction and am always excited to get to the range looking to try your advice! Thanks again!🫵

  4. Great video Eric!! The timing of this video is impeccable!! I have been struggling with my driver this year. Can’t wait to try this out!!

  5. Eric, you are my favorite YouTube instructor for explaining body feel because you give multiple descriptions. That said, part of what is also necessary for correcting a steeper swing is body sequence. If I don't get my lead hip moving towards the target, and up, before the downswing starts my shoulders can't tilt enough to shallow the driver.

  6. I think I have decent tilts and ball position etc at address and half decent width on way back ( saw one of your old videos Eric 😁) but I have trouble getting the club shallowed on downswing. Don’t slice, but some poor contact, but think I am a bit wooden and grip a bit tight. Good feelings to take to range here though, thanks Eric 👍

  7. If I have trouble connecting to the lead shoulder feel does the same complete turn occur if I can connect w my rear shoulder pulling back?

  8. As someone who's absolutely terrible with driver I can't wait to get out and try this! Thanks Eric 👍
