This week, I’m finally doing a What’s in My Bag episode. I go through my trusty old DGA team bag, introduce my brand new disc golf backpack, and walk you through the discs I’m currently bagging: mids, drivers, and putters.

I’m looking for YOUR suggestions — what am I missing? What should I try? Whether you’re a disc golf pro or just love talking plastic, drop your recommendations in the comments.

Manufacturers & distributors: if you’d like me to feature your discs in future videos and on the course, get in touch.

[Music] Aloha friends and welcome back to my quest for a thousand. Today I’m going to talk to you about what’s in my bag. [Music] So when I started playing again after all those years, I went out to the garage, dug out my old discs, many of which just crumbled into plastic, and got my old bag. This is the old trusty workhorse right here, my DJ Team bag. Um, but you know something that I discovered? It squeaks. It squeaks. I’m sure there’s a metaphor in there and uh I just didn’t want to listen to that every time that I took a step. So, I decided that I was going to buy myself a backpack, which I did. Uh, this guy has got disc pockets in the bottom, on the top, an insulated pack on the side for a beverage, extra storage on the side. So, I’ll show you what I got attached to it right now. First is a little click wheel so I can track his scores. A little towel that was donated by Mr. Ultimate Thrower Guy. Shouts to you, pal. Inside I carry around. Uh first off, I keep some exercise bands, some resistance bands, because I like to use these when I’m warming up, which is something that’s pretty important for masters players to do. I want to loosen up my shoulders, my core, my biceps, my triceps, also my legs, so I don’t pull anything out of place. Have some sunscreen and a uh chalk bag in there. But let’s get into what you’re here for, and that’s the discs. And by the way, if if you’re a manufacturer or a distributor out there and you would love to hook me up so that I will try your things and talk about them, well, I’m all ears. So, let me show you what I got. And by the way, this is not a tripble. Those of you that actually understand what that means, you should be subscribed. As I get into my bag, let me acknowledge that it’s pretty DGA biased. There’s a reason for that. I worked for a long time selling courses on the East Coast Red Hedrickk and then I was sponsored as a player by DGA. So, yeah, most of what I have in here DGA. And when I started to buy a few new discs when I came back into the sport, well, that was naturally the first place that I looked. So, here’s what I got. First, the appropriately named mid-range by DGA. I like this disc a lot for turbo putting. So, that’s what it’s in there for. I’ve got a team DGA Shockwave, which is an overstable mid-range disc, kind of slower flying. I like to use this for sidearm approaches and where I’m trying to fish it through places. The disc that I used most frequently, the squall. So, when I started playing for DGA, the disc that I had to figure out how to replace was a rock. A rock was always my favorite driver cuz you could just do anything with it. It’s very predictable. I found the squall to be a pretty good, but not exact replacement. It’s similar in that I can throw it on a very straight line. I can hold that line. Um, it’s a lot glidier, though, so it’ll go a lot further. This kind of pushes the boundary of what a mid-range disc is and what a fairway driver is. At this point, I’ve thrown this enough that I feel comfortable doing turnover shots, doing straight shots, or even hiser shots. And I’ll probably use this up to about 300 to 320 ft on almost anything that’s further than a putter. I ordered a brand new one so that I’d have one that wasn’t made in 2006. And I put the rock back in my bag, too, because I love these things. Now, this is an older one, probably from around 2006. I will still use it for control, shorter drives, and I really like to turbo putt with it. All right, now let’s talk about the drivers. My preferred driver when I was throwing for DJ was the Rogue. I’ve still got a couple in my bag, a Crystal Rogue and what I guess they would probably consider a Proline Rogue. These were made before there were flight numbers, but I can tell you that it throws an awful lot like a Wraith. similar speed, uh, similar really straight lines, maybe slightly less glide. That’s the only thing. Um, I can throw these really, really straight. And I don’t need to have a large opening, a big gap to hit. It’s really good for that use. Or you can bomb them in the field when you have more room. It’s not really a big slex disc unless you use a lot of hiser. But I find with a gentle hiser flip, it’ll stay very straight and the fade at the end is soft and very predictable. You get pretty good distance with these. Since I stopped playing, the DJ came out with a faster version of a disc in this same kind of line, the Hurricane. So, I picked up a couple of these when I got back into it recently. I got a Proline and a Sparkle plastic version. I find this Proline to be actually pretty similar to the Rogue. Um, a little faster, maybe a little bit glidier. This sparkle one is a little bit more overstable. So, I’ve been having a lot of luck with these on a little forced slight annie fade shot or on my forehand. I really love this guy on my forehand. Get pretty good distance. Speaking of distance, my goodness, I decided to pick up an end of a Shrike after throwing one from Mr. Ultimate Thrower Guy. And this thing is my absolute bomber favorite distance driver. I’ve been able to get my PRs on backhand and on forehand with the end of a strike. It does require a little bit of room to flex in the field, but if you have that, man, this thing just glides. It goes forever on and on and on. I absolutely love it. It’s pushing 400 on the forehand for me. I’ve got an old Destroyer that I had for many years. This one’s a little bit flippy, so for his flips, it’s really great. And recently, I picked up a Halo Destroyer. I got this one in slightly lighter weight because uh chat GBT told me with my noodle arm speed that this would be my furthest flying disc. Not sure if that’s true, but I do find it to be extremely useful for big flex shots, especially with a tailwind. And because we are all creatures that want to have the fastest flying disc possible because the bigger the number the better, right? I picked up a couple of 14-speed torins from DGA. Now, uh, I don’t have a 14-speed arm, so I’m not getting the full flight out of these things. The Proline is a little bit less stable, I find, than the Sparkle, and I can throw this one pretty well, and it’s got good glide. Even with an imperfect flight, I can get its distance out there pretty similar to what I can do with my other discs. What it’s useful for, for me right now, is headwind shots, and for when I definitely want to have a little bit of fade to the left at the end. This guy is a little bit more overstable for me, and it works more like a meat hook. So, if I got hard left shots or on the forehand, if I want to have a big uh Annie turnover flex shot, it works really well for me for that. In terms of fairway drivers, the first one is an overstable tsunami from DGA. This is a little bit of a meat hook at lower speeds. I like to use it for sidearm shots and for um hiser backhand shots when I need to make sure it’s going to finish pretty hard back to the left. I picked up two newer fairway drivers, a Bonsai and a Pipeline from DG. They’re very similar disc except the pipeline is maybe a little bit less stable. I really like them both, especially the Bonsai. I’ve been driving with this an awful lot backhand and forehand. I find it really predictable. I can throw it kind of hard on a straight line and it’ll stay on that line, give me a little bit of predictable fade at the end. And now, finally, the putters. The one that I use most of the time is the Gateway Wizard, primarily because I printed up a stack of these with my logo on them, and it gives me enough of the same putters that I can practice. I also like to use a DGA Reef. This one has been in my bag since about 2005. It’s flippier, and I use it primarily as a a short throwing putter, so when I have approach shots up to about 175 ft or so. All right, now that you’ve seen what I actually have inside my bag, I’ve got a question for you. What should I actually be using? I mean, I’ve been away from the game so long that there are dozens of manufacturers and literally thousands of molds that I’ve never tried, many of which I’ve never even heard of. And I’m sure that there are a lot of things that I could really benefit from. What are your favorite drivers? Uh, mid-ranges, putters, what is comparable to the things that I’m using, if you’ve ever heard of any of them. What would help me to take my game to the next level? Please let me know below. And if you can tell me why, because I I like to know why. I’ll be releasing a series of videos soon with updates on my backhand, my forehand, and my putting stroke with the tips that coach gave me to try not to granny putt anymore. So, keep an eye out for that. Make sure to like, subscribe if you want to get notifications so you don’t miss any of that stuff. Thank you for your support, and remember, whatever you do, don’t ever give up on your dreams. And long live the lid. [Music] Steve, what are you doing? That’s my team disc. I’m a bad mongoose. Now he’s stranded on an island and he trains with coconuts. He’s stranded on island 42 with coconuts for minis. Seagulls heckling his throws. Suspended. Suspended for 12 bucks. He said no. Now he’s practicing flex lines where the mango breezes blow.
