TIL about Larry Nelson. Didn’t play at all until he was 21, went pro at 24, and won multiple majors and tournaments. He broke 100 on his first round and broke 70 within 9 months of playing!

So what you’re saying is Larry Nelson is the OG golf redditor?

This is why I laugh when people say “I just have a natural talent” on breaking 100 their first time out or saying theyre breaking 80 3 months in…this guy did it and became one of the best golfers of all time. But here on reddit, its another Wednesday.

And yet there’s haters on these forums who’ll say if your kid isn’t a top ranked junior golfer by 15yo they stand no chance (like those who loved to say Charlie Woods wasn’t even a future D1 talent). It’s like every sport, some kids are late bloomers & with golf especially where it’s a mental fortitude game, a lot of players aren’t ready to score well until they’re in their late teens or early 20s.
Larry was obviously in a mature enough mental state that he could pickup the game rapidly & thrive.

He’s no Maurice Flitcroft

Breaking 70 in 9 months is absolutely absurd

Probably played hockey or baseball

I’m guessing he developed some physical skills by playing those other sports. If you’re a top athlete you should try all the sports.

Larry Nelson’s story is great. Y.E Yang aka ‘The Tiger Slayer’ also has a pretty amazing story, South Korean player who started golfing at age 19. He won the 2009 PGA Championship. He was 2 strokes back of Tiger Woods going into the final round and ended up winning by 3 strokes ( Yang -8, Woods -5).

There’s a ton of people who are really good at golf and don’t know they’re really good at golf.

I want to hear about the guy who didn’t break 100 for 2 years and finally everything clicked and he went pro.

Eat shit Larry.

Now do 40s.

I break 100 and 70 all the time. Oh, on 18 holes, not 9. 😉
SeeYouOn16
Greg Norman had a similar story. I could be a bit off but I believe he picked up a club at 18 and was scratch inside of a year and went pro not too many years after that. Some people just understand swing mechanics and are athletic enough to apply it.

I’m three years in and can’t break 100 when playing by the rules. I’m starting to get scared and nervous I’m not gonna go pro in golf

Larry is an awesome guy too. Have had the chance to play with him and talk to him for a while, nothing but positive things to say about him

He is the EXTREME exception, but there are others that didn’t play until later in life and became greats. Greg Norman didn’t play until he was 16 or 17 and was scratch within a year. Y.E. Yang didn’t start until he was 19 after an injury ended his dreams of being a body builder. An old example would be Walter Travis, who didn’t start playing until he was 35, went on to win 3 US Am’s and a British Am, he is generally considered to be the first GREAT American player (although he was born in Australia lol)

Knew a dude like this in HS. His locker was right next to me. Let’s call him “Drew”.
He was the star of our state winning soccer team but before high school but he took up other sports for “fun”.
The summer before HS starts the asshole decides to take up tennis. I’d been playing tennis for a few years and this douche bag played it for a few months the summer before school started, didn’t pick up a racket until tryouts the following February and proceeds to makes JV (we had Freshmen, JV and Varsity tennis). Halfway through the season he’s playing so well they move him up to varsity as a freshmen and he keeps winning.
I played golf through all of HS and we had electives in gym for our junior and senior year. Senior year in spring I decide to take golf cause it will be easy. Drew is in the elective, played golf a handful of times before, and after the first week of practicing around he’s absolutely killing stuff.
The last week of gym we get to play our local muni for 18 and Drew comes in with an 88 from the blues. With barely ever playing. It was also verified by the people he played with.
Oh, and he’s the nicest dude ever and super good-looking and also was on the honor roll and smoked a bunch of weed all the time. He wouldn’t study for tests, barely did homework, long-term assignments were always started the night before they were due an this guy just aced everything.
I’m pretty sure Drew was just genetically engineered to be a winner. Fuck you Drew… not really cause you’re super nice and I hope you’re doing well. But fuck you for being naturally good at almost everything without having to try.

All the late bloomers being mentioned, let’s not forget 🇹🇭 Jaidee. Paratrooper turned pro golfer , makes you wonder if he started younger with proper backing/instruction, what he could have achieved

Fuck Larry
Shooting in the 90s in your first round , with old school clubs, is so impressive. No wonder he stuck with it.
wow fuck that guy
He could almost be the leader of North Korea
3 majors and never a Ryder Cup captain…..PGA of America should be ashamed. I don’t know why this man doesn’t get more respect /acknowlegement
