Denny McCarthy shares how he endured extreme heat and humidity during Round 2 of the BMW Championship, managing sweaty conditions, fast greens, and a physical grind. He details the mental and physical challenges, a tough front nine, and clutch birdies to close the round. A gritty performance with the hometown crowd behind him.
Hey Denny, uh 69 including two birdies on your last three. Excellent way to finish the round if we can get some comments. It’s really hot outside. Um really hot outside. The front nine was brutal. Um I was just trying to survive. Felt like trying to get dry, hit my shot, and move on. Um it’s nice little reset at the turn. I changed my clothes, new shirt, new hat. I I needed a new pair of pants. I didn’t bring it. Um but yeah, settled in nicely to on the back nine. Some hard shots out there, some really long par4s. Um proud of the way I kind of hung tough in there and like you mentioned birdie two of the last three to finish. It was a nice way to finish the round. D um just more specifically, I mean I saw you wiping off between shots and and trying to look like trying to keep the moisture out of your hands. I mean, what did it affect any any of the way you played today? Did you have to be extra careful? Um yeah, I mean it’s just it’s something I have to deal with. I I sweat maybe a little more than others and u you know I’m used to it by now. Doesn’t make it any easier though. Um it’s just hard it’s hard for me when it’s to play in the severe heat humidity. Um yeah, like you mentioned, I I I have a hard time getting dry. I go through a rotation of gloves. My my towels get so wet where they’re they’re not dry anymore, so my towels are even wet. So, um, yeah, it’s it’s a battle for sure. Um, but the more I play in rounds like these, the more I learn and figure out kind of how to what what b works best for me in those situations. You pleased with where you are through? Yeah, I think I’ve played some nice golf. Um, I haven’t I didn’t make I made two nice putts today. I had some really good looks that I didn’t make. A lot of putts that I you know, the putting greens have no slope here and they don’t seem that fast. And then there’s a lot of slope out on the course and they’re really fast. Um so it was quite a dramatic difference almost pointless to putt on the putting green to start your round. I don’t know what what what’s going on there, but um the greens on the course were really fast compared to the greens on the putting green. So um I kind of had to adjust on the fly. Felt like I needed to start playing a lot more break just because of how fast they were rolling. So I had a hard time on the greens today seeing them. Um but still made some nice putts coming in to finish. Um so makes me feel a little better about my round. Folks were commenting on the size of your gallery. Obviously a bit of a hometown match. What’s what’s that like kind of feeling your family and friends trailing you? Yeah, it feels great. I mean I I know that I wouldn’t really want to walk this golf course in this heat and watch watch someone play golf. So um for the amount of people that came out and watched me today that you know that’s that’s really good support. But I really appreciate it cuz it’s not that easy to walk this place in that heat. So, um yeah, I mean it was even when I was kind of making some little par putts, you know, I got nice nice boost from the crowd and um you know, just enough to keep me going today. All set. Thanks, D. Yeah, thank you. Appreciate it, guys.
