The same high school junior who made headlines after he qualified for the US Open. Just leapfrog Tiger Woods to become the third youngest US amateur champion of all time. Nobody’s walking in to their first day of senior year hotter than Mason Howell. Winning the US amateurs more than a trophy. It earns you an invite to the US Open, the British Open, and the Masters. Now remember, just a few months back, Mason ripped apart the US Open qualifiers. He went nuclear and shot a 6363 to earn a spot over pros like Max Homo and Ricky Fowler. Now, despite getting some experience with the pros, Mason was a serious long shot in Newam. He was one of the lowest ranked players of all 312 in the field. The tournament works like this. The first two days of stroke play with the top 64 advanced to match play. Mason squeaked by by finishing 63rd, but won his first three matches to meet John Dilly the second in the quarterfinals. The match was extremely tight, but Mason advanced winning one up. He was even more clutch in his semi-finals match versus Eric Lee. He canned this 15t birdie putt to win the match in 16 green. On Sunday, he met Jackson Harrington in the finals and put together one of the most dominant performances in the history of amateur golf.
