Here is a simple effective way to learn how to compress your irons getting your lower body to work correctly in the swing. This is one of my favorite drills and so helpful to all levels of players.
Step 1 – Turn hips
Step 2 – Put pressure into lead foot(Biggest Deal)
Step 3 – Rotate

If you can learn to put pressure into the lead foot you will pure your irons

Hi, I’m Nick Compass, director of instruction at Saint Ana Country Club. One of the most important parts for us to hit a good golf shot, especially an iron with the ball on the ground, is to have a good pivot. And there’s a real easy way for us to work on that. And kind of the two errors that I typically see is typically when somebody gets going through in their swing, they’ll tend to fall back and hang back and try to lift that golf ball up. Okay. So, here’s how we’re going to work on this. I’m going to take my golf club. I’m going to get set up here. And I’m going to talk about what these sticks are on the ground here, but I’m just going to put this golf club on my hips here. Okay, so we’re going to do three parts here. Okay, the first part is my back swing, the way my lower body works here. And again, so we’re working on our pivot and kind of how our lower body works in the golf swing to get better at this. So when I start back, hey, my hips are going to turn a little bit, maybe about 45 degrees, maybe a little less than that, but about 45 degrees. This is probably the biggest number two. This step number two is where people struggle at. And what’s the biggest? My next step is I’ve got to put some pressure into my lead foot. Now, a lot of times when people do this, they’ll do kind of both together. So, you can see how I’ve got this red stick on the ground that about that 45 degree angle and and this club on my hips is matching that. So, that move starting down, I want to feel like I’m going more towards my left foot and my toes and my left knee and I’m going to do a face on view here too. My left knee is kind of getting over those toes and getting a little bit forward. So, it’s kind of doing two parts. It’s moving a little bit forward towards the target, but it’s also moving a little bit lateral right here. Okay? And you can kind of see how my feet are kind of rolling a little bit so I can get this pressure on this left side. So to me, if I had two scales, if I weighed 100 lbs and I got 50 lbs on each, I’m I’m even right here. When I get that pressure going forward, I’ve probably got about 75% there. Now, from there, after I’ve got that pressure there, that step number two, my next step, now that I’ve got this pivot point on this left leg where my left ankle and left knee are kind of on top of each other. Hey, now from here I can rotate. Okay. And then I’ve got this stick out here that I’m matching to. So again, it’s three steps. So I got the club on my hips. My hips turn. I pressure and move a little bit lateral. See how those match? And then I’m going to rotate from there. Okay. So we’re going to do that one more time. Looking at it on face on. So again, those three steps looking at it from this face on angle. I’m going to turn my hips. Okay. I’ve got to Now, you can really see this me getting this left knee outside of that foot. And again, if I had a line here, you can see how that’s kind of getting towards that outside. Again, if I go from the back swing here, we can see how that left knee is going to move a little lateral and forward for me to put that pressure in there. And you can see how both feet are kind of rolling over a little bit there. So, again, turn pressure. And then from there, I can rotate. Okay. Again, a lot of people struggle. They’ll do a good back swing, but then on the down swing, they won’t put that pressure into that front foot or move this lateral move. And they’ll go to rotate and turn. And you can see how my left knee now is working back and that’s either going to get me to hit behind it or tend to scoop up on the golf ball. Okay. So again, this pivot that I want to feel I’m turn pressure and then finish from here. Okay, that’s going to help you doing that simple drill is going to help you get a lot better striking of the golf ball. The other way again is you’re typically going to either hit a lot of ground first or you’re going to tend to catch it a little bit thin and maybe even top the golf ball some. So work on that pivot if you want to hit the ball
