Story so far
Robert MacIntyre took a firm grip on the BMW Championship on Thursday when he completed his first round with six successive birdies, and the Scotsman is firm favourite to complete the job and win the penultimate tournament of the FedEx Cup playoffs on Sunday.
The 2024 Scottish Open and Canadian Open champion, who was runner-up to JJ Spaun in June’s US Open, enjoys a four-shot lead going into the final round at Caves Valley Golf Club, which would push him up to third from 20th in the FedEx Cup standings ahead of next week’s Tour Championship at East Lake.
MacIntyre would be a lot shorter than 4-7 had the only player in touching distance not been world number one Scottie Scheffler, who is looking to build on the third spot he claimed at last week’s FedEx St Jude Championship at TPC Southwind.
None of the players who completed the third round in the top ten were able to post a round of better than 67, although European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald will be delighted to see Ludvig Aberg in third and building on the ninth he posted last week.
Two players looking to boost their chances of gaining wildcard spots for Bethpage Black, America’s Sam Burns and Cornishman Harry Hall, are eight under par, but it could be an evening where the battle at the top of the leaderboard is less enthralling than the quest for players to ensure they have a top-30 spot in the standings and a place at next week’s finale.

BMW Championship final-round predictions
Harry Hall has enjoyed a big week at just the right time, and not just because he can boost his position of 45th in the FedEx Cup standings to 25th if he can hold his current spot of tied for fifth at Caves Valley.
An opportunity has now arisen for the Englishman, who resides in Las Vegas and won the ISCO Championship in June 2024.
This would be his best result since then and among top company too, but an even greater prize could be capture than just a seat at the top table in next week’s Tour Championship, where a first prize of $10m will be up for grabs and everyone will be starting on level terms for the first time in six years.
A good performance this week and a strong showing at East Lake would undoubtedly tap Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald on the shoulder and Hall has been playing consistently well of late – the only time he has not finished in the top 25 in his last ten tournaments was when he was 28th at The Open at Royal Portrush.
Hall has admitted he has not yet been asked for his measurements for Bethpage Black kit, but it would be hard to play down his claims if he made a big impression in the next two weeks.
The quest to do that starts now and he will be well aware of what is at stake. His putting has been strong this week and a top-five finish at Caves Valley would not only be considered a success but it is a position his efforts this week have demonstrated he is capable of attaining.
