you’re not completing your back swing. You think you’re completing your back swing, but the reality is you’re not. You’re only using about 60% of your body’s total power potential in the swing. And it’s the reason why you struggle to hit it off of the heel, off of the toe. Your buddies are out driving you, and you’re spending a lot of time perhaps in the woods with squirrels. So, what we’re going to do today is unlock that other 40% that’s holding you back. And by the way, this is holding back most golfers out there. Whether you’re a beginner player or advanced player, doesn’t matter. When we look at power in the golf swing, I want you to think about the participation of your entire body. So, how much are we using with the shoulders? How much are we using with the hips, the knees, and so forth? So, I’m going to ask you a basic question. I want you to think about this. Which back swing is better in this case? Back swing one, back swing two. Most people are going to say back swing two because it’s longer. The real answer is when we look at the body in the swing, both back swings are actually the same. Pay attention to my shoulder here. Back swing one, back swing two. The shoulder travels the same amount. My body is only going the same distance for both of those swings. Now look at back swing three. When I get my full body participating in the swing, you can see shoulders, hips, and knees, everything getting engaged in that entire motion. That, my friends, is where 100% of your power potential is. And most of you are hanging out right around here using only 60% And it’s a shame because there’s so much more that you can access. There’s a gold mine just waiting for you and there’s no need to do anything else to access it. We have to think about how to create power in the golf swing with the shoulders pulling the hips around and the knees around using the body correctly. I want you to engage your entire body in the swing. So, how do we do it? I’m setting up over the ball. You can see my spine is tilted toward the ground. And for me to have a powerful swing, I need to keep my spine tilted down towards the ground. This is the part that holds most golfers back. Many golfers are going to try and swing keeping their spine angled, and they can only use about 60% of their swing this way. But the golf swing isn’t a fixed piece of motion. It’s using the entire body. As you swing back, keep tilting your spine toward the target. I want you to almost feel like your front shoulder is touching the ground. So, by the time you reach the top of your back swing, you’ll be in a full left tilt. Now, this looks crazy, but it’s exactly what pros are doing to rip the ball a mile. When I tilt, it’s going to allow my body to keep turning in the golf swing. The tilt is getting the other big components of the hips and the knees to work with you. So, no tilt is limited to only a couple of pieces. Tilt allows me to use all of the pieces. A great way to feel this is to start from a level position. Have both arms extended out in front of you. And I just want you to be like you’re pushing up against the wall. Now move your shoulders around your body till they face the camera. My hips are turning. My shoulders are turning. So this isn’t just arms. The shoulders don’t move when it’s just arms. No, it’s shoulders and hips working together. Now create that back swing. Next thing I want you to do, drop your shoulder down towards the ground. So we’re tilting. doing nothing else but tilting at this point. That’s where you should be at the top of your back swing. That is your 100% power potential swing. You’re swinging your shoulders as you point this shoulder down. So, the feeling is really getting down here. Yes, I’m moving my head to exaggerate this point. That’s a feeling that you might have. You might have this feeling. What’s really happening though is this big turn and the tilt. So, we’re trying to turn as much as we can in a relationship to the ball. Most of you stop about 60% of the way. We’ll stop right about here. This is the part where their body says, “Okay, I’ve only turned 60% of the way.” And that’s the part where the arms keep going. That’s where you see your swing breakdown. That’s where the power loss is. And that’s why you end up hitting off of the heel and the toe because it causes all sorts of down swing problems. But think about the difference here. If I keep going beyond 60%, keep tilting, tilting, tilting, tilting, tilting, tilting, tilting. Boom. Huge back swing in a relationship with the ground. And now I’ve got a tremendous amount of turn with shoulder, hip, and knee. All of that working together and joined in this ball slaughtering madness. Wait, that’s not the right word. Joining in this explosive, powerful movement. Now, take the club, place it in your hands, and I want you to just think about one thing, going upside down, because the correct feeling swing does not feel like you’re up here. It’s going to feel like you’re over here. And now I want you to think about continuously tilting, continually moving that front shoulder pointing down. Keep moving the shoulders. Keep pointing that shoulder down till the point where you stop. So this is the point where you reached your total back swing limit. And now everything’s joined in. The belt buckle should be pointed a little bit more away from the target. Your knees have changed position. So the knees are no longer these fixed objects. Nope. Because you’ve tilted more, it forces the knees to change position. And the best part, your shoulders now have turned fully all the way to the top. So instead of having this weak 60% back swing, you’ve now got a full 100% back swing that is easy to control. And this is why you’ll see a lot of golfers who have shorter looking swings, but nice big full shoulder turns. Shorter control, full shoulder turn power. While you’re working through this, comment below. Let me know what you’re feeling in the swing. And also, let me know if it increased the amount of your back swing length. This can help other people understand that this feel, though different, is opening up a whole new world of speed. and a basic little practice schedule for you. I want you to go out next three to five sessions. Five sessions will be ideal. When you go out there, focus exclusively on pointing this shoulder down at the ground while turning your shoulders. You’ll find that if this shoulder keeps moving down, it’s easy to turn your shoulders the full amount. If this shoulder stops moving down, that’s where the breakdown happens. So, stop down, break down, keep moving down, full back swing. The real full back swing. When you get to the driver, this is where it feels weird for a lot of golfers. Most golfers stop tilting with the driver because it’s such a long club. It just feels like it’s all the way out here. So, it’s hard to get that sensation of tilt. You may be tempted to stop tilting. Don’t. The moment you stop tilting, heel toe. Not good strikes, losing power. I have firsthand experience with this. I got stuck hitting 267 when I felt like I was really bombing it. It’s like, what the heck? It was the tilt. Once I started tilting and unlocking this, it was up to over 300 yards. Awesome. You’re trying to feel this same thing all the way to the top. It’s going to feel like it’s wrong because you spent years turning too level. It’s going to feel different. I actually feel like I am upside down. It feels like I’m flipped over. That’s a great mental image for you. When I was doing it wrong, I always felt like I was right side up. So now upside down, it’s like my entire body is over here because it is. And that’s what you need to do to have a big shoulder turn. [Music]

Looking more and more like prime Tom Selleck everyday brotha!
I'll give it a shot🤣 going to start going to a stretching company
Great extended arms in front of you drill to accentuate the full use of the body! Well done Tom!
I'm afraid to actually twist. So everything is arms. L5-S1 injury. That move is very painful to the left lower back.
Tom genuinely not being rude but honestly asking how is this different than a reverse pivot?
I need that setup for my garage 🙂
Does this work with a driver or only irons?
Thank you for the great information
Great drill. Using the elbow tuck and my driver is traveling 230 carry 250-260 roll out. Not bad for a 68 year old and they are straight or a baby draw! Heading. To airport tomorrow. Will use the airport drills 😂
Obviously I am doing this wrong, as I struggle to hit 130 yards with a 7 iron. The only way I can get good distance to is to use my wrists. You never speak of using the wrists. Isn’t that where the speed comes from? The more you turn, the less your chance of coming back to the same spot…
Keep the mustache!! You are pulling it off flawlessly !
Is this right? It kinda goes against my mental pictures of keeping my head height through the swing and destroys the “reverse C” / hitting up on your driver mentality. Can’t wait to try it
Excellent video Tom. A lot of golfer think, they lost flexibility, but the truth was they never completed their backswing. 🤷♂️
I wish I knew this 30 years ago.
What abt maintaining a level head and not hitting fat or thin. Also how do you stop coming down steep?
I think turn that right shoulder back and make sure its turning through the ball on the follow through
Tom, what's with the porn mustache?
Not sure I can turn that much.
The "swing thought" that helps with this is "lead shoulder down to lead knee." When I practice this motion in front of a full-length mirror, I look for the target side of my body at the top of the backswing to form a straight line with the lead shoulder down.
Thank you. Can you do a video on impact.
Life is too short to play bad golf, people! -SG
Been following you for a couple of years, and must admit that one of my best ever drives was achieved your way! HOWEVER i started hitting the club into the ground? Now my mind is working between57 different swing thoughts, mental anguish, your thoughts please.
Another great explanation of tilt. I've had my hip rotation measured and it pretty good but I've struggled with sequence. Lately, I like to feel as if my shoulder, hip, and knee and are moving down. Then my hip pushes up and towards target to start the lag and drop the club head. Everything else follows that upwards motion through my left side. Just need more time and reps
