Start simple with Coach Joe Hallett’s fairway wood drill. No wrist, then add shoulder turn, then hinge. This 3-step build helps you go from ground zero to pure strikes.

Like so much of this game, there are clubs that seem to pose problems for a lot of players. The fairway woods, until you get the knack of it, you really might struggle with these generally because there’s a lot of turning and hinging and everything because you got this wood in your hand and you want to hit it a long way. Here’s a good primer to start back at ground zero and you can build into a better fairway swing. Number one, we need to learn how to sweep this club. So, all I want is a no wrist swing back and forth. This ball’s only going to go about 20 yards. That’s the feeling of sweeping the club. Once we hit a few good with that, I want you to bring a little shoulder turn in with it. After you sweep it back, I sweep it back. A little shoulder turn. There’s another sweep. Guess what? We’re going to add in on the final one. A little bit of wrist hinge. I’m going to bring the club back with my sweep. A little shoulder turn, a little wrist hinge. Now I’ve taken a very simple sweeping motion and turned it into one sweet fairway wood shot. Good luck with this.
