I went to a sim for the first time and was SHOCKED to see that my club head falls back like this when I strike the ball. It was more pronounced when off the toe but still happened at solid contact. I assume this is playing into my slice but it happened when I made solid contact too.

Hooks for days! Gear effect off that toe is a mfer

  2. LouisTheWhatever

I can’t see any forward shaft lean or compression at all. This looks to be a scooped shot off the toe

  3. chriz-kring

Extreme toe strike but also a good visual of what gear effect looks like. Toe shots produce draw spin/ heel shots produce cut spin

  4. socially_stoic

You can’t base your swing on this shot, it was a horrible toe strike and anything that far out is going to cause the club to open up.

  5. Adventurous-Owl1953

Physics. You contact way on the toe and the toe can’t maintain squareness and opens. Similarly you would see for an extreme heel hit that the club closes right after impact too.

  6. Master-Twist-9328

You’re hitting 4 inches behind the ball, and directly off that toe.

The club twists like that because of something called “gear effect”.

Toe as people said, but grip pressure might contribute to it

Try hitting the ball anywhere but the toe.

Because of your inability to hit the club in the center of the face. You are on the toe every shot and it’s going to deflect. You have on of 2 potential problems. You are either setting up with your arms too far away from your body or you are set up properly and have the ball set up on the toe. If you have your arms hanging properly and this happens you need to move closer to the ball. From your perspective it will look too close to the heel, but it will be on center. If you don’t believe it have someone set you up dead center and then play the ball even though you “see” it close to the heel. Since you don’t show your swing, we can’t see if your arms are too far from the body. Here’s a video showing how to set up the right distance from the ball. So that would be because of the torque of the shaft. All shafts twist some more than other. Lower torque has more resistance to twisting and vise versa. When you hit it on the toe it will twist more kind of like having a longer wrench etc to turn a bolt etc. Its one of the reasons you see people with clubheads sheered at the hosel because they likely hit it dead on the hosel and since it cant twist it snaps.

The slice is a combo of face angle at impact and club path so not exactly torque but plays into it.

If your normal hit is that then you may be a little too far from the ball or potentially the clubs are too short.

What shafts do you have in your clubs?

  11. Decent-Party-9274

What is the system you’re using which films the ball from overhead? That’s cool.

  12. TonalContrast

What a great visual of a serious toe strike. I can usually feel a toe hit and a lot of time it was way too much grip pressure.

  13. Froggy_400

Have you tried squeezing harder on your grip? Also maybe take a 1/2 inch step closer to align the clubs to the middle of your club face.

  14. Gone2sl33p

You’re hitting it way fat like 4in behind the ball , if this was grass you be chucking/topping these shots. Also catching way on the toe.

  15. Turbulent_Echidna423

yep, the toe is hitting and opening up the club.

  16. PoolShark1819

There are lot of factors that can make this happen. If you haven’t changed your grips in a while, look at that too.

Long ago I played an old set with some slick AF grips. A toe banger would go way right bc the club would turn in my hang super easily.

Tried the best I could to get a pic slightly before impact. This might be slightly after impact but the premise should be the same.

Red line is where your club hits the ground. And based on the shape I would say that the toe starts to hit first. Which might start causing the club to twist and open the face

Blue line is where the club should hit the ground.

Green dot is roughly where the club face should strike the ball. You are obviously hitting towards the toe. Which as others have said causes gear effect and for the club face to open.

Purple line is your shaft angle.

Yellow line is more in the direction your shaft should be leaning. “Shaft lean”.

I want to say your standing to close to the ball. Or your clubs lie angle is wrong. Standing further away or getting a more upright lie angle will allow the sole of the club to impact the ground evenly instead of toe first.

Without seeing your swing it’s hard to say what exactly is going on but my guess is your weight is mostly on your back foot and stays there which is moving your swings low point well behind the ball. Which is why you are hitting the ground so far behind the ball and have negative shaft lean.

Lastly you just need to hit the center of the club face. Again

  18. Alternative_Map1609

Check your swing path to club face, your path is off

  19. ResidentCat4432

Besides the toe hit, make sure your grip is strong on impact. If 10 is squeezing the crap out of the grip and 0 is it falling right through, you should be at a 7-8.

  20. agentchris0011

You’re hitting well behind the ball, probably from and out to in path, which starts the face opening. Then impacting the ball off the toe further exaggerates the opening. You’ve got some work to do!

  21. marvinfuture

A mix of toe strikes and lack of proper shaft lean to promote compression. Essentially you’re striking the ball and it’s equal reaction force is causing a recoil like effect

My favorite part of the post is how OP answers his own question in the description.

  23. Emergency-Cricket783

Golf is not very fun for you right now. I’m sorry. you need some hand eye coordination training and a lesson on hitting compressed shots. Do hand eye coordination training first otherwise you’re just spending money on a nice looking swing. I like to take my 54 or 58 wedge and see how many times I can bounce a golf ball when I feel like my swing thoughts start crowding my see ball hit ball instincts. 20 is a good number if you want to really get good shoot for 30.

Gear effect from a toe strike

  25. G0nzo165

Your hands are not leading, you may be flipping the club, or not getting/keeping any wrist hinge on the way down. 🤷🏻‍♂️

  26. SlyFrog

If that is your normal swing, you need to fix it or get a lie adjustment to your club to be more upright. You are literally dragging the tip of the toe of the club into the ground point first, and that is kicking it open even more.

  27. Western_Signal5810

is this golf-in??? please look at attack angle. we had golf-in sims at my work with this camera angle and it’s very misleading. yes, that strike wasn’t perfect, but the angle isn’t directly over the ball like it appears, it’s more in front of the ball with always makes it look like there’s no shaft lean.

  28. Varyan41

Work on making good face contact first- put foot spray on the face and hit the center. Once that is more consistent then work on face angle/club path.

  29. ezcnahje

Are you taller? Try grabbing some longer clubs.

  30. LengthinessPure2745

Toeing it. Gotta get that center club face strike.
